Beating Hypertension Through Diet Dietary recommendations to control cholesterol levels are common, as some of the cholesterol that is found in arteries comes from food.
Using diet to control blood pressure isn’t always straightforward, yet food can have a direct impact on blood pressure. Salt is a common culprit in this conversation, but there’s more to maintaining a healthy blood pressure level than just minimizing salt intake. Below are food groups to consider that can have a positive impact:
Vegetables Regularly consuming between four and five servings of vegetables has been linked to reducing the risk of high blood pressure, with different-coloured vegetables offering different nutritional benefits.
Fruit Most conversations about vegetables also involve fruit as this food group is a rich source of nutrients such as magnesium, fibre and potassium, which are all essential in maintaining optimal blood pressure levels.

Wholegrains Despite some diets calling for reduced intake of whole grains such as cereals, regularly consuming them has been linked to a lower risk of high blood pressure and even death from cardiovascular disease. Portion sizes are something to watch out for when consuming wholegrain foods, whether its wholegrain bread, pasta, oats or rice.
