Pit Break NEWS IN THE WORLD OF DIVISION I Phantom Regiment tricks as they’ve been preparing to once again spellbind audiences with another gorgeous ballad, Oblivion. The “Buicks” have a mysterious line in the background that will give anyone chills. For fans that thought last year’s Canon in D and Lord’s Prayer was gorgeous, wait until you hear this! With the return of the 2003 visual staff as well as some new faces, expect some major improvement in technique this year. The corps is already hitting on subjects such as not leaning into the step-off
and body control with the changes of direction. In April, the corps learned their entire opener and ballad drill, with staging that will make the production a great moment in drum corps. The camps were entirely successful. The corps is definitely ahead of the game, and waiting in anticipation for move-ins.

In March, the corps laid down the sound track for a TV commercial, which was filmed in Orlando for the Ontario Lotto Corporation. The April camp took place at North Fort Myers High School, and more than 120 additional students attended the Kavaliers band clinic. The corps hosted another band clinic in May at Webber International University in Babson Park. The Kavaliers are striving to bring more awareness to the communities of our Florida operations and hope to develop a strong relationship with the schools and other groups in the area.

prepared as after a full week of spring training. This can only be considered a blessing, as the need to be prepared has made the corps just that. Another difference in The Cadets’ winter program is the approach to marching. Instead of concentrating solely on basic technique, the focus was placed mainly on how to prepare the body for the stress of marching The Cadets drill, by learning numerous exercises to strengthen specific muscles, and discussing what the visual program is conceptually about. The corps is ready to move-in and take hard work to a new level. Morale is high as the corps continues building on the momentum from the winter, with the potential to arrive at the first show more prepared than ever. — William Plenk, Drum Major

Never Let Go Go Go by Monica Simon
We are in the summer months where junior drum and bugle corps across the country are hitting the road for the 2004 Drum Corps International SUMMER MUSIC GAMES Tour. Drum corps alumni and fans are anxiously awaiting to witness history in the making as the 2004 summer season undoubtedly promises to be yet another unforgettable year, both competitively, emotionally, and creatively. RECENT AGE-OUTS ARE FEELING a slight vacancy in their lives as they no longer must stock up on toiletries, rehearsal clothes and sunscreen or condition their bodies to endure the countless hours learning, memorizing, and perfecting their show material, which will soon become the soundtrack to their summer memories. A funny thing happens to those who have loved and left the drum corps activity. We sometimes feel that we need to let go. Some swear on their age-out night that they will never again pick up a horn to play, a flag to spin, or a drum to hack. Some quit cold-turkey, submerging themselves in their “regular” lives, and remove themselves from the drum corps community completely, even if it’s just for one season, for fear it may be too hard to sit through, or think it’s the best way to get the “addiction” out of their blood. But that’s just what it is. Drum corps gets in our blood. From the moment we become entranced by the first broadcast we catch on PBS, or stare in awe for the first time we see a drum corps show live, or even that unforgettable first step we took through the door of an audition camp, drum corps gets into our blood – and it stays there. Over the course of the summer tour, marching members forget their regular life at home. The memories of that last spring semester, part-time job, and just being on their own schedule seem so distant. But yet, only a few short months after they sleep on a gym floor for the last time that summer, the endless summer of drum corps tour just seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye, and all the memories flow through their minds as a blur. That is, until those who are able to return to the activity for another season reunite with their drum corps friends at the begin-
ning of the camp season, staying up all night that first weekend laughing at all the specific details we can resurrect from our summer together. They pick up their drum, rifle, or horn once again, and at first it feels so foreign, until they realize that yes, they’re back in the drum corps season. From then they begin to fall back into their old habits. Showering in the school locker room with 40 other people doesn’t phase them, they find that perfect position in their sleeping bags where they can get the best night of sleep, and that drum, rifle, or horn once again simply feels like an extension of their bodies. So why is it in this activity that we live & breathe, year after year, we feel that we should let go? That now that we have aged-out or no longer march, we should move on with our lives? We shouldn’t. If we graduate college or leave a job, we don’t try to forget all we learned from our experiences there. We don’t stop cheering on our alma mater, or learning from our experiences. Drum corps is more than the specific show we marched in a specific year and the placement and score to the tenths, or the specific people we still know in our respective corps. It’s about the experiences and memories we gained from our time spent in the ranks of a junior drum and bugle corps. So allow yourself to do a double take when a coach bus passes you on the highway, in wonderment that it may be one you spent some of the best summer nights in your life on, sharing the deepest conversations with your seat partner, or finding the most extreme ways to entertain each other on that 12 hour bus ride across the country. Allow yourself to pause when you see a football field where you once may have cleaned two sets of drill over and over on one of the hottest days of the summer. And allow yourself to reminisce when you hear one of those songs of summer that makes your stomach churn with nostalgia. But most of all, allow yourself to grieve over that moment in your life, no matter how long or how long ago, when you were a member of a drum & bugle corps. When something reminds you of the most random memory, let out a chuckle or a tear, knowing that you not only made the best of your youthful summers, but that you have carried that experience with you, and are forever changed because of it. DCI Goes to Hollywood Coming soon to a theater near you: “The 50.” The plot: Middleage, grizzled corps director (Nick Nolte as George Hopkins), eyeing retirement, leads the Cadets at one last DCI World Championship, along the while dispensing valuable life lessons to a young, upstart, unconvinced staff (Ron Livingston as Cadets staffer Derek Gipson) eager to shake up the staid DCI establishment (Jack Nicholson as Dan Acheson). Along the way a seasoned Cadets veteran (Frances McDormand as April Gilligan) considers offers to jump ship and join a rival corps (Harvey Keitel as David Gibbs) but winds up sticking it out as a trio of talented-but-easily-ignitable snare drummers (Jeff Carlson, Steve Carlson and David Hanson-the Hanson brothers from “Slap Shot”) gets into heaps of trouble on the way to World Championships in Honolulu, where a sudden typhoon puts the entire Hula Bowl into crisis mode (Joe Pesci as a raincoated, cigar-chomping Tony DiCarlo, Clint Eastwood as poncho-wearing Brandt Crocker). The script would write itself!
DCI Cinema But lest you think that this is a completely far-flung fantasy, remember that on Aug. 5, DCI comes to a silver screen near you. That evening, quarterfinals from

Denver will be broadcast to a Regal Cinema near you (check DCI.org for a list of nationwide cinemas). We can attest that this experience will completely blow you away. Imagine the power of a Cavaliers’ quad line, 30 ft tall, playing flamss at 180 bpm in 5.1 Dolby surround sound. Now THAT’s cool. “The theater experience gives us the opportunity to take 35,000 people who can’t come to Denver, take them into that stadium and give them the same experience that they might have being at World Championships. It’s another way to expand into different audiences,” said Tom Blair, longtime DCI broadcast producer (who will assume those same responsibilities for the Aug. 5 telecast). Steve Rondinaro, who has hosted the championship broadcast since 1979, is also thrilled about the DCI Cinema event. “I’m excited about broadcasting part of championship week live again. When I first started doing the show in ‘79 we did the entire finals live on PBS. Here we are going live again with the quarterfinals, capturing the excitement in the stadium for the big screen. It will be great fun to do. I hope we can give viewers a real “in-stadium” feel. “The DCI broadcast on PBS has evolved into a highly produced, fast-paced, cutting-edge highlights broadcast designed to pull in the new or younger viewer. It serves its intended purpose well. This live broadcast for Regal will allow people to get up close and ‘in the face’ with the full corps performances. Imagine taking a young band student to the theatre on that Thursday night. It will also allow the die-
hard fans a chance to get a full dose of DCI drum corps if they can’t get to Denver. It will be fun for me to help guide both those groups through the live broadcast.” “Year number 26 of hosting the show and we’re doing something new and different yet again. It’s invigorating for me and good for the activity. I hope this thing is a rip-roaring success that we can build on in the years to come,” Rondinaro said.
The Tour of Champions Also sure to fan the “DCI goes Hollywood” flames is the Tour of Champions, the week after World Championships (Aug 9 – 14, in locations all around California). For the first time in history, West Coast drum corps fans will see drum corps at its absolutely finesttuned best, right in the backyard of Hollywood’s famous Sunset Strip. The Blue Devils, The Cadets, Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cavaliers, Madison Scouts and Phantom Regiment will all hit the
Golden State for this memorable trek down picturesque Highway 1. On Tuesday, Aug. 10, DCI heads to Qualcomm Stadium, a wonderful Southern California venue (home of the NFL Chargers, and site of the 1998 Super Bowl!) in San Diego. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. DCI’s triumphant march into the Rose Bowl (pristine and beautiful home of the Rose Bowl football contest), in Pasadena, Calif., happens on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The corps will present a student workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. for ticketholders. That Thursday, Aug. 12, DCI heads indoors for a truly groundbreaking show at the Flint Center in Cupertino. This showbiz-style setting will offer up a wonderful glimpse of a truly outside-the-box drum corps experience. Finally, that Friday, Aug. 13, the Tour of Champions ends with a bang at San Jose University’s Spartan Stadium. This wonderful setting is sure to create drum corps memories that will live on forever in the minds of West Coast DCI fans. So the time is now - DCI hits the silver screen and the Sunset Strip this summer. Once upon a time “Drumline” director Charles Stone III told DCI.org that he wouldn’t rule out producing a “corpsstyle” marching music movie in the future. So why not now? The timing would be perfect. DCI presents... the 2004 Stacy Lynde marched with the Blue Devils from 1971 to 1977. She
then went on to serve as the Blue Devils’ principal dance choreographer in the 1980s. Her talents helped usher in a new style of guard movement with roots firmly planted in modern dance. In addition to her drum corps career, Lynde worked in massage therapy for patients seeking neuromuscular pain relief. She now spends her days as the full-time mother of her 6-year-old drumming son, Mason. James Elvord, a DCI Hall of Famer said, “Stacey was and still is a leader among our family. She gave us her style, creativity and sensitivity that are part of the basis for the drum and bugle activity today. She is a giant among our peers,

and should take her place alongside us.” Lynde feels of her nomination, “I think that I would have expected for many others to have gone before me. For me to be elected into the Hall of Fame by my peers is truly an honor.”

•••••••••••••••• “It was a delight and surprise,” said Barry Bell, who became the musical director of the Toronto Optimists in 1958, and went on to write the drill, design the uniform and logo for that corps. In addition to his drum corps career, Bell was an architectural representative for an international glass firm. He is currently an
Hall of Fame Inductees! instructor for the Toronto Optimists alumni corps, which began rehearsing late last year. Ray Roussel, who supported Bell’s nomination, said, “For me and many others Barry was a teacher, an inspiration and hero. He had the deft ability to inspire and draw from you more than you thought you had, to take you beyond what you thought your talents and abilities could achieve.” •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Donnie Van Doren began his drum corps teaching
career in 1979 with the Crossmen brass line. In 1980 he became brass caption head for the Garfield Cadets, remaining in that role until 1984 and overseeing that corps as it began its 1980s run at a string of World Championships. In 1985 Van Doren became brass caption head for the Star of Indiana, who won DCI World Championship in 1991. As that corps evolved into the Broadway musical “Blast!”, Van Doren assumed that show’s associate producer responsibilities. “Donnie simply knows how to organize materials and people, prioritize objectives, establish timelines, and motivate students and staff alike. The effect is a well-understood, simplified approach, which consistently produces superior results,” DCI Hall of Famer Thomas Hannum said. “The fact that Donnie hails from a drum corps background is a tribute to our activity and his ideals. It is time for DCI to embrace the long-standing excellence of Mr. Van Doren’s work and acknowledge his influence on drum corps.”

•••••••••••••• Tom Float began marching and teaching with the Anaheim Kingsmen in 1972, where he remained until 1974. In 1975 he became assistant to the Freelancers’ Don Silva, and from 1976 to 1990, Float’s drum lines (Etobicoke-Oakland Crusaders,

Spirit of Atlanta, and Blue Devils) placed lower than fifth only twice. Since 1990 Float has worked with the Velvet Knights, developed music programs at Disneyland and has continued his responsibilities as a clinician. “Excellence, creativity and passion is the signature of a Tom Float percussion ensemble. It is a true honor to add my voice to the nomination of Tom Float into the DCI Hall of Fame,” said DCI Hall of Famer Rodney Goodhart. •••••••••••••••• Scott Chandler began his drum corps career marching with the Madison Scouts’ guard in the late 1970s. After aging out, Chandler embarked on a teaching career that found him instructing the Bridgemen, Spirit of Atlanta and the Cadets. Since 1990 and a California relocation, Chandler currently serves as program coordinator/choreographer for the Blue Devils. “For over 20 years, Scott has grown within drum corps and has contributed to the enormous appeal of the programs we see on the field. Certainly, drum corps has changed and has had a great deal of success recently. The success of recent years can be attributed to many events. At the core of any success we find the participants, both in the staffs and performers. The joyous way in which Scott’s guards perform is a part of the overall success. The creativity of his work has brought added enthusiasm to our stages,” said George Oliviero, a DCI Hall of Famer, who nominated Chandler.

Big-screen Drum Corps Ensures a Blockbuster Summer. Viewing drum corps on the silver screen will no doubt be incredible. The sheer size and volume of a movie experience catapults drum corps into marketing territory previously occupied by horror movies of the 1950s. I can see the promotional posters now: “Scream as 30-foot tall bass drummers march right into your lap!” “Duck as rifles and flags come flying at your face!” “Collapse in agony as 20 trumpets pierce your eardrums!” Theater behavior will have to be modified a bit as throngs of drum corps enthusiasts take over multiplexes across the country in August. Gone will be the usual decorum of no talking during a film. Instead, viewers will stand, shout, cheer and scream as their favorite drum corps take the screen. And if someone wants to yell an “Oh no you don’t!” when scores are announced, even better. Drum corps in a theater offers the added benefits of no mosquitoes and no rain, meaning fans don’t have to prepare for the environment. Instead, they’ll be treated to the comforts of armrests, legroom and air conditioning. All of you drum corps alums who insist on keeping your corps jacket on at shows, even when the mercury tops 90 degrees, enjoy yourself. That extra AC? It’s just for you. Now that drum corps is available “at a theater near you,” could this summer’s big screen viewing be the start of a pop culture love affair with our beloved activity? Is this the foray into the mainstream that will lead to a drum corps reality television series and specially labeled bottles of Gatorade? Once the cinematic fury unleashed by the Blue Devils and Boston Crusaders hits America, drum corps feature films can’t be too far off in the future. Should we prepare ourselves for an entire series of summer-love romps on celluloid that use drum corps as a backdrop? Picture “Agent Cody Banks” star Frankie Muniz as a baritone with the Santa Clara Vanguard who’s courting the affections of actress Lindsay Lohan, as she struggles to perfect her show with the Phantom Regiment color guard. Their summer fling has all the trappings of teen love – jealousy as Muniz’s corps jumps out to an early-season lead over Lohan’s Regiment; betrayal as Lohan spots Muniz yucking it up with an attractive SCV pit member; despair as Lohan learns her family dog has died while she is on tour; perseverance as Muniz battles a severe case of athlete’s foot to continue marching; romance as Muniz and Lohan steal kisses in the romantic setting of a parking lot; love, as Muniz announces his plans to attend Rockford College in the fall to be closer to his true love; and finally irony, as Muniz’s character finds out that Lohan’s dad has been hired by Santa Clara University. The “music-video-within-the-movie” that plagues every film made in the past 10 years could feature an updated version – think Hillary Duff or Ruben Studdard – of the Bachman-Turner Overdrive classic, “Takin’ Care of Business.” Quick edits and wavering camera angles of the two corps rehearsing their shows, complete with the occasional close-up of a marcher bending over in agony after he pulls a muscle. Throw in a food fight during lunch, a pillow fight on the bus and an obligatory shot of someone polishing a horn as Duff sings “I’ve been taking care of business, it’s all
mine. Taking care of business and working overtime. Work out.” By summer’s end, the song will be omnipresent on radios and cell phone tones across the country. If the summer love angle doesn’t work for you, here are a few other concepts: Divine intervention drama: In this scenario, viewers follow the struggle of a down-on-its-luck drum corps as its director plans to fold the tents after one final season. But as former members come to the Memorial Day camp to celebrate the kick-off of the corps’ final summer, they find themselves magically returned to their youth after they drink from the sacred water cooler. A full corps hits the field in June, and the corps never looks back, although hundreds of spouses and children never see their loved ones again. Feel-good enforcer: A vigilante drum corps takes back the inner-city neighborhoods where drum corps once thrived. No guns, though. Instead, instructors and members take the time to introduce the idea of making music to kids who might not have ever had the chance to participate in the activity. Giant Hollywood epic: “Whitewater 1976!” This giant project would feature a small college town taken over by drum corps and killer cicadas on the same weekend. As townspeople and college students cower in fear, members of the 20 or so attending corps try to wipe out the annoying insects with perfect pitch and impressive toe lift. When that fails, they call on their cooking crews, who, working together, create a batch of tuna salad so rancid that it kills everything in its path. Tuna flies, cicadas die and the field is cleared in time for the show. Children’s movie: Follow the animated adventures of Teddy Tuba as he searches for acceptance within the music community, only to be shunned by Victor Violin, Harriet Harp and Gary Guitar. Feeling ashamed, Teddy goes to hide in the bay of a bus, where he comes in contact with Terry Trumpet, Bobby Baritone and all their friends. Teddy’s home at last! Chick flick: Two sisters – played by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, of course – spend a year washing dishes, milking cows and doing dozens of other odd jobs to save up money to march one season with an East Coast perennial contender. Their elation over making the corps is short-lived once they find out Pa’s leg has been injured by his prize hog. They decide only one sister can stay and march while the other sister must return home to help on the farm. Feel-good ending has East Coast corps director taking sister’s place on farm for the summer, determined to do whatever it takes to help his kids. A warning, though. This summer is sure to be ripe with its share of movie clichés – many of which have already been used in the magazine you’re holding. By the time the live simulcast rolls around, there’s a chance we’ll be so sick of “Lights, camera, drum corps!” that we’ll scream. With that in mind, the first person to say, “I laughed. I cried, on his or her way out of the theater gets banned from the activity for a year. Marco Buscaglia marched with The Cavalier Cadets from 1978-83, and The Cavaliers from 1984-89.
