Benefits of Medical Animation+multimedia

•Easy explanation of scientific information •Visualization of things that can’t be seen •Representation of subjects in 3D •Use of motion •Addition of interactivity

Some things Patient education can do • Increase knowledge of intended audience • Influence perceptions and beliefs that could shape norms/policy • Reinforce healthy behavior • Increase demand for services • Refute myths • Advocate a position • Increase surveillance and disease awareness • Distribute emergency messages in a real time

A few studies on Use of

Multimedia in Patient Education

Effective and efficient teaching intervention Outcomes of videotape instruction in clinic waiting area. - Oermann MH, Webb SA, et al. College of Nursing, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, The purpose of our study was to examine the effectiveness of general health-promotion teaching for patients in the waiting room of a clinic, using focused videotape instruction. FINDINGS: There was a significant gain in knowledge for patients who viewed the videotape in the waiting room (t = 5.43, df = 213, p < .0001), and they were more satisfied with their education compared with the control group (t = 4.73, df = 213, p < .0001). IMPLICATIONS: This study supports focused video instruction as an for disseminating health information in the waiting area. Cost effective A video lesson series is effective in changing the dietary intakes and food-related behaviors of low-income homemakers. Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, State University, Blacksburg 24061, USA. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative cost-effectiveness of a selfadministered video series in delivering nutrition education to lowincome homemakers. RESULTS: Significant improvements were observed in both groups for fruits, calcium, and vitamins A and C. The Video Group improved on fiber intake (P<or=.005). The groups did not differ on dietary or behavior change (P=.2357). Duplication and implementation costs of the video series totaled 4,820 dollars, or 36% of the traditional lesson cost of 13,463 dollars. Audiovisual demonstration for patient counseling in the use of pressurized aerosol bronchodilator inhalers.

Pharmacy Practice Research Group, School of Pharmacy, Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The use of video as a method of instructing subjects on correct inhaler technique was compared with the written and personal instruction of 150 volunteer subjects with no previous experience of such a device. Video was found to be as effective as personal tuition by a pharmacist and significantly (P less than 0.05) superior to the manufacturer's package insert in teaching correct inhaler. Asthmatic patients found the video useful at identifying mistakes they were making and felt that this approach to their education should be more widely available.
