What should I do first? This is the question I get asked more than any other by new Jeep Owners! And honestly there is no right or wrong answer, only opinions! Your new Jeep is hands down one of the most capable stock vehicles you can purchase. As it sits you are able to do MUCH more than probably you are willing to attempt. But customizing a Jeep is a big part of the fun, so let’s try and answer this question. Most of the Jeeps I have built over the years follow the same basic plan. First I lift it, next is wheels and tires, then lights, then usually on down the road I get a winch, bumpers, and more armor to avoid damages. Most people tend to follow the same path, they really want the bigger Jeep look so they jump right on a lift and tires. Well recently I was talking to a buddy of mine that owns an Offroad shop, and he pointed out the flaw in my logic. Let’s say you decide to go take the family out and run some trials and before you know it you have gotten into WAY more than you expected, and find yourself stuck...bigger tires and a lift are NOT going to get you out! The smarter way to build your rig, would be to start out with a winch, and recovery gear! There are adapter plates that will bolt up to a factory bumper and allow you to add a winch. This way no matter what happens you have a way to get yourself, or your crazy buddies out of a mess. Tow straps and D rings are other items I would get pretty quick and carry with you at all times. This allows you to hook up to someone else and pull them out, or help you get out. Once you have these, then start looking into lifts and tires and everything else. Again, this is just an opinion, but considering the phone calls and texts I get at 10:00 at night that say, “ ummm hey buddy I hate to bother you, but I’m stuck! Will you come get me?” leads me to believe this is an educated opinion! As always thanks for checking out my thoughts!
