The rapid-fire victories of Chief’s Crown in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes and Contredance in the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes at the 1984 Saratoga meeting created some serious buzz for the second crop of their sire, Danzig, at the subsequent Keeneland September yearling sale. The principal beneficiary of that excitement was the late Lee Eaton and partners, who sold a beautiful colt out of Foreign Courier, by Sir Ivor, an unraced daughter of their blue hen mare Courtly Dee, for $650,000. Named Green Desert by his purchaser, Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, he was every bit as good as he looked, becoming the first of Danzig’s six Group 1 July Cup winners, winning three other group races, and running second in the Group 1 English 2000 Guineas. Retired to the Shadwell Stud of Sheikh Mohammed’s brother, Sheikh Hamdan, Green Desert quickly developed into a top-class sire of sprinters and milers, climbing as high as fourth on the English sire list in 1991. In a long and extraordinarily consistent stud career, Green Desert sired 99 stakes winners to date (with eight 2-year-olds still in the pipeline) from 1,238 foals (8 percent), including 12 Grade and Group 1 winners, but none of them was an obvious successor at stud. Nevertheless, Green Desert has developed into one of the best sires of sires of the era, with his sons Oasis Dream, Cape Cross, Invincible Spirit, Desert Sun, and Volksraad all established as top sires somewhere in the world. The victory of Invincible Spirit’s brilliant daughter Moonlight Cloud in a loaded edition of the Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois on Aug. 11 is the latest reminder of Green Desert’s genetic importance. A winner of 7 of 17 starts from 2 to 5, including the 2002 Group 1 Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup, Invincible Spirit (out of Rafha, by Kris) has fashioned a high-class stud career from relatively humble beginnings at the Irish National Stud. Moonlight Cloud is the best of his 68 stakes winners to date from 1,022 foals ages 3 and older, and while that 7 percent strike rate is not overwhelming, the quality of his best offspring, especially his fillies, has been remarkable. Invincible Spirit began his stud career in the best possible way with a classic-winning colt in his first crop. Lawman (Laramie, by Gulch) counted the 2007 Group 1 French Derby and Prix Jean Prat among his four victories in seven starts, and he remains probably the best colt sired to date by Invincible Spirit. Lawman also has made a promising start at stud, with nine stakes winners in his first two crops, headed by 2013 Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner Just The Judge, 2012 Group 1 St. James’s Palace Stakes winner Most Improved, and 2012 Italian highweight and Group 1 winner Law Enforcement.

sparkman Continued from page 3 Vale of York (Red Vale, by Halling), the upset winner of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2009, and Mayson (Mayleaf, by Pivotal), the winner of the July Cup last year, are Invincible Spirit’s only other male top-level winners. Moonlight Cloud, on the other hand, is one of five Group 1-winning fillies by Invincible Spirit, including yet another July Cup winner, 2009 European champion sprinter Fleeting Spirit (Millennium Tale, by Distant Relative). Moonlight Cloud is the second stakes winner from the first five foals out of Ventura, by Spectrum, a stakes-placed filly bred and raced by the late, great trainer Vincent O’Brien, from one of the best families in the international stud book. James Wigan of London Thoroughbred Services purchased Ventura on behalf of his longtime client, American breeder George Strawbridge, for $748,020 at the end of her racing days at the 2001 Tattersalls Newmarket December sale. Strawbridge sold Ventura, in foal to Manduro, for only $100,308 at the same sale eight years later. After Moonlight Cloud’s two wins in three starts as a juvenile in 2010, Ventura passed through the Newmarket ring again, in foal to Montjeu, for $425,716, with David Redvers buying her on behalf of Sheikh Fahad al Thani. Last year, after Moonlight Cloud captured the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and her second of three consecutive runnings of the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, Vincent O’Brien’s namesake and grandson, M.V. Magnier, signed a $1,458,986 bill of sale for Ventura on behalf of the Coolmore partnership on the mare’s fourth trip through the Tattersalls auction ring. Unlike the brilliant sprinter-miler Moonlight Cloud, Ventura’s first foal, Cedar Mountain, by Galileo, was an outand-out stayer, winning the 1 3/4-mile Round Table Handicap in course-record time and finishing second in the Grade 2, 1 1/2-mile Sunset Handicap. Ventura was the only black-type horse out of her dam, Group 3 winner Wedding Bouquet, by Kings Lake, but her half-sisters are dams or second dams of four stakes winners, led by Group 2 winner Probably, by Danehill Dancer. Moonlight Cloud’s third dam, Doff the Derby, by Master Derby, was one of the best European-based broodmares of the late 20th century. Purchased privately by David Nagle’s Barronstown Stud, Doff the Derby had by that time already produced stakes winner Windy Triple K., by Jaklin Klugman. She produced five more stakes winners for Nagle, led by multiple European classic winners Generous, by Caerleon, and Imagine, by Sadler’s Wells. Generous, a big, raking, long-striding horse, was the champion of his generation in England and Ireland, winning the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at 2 and the Group 1 Epsom Derby, Irish Derby, and

Green Desert, shown at stud in 2005, sired successful stallions such as Oasis Dream, Cape Cross, and Invincible Spirit.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at 3. Generous was only modestly successful at stud in Ireland and was permanently exported to New Zealand. Imagine captured both the Group 1 Epsom Oaks and Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas in 2001, when she ranked as the best 3-year-old filly in England and Ireland. Imagine has also been an exemplary broodmare, producing three group winners, led by Group 1 winner Horatio Nelson, by Danehill. Doff the Derby’s Last Tycoon colt, Osumi Tycoon, was sold to Japan, where he won two group stakes, and Imagine’s full sister Strawberry Roan was a stakes winner who finished second in the Irish 1000 Guineas. Though unraced herself, Doff the Derby was attractive to a high-level European breeder like Nagle because she was a half-sister to the great racemare and broodmare Trillion, by Hail to Reason, who earned championship honors in both the United States and France in the late 1970s. Trillion produced an even better

racemare in Triptych, by Riverman, who won nine Group 1 events in Europe in the mid-1980s. Sadly, Triptych was struck by lightning and died before producing a foal. Triptych’s full sister Barger was a Group 3 winner but produced two stakes winners and is the granddam of Group 1 winner Tawqeet, by Kingmambo. Tryptych’s and Barger’s unraced half-sister Trevilla, by Lyphard, is the dam of Group 1 winner Treble, by Riverman, the granddam of European champion sprinter Tamarisk, by none other than Green Desert, and the third dam of the undefeated Treve, by Motivator, the winner of this year’s Group 1 French Oaks. Other branches of the great female family descending from Moonlight Cloud’s multiple stakes-winning fourth dam, foundation mare Margarethen, by Tulyar, have produced Grade/Group 1 winners Juvenia, Sabona, Landseer, Amorama, and Bullish Luck. Moonlight Cloud is inbred 4x5 to Northern Dancer, with additional duplications of Round Table, Nasrullah, Native Dancer,

and Never Bend in the fifth and sixth generations, which is all pretty standard stuff these days. Unlike her dam, Moonlight Cloud is most unlikely to pass through the sales ring, barring the untimely death of her owner-breeder. Strawbridge has long been one of the most successful international breeders, regularly producing Group 1 and Grade 1 winners on both sides of the Atlantic from a relatively small broodmare band. Moonlight Cloud defeated three of Europe’s best 3-year-old milers – Olympic Glory, Intello, and Dawn Approach – in the Marois, her fifth Group 1 victory. She also came close to ending the great Australian mare Black Caviar’s undefeated skein, falling a head short in last year’s Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. The 2013 Marois was her 11th victory in 18 career starts, and, all being well, she is likely to end her career in this fall’s Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita. She finished eighth behind Wise Dan in last year’s running.

For Brennan, the search for young talent never ends By Joe nevills

niall Brennan

While inspecting yearlings at sales this summer and fall, Niall Brennan can be seen wearing his usual white baseball cap, sporting his stable’s logo – a green shamrock encasing the golden letters “NB.” But something is noticeably different about his headgear this yearling season. Above the right ear is a small, stitched rendering of the red and white silks of Stuart Janney III, the co-owner and co-breeder of Kentucky Derby winner Orb. On the other side is a set of green and yellow silks representing Dogwood Stable, the winner of this year’s Belmont Stakes with Palace Malice. Both horses were graduates of Brennan’s training program in their adolescent months, meaning the Ocala, Fla., resident quietly had a massive influence on the outcome of this year’s Triple Crown season. While the new hat design serves as a reminder of Brennan’s unforgettable classic campaign, it’s nonetheless time to look toward the future and work just as hard. “It’s certainly very humbling and very gratifying to have had an abundance of blessings this year, but I don’t see it like this all just happens once,” Brennan said. “In this business, you’re only as good as your last horse – as a trainer, as an owner, as an agent, as a buyer, as a seller, you just have to keep that approach. You still have to get out there and do the work the next day. That’s the game, and that’s how it is.” A native of Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland, Brennan is one of North America’s perennial leading consignors of 2-yearolds in training, and his team has amassed a long list of black-type winners who got their start with Brennan. Among the other horses to spend time in Brennan’s program since he went into business for himself in 1990 are Grade/ Group 1 winners Point of Entry, Golden Ticket, Dayatthespa, Data Link, Afleet Express, Wickedly Perfect, Kurofune, Nobo True, Yonaguska, and Thorn Song, to name a few. Brennan, 52, credits his father, champion steeplechase jockey and respected Irish trainer Liam Brennan, for giving him and his brother the tools for success in the equine industry. In addition to Niall’s big spring with Orb and Palace Malice, his brother, Ian, got Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow started at Stonestreet Training and Rehabilitation Center in Summerfield, Fla., giving the family its own version of the Triple Crown. “My dad was a very good horseman, and just being around him, you learn a lot of things you don’t realize you’re learning,” he said. “We were always around the horses, and it was just part of growing up.” After a juvenile sale season where Brennan was among the top consignors in a steadily improving market, the stalls must once again be filled for the next season. The process has already begun, and more horses will arrive as the Keeneland

September yearling sale kicks into gear. Brennan’s motto, “Success is no accident,” is evident in the due diligence he shows in his inspection process as he analyzes prospects. When inspecting yearlings, especially at a marathon auction like the Keeneland September sale, Brennan splits the catalog with his longtime business partner, bloodstock agent Mike Ryan, and each inspects his half of the day’s offerings. The following day, they switch halves, focusing on the horses that comprise each other’s shortlists, before coming to a consensus on which ones to pursue, and at what price. “I don’t think you can expect success there without working very hard,” Brennan said. “We look all day, and as soon as the sale’s over, we’re working on the next day’s catalog ... I’ll look over Mike’s shortlist, and he’ll look at the ones I really like, so then we’ll have both seen the horses. We’ll always see a horse twice. We very rarely buy a horse off of just one look. We will always between us see a horse at least twice, if not three times. “Mike and I have worked together for

so long, we almost know how each other thinks. Over the years, I’ve learned an awful lot from Mike, and I think we approach things the same way.” While Brennan may be best known for his work on the sales grounds, his training program also receives several homebreds and others not destined for the 2-year-old market. Brennan said the pace of development is usually accelerated for sale horses, headed toward a market that demands perfection, but sometimes a homebred keeps up the pace. Such was the case with a bay Malibu Moon colt who arrived from Claiborne Farm in the summer of 2011. Bred by Phipps Stable and Janney, the colt would later be known as Derby winner Orb. Getting the colt headed toward his place in history, though, had its occasional rough patches. “Sometimes, the Malibu Moons can be a little bit challenging in the early stages. Boys will be boys, and Orb was a little like that,” Brennan said. “He was a bit challenging through the breaking process, but he had good energy. Once he got past

that after Christmastime and into January, you could really see the light go on for him, and he just started to focus better and really love his training. He brought himself along in February and March on the schedule that a lot of the sale horses were on.” Joining Orb in that season’s class was Palace Malice, a Curlin colt whom Brennan picked up as a pinhooking prospect for $25,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale. Palace Malice wasn’t perfect – he had a small bone chip on a hind ankle that Brennan ultimately deemed insignificant – but he was still one who showed up on each team member’s shortlist. Brennan described the colt as something of a late bloomer during the roughly seven months under his watch, understandable for a May foal, and planned his sale schedule accordingly. Palace Malice was entered in the Keeneland April sale of 2-year-olds in training, where he went to Cot Campbell’s Dogwood Stable for $200,000. “He progressed very nicely,” Brennan said. “He was very young in his mind. When it came to be November, December, he was doing everything right, but he was just a young horse. The light wasn’t going on as quick for him as it might for other horses. “He was physically doing very well, but we decided probably around the end of December, when we really try to start focusing in on which sales you would point these young horses to, that it just made sense to give him a bit more time and go to the Keeneland sale in April.” Now, as the summer turns to fall, vans will be headed toward Brennan’s farm filled with yearlings to break for next year’s sales and races. Perhaps a few will one day be mentioned in the same breath as their distinguished predecessors. If they do, Brennan won’t spend too much time resting on his laurels. Before long, he’ll have more yearlings to buy. “You still go out every morning and put your pants on one leg at a time and go back to work,” Brennan said. “Nothing changes, and that’s what we deal with, doing the same as we always do with the approach in the yearling sales.”

Point of Entry, a homebred for the Phipps Stable and a five-time Grade 1 winner, received his early schooling from Niall Brennan in Ocala, Fla.

By Joe nevills Niall Brennan discusses some of the most successful graduates from his sales and training program.

Point oF entry B. h., 2008, Dynaformer—Matlacha Pass, by Seeking the Gold Training program graduate, homebred for Phipps Stable Five-time Grade 1 winner “He was from the first group of yearlings that I got from the Phippses. I was always a big fan of Dynaformer, and I loved Point of Entry as a yearling. He didn’t quite have the substance as a yearling that a lot of Dynaformers would have. He did have many of the Dynaformer traits, but he was a tall, very leggy colt. He was a high-energy colt as a yearling, then as a 2-year-old you could see there was a ton of athletic ability, but he was kind of stringy, probably something like LeBron James when he was 10 years old. You could see it all in there, and you knew [it would come out] when the horse fills out.”

He was a very well-made, tidy colt as a 2-year-old, but I really thought he was going to be more of a typical Speightstown – a sprinter. I thought he was a very quick horse. He worked quick, he showed speed, and physically, he looked more like a sprinter. To be honest, I never thought at that time that he would be a mile-and-aquarter Travers horse.”

She was a very typical City Zip to her body, and she had great action and a great way about her. She leaned into her knees pretty good, but she vetted clean. It didn’t bother me because she just moved so well through it.”

OBS August yearling sale looks to ride upward trend By Joe nevills It was a good spring in Ocala, Fla. The three sales that comprise the 2-yearolds-in-training portion of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. calendar posted acrossthe-board gains in 2013. Records fell for average and median prices at the March select sale, while the spring and June auctions posted all-time highs in those areas as well as by gross. The June sale added another accolade to the list when a $525,000 Pioneerof the Nile colt became the most expensive juvenile in that sale’s history. The sales company will look to continue that run of good fortune with the OBS August yearling sale Tuesday through Thursday. “We’re certainly anticipating a good sale,” said Tod Wojciechowski, OBS director of sales. “It seemed like the [Fasig-Tipton Kentucky] July yearling sale kicked off the yearling sale season well, and we hope to continue down that path. We certainly had a lot of momentum coming out of our 2-year-old sales, and we hope that momentum continues.” The sale will be divided into two portions, with a 178-horse select session on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern. Two open sessions will follow Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. “I think we’ve got a very nice selection for our select sale,” Wojciechowski said. “It’s a good group of horses from a number of leading sires around the United States and some good first-year sires, as well as proven sires of runners.” The August sale catalog experienced significant growth in 2013, expanding to 841 horses, up 12 percent from the 751 yearlings cataloged last summer. Last August’s select session saw 132 horses sold for a total of $5,782,000, up 35 percent from 2011. The average sale price was up 17 percent to $43,803, while the me-

hot sires: blame, desert party, and super saver

First-CroP stUds in deMand at sPa By Patrick reed The recent Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling and New York-bred preferred yearling sales both enjoyed robust trade and concluded with outstanding key measures, including double-digit spikes in average and median prices and substantially lower buyback rates. Following a solid beginning to the yearling auction season at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July, the New York sales reaffirmed a level of market stability that has not been seen since the prerecession years of 2006 and 2007. Each year introduces a fresh group of first-crop yearling sires, and at this early stage, foals from three newcomers have been well received at the Fasig-Tipton auctions. Claiborne Farm stallion Blame was one of the stars of the Saratoga select yearling sale, with six yearlings selling for a total of $1,360,000 – eighth-best among all sires – for an average of $226,667. In the New York-bred sale, all six of the available yearlings by Sequel Stallions New York’s Desert Party sold, bringing a total of $667,000, for an average of $111,167. And five of seven offered by WinStar’s Super Saver sold for a total of $550,000 and an average of $110,000. Blame had one yearling cataloged at the Fasig-Tipton July sale, a filly named Seeking Paradise out of the winner Eden’s Storm and from Theatrical’s and Paradise Creek’s family, who sold for $77,000 to Wesley Melcher. However, his yearlings were in high demand at the boutique Saratoga select sale, which should be no surprise since he is one of the best-pedigreed and most accomplished racehorses of the first-crop sires. This was evident last year, when his weanlings averaged $128,718 at sales. A multiple Grade 1 winner on dirt – most notably defeating Zenyatta in the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic – Blame’s bloodlines suggest he could be a versatile sire. Several of his sire and fellow Claiborne resident Arch’s best runners have come on grass, and Blame is closely related to leading sire Nureyev and globe-trotting multimillionaire turfer Archipenko on his dam’s side. Blame’s top Saratoga select yearling, a colt out of the stakes-placed King of Kings mare Kivi, sold out of the Lane’s End consignment for $335,000 to agent Randy Gullatt of Twin Creeks Racing. He is a half-brother to Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Regally Ready and comes from the family of three top-flight French runners – the classic-placed Vilikaia, Group 1 winner Maximova, and Group 2 winner Navratilovna. Yearlings by Desert Party and Super Saver were well received at Fasig-Tipton BarBara d. livingston

hot sires Continued from page 9 Kentucky’s July auction. Desert Party’s filly out of Lil Cozette topped the sale at $460,000, and five of his nine offered sold for a total of $626,000, an average of $125,200. Super Saver had three yearlings sell for $535,000, an average of $178,333. Neither stallion was represented by yearlings at the Saratoga select sale, but they both picked up the momentum in the New York-bred auction. The most expensive of Desert Party’s progeny at the New York-bred sale went for $200,000 to agent Mike Mareina for Kuehne Racing. Consigned by Indian Creek, as agent, the bay colt is out of the Salt Lake mare Salt Water Reign, who won six races and earned more than $220,000. Four of the six yearlings by Desert Party sold at the New York-bred sale went for six figures. After being purchased as a juvenile for $2.1 million by Sheikh Mohammed alMaktoum’s agent, John Ferguson, at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Florida sale, Desert Party took the Grade 2 Sanford Stakes and captured three more stakes at 3 and 4, two of them Group 3 races in Dubai. The son of Street Cry began his stud career at Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Ky., before relocating to Becky Thomas’s Sequel Stallions in New York for 2013, when he stood for $7,500. Super Saver, the 2010 Kentucky Derby winner who stands for a stud fee of $20,000, had three of his five yearlings sell at Fasig-Tipton New York for six figures, and another sold for $95,000. His top seller, a filly out of the multiple stakes-winning Two Punch mare Reata’s Quik Punch, was bought by Clark Brewster for $230,000 from Select Sales, agent. Super Saver is by Maria’s Mon, from a very good female family with a lot of connections to New York’s contemporary breeding industry as well to the Empire State’s racing past. His dam, the A.P. Indy mare Supercharger, produced Grade 3 winner Brethren, stakes-placed Lisa T., and stakes producer Quickest. Second dam Get Lucky was a Grade 3 winner at

Three of her four stakes-winning foals are full siblings to Supercharger, including Vosburgh and Jerome winner Girolamo, who stands at Sequel in New York. Another full sibling to Supercharger, the unraced mare She’s a Winner, is the dam of Grade 1 winner and 2006 Derby runner-

up Bluegrass Cat, the Empire State’s current leading sire, who stands at Vinery at Sugar Maple in Poughquag. Desert Party has three yearlings cataloged for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. August select sale, which will be held Tuesday, as does Super Saver. Super Saver also has a yearling cataloged for OBS’s open sale on Wednesday and Thursday.

All three first-crop sires are wellrepresented in the important Keeneland September sale, which runs Sept. 9-21. Blame has 26 yearlings cataloged in Book 1, 12 in Book 2, and three in Book 3. Desert Party has three yearlings in Book 1, one in Book 2, and 17 in Books 3, 4, and 5, while Super Saver has four in Book 1, 17 in Book 2, and a whopping 40 in Books 3, 4, and 5.

Catching up with wando

Canadian ChaMPion has sWeet disPosition By nicole russo The gentle nature of the coppery chestnut stallion in the field at Gustav Schickedanz’s Schonberg Farm near Nobleton, Ontario, belies his background as one of the most celebrated runners of his generation. “He’s a true gentleman,” farm manager Lauri Kenny says of Wando. “He’s a really old soul, a lovely horse.” So gentle is Wando, in fact, that some days he behaves more like a family pet than a Thoroughbred stallion. “When he’s out in the middle of his field grazing, if you’re agile enough, you can throw a leg right over and sit on his back, and he’ll walk along and graze a little bit with you on his back – and not have any problem with that at all,” Kenny said. “He is so relaxed. I’ve never seen him nip at anyone or bite at anyone. If he’s lying down, you could walk over and lay down with him between his legs and put your head on his tummy. “But he certainly had fire on the racetrack.” That fire burned bright a decade ago this month, as Wando posted a game victory over Shoal Water in the Breeders’ Stakes to become Canada’s seventh, and most recent, Triple Crown winner. “As it gets farther away – and we know there won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year – the longer it gets, it’s actually more impressive to look back at,” Kenny said. “When you win some big races, especially the Triple Crown, for weeks after, you’ll be walking around, and you’ll just sort of jump in the air. That’s something that’s with you forever.” Wando was the product of Schickedanz’s long-crafted breeding program. The owner was born in Germany, where his family raised Trakehner horses at a farm along the Baltic Sea. Schickedanz emigrated to Canada in 1950, and he and three brothers made their fortune in the family business, the construction company Schickedanz Brothers Ltd. His family involvement extends into racing – one of his brothers originally dabbled in Thoroughbred ownership with him, and his nephew is embattled owner Bruno Schickedanz, who is not affiliated with the Schonberg operation. After dabbling in horse racing during

BarBara d. livingston

Wando, who stands for 3,500 Canadian dollars, became the seventh horse to win the Canadian Triple Crown in 2003.

the 1960s, Gustav Schickedanz began acquiring fillies in the following decade to build up a broodmare band. According to Kenny, the majority of Schonberg’s success has been accomplished independently by breeding to local and/or lesserknown stallions. The seeds of Wando’s success were sown in the early 1990s. “In 1991, we had a virus abortion storm,” Kenny said. “We had 17 mares in foal and nine live foals. And the first mare to abort was in foal to Seattle Slew. It was a devastating year. But the next year, we had 20 foals, 17 starters, 17 winners, and six stakes winners.” The standout from the crop of 1992 was Langfuhr, who earned the 1996 Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion sprinter. Another 1992 foal for Schonberg was Kentucky Oaks winner Gal in a Ruckus, who raced for John Oxley. Also in the crop was Kathie’s Colleen, a daughter of Woodman who got a rough start to life but quickly became a farm favorite. “She was an orphan – her mum died in the breeding shed when she was 28 or 29 days old, and she was raised on a nurse mare,” Kenny said. “You spend so much more time with [nurse-mare foals], just getting them to nurse, [and] they always

are a little more special.” Kathie’s Colleen went on to win the Grade 2 Monmouth Oaks before joining the Schonberg broodmare band. In the spring of 1999 – just months before Schickedanz notched his first Queen’s Plate win with Woodcarver – she was bred to Langfuhr, and she delivered the resulting colt, Wando, on Feb. 23, 2000. Like all the Schonberg yearlings, Wando was raised and broken to saddle at his birthplace, then sent to trainer Mike Keogh in South Carolina just after the holidays in 2001. Wando won three of his first four starts, including two stakes, but disappointed when he ran 12th in the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Arlington Park. Still, the colt was made the winter-book favorite for the Queen’s Plate, and on June 22, 1993, he lived up to that billing with a dominant nine-length win. Wando had won two stakes earlier in 1993 leading up to the Queen’s Plate, and in that classic he defeated stablemate Mobil, another highly rated son of Langfuhr who would go on to win four Grade 3 races and be named Canada’s champion older horse in 2004. Wando next won the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie – the second leg of the

wando Continued from page 11 Canadian Triple Crown – by four lengths before returning to Woodbine to contest the Breeders’ Stakes on turf. The colt departed from his normal front-running style in the 1 1/2-mile test, stalking the pace early, but still kicked clear late to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Despite not being at the track that day, Kenny’s memories of Wando’s Triple Crown-sealing win are vivid. “I was there for the first two [wins], and then Mobil was running in the West Virginia Derby on Breeders’ Stakes Day, and Mr. Schickedanz asked me to go to West Virginia with Mobil,” Kenny said. “So, I saw the race on a computer screen as Mobil was in the paddock. The elation was just unbelievable. I’ve watched replays of that race so many times. [Wando] showed an awful lot of heart to get up.” The Triple Crown was the height of Wando’s form and led to his recognition in 1993 as Canada’s Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male. He would win only three more races at 4 and 5, including the 2004 Mt. Sassafras Stakes, and retired with 11 wins from 23 career starts and

earnings of $2,563,038, which included a bonus for winning the Triple Crown. Wando entered stud at Will Farish’s Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., alongside his sire, who was in the process of building an impressive résumé. Unlike Langfuhr, Wando struggled to attract attention in the high-end Kentucky market. His stud fee dropped from an initial $10,000 in 2006 to $5,000 in 2010. That summer, he was repatriated to Schonberg to stand at his birthplace, alongside Mobil, who has since relocated to Ohio. Although he has settled in well, Wando, who stands for 3,500 Canadian dollars, remains quite active. “When Langfuhr started out at Vinery, he made crop circles,” Kenny said. “He will walk around and around and around. Wando is also like that – he does an awful lot of walking. He probably put on 100 pounds when Mobil left [because he was more relaxed]. But when spring comes, when breeding season comes, he’s probably going to start walking again.” Despite moving to the region he excelled in as a racehorse, Wando has not attracted much interest as a sire, in part because

of the overall uncertainty about the Canadian bloodstock market due to the government’s elimination of the Slots at Racetracks program. According to statistics on file with The Jockey Club, Wando bred 10 mares in 2010, his final season in Kentucky. He bred 15 and 18 mares in his next two seasons in Canada. Through Aug. 11, Wando had sired 66 winners from 97 starters for total progeny earnings of $4,895,150. Far and away his best runner is Turallure, who emerged from his first crop in 2007. A 4-D Stables homebred trained by Charlie LoPresti, Turallure has bankrolled $1,363,314 to date, scoring his biggest win in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile in 2011 and finishing second by a nose in that year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile. Kenny cited Wando’s lack of standout juveniles as one reason the stallion has struggled to maintain commercial viability, noting that Langfuhr’s offspring also tend to improve as older runners. “Wando makes a bigger foal than Langfuhr, it seems. He turns out a big horse,” Kenny said. “They maybe take a little longer, and maybe if they were given a little more time, they might mature.”

Wando’s first Canadian-sired foals are yearlings, and Schonberg houses 12. The majority of those will be offered between the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s Ontario Division selected yearling sale and the Keeneland September yearling sale as Schickedanz, 84, cuts back on his program. Schickedanz, however, plans to retain the final foal out of Kathie’s Colleen, a Curlin filly. “She’s special; she’s like a family member, so we’re keeping her,” Kenny said. “He probably will keep one other filly, possibly [one by] Wando, to keep her company.” While her son makes his way as a sire in Canada, Kathie’s Colleen, now 21, is retired on Schickedanz’s farm in Springfield, near Aiken, S.C., where the owner winters with his wife. The farm’s other residents include Langfuhr’s dam, Sweet Briar Too (now 27), and grandam, Prima Babu Gum (33), along with Sovereign Award-winning champion sprinter Glanmire (23). “The Schickedanzes really look after the horses that have been good to them,” Kenny said. “They look after them like family.”
