EAST LANSING

Fishing allowed on MSU’s Red Cedar River For the first time in nearly 50 years, people are allowed to fish in the Red Cedar River on Michigan State University's campus. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday that hook-andline fishing will be permitted on the north bank of the river between the western edge of Brody Complex and the Sparty bridge. A 1960s ordinance banned fishing on MSU's campus. People were not allowed to hunt, gather or fish because the East Lansing campus is considered a preserve. There also were safety concerns about fishing in areas with high pedestrian traffic. The MSU board of trustees approved the change last December. The new law will undergo a three-year test period. People interested in fishing in this part of the Red Cedar River must have a fishing license.

Nike announces sponsorship deal with McIlroy Nike announced that it signed a sponsorship deal with No. 1-ranked Rory McIlroy for a reported $200 million on Monday. The deal was announced in a lavish ceremony in the United Arab Emirates ahead of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, which begins this week. Nike now represents golf's two biggest stars in McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who has been with the sportswear company since turning pro in 1996. In October, McIlroy cut ties with Acushnet Co., which had supplied him with Titleist and FootJoy gear since he turned pro five years ago. And this month, Jumeirah Group announced it was not renewing its five-year sponsorship deal with the Northern Irishman.

Auburn spokesman Kirk Sampson said Tuesday that Newton is taking classes toward a sociology degree. Sampson says Newton isn't doing media interviews and ''wants to focus on school and be a normal student.'' Newton led the Tigers to the 2010 national championship in his lone season after transferring from junior college. He was then the NFL's No. 1 overall draft pick and went on to earn Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Penn St. attacks claims by McQueary By Mark Scolforo The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Penn State’s lawyers asked a judge Tuesday to throw out a whistleblower and defamation lawsuit filed by a former assistant football coach who testified he saw Jerry Sandusky attack a boy in a school shower more than a decade ago. Mike McQueary’s lawsuit is too vague and does not meet legal standards to support claims of defamation and misrepresentation, the university wrote in a court filing.

HILLSDALE — After a cold-shooting first half, the Hillsdale High School boys basketball team was in need of spark. Andrew Wilcox and Patrick Drews provided one. Wilcox did all his scoring in the second half while Drews lead all scorers Tuesday as the Hornets pulled away for a 61-37 victory over the Ida Bluestreaks in a Lenawee County Athletic Association game. Hillsdale (9-1, 5-1 LCAA) picked up its seventh straight win to keep pace with the conference leaders and closed out a perfect five-game home stand. The Hornets will make their longest road trip of the season Friday when they head to Monroe County to face Erie Mason. They return home Jan. 25 to face Dundee. “We’ve talked about having to win at home, and generally we’ve been good here,” Hillsdale coach Brad Felix said. “When you have four or five teams vying for the league title, every game becomes important. We’ll have a great challenge Friday making a two-hour bus ride to face a quality team.” The Hornets only made one field goal in the second quarter, but carried a 23-16 lead into Jimmy Chase drives to the basket for the Hillsdale High School boys basketball SEE HORNETS, B2

IDA — After playing through one of the toughest parts of its schedule, the Hillsdale High School girls basketball team is looking to rebound. The Hornets fell into a deep hole and never recovered Tuesday in a 75-36 loss to the Ida Bluestreaks in a Lenawee County Athletic Association game. Hillsdale (6-4, 2-4 LCAA) dropped its third straight game. All three of its losses have come against some of the top girls basketball teams in the conference - Blissfield last Tuesday, Onsted on Friday and Ida. “This was last of the three toughest games on our schedule,” Hillsdale coach Nick Langston said. “(Ida) was the best team that’s played us so far. They have a lot of experience with four returning starters.” Ida quickly asserted itself, opening the game on a 17-2 run in the first quarter. The Bluestreaks continued their hot shooting in the second quarter and extended their lead to 369 by halftime. “We fell way down and they kept making shots,” Langston said. “They were just on fire tonight and didn’t miss.” Hillsdale played better in the third quarter, scoring 19 points while matching baskets with Ida, but it was not enough to get back in the game. Bears call back three coaching candidates

NORTH ADAMS — Speed paid off in a big way for the North Adams-Jerome boys basketball team. Three players scored in double figures and strong pressure defense helped the Rams close out strong in a 56-38 victory over the Tekonsha Indians in a Southern Central Athletic Association game Tuesday evening. Leading by three entering the fourth quarter, North Adams-Jerome (46, 2-4 SCAA) finally wore down the Indians with their press. Sparked by several transition baskets, the

The Chicago Bears will speak again with three candidates for their head-coaching job, ESPN.com reported Tuesday. The Bears are interviewing for a second time Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman and Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.

McQueary has sued the university for millions of dollars, claiming in an October complaint that thenpresident Graham Spanier made him a scapegoat in 2011 after Sandusky, a retired assistant football coach, was arrested on child molestation charges. ‘’It is not enough that the alleged victim of a statement be embarrassed or annoyed, he must have suffered the kind of harm which has grievously fractured his standing in the community of a respectable society,’’ wrote Penn State attorney Nancy

Rams outscored Tekonsha 19-4 in the final quarter to pull away with the win. “In the end we were quicker than them and were able to put more pressure on them defensively,” North Adams-Jerome coach Gary Beach said. Neither team could gain a big lead for most of the game. After an evenlyplayed first quarter, the Rams carried a 25-21 lead into halftime. Tekonsha matched baskets with the Rams in the third quarter and pulled to within 37-34 entering the fourth. Eric McCormick had 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals to

lead North Adams-Jerome. Alex Irish scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Chris Thomsen added 10 points and five assists. “Alex did a nice job stepping up for us tonight, and Keith Litwin gave us good support off the bench,” Beach said. Jarod Coney scored 16 points to lead Tekonsha. North Adams-Jerome will host a basketball triple-header against Burr Oak next Tuesday. The boys junior varsity game will take place at 4:30 p.m., with the girls game following that. The varsity boys will be the final game that day.

Union City 48, Reading 38 The Reading High School boys basketball team hung close with the Union City Chargers, but fell short in Tuesday’s Big Eight Conference game at home. Reading (3-6, 0-4 Big Eight) trailed by four after the first quarter and was down 24-16 at halftime. The Rangers fought back in the third quarter, pulling to within six entering the fourth. Union City (7-1, 4-0 Big Eight) finally pulled away in the closing three minutes to take the win. “We were in the game

the whole way, but in the last couple minutes they made a little run,” Reading coach Brett Kerspilo said. “We’ve had trouble scoring all year, and we need shots to fall. We’ve hit a rough stretch, but the guys played hard. We’re going to keep working hard and get better each day.” Cody Kafer and Brandon St. Clare both had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals to lead the Rangers. Kafer also handed out two assists. Casey Donihue added seven points. Emmitt Fraley recorded a triple-double for Union SEE PREP, B2
