791 Post Medieval Gold 1762 Quarter Guinea Love Token Dated 1762. A George III gold quarter guinea coin, twice bent for use as a love token. S. 3741 (coin). Gold, 2.07 grams, 15.20 mm. The giving of a ‘crooked’ coin as a token of love is well known from Elizabethan times until at least the 18th century and is referred to in the children’s nursery rhyme about the crooked man who finds a ‘crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile’. The use of silver sixpences, often very worn, for this was prevalent but a few examples, such as this one, are known using gold coins of the period.
792 Post Medieval Decorated Gold Mourning Ring 18th century AD. A gold D-section finger ring decorated on the outer surface with elaborate scrolled motifs; inscribed on the inner face ‘E. Fearne, obt. 17 Apr.1706 aet.41’ and a maker’s mark. See Oman, C.C. Victoria and Albert Museum Catalogue of Rings. 793 Post Medieval Gold, Crystal and Amethyst Mourning Ring 18th century AD. A gold finger ring with plain D-section hoop rising to discoid bezel; on the shoulders panels of fine scrollwork; on the face of the bezel a crystal plate enclosing a lock of hair within a ring of cut amethyst stones; on the reverse an inscription in a fine italic hand ‘Jas. Lugar ob.3 Dec 1772 æ 28’ Gold, crystal and amethyst, 3.47 grams, 22 mm overall (approximate size British N, USA 6 3/4, Europe 13.85, Japan 13). A gold finger ring with D-section hoop, decorated on the outer face with an ovoid panel and stylised foliage, some enamel remaining; inscribed within in a seriffed italic hand ‘Patiently submitt to dye’ followed by initals AL and maker’s mark. Gold, 3.70 grams, 22 mm overall (approximate size British S 1/2, USA 9 1/4, Europe 20.63, Japan 20). A heavy gold Roman style pendant with outer frame of openwork double-scroll elements enclosing a blue and white cameo depicting an erotic scene; on the reverse, a ribbed suspension loop.
