PHIL MCDANIEL * HEAD COACH * SECOND SEASON Phil McDaniel is in his second season guiding the Drake volleyball program after being named the 10th women’s volleyball coach at Drake University. McDaniel rekindled the Bulldog program in his initial campaign as Drake posted a 1220 mark. The 12 victories were deceiving on first glance as the win total was the highest for a Bulldog team since the 1998 unit captured 13 triumphs. It also marked the initial time any current member of the Drake team had won double-digit matches during their respective careers. On the court, sophomore Alana Wittenburg shattered the single-season record for digs with 603 to supplant Brandy Ossian (545-1995) atop the Drake list. Sophomore Angela Bys turned in 397 kills, the seventh-best singleseason mark in school history, while junior Chelsea Lauersdorf netted the 10th-best mark in assists with 1,003. Off the court, the team was named as one of the AVCA Team Academic Award winners, recording a 3.5 grade point average for the 2008-09 academic year and Bys was tabbed to the All-MVC Scholar-Athlete first team. An assistant coach at South Dakota State from 2005-2007, McDaniel helped the Jackrabbits claim the 2007 Summit League title as well as a berth in the NCAA Tournament. During his tenure in Brookings, S.D., he spearheaded recruiting efforts for the SDSU program, as well as monitoring academic progress for the Jackrabbits, who were honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) with its Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award in 2005 and 2006.
