Facelifts can address age-related changes to the face, such as excess skin on the lower jawline, the sagging appearance of the cheeks, deep skin folds running from the corner of the mouth to the sides of the nose, and excess fat and sagging skin in and on the neck. This type of surgery can’t treat sun damage, fine wrinkles, uneven skin colour or creases around the upper lip and nose.

WHAT DOES A FACELIFT INVOLVE?

A

flap of skin on each side of the face is pulled back during a facelift. Excess skin is removed, and tissues below the skin are altered to give a more youthful shape to the face. A neck lift is also often undertaken as part of a facelift, which reduces sagging skin and fat present in and on the neck.

Are There Any Risks Involved in Having a Facelift?

While facelift surgery can cause complications, those of the longterm or permanent variety are rare. Possible risks of the surgery include hematoma, scarring, nerve injury, hair loss and skin loss.

As with any type of surgery, facelifts carry the risk of infection and bleeding, as well as that of having a reaction to the anaesthetic. Certain lifestyle habits and medical conditions can also increase the chance of a complication occurring.

While facelift surgery can cause complications, those of the long-term or permanent variety are rare.
