One solution dedicated to different types of vehicles

We are pleased to inform that our offer now includes a new solution for drivers to make turning manoeuvres safer – the Turning Assistannt WUS AAS – 4.0 by WÜLLHORST.

In one of our latest issues, we wrote about a similar solution, which assists the driver while driving. We presented the new RightViu system by Continental. The system is still available in our offer. However, it should be stressed that the RightViu turning assistant is intended only for trucks, whereas the Wüllhorst system has much broader application. It is dedicated to trucks, agricultural machinery, special vehicles, such as fire engines, sweepers, and above all, to pu-blic transport buses and coaches. Wüllhorst system is based on components of our partner, Continental company, which contributed to establishing mutual cooperation between our company and Wüllhorst. We want to stress that Wüllhorst is a family company with long tradition in the automotive industry. The very fact that it was founded by Karl Wüllhorst in 1880 strongly appeals to the imagination. Currently, the company is run by the fourth generation of the Wüllhorst family. The range of products and services offered by the company is very wide. It is worth to mention about one of the firsts LBW vehicles, lightweight aluminium structures or cargo securing solutions. The company's latest innovations are driver assistance systems, such as the already mentioned turning assistant WUE AAS – 4.0. The system allows the drivers to reliably differentiate between static and dynamic objects, and immediately recognise them. The new system supports drivers when turning by providing a reliable warning signal indicating cyclists and pedestrians. The entire blind spot, opposite to the steering wheel side, is visible for a driver on a screen (left-hand and right -hand traffic versions are available). As the system complies with the UNECE 151 EU directive, the detection area has been further extended. It allows for safe detection of cyclists while crossing the road. Moreover, the system is not permanently active, but it activates after pressing the right turn indicator or while making a turn. As AAS-4.0 is equipped with a camera and a separate AHD monitor, the driver gets a clear picture of the hazardous situation. The viewing area of the camera overlaps with the detection field of the sensor, so that, whenever there is a warning, the driver can locate the obstacle and react to it. The system can also make the side-marker lights to flash when turning. This function will make the turning process considerably safer, since “weaker” road users will be made aware of the upcoming turn sooner. Application of Wüllhorst solution considerably reduces the psychological stress of the driver in traffic, which helps avoid driving errors.

System components

! Radar with camera

A radar sensor with special software from Continental is placed in a housing together with an AHD camera.

This minimises the installation effort, and the components are always perfectly aligned with each other. ll components are pre-assembled in the kit.

In the WUE AAS-4.0-Side version the camera monitoring system (KMS) is installed independently of the radar (optionally it can be integrated). ! Screen

The monitor is always placed in the driver's field of vision. Due to the position of the camera and the monitor, the blind spot is shown in the same perspective that the mirror also displays. This makes orientation very easy for the driver.

! ECU

The third system component is the control unit, in which everything comes together. The side-marker lights can also be connected here so that they also flash when indicating.

The WUE AAS – 4.0 turning assistant can be adapted to different vehicle specifications. Importantly, all possibilities are covered by one system – whether the steering wheel is placedon the left or right side, or whether we are talking about small vans, large trucks or vehicle combinations with a trailer detection function that automatically expands the warning field.

1. City buses and Coaches

WUE AAS – 4.0 assistant can be easily installed on public transport buses. In comparison with RightViu (that is mounted underneath the mirror and in case of public transport buses, may endanger the health of pedestrians) the mounting position is fully safe to the environment, and the radar sensor is installed on the side.

2. Special vehicles

As the sensor always has the same mounting position and a defined monitoring area, the system can be used in all types of vehicles of municipal services, including very short ones.

3. Trucks

With many years of experience in vehicle construction Wüllhorst has reviewed and tested the perfect mounting scenario for retrofitting the vehicle with turning assistants and its implementation into series production. In addition, cooperation in this area with Continental, a manufacturer of RightViu system offers proven hardware and specialist knowledge on the software.

4. Agricultural machinery

When it comes to agricultural machinery, there is a solution covering both sides of a tractor or other agricultural machine. Since the steering wheel in such vehicles is usually placed in the centre, a blind spot occurs on both sides, next to the rear wheels. There can be one sensor system on each side. Both of them can be operated via one control unit.
