Endowment Gift at Work

The life of the mind, from one generation to another “People like John Baughman are heroes,” declares David N. Gellman, associate professor of history, “because they choose to dedicate their whole career to the institution and its students.” Gellman is the current recipient of the John J. and Elizabeth Bowden Baughman Faculty Fellowship provided by Robert C. Canfield ’60 and Patricia Harms Canfield ’57. Baughman, a 1948 DePauw graduate, is professor emeritus of history, having taught actively at DePauw from 1953 through 1990. Gellman states that it has been an honor to hold a faculty fellowship named after a scholar he knows and admires. “The life of the mind is a continuum,” he says, “from one’s professional life into retirement. John Baughman proves that.” Gellman’s faculty fellowship is supporting research into the family of John Jay, America’s first Supreme Court chief justice. America’s challenges and opportunities touch generations of the Jay family throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. “It’s a story of transformation and tradition,” Gellman explains. Gellman enjoys the freedom to conduct and teach historical research in new areas at DePauw, and especially the opportunities provided by faculty development funds such as this one. “Some people do sudokus to keep them fresh. For us, its reading and writing.” Jennifer R. Wood Elisabeth Work Dawn Cornell Yeager Gregory Lewis Yoakam Doug Young Janet Younger Alison Yurko Daniel Zabrowski Marguerite Carroll Zelenz Gary C.
