Endowment Gift at Work

Rediscovering a revolutionary 18th century woman writer through a faculty fellowship Brussels-born writer Cornélie Wouters was a woman who defied convention and still defies description. “She was a proto- lots of things,” jokes Associate Professor of Modern Languages (French) and 1993 DePauw graduate Carrie F. Klaus. Klaus journeyed to Belgium during a sabbatical last year to learn more about this fascinating figure. With support from the Dean and Martha Dunlavy Mitchell ’51, ’52 Faculty Fellowship Fund, she is continuing her research on Wouters, as well as other writers of that era. Writing in Paris during the later 1700s, Wouters left behind an allegorical text about the American Revolution, a science fiction work about a trip to the moon, and even a letter to the French National Assembly, boldly arguing that Jews should be admitted as citizens. If all that weren’t enough, she produced translations of contemporary texts as well. History has forgotten many European female writers of the pre-revolutionary period, Klaus contends, excluding them from the compendiums that pass along “major writings” from one generation to another. The result is a pre-conceived notion that women writers in 18th century Europe were rare and certainly almost never published. Not so, Klaus explains. Women had a definitive place in 18th century literature, and thus in the intellectual life of the times. In resurrecting our memories of such women as Wouters, Klaus hopes to help her students see the entire era anew.
