Carrying on a tradition: teaching organ at DePauw Carla G. Edwards has an unusual object in her office for a professor – a pipe organ. For Edwards – professor of music, University organist and associate dean for the School of Music – it is a vital part of her life and work. Carrying on a long and proud tradition of organ education at DePauw, Edwards takes great pride in her work and in her students. Edwards, who holds the Cassel Grubb University Professorship, endowed by Gary P. Drew ’61 and Sandra Aldrich Drew ’62, arrived at DePauw in 1988. Her crowning achievement during this two-decade tenure has been helping to bring the J. Stanford Smith Concert Organ to campus. Built through a gift from the family of former Rector Scholar J. Stanford Smith ’36, the organ is a world-class instrument, and Edwards participated in its arrival on campus from beginning to end. She took an active part in the planning committee, visited the workshop near Montreal where the organ was being constructed in painstaking detail, and oversaw its installation in Kresge Auditorium day in and day out until its dedication in 2003. More than an attractive console on the Kresge stage, the Smith Organ is a complex labyrinth of billows, frameworks and pipes, lovingly built by master craftsmen. The art and craft of making such an organ create beautiful music is being taught with just as much care and dedication by Edwards, ensuring that an important tradition lives on. William J.
