Class Notes James A. Harvey was named the interim superintendent of the Monroe County (Ind.) Community School Corporation. Jim served as interim superintendent once before in 1994-95 for Monroe County and was Bloomfield School District superintendent in 1999-2001. He retired in 1997 as a Monroe County teacher and administrator after three decades of service. Robert D. McClure is the inaugural Chapple Family Professor of Citizenship and Democracy in the political science department of the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. Robert joined the Syracuse University faculty in 1969.

Anderson, Pamela Blake Peters, Beth Hunter Dalton, Elizabeth Weidman Zuercher, Carolyn Schrank Mugge, Margaret McGleish Muse, Donna Walker Hawk, Sherry Bockstanz Hughes, Frederica Sheridan White, Pamela Lott Paige, Cynthia Batts Summers and Bonnie Stout Lloyd. Elizabeth Mead Safanda is the executive director of Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley in Kane County, Ill. Preservation Partners provide preservation resources to people in the community.

1964

The 1960 Delta Gamma pledge class met in Chicago in summer 2006 and enjoyed a wonderful time renewing friendships and enjoying the sights and entertainment of the city. (See photo, bottom previous page.) Carol Parks Morrison is the author of Presbyterian Pioneers, a history of two small churches in the Midwest united by history and tradition. Carol spent 16 years writing the history of the churches, covering the years 1843-2006. She lives in Attica, Ind.

1967

R. David Hoover received the University of Denver’s International Bridge Builders Award, Aug. 15, 2006. Presented by the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver, the award recognizes the personal contributions of the school’s alumni, staff, faculty and friends for enhancing the connection between Denver and the international community. David is chairman and chief executive officer of Ball Corporation in Broomfield, Colo., as well as a trustee of DePauw University.

1965

Dr. Fred J. and Susan Ferry Bartizal’s son, Peter, was married in their home in Neenah, Wis., during the summer 2006. DePauw alumni attending the wedding included David B. Bills ’64, Beryl Bobinette Bills and James Menighan ’63. Fred retired May 1, 2006, after 30 years as an OB-GYN physician. David L. Casey retired as superintendent of Buchanan Community Schools in Buchanan, Mich., in June 2006, after 13 years of service.

J. Randall Reifers took part in the 2006 U.S. Senior Open in Kansas and tied for 47th place. Randy was the only amateur to qualify for the final games of the event. He is a member of the DePauw Athletic Hall of Fame, inducted in 1997. Stephen W. Sanger was one of the corporate CEOs who spoke at the 98th annual meeting of the National Governor’s Association. He and other corporation leaders are offering Americans healthier choices of food to improve their health and fight the growing problem of obesity. Steve is chairman and CEO of General Mills. J. Stuart Showalter retired from a career of advising healthcare organizations and is living

Cassel Grubb, professor emeritus of music at DePauw, was recognized by the Interlochen Center for the Arts for his excellence in teaching from 1963-2004. A professor emeritus of music, Cassel taught cello and directed the chamber music program at the Interlochen Arts Camp. The arts center established the Cassel Grubb Endowed Scholarship in his honor to support young talented cellists who seek to attend the Interlochen Arts Camp. The endowed scholarship was announced at a ceremony prior to the final concert of the 2006 season by the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. Sandra Aldrich Drew ’62 and K. Blake Schlabach ’84 were participants in the ceremony.

Cheryl Slagell Kinsinger retired June 1, 2006, as a marketing associate in the global marketing talent division of Caterpillar Inc., in Peoria, Ill. Since her retirement, she has been active as an ambassador for the Autism Tissue Cheryl Slagell Kinsinger ’68 Program, speaking to parent groups throughout the Midwest. She helped to coordinate the Chicago Area Walk for Autism Research, October 2006, in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago. Her e-mail address is ckinsinger@insightbb.com. (See photo, above.) Douglas A. Smith gave the McDermond Center Lecture, Sept. 28, 2006, at DePauw. He is the chief executive officer and founder of Best Brands Corporation in Columbus, Ohio. Doug is a member of the DePauw Management Center Board of Advisors. Rudy H. Volkmann won the bronze medal in the 60+ sabre category at the Veteran Fencing World Championships in Bath, England, Sept. 1, 2006. He taught fencing classes at DePauw while working on his master’s degree. Two of his works for saxophone ensemble were premiered by the Bohemia Sax Quartet in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2006. Michael L. Smith is serving a four-year term on the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Mike retired as executive vice president and chief financial officer of WellPoint, Inc. He is a member of DePauw’s Board of Trustees and was elected to the board of directors of Vectren Corporation in February 2006.

1971

Paul J. Blasdel is co-creator and a principal in Stego Industries in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. The company sells a waterproofing material developed by Paul for use in the construction of buildings. Stego Industries employs a group of DePauw alumni, including R. Page Cotton ’05, St. Louis regional manager; Mark A. Prosser ’05, San Juan Capistrano regional manager; and Bryce A. Skeeters ’04, Chicago regional manager. Scott S. Brinkmeyer was recognized in the 2007 edition of Best Lawyers in America. He is an attorney and partner with Mika Meyers Beckett & Jones PLC law firm in Grand Rapids, Mich. The 1971 Delta Zeta class enjoyed a mini-35th reunion in Frisco, Colo., July 21-24, 2006.
