About the Art Park Players

In early 1979, a small group of Deer Park residents, led by Jeff Smith and Jean Riggs, met at the Deer Park Community Center to begin a script-reading club. After several weeks went by, and the number of people attending grew, this hardworking and talented group decided it was time to put on a show. Later that year they staged their very first production, Once Upon a Mattress at Deer Park High School’s Gaines Mason Auditorium. These theater lovers continued their recruitment efforts and soon the “Not-Yet-Named Theatre Company” sprang to life, offering their first season of shows. The City of Deer Park recognized the love for the theatrical arts in our community and was fortunate to hire Sue Fenley-Meyers as the full time artistic and managing director. And the “Not-Yet-Named Theatre Company” became the Art Park Players.

PRESENT DAY

It has been a long, but exciting journey from our humble beginnings back in Room 6 at the community center to the lovely theater facility the City of Deer Park afforded us in December of 1986. In April, 2004, Susan Mele, longtime theater performer, junior Art Park Player director and volunteer, took over the reins upon Sue’s retirement. Susan has been with the theater company since 1981.

YOUTH THEATRE SCHOOL

The course of instruction encompasses virtually every aspect of theatre: acting, enunciation, vocal performance, development of creative imagination, stage direction, facial and vocal expression, choreography, vocal projection, body language, team work, active listening skills, theatre discipline and etiquette, technical theatre, commercial training, public speaking and modeling.

GROWING NUMBERS

Our youth theater school began with six students, and now has more than 250 eager young minds. These students gain self-confidence and grow their creativity through participation in a myriad of activities, such as: acting, singing, and dancing.

Creative Canopies: Parks & Greenspaces

The Transformative Power of Art in Outdoor Spaces

IIn recent times, there has been a notable increase in the integration of art in outdoor spaces, particularly in parks. This trend has benefits beyond aesthetics, such as promoting creativity, encouraging community participation, and enhancing overall well-being. Examples of such art installations include interactive installations and murals driven by the community.

Art installations in parks transform spaces into cultural hubs, attracting visitors and encouraging exploration. Interacting with installations in natural settings creates a deeper appreciation for nature and creativity, enhancing the overall experience.

Outdoor art has a significance beyond its visual appeal. It can act as a catalyst to encourage social interaction and strengthen community cohesion. Collaborative projects and public art events unite people from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging and pride.

As communities appreciate and contribute to art in local parks, they become stronger and more unified. Engaging with art is not just a leisure activity; it’s a therapeutic escape. Studies have consistently shown

that exposure to both art and nature can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while promoting relaxation and overall mental well-being. The beauty of a park adorned with sculptures, paintings, or interactive installations is a gift we can all enjoy, enhancing our daily lives.

Art can inspire creativity and imagination among park visitors, particularly children. It promotes critical thinking, encourages new ideas, and provides a means for self-expression through hands-on workshops or by observing visual art. Interacting with art in public parks helps individuals develop their creative potential and better understand artistic concepts.

Parks & Greenspaces

Thirty-one years have flown by faster than I could have ever imagined. As I reflect on my career over the years, a few moments stick out to me over the others. The first was the first-ever Snow in the Park at Dow Park, where the line was so long, it passed the funeral home entrance on San Augustine. We have come a long way since that phenomenal time. On any given day, I loved to walk around Dow Park and see numerous families and visitors enjoying our park. Most importantly, I loved knowing that I had a part to play in all of the enjoyment our community has to offer. It means a lot to me to see our goals come to fruition. I also reflect on the difficult times where our community had to overcome some challenging scenarios. A memory that comes to mind is during the flooding of Tropical Storm Allison; City staff members and I went on a rescue mission to help a citizen with a physical disability to find safer ground from his house. Without hesitation, we loaded up on a bus with a lift and helped him to ensure he was safe from the rising waters. Which in turn, leads me to memories of the countless staff I have had the privilege to work alongside.

I must express how thankful I am to all staff (full-time, parttime, and temporary) for their exemplary efforts in providing our community with quality buildings, parks, events, and customer service. Your work for Deer Park is more important than you may realize. I must also express my gratitude to City Council, Parks and Recreation Commission, and our administration. Thank you for your support, your guidance, and for adding the oil to our machines so we can keep all the gears turning in our department.

All of these amazing years have come and gone. However, as I look to end my career, I can’t help but reflect on my last year. 2023 has been a wild and exciting year, and definitely one for the books. It was a year full of destruction, perseverance, deconstruction, and opportunity. 2023 began with devastating damage caused to our community by a tornado. However, true to form our community and staff remained steadfast, helpful, and hopeful through all the work. From clearing debris to removing downed trees, our teams (especially our parks team) did works of wonder to help our community get back on their feet. I thank you each day for working tirelessly to make sure our community was back to normal in no time.

The year then saw the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. We celebrated the last days of the Deer Park Community Center and ushered in the beginning of a new center which will offer new opportunities for years to come. I am excited to have been a part of planning the future community center. Like many others in our community, I was sad to see the previous building go. However, the future building will be spectacular and rocket our department towards greater success and programming for the community. I can't wait to visit and stand alongside our community in the summer of 2025 to see its completion.

Finally, 2023 saw an influx of so many new programming opportunities for the Deer Park community. The introduction of Día de Los Muertos – Deer Park Parks and Recreation's first cultural event, countless senior services opportunities, new athletic offerings, inclusive aquatics, and a higher focus on teens and recreation programs. We already knew how important these programs would be to our community, and I am incredibly proud of the team that put them together.

It warms my heart to have been in a position to serve my community in more ways than one. Our staff is incredible, and I am blessed to know them, to work with them throughout the years, and to plan and be a part of our future despite my retirement. I am excited to see where the Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department heads. You all will do amazing things, and I can't wait to cheer you on. I thank God, my Lord, and Savior, for my many blessings here in Deer Park.

WIER PROJECT—GOLF COURSE

The City’s commitment to the community will transform Deer Park’s Battleground Golf Course! We’re embarking on an exhilarating venture: demolishing the old and constructing a brand-new Dam/Weir that will be a testament to engineering excellence. We aim to redefine innovation and design standards in partnership with Arceneaux, Wilson, and Cole. Here’s what’s on the horizon:

• April 3, 2024: It’s time to open the floodgates to bids from the brightest minds in the industry.

• April 16, 2024: Join us at the City Council Meeting as we proudly award the bid. Our excitement builds as we prepare for this groundbreaking project’s launch in the summer of 2024. Keep an eye on our updates as we embark on this exciting journey to enhance the Battleground Golf Course!
