The Worship of the King April 1, 2012 Palm Sunday Welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus! If you are a guest with us, please be sure to sign our Welcome Pads when they are passed around before the service. Children are welcome in our worship. We have a nursery available for children 3 and under. Children 4 to 6 years of age may be dismissed to Godly Play prior to the sermon. Thank you for joining us today and may the Lord richly bless you.

Song of Assembly1 Lead On, O King Eternal

Shurtleff

Lead on, O King eternal, the day of march has come; Henceforth in fields of conquest, thy tents shall be our home. Through days of preparation, thy grace has made us strong; And now, O King eternal, we lift our battle song. Lead on, O King eternal, till sin’s fierce war shall cease, And holiness shall whisper, the sweet amen of peace. For not with swords loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums; With deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes. So lead on, O King, Lead on, O King, Lead on, O King, Lead on. Lead on, O King eternal, we follow, not with fears, For gladness breaks like morning where’er thy face appears. Thy cross is lifted o’er us, we journey in its light; The crown awaits the conquest; lead on, O God of might.

Welcome and Preparation for Worship “Then he isn’t safe?” said Lucy. “Safe?” said Mr. Beaver. “Don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe! But he’s good. He’s the king, I tell you.” ~C.S. Lewis, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. ~The Gospel of John 1

Palm Processional The King of Glory Comes

Jabusch

The King of glory comes, the nation rejoices. Open the gates before him, lift up your voices. Who is the King of glory? What shall we call him? He is Immanuel, the promised of ages. In all of Galilee, in city or village, He goes among his people, curing their illness. He gave his life for us, the pledge of salvation. He took upon himself the sin of the nations. He conquered sin and death; he truly has risen. And he will share with us his heavenly kingdom.

THE KING SUMMONS HIS PEOPLE Call to Worship2

Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:7-11

Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.... They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Prayer of Adoration & Praise

Based on Psalm 118

Hymn of Praise O Worship the King

Grant

O worship the King all glorious above, O gratefully sing His pow’r and His love; Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. O tell of His might, O sing of His grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is His path on the wings of the storm. All hail to the King in splendor enthroned; glad praises we bring, thy wonders make known. Returning victorious, great conqueror of sin, King Jesus, all glorious, our vict’ry will win.

Song 2

Here Comes the King

Kids of the King

We believe that God always initiates with sinners, so we begin worship with his invitation and command to us to gather in His name.

THE KING FORGIVES HIS PEOPLE Call to Confession

from the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6

Your kingdom come, your will be done... forgive us our debts... deliver us from evil.

We Repent O Almighty God, Heavenly Father, I have sinned against you and against my neighbor in thought, word, and deed, in the evil I have done and in the good I have not done, through ignorance, through weakness, and through my own deliberate fault. I am truly sorry and repent of all my sins. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, who died for me, forgive me all that is past; and grant that I may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your Name. ...Silent & Personalized Confession of Sin... Amen!

The Promise and Character of God

Isaiah 43:25; Psalm 86:5

“I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” .... For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

Worship with Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Hosanna

Baloche

Praise is rising, eyes are turning to You, we turn to You Hope is stirring, hearts are yearning for You, we long for You ’Cause when we see You, we find strength to face the day In Your Presence all our fears are washed away, washed away Hosanna, hosanna You are the God Who saves us, worthy of all our praises Hosanna, hosanna Come have Your way among us, we welcome You here, Lord Jesus Hear the sound of hearts returning to You, we turn to You In Your Kingdom broken lives are made new, You make us new ’Cause when we see You, we find strength to face the day In Your Presence all our fears are washed away, washed away Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna

Lo, He Comes Every eye shall now behold Him, robed in dreadful majesty. Those who set at naught and sold Him, pierced and nailed Him to the tree. Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. Lo! He comes with clouds descending, once for our salvation slain. Thousand, thousand saints attending, swell the triumph of His train. Alleluia! Alleluia! God appears on earth to reign. 3

Wesley

Lo! He comes in glory shining, saints arise and meet your King. Glorious captain of salvation, “welcome, welcome” hear them sing. Shouts of triumph, Shouts of triumph, make the heav’ns with echoes ring. Yea amen let all adore Thee, high on thine eternal throne. Savior take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own. O Come quickly, O come quickly, alleluia, come Lord, come!

Solemn Vows (PCA Book of Church Order §57-5)

Elder Mike McMahan

Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinners in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope except through His sovereign mercy? Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered in the Gospel? Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes followers of Christ? Do you promise to support the Church in its worship and work to the best of your abilities? Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the Church, and promise to study its purity and peace?

Prayer for the Landau Family

Elder Stuart Smith

THE KING FEEDS HIS PEOPLE The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper Communion, also called The Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all committed followers of Jesus Christ to share in this sacrament: those who are baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the gospel, who are at peace with God and their neighbor, and who seek strength to live in a deeper communion with Jesus. If you are not a Christian, or you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the Church.

Behold the Lamb Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us: and we remember The promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this Bread of Life, and we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of peace around the table of the King. The body of our Savior, Jesus Christ, torn for you: eat and remember The wounds that heal, the death that brings us life, paid the price to make us one. So we share in this Bread of Life, and we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of love around the table of the King.

The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you: drink and remember He drained death’s cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God. So we share in this Bread of Life, and we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of grace around the table of the King. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond: and to remember. Our call to follow in the steps of Christ as His body here on earth. As we share in His suffering, we proclaim: Christ will come again! And we’ll join in the feast of heaven around the table of the King.

THE KING BLESSES HIS PEOPLE Benediction4

Revelation 19:11-13; Philippians 4:7

May he who rides a white horse, who is called Faithful and True, whose eyes are like a blazing fire, and upon whose head are many crowns; who is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and whose name is the Word of God — may he keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus with the peace of God that transcends all understanding.

They relocated to Decatur when Brent accepted a position of engineering manager with a local robotics integrator, Global Systems, LLC. Chelsea and Brent are from Edwardsville, IL (near St. Louis MO). They met in high school and were married in 1999 after graduating from college. God has blessed them with three children, Preston (9), Drake (7), and Garrett (4). Chelsea is a “domestic engineer” i.e. stay at home mom. She homeschools Preston and Drake, while Garrett attends preschool. Brent and the boys enjoy trains and anything that shoots or runs on diesel fuel. Chelsea has been labeled a “militant couponer” for demonstrating her superior skills in clipping and strategically using coupons. The Landaus are adjusting well to Decatur despite the high pollen counts and their ignorance of college football. They look forward to worshiping with their new family at DPC! Just as God called us into His presence at the beginning, so now He commands His blessing upon us as we depart. We look up and extend our hands in a posture of thanksgiving as we receive this great gift. Our final response to God’s assurance of His peace and presence upon those who are in Christ is a chorus of joyful song. 4
