A Century of Style & Service
The Legacy of The New Hub Store and its Next Chapter
By Hannah Beard | Marketing & Merchant Engagement Manager
For over a century, 51 S. George Street has been home to a staple of York’s retail community. What began as a work uniform store under the ownership of Ruthie and Harold Smotkins has transformed into The New Hub Store, a well-known destination for eclectic dress wear, thanks to its dedicated owner, Willie Standley. Now, after 31 years at the helm, Willie is preparing to pass the torch to his son, Jabarri Brown, ensuring that the store’s rich legacy continues for generations to come.
Willie, a lifelong York resident, took over the store after working there for years. When he became the owner, he rebranded it as The New Hub Store, reflecting his vision for the business while honoring its past. “The business itself is 103 years old this year,” he shares with pride. “It started as a family business, focused on work clothes and jeans, or ‘dungarees’ as they called them back in the day. But I wanted to adapt to the demand—casual wear is everywhere, but you don’t just walk into any store and find a great suit. You have to go to a place that specializes in it.”

That specialization has become The New Hub Store’s hallmark. The shop offers a wide range of suits, dress pants, and dress suits, standing out with their vibrant colors and unique styles. “We pride ourselves on excellent service, served with personality, a smile, love, and respect,” Willie says.
As Willie gradually transitions ownership to Jabarri, he is confident that his son will uphold the store’s reputation for quality and care. Jabarri, who has learned the art of shoe repair from a local specialist with 60 years of experience, restores footwear with skill and dedication. He also assists with alterations, a service that Willie has mastered over the years. Together, they ensure that customers can have their suits and dresses tailored to perfection—sometimes even on the same day.
As the store’s most popular item, suits, continue to define its success. While The New Hub Store also carries select women’s outfits, its true strength lies in its ability to outfit men in sharp, stylish attire for any occasion. Willie acknowledges the foundation laid by Ruthie and Harold Smotkins, expressing his gratitude for the path they paved. “I owe them a debt of gratitude and thanks.”

As he nears the transition of ownership, Willie remains immensely grateful to the community that has supported him for more than three decades. “I want to thank York. The people here have been good to me and have supported me all these years. I hope the community continues to support my son as he takes over.”
With Jabarri stepping up to lead The New Hub Store into the future, its legacy of quality service, style, and community connection will remain firmly in place. York’s history is woven into the fabric of the store—just as each tailored suit carries the mark of dedication and craftsmanship. Here’s to the next chapter of The New Hub Store, where tradition meets transformation, and every customer leaves looking their best.
