The highest bid live auction item ($15,000) was a one day, round trip for eight in a private Hawker 800 to New York City with $2,000 cash to spend. That should be a memory-producing and fun whirlwind. The live auction ($95,000 net) and silent auction, including the popular student-created class baskets ($42,000 net), together with ticket sales and generous sponsors, netted approximately $200,000 for the school, which is noted for its rigorous academics and athletics. OPEN - Art Exhibition Cranbrook Academy of Art has been staging graduate degree exhibitions since the 1930s, but the 2012 exhibition was the first to be unveiled at a major fundraising event – OPEN. The Friday night champagne reception and art viewing followed by dinner in a festival tent attracted 300plus at $450 for benefactors and $250 for patrons. They were joined by the 79 new master degree holders and the artists-in-residence that head up the 10 disciplines. Mercedes Benz Financial Services was the signature sponsor of the event designed to fund scholarships at the graduate school of art. The following evening, more than 800 trekked to the museum for the Artmembers’ reception. Sunday afternoon, more than 900 people, including lots of youngsters, came for the OPEN Studios event. They toured the students’ actual work spaces, bought some of the students’ work, and created some of their own at make and take stations. Tapper’s of Detroit Wine Auction Why not celebrate the College for Creative Studies’ 31st Detroit International Wine Auction six months in advance? CCS alum Steven Tapper and his family of jewelers and CCS trustee Somerset Collection’s Nate Forbes hosted an artful cocktail party for that purpose at Tapper’s Somerset North store. It was a splendid excuse to sip wine from the auction’s honorary vintner, Spain’s Numanthia Estate (Termes), as well as from the 2011 honorary vintner, Celani Family Vineyards (Tenaious), and to ogle both CSS graduates’ art on display and some fabulous jewels like a 19.1 ct intense yellow flawless diamond. Beyond Basics Red Carpet Event About 230 people, including the principals from the four Detroit schools in which Beyond Basics conducts reading, writing and horizonexpanding enrichment programs, attended BB’s 10th anniversary celebration at The Henry Ford’s Lovett Hall.
