CCTV cameras: Yes or No? DOWNEND could have CCTV cameras as soon as the autumn in an effort to crack down on crime and anti-social behaviour. The stretch along Badminton Road is one of the few town centres in South Gloucestershire

without surveillance cameras. But increases in crime have led to calls for the area to be covered by cameras to reassure members of the public and help police track down criminals. Now South Gloucestershire

Council wants to hear from residents and traders about plans to install cameras in three key locations. The plans have so far been welcomed by the community, Turn to Page 2

Council seeks views

From Page 1 with one victim of a sexual assault coming forward to tell Downend Voice if there had been cameras at the time of her attack it may have led to a successful prosecution. Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council have been pushing for CCTV for several years and have agreed to pay £30,000 for the cameras, which will be able to tilt, pan and zoom. Ongoing monitoring costs, estimated to be around £10,000 a year, will be paid for by South Gloucestershire Council. A report issued by South Glos as part of a consultation exercise shows crime figures for the area over the past three years. Although criminal damage and arson have dropped, public order offences and shoplifting have increased.

And violence and sexual offences have doubled from 11 reported incidents in 2017 to 22 in 2019. Downend Voice announced the news of the consultation on its Facebook page, with many people responding that they were in favour of the scheme. “Brilliant. The more (cameras) the better, although it's a shame that it's necessary in these lawless times,” one person commented. Another said: “It's a good thing...if you're doing nothing wrong a camera will not bother you.” One person who suggested CCTV would be put to better use in a higher crime area was quickly shot down with the comment: “I'd rather it didn't get to the point of a high crime area ... I'm all for CCTV, keep the area safe!” One woman told the Voice that she had been a victim of

Have a say on parking curbs NEW sets of double-yellow lines are set to be introduced on several roads in Downend. South Gloucestershire Council has held a short public consultation on the changes, most of which are aimed at banning parking on junctions and corners. The consultation was only announced on February 3, after the February edition of the Voice was published, and was due to close on February 24. It also includes plans for a new dedicated disabled parking bay in the spaces outside Cleeve Wood Road shops. Roads where double-yellow lines are set to be introduced on junctions and corners include: • Amberley Close, Cleeve Gardens and Clevedale; • Overndale Road at the corner with Cleeve Hill; • Oakdale Avenue at its junctions with Heath Road, Oakdale Court and Oakdale Road; • Sandringham Avenue at the junction with Badminton Road; Boscombe Crescent at its junctions with Westbourne Road and Meadow Close; • the junctions of Cleeve Avenue, Cleeve Park Road and Oakdale Road with Badminton Road; • Farm Court; • the junctions of Cleeve Park Road and Cave Close with Cleeve Hill; the junctions of Farm Road and Badminton Road with Cleeve Lodge Road; • parts of Cleeve Lodge Close. Double yellows on Westerleigh Road near junction with Graham Road will be extended. The consultation was being hosted on the consultations section of South Gloucestershire Council’s website. Telephone enquiries on the plans can be made by calling 01454 868004. The council is also planning to add 2m-wide green cycle lane markings to Bromley Heath Road northbound from the junction with Cleeve Hill and Cleevewood Road.

on CCTV cameras for Downend high street a sexual assault in Badminton Road but the case never got to court due to a lack of evidence. “It ended up not going to court as it was my word against his and there was no CCTV evidence,” she said. “If CCTV had been there, the man who sexually assaulted me night have been prosecuted.” The council has suggested locations for the cameras – near the Horseshoe pub; by the roundabout where Downend Road and North Street meet; and near the corner of Badminton Road and Cleeve Road, by Lloyds Bank. The consultation survey is asking people for their views on the locations and anyone who feels that they are not in the optimum places is being asked to propose other spots. The report said: “Based on the evidence presented to date, Downend high street (Badminton Road) has seen

main high streets without CCTV, which is of course vital to record any instances of crime. CCTV will undoubtedly bring many benefits to our community, ensuring public safety and protection, whilst reducing the risk of anti-social behaviour and hazardous driving. “Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council has agreed to financially support this project, with South Gloucestershire Council settling the ongoing costs of any monitoring, maintenance and repairs. “We do hope that the community will come together in support of this proposal to ensure that Downend remains a safe and pleasant environment for its residents, businesses and visitors.” The public consultation is open until March 27, 2020. To take part visit https:// consultations.southglos.gov.uk/ consult.ti/Downend_CCTV

One of the three cameras would be by the mini roundabout at the junction of North Street and Downend Road an increase in offences on and around the high street, providing the basis for the installation of a CCTV system in Downend in order to assist the police and council in their statutory responsibilities in the prevention and detection of crime and disorder.” The images from each camera would be transmitted to Bristol Operations Centre to be monitored, the report said. Hanham, Kingswood, Staple Hill, Thornbury, Filton, Chipping Sodbury and Cadbury Heath are

all part of a Community Safety CCTV Network monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If results of the consultation show there is a demand for the cameras, Downend would join this network. Parish council chair Councillor Janet Biggin said: “A couple of years ago, Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council approached South Gloucestershire Council to explore whether CCTV would be a viable option in Downend. “Downend is one of the few

Ministerial changes

CHRIS Skidmore has said he has been promoted “to be a better dad” after being sacked from the Government. The Kingswood MP’s former job as Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation was abolished in Boris Johnson’s reshuffle, with the brief being split into two roles. The Voice asked Mr Skidmore to comment. He has not replied but has wished his successors – Michelle Donelan and Amanda Solloway – good luck on Twitter, where he also published pictures of himself enjoying time with his children. The biggest shock of the reshuffle was the departure of Chancellor Sajid Javid, who quit after being given the choice of sacking his team of advisers or resigning. Mr Javid, 50, grew up in Bristol and in the early 80s attended Stockwell Hill Comprehensive School, which became Downend School in 1982.

n NEWS COUNCIL tax payers will see the average overall bill rise by £70 to top £1,900 in Downend this year. South Gloucestershire Council has agreed a £232 million revenue budget, which will see the cost of the authority’s services rise by 3.99 per cent to £1,543.37 for a median Band D tax payer, up £59.22 from £1,484.15 last year. Just over half of the increase is a precept to be spent exclusively on meeting the growing cost to the authority of adult social care services. Downend residents also pay for the services of Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council: its £304,500 budget is unchanged and the £66.20 precept charge for Band D residents is slightly lower than last year, due to an increase in the number of households paying council tax. In addition a charge for “special expenses” – £16.97 for Band D tax payers – is added to bills for services the council makes which are specific to the Downend area.

Average Downend council tax bill will top £1,900 People living in areas with no parish council, including most of Staple Hill and Mangotsfield, face a special expenses charge of £30.61 for Band D tax payers, which is down from £31.02. Emersons Green Town Council had not set its precept as the Voice went to print but the charge for its services was expected to be the same as last year at £39.40, plus £17.80 special expenses, for Band D taxpayers. The bill for policing services will rise by £10 per Band D household this year, from £217.81 to £227.81 – a rise of 4.59% - while Avon Fire Authority has increased its precept by 1.99% to £74.94 for

Band D tax payers. The overall Band D bill in Downend will be £1,908.69, up £70.40 on last year, while in Mangotsfield and Staple Hill it will be £1,856.13,and in Emersons Green it will be £1,882.72. Bills vary according to the size of property: in Downend this ranges from £1,272.45 for Band A to £3,817.38 for Band H. As well as spending on services and day-to-day operations the council plans £145m in capital spending on roads and building projects, while a further £219m will be spent on council-run schools, up by £11.4m. Council leader Toby Savage said the budget would deliver “the best possible value for money, while also taking action to respond to the climate emergency and improve our local environment”.

He added: “We have been able to increase spending in some key areas this year, including on schools.” Labour group leader Pat Rooney said accused the council of failing residents in three key areas: schools, metrobus, and the Joint Spatial Plan. She said: “The Conservatives have been in control of South Glos for the past 10 years and our secondary schools are still at the bottom of the national league tables. Parents see little or no improvements, and we are still suffering from a cash starved schools budget.” Liberal Democrat leader Claire Young said two amendments to the budget, over protecting “environmentally valuable land” from sale and supporting men and LGBT victims of domestic abuse had been accepted. But she added: “We are disappointed that the Conservatives declined to accept our perfectly reasonable amendment that, in light of reports that the Chancellor has asked for Government departments to look for 5% cuts, the council should write to the Government asking for local government funding to be put on a sustainable long-term footing.”

Cars sprayed with paint POLICE are hunting a man after two cars were vandalised in Downend. The incident happened between 11.55pm on January 20 and 12.15am on January 21 in Bromley Heath Road. The suspect who was wearing a disposable hooded coverall, which is used for decorating - sprayed paint on two vehicles parked in the driveway and on the house. The damaged cars are a red Jaguar and a white Renault. Police are investigating the incident as criminal damage. Anyone with information should contact police quoting reference 5220015755.

Landlord fined over ‘dangerous’ flat A LANDLORD has been ordered to pay more than £2,500 in fines and costs after a flat he rented to a young family was found to have a catalogue of problems, including “dangerous modifications to the electrics”. Liaqat Sher Ali was prosecuted by South Gloucestershire Council for failing to comply with an improvement notice relating to the first floor flat he rented out in Downend’s main shopping area on Badminton Road. The council said its Private Sector Housing team was first alerted to the property above Ali’s dry cleaning business in 2018, when a colleague noticed the poor condition of the external metal steps at the rear of the flat, which was being rented to a couple and their two children. A council spokesman said: “An inspection...found a number of defects including a lack of fixed heating (with portable heaters in use), no

smoke detectors, dangerous modifications to the electrics, poorly constructed and unguarded steps at the rear, a badly fitted external door to the bathroom and cracked, single glazed windows. “It was also established that the landlord was expecting the tenants to use the rear entrance at the top of the metal steps, which opens directly into the bathroom, as the main entrance into the flat.”

Liaqat Sher Ali was prosecuted over the condition of the flat he rented out above a dry cleaning business in Downend The spokesman said Ali did not want his tenants using the flat’s front door on to the high street as “he did not want customers of their dry cleaning business to see them coming and going”. A health and safety assessment found “hazards relating to excess cold, structural collapse and falling elements, and falling between levels,” as well as fire and electrical risks. The council served an

improvement notice but Ali did not satisfactorily carry out the work and the tenant family moved out. There were still “significant issues” in the flat, involving serious health hazards, the spokesman said, and the Private Sector Housing Team was taking action to ensure that the work is completed before Ali is able to re-let the flat. At Bristol Magistrates’ Court in January the 54-year-old landlord, who lives in Henleaze, was fined £1,173 and ordered to pay £1,407 in costs to the council, along with a victim surcharge of £117, for failing to comply with a Housing Act improvement notice. Council cabinet member Steve Reade said: “We will not tolerate landlords failing to meet their legal responsibilities in relation to the conditions of the homes they offer for rent.” Tenants can report issues can at psechousing@southglos.gov. uk or at a council One Stop Shop.

Ciara blows down trees – and sends

STORM Ciara battered the Downend area, bringing down trees, fences and even hurling a trampoline into a busy road. The winter storm blew into the area on the weekend of February 8-9 and the wind and rain continued for several days. In one incident a tree blew down across the Avon Ring Road between the Bromley Heath and Wick Wick roundabouts, bringing traffic to a halt, on the morning of Sunday February 9. Drivers came together to push the tree out of the way, clearing one lane so that traffic could start to move again and alerting the emergency services and council. Lyde Green resident Lucy Lane was among those who helped clear the road. Lucy said: “Three men had pulled over trying to move it, but clearly needed help. “Me and my partner pulled over behind their car past the tree, put our hazards on and got out to help. It’s a good thing I

Branches of a tree brought down by the storm by the Dame School Another tree came down in Mangotsfield, narrowly missing the Dame School building in the park on the corner of St James Street and Richmond Road. South Gloucestershire Council received a total of 28 emergency calls relating to fallen

trees before 10am on Sunday, at locations across the district, with extra emergency teams deployed to tackle hazards. Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called out to 41 incidents, including broken glass, loose signs, a collapsed wall and

downed power lines. The highest recorded gust of wind at a council weather station was 59mph at Grovesend, near Thornbury, at 2.10pm on the Sunday. Hajra Fatima was caught up in one of the more bizarre incidents of the storm when rush hour traffic on Westerleigh Road was held up by a large trampoline which had been blown out of a garden and into the road near the Blackhorse Lane junction.

Hajra, who was on her way from her Downend home to work in Cribbs Causeway, said: “This huge trampoline was rolling around in the road. " It was crazy. I’ve never seen anything like it in Bristol before. “As we reached the traffic lights, two men on the other side came out of their car and picked it up and pushed it back into the garden.” There was further wind and rain a week later as Storm Dennis swept through the area.

Dismay over Lloyds bank branch closure DOWNEND has been dealt a blow with the planned closure of its Lloyds Bank branch. Lloyds Banking Group announced that the Badminton Road branch will close on May 6 as part of a nationwide cull. The news comes less than six months after Lloyds shut in Staple Hill when customers were told they would be able to continue banking locally by visiting the Downend branch. The bank closure has sparked dismay from community leaders and residents, although it has been described as “unsurprising” following the loss of the area's Co-operative Bank in 2014 and its NatWest branch less than a year later as more customers use online services. HSBC and the Yorkshire Building Society retain branches in Badminton Road. According to Lloyds, the number of personal banking customers using the Downend branch had dropped by 35 per cent, with business customers down by five per cent. Downend Voice announced the closure on its Facebook page on January 30, attracting dozens of comments from customers. One said they would be closing their Lloyds accounts

with another calling it a “stupid” decision. Former Downend resident Patricia Pye, now living in New Zealand, said her 90-year-old father relies on the branch as he can't drive or use the internet. “How are the elderly supposed to manage? It's all very well going digital but not everyone has family to help.” Frenchay and Downend councillor Jon Hunt said: “It is really disappointing that Lloyds Bank have decided to close the branch in Downend, which has been in the town for decades and has served hundreds, if not thousands, of local residents. This is the latest branch to close, following the closure of the NatWest branch a few years ago and, although it is unsurprising that this would eventually happen as more and more people move towards online banking, this does not take away from the

importance of having access to a local branch.” Fellow councillor Ben Burton said: “We would have liked Lloyds to have remained present in the town, given how long it has served local people. We are fortunate in Downend to still have a handful of cashpoints on the High Street, but for anyone who wishes to actually visit their branch and have that face-to-face service, they will now have to go over to Fishponds.” Councillor Janet Biggin, chairman of Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council, said: “We know this will unfortunately cause difficulties with people accessing some of their banking requirements, although it has been said that the Post Office will be available for simple banking transactions. The closure of yet another branch of the banking network is going to mean that people will have to travel to Fishponds, Kingswood or Yate as many customers are now

favouring the online facilities rather than branch based banking.” Across the country, a total of 56 Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches will shut between April and October 2020. This will include Lloyds in Hanham which is scheduled to close on June 3. Lloyds Banking Group has already closed 151 branches between January 2018 and August 2019. A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson: “We are committed to having the largest branch network in the UK and, in addition to our branches, all our customers can also use the Post Office to access their banking locally. We have confirmed that a number of branches will close between April and October this year. This is in response to changing customer behaviours and the reduced number of transactions being made in branches.”

Boots to shut surgery pharmacy BOOTS is to close its pharmacy at Christchurch Family Medical Practice in North Street. Difficult market conditions. are blamed for the decision. A precise date for the summer closure is dependent on NHS decisions regarding Boots' pharmacy contract. Nine members of staff at the branch are believed to be affected. A Boots UK spokesman said: “Closing a pharmacy is never an easy decision, nor one we take lightly. In Downend, we can confirm we have taken the decision to close our store at the Christchurch Health Centre. All our colleagues have been offered jobs at nearby Boots stores where possible, and alternative pharmacies are accessible in Downend.” Frenchay and Downend councillor James Griffiths said: “While there are other pharmacies on the High Street and at Cleeve Wood shops, having one attached to the doctors' surgery has made prescriptions much easier. With both of these closures, the alternatives might not be much of an inconvenience for some, but for some of our older and more vulnerable residents, it will be a big inconvenience.” Christchurch Family Medical Practice has been approached for comment.

It has now been eight months since the keys were handed over to the builders and, like other buildings its age, the 798-yearold church has revealed a lot of extra problems which need fixing, including pillars that need underpinning, cracks to be secured and extensive loose plaster to be replaced. New floor tiles have been laid, new heating and lighting has been installed and the church’s west door now leads to a lobby, with access to two toilets. A new kitchen and refreshment area has also been fitted. Church warden Chris Llewellyn said: “With the pews

A look at the work under way at St James Church in Mangotsfield. Picture: Chris Taylor removed and floors levelled, we now have a wonderfully flexible space. “We look forward to moving back into a church building with greatly increased accessibility, with nearly all level floors:

a warm welcoming flexible space for the communities of Mangotsfield, Emerson Green and Lyde Green to use.” Chris said the finished building will have space for concerts and possibly a

community café. The Create 800 appeal has been named for the church’s 800th anniversary, which falls in 2022. Chris said: “By maintaining and updating the building we secure it not just for this generation but for the generations to come. “This work, as well as taking extra time, has also increased costs. To complete we need to raise a further £100,000. “Much fund raising has taken place, in a variety of ways, with grants applied for and some granted. But we now appeal for your help. As well as pay for the extra work, we also must purchase chairs, tables and equipment.” People are being urged to make a donation, however small, towards the work on the Create 800 Virgin Money Giving page, which can be found at bit. ly/2wkzVpr.

‘Friendly and welcoming’ preschool praised AN inspector has praised a Mangotsfield preschool’s happy, enthusiastic children and “friendly and welcoming” staff. Abacus@Mangotsfield, which is based in the United Reformed Church building in Cossham Street, was visited by Ofsted in January and a report has just been published. The education watchdog rates preschools in in four areas: education quality, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Abacus@Mangotsfield, which was founded in 2010 and is one of four settings run by Learning Through Play Ltd, was rated good in all four areas. Inspector Terri Breakwell said: “Children are happy and enthusiastic about coming to the preschool. “Staff have high expectations of all children, follow their interests and help them to make independent choices in their learning. For example, children are involved in choosing the

resources that are on offer throughout the day. “Staff form strong bonds with children from the outset. They provide children with a safe and caring environment for them to learn and grow.” The inspector praised the links the preschool, which has 35 children on its roll, had built with older members of the community through visits to a monthly coffee morning held at the main church hall. The get-togethers, featured

in the Voice last year, helped children learn about their wider community and build their selfesteem, the report said. Other areas highlighted included the preschool’s hospital role-play area, which was said to enhance children’s imaginations and creativity, and the use of “golden rules” to promote good behaviour and sharing. The inspector also praised the “strong partnerships” staff have formed with parents,

adding: “Parents comment on how well their child has settled into the provision and the range of activities on offer when they arrive. Parents describe the staff as 'very friendly and welcoming'.” Pre-school manager Kate Menear said: “We were really pleased that Ofsted highlighted the strong partnership we have with our parents – we pride ourselves on that. “We do have high expectations of the children and we help them to make independent choices when they are learning. We give them praise for their achievements. “It was really nice that the inspector picked up on our links with the church and the children being able to be with different generations. “We’re really proud to get a good rating, because Ofsted changed the inspection framework in September and it has made the standard a lot higher.”

n NEWS NEW metrobus links for Downend and Emersons Green, extra park and rides and support for a new M4 junction are all part of a new transport blueprint for the region. The Joint Local Transport Plan aims to make walking, cycling and public transport the “natural” way to travel around the West of England. It includes an £8.9 billion wishlist of projects for completion in the region by 2036, including a £2.5billion “mass transit system” with sections of underground rail. The revised plan, published at the end of January, follows a public consultation last year that drew around 4,200 responses. But it is already facing calls to be redrawn, because it is based on assumptions from a housing strategy which was axed after criticism from government inspectors. The plan’s authors say the goal of ensuring transport is carbon neutral by 2030, in line with the climate emergency declared by all four councils in the area, “requires a substantial modal shift away from cars to public transport, cycling and walking”. It means congestion charges for motorists are now seen as “likely”, as are fuel tax increases. The plan acknowledges private cars will remain “essential” for some, but envisages most of the vehicles remaining on the road by 2036 will be electric. The plan envisages a mass transit system branching out from central Bristol to the north, south and east of the city and

More metrobus routes on way in transport plan Bath, involving on-street trams or light rail rather than underground, which would be expensive. Metrobus routes from Bromley Heath to Yate, Emersons Green to south Bristol via the Avon Ring Road and Bristol city centre to Bristol Airport are also in the plan. The long-discussed junction 18A for the M4 between Hambrook and Tormarton, with a link road to Yate, is included, along with the extension of the M4 Smart Motorway scheme from the M32 junction east to the A46 junction. A new park and ride near the M32 and another near Warmley, where the A420 meets the ring road, is also in the plan. Changes to the way private and commercial vehicles are used are being mooted, including road user charges, cutting parking spaces, a workplace parking levy, congestion and emissions charging, delivery hubs for online retailers to replace doorto-door deliveries and pooling of space in delivery vehicles are also up for discussion. However, there is currently a shortfall of

at least £6bn in funds for the scheme. At a meeting of South Gloucestershire Council on February 12, campaigners called for the plan, known as JLTP4, to be restarted because it included roads to support large new housing developments proposed in the rejected West of England Joint Spatial Plan (JSP). Meanwhile, the West of England Combined Authority is running consultations on a regional bus strategy and a cycling and walking infrastructure plan until March 15. Weca wants people to have their say on improving the bus network, doubling frequency on some routes and creating better, faster, more reliable and more accessible services. The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan outlines £400m of infrastructure projects to improve cycling and walking across the region. To take part, visit www.travelwest.info/ transportconsultations or call 0117 428 6210 to ask for a paper copy of the consultation documents.

Sexual harassment: PC gets final warning A FORMER Downend police officer has been given a final written warning after he was found to have sexually harassed a colleague. PC Paul Fortune had been praised for saving a young boy from choking in Downend in 2015. But the former Downend and Siston neighbourhood policing team member was brought before a misconduct hearing after being accused of sexually harassing a woman, failing to act with self control or treat female members of police staff with courtesy and respect, and acting less favourably towards them than their male colleagues. PC Fortune also faced an accusation of undermining public confidence in the police force. A misconduct panel decided the warning was “appropriate and proportionate” after multiple allegations against PC Fortune

were proven. The incidents dated between April 2017 and February last year. The panel heard the officer told a female member of staff he had a “really high sex drive” and told her to let him know “if you are ever in need of a partner”. When she made it clear she was not interested, PC Fortune told her: “Are you saying I’m fat and ugly?” The woman took that as a joke, the panel heard. PC Fortune also asked the same woman what time she was finishing work and said: “I can come round to yours after work if you fancy.” The woman complained to a sergeant last February, when PC Fortune massaged her shoulders without permission. However, she accepted he was “tactile” with everyone, thoughtful, kind and caring, and wore his heart on his sleeve. PC Fortune also made

suggestive comments to another female member of police staff, the panel was told. Following the hearing at Avon and Somerset Police’s Portishead HQ, misconduct panel chair Peter Cadman said: “The panel looked at the seriousness of the proven matters. “None of them were individually found to be gross misconduct, but cumulatively they were. “They took place over an extended period of time and were in a background of a more senior officer towards junior officers. “On the other hand, both junior officers had positive things to say about PC Fortune. “Proven allegations of this nature normally give rise to dismissal without notice. “This is the unusual case where a final written warning for such proven matters is actually appropriate and proportionate.” Neighbourhood policing

teams were reorganised into new areas last year. PC Fortune is not currently listed on the police website as a member of the Downend, Frenchay and Stoke Park, Staple Hill and New Cheltenham or Boyd Valley, Emersons and Lyde Green neighbourhood policing teams. n INTERVIEW How long have you been at Mangotsfield? I taught my first lesson here as a newly qualified English teacher in 2002 and worked here for a number of years before marriage, children and a move to Chipping Sodbury School. It was a joy to return to Mangotsfield 18 months ago as deputy head and when the opportunity arose to apply for the permanent post of headteacher I had to go for it!

Hetty Blackmore has become the first woman headteacher at Mangotsfield School. She tells the Voice about her plans for the future

I love this school. I was Miss Tabor back then and I taught English and media studies and ran two World Challenge expeditions, to Botswana and Zambia in 2006 and to India in 2008. I am still in touch with some of the first tutor group I saw through the school. They are in their late 20s now and some of them have become teachers, which is lovely.

How will you develop the school’s relationships with parents, neighbours and the wider community?

What do you see as the current strengths of Mangotsfield School?

Will you be making lots of changes? No! I have taken over halfway through the academic year and I am continuing with The Mangotsfield Way, which we launched in September. One of my reasons for wanting the job was that I knew the school was on the right track and I wanted to drive it forward. Tell us more about the Mangotsfield Way It is our school vision. We want our students to Love Learning, Embrace Challenge and Show Respect and we are all working together to create a strong community. Our staff team are committed to delivering an ambitious, culturally broad and knowledge rich curriculum, and to meeting the needs of individuals. How do you bring learning to life for students? I always want learning to be as exciting and engaging as possible, both inside and outside the classroom. Recently, we had a Holocaust survivor in to speak to students. Another highlight was a Greek myths day for the whole of Year 9, while a group of students has been ski-ing in Andorra. Mangotsfield has never received a Good report from Ofsted and exam results are below average. How will you tackle this? Our data is disappointing, there’s no denying that, but we have a clear picture of what

Is there help beyond the trust? Government funding is enabling me to have support from Dave Baker, CEO of Olympus Trust and a National Leader of Education. South Gloucestershire secondary schools, which most people now know are poorly funded compared with the rest of the country, are working hard to improve their performance. I have always believed in being outward facing; I previously worked as an Advanced Skills Teacher, which took me into other schools for extended spells.

So you have happy memories of the school?

It is a very calm place for learning. Behaviour is good. Our Ready to Learn system works so well now that the numbers of students having to leave lessons has halved from a year ago. Our support for vulnerable students is also recognised as very strong.

governors, including our experienced chair Ann Duff. The trust is appointing a director of education and the school is recruiting two deputy heads.

Hetty Blackmore with head girls and boy Josie Batten and Kamal Mendez-Gardener we have to do. Like many schools, we are returning to a two-year GCSE programme to ensure students in their first three years with us receive the breadth of curriculum they are entitled to. We will decrease the number of GCSEs that students sit. Mangotsfield recently closed its sixth form. What's your feeling about that? There is sadness about the loss of the sixth form, of course, but we are fortunate in having a close partnership with Downend School, whose Post 16 centre with excellent teaching and a record of success, is only a mile away. The change allows us to really concentrate on our delivery of the curriculum for our 11-16 students. Many readers remember Mangotsfield featuring - not always in a positive light - in the BBC TV series School in 2018. How do you feel about that? It’s important to realise that the show was filmed more than two years ago. The school has continued on a dramatic journey of improvement ever since and is now in great shape. Anyone who would like to see for themselves the reality of life at Mangotsfield in 2020 is welcome to contact me to arrange a visit. What support do you have for continuing that improvement journey? Being part of CSET - Castle School Education Trust - is a great help. I work closely with the three other secondary headteachers (of Downend, Marlwood and Castle), the CEO Will Roberts and his team, and our

Last year’s high-profile fundraising project, Mango 50, had the benefit of increasing parental engagement and we are very grateful to our Friends of Mangotsfield School, who support us in many ways. We have plans for engaging with business and community groups locally and are also keen for our students to go out into Bristol and beyond to take advantage of the many opportunities available to them. What role do students play in building community at Mangotsfield School? There is no stopping them! Students have trained as Anti Bullying Ambassadors and Wellbeing Buddies and have supported the Resound foodbank. Our Eco Team is particularly proactive; they have presented assemblies, sold wax wrap, worked to reduce single-use plastic on site and they have plans to create a bee-friendly garden on site. How do you see the school’s future? It’s looking promising! We have 74 teaching staff and 38 support staff dedicated to taking this truly comprehensive school into the 2020s. We are building strong relationships ; I am always out and about around school - I even have a pink hi-vis jacket given to me by students. We have about 1060 on our roll at present and our numbers are growing. Offers go out this month to prospective Year 7 students for September and we look forward to getting to know them and their families. Finally, this is a big job you have taken on. How do you switch off from the pressures of the role? My husband is also a teacher and we have two children, aged eight and ten, so I spend a lot of my ‘free’ time running round after them. We have a 1985 camper van and enjoy and enjoy camping in West Wales and Devon. I run, do yoga and read - lots! I am an English teacher after all.

DONATIONS to the area’s biggest foodbank are soaring – and so is the number of people needing help. The Resound Foodbank in Blackhorse Road received more than 13 tonnes of food in 2019. The total of 13,310kg was up by 16% on 2018’s figure of 11,185kg. The amount of food and household supplies issued to people in need was just over 12.5 tonnes – up by almost a third on the previous year. People are referred to foodbanks when emergencies

Foodbank demand rises mean they are unable to afford to buy food, for example in the aftermath of being made homeless or unemployed. Families can be referred to a foodbank by a professional such as a social worker, health visitor or Jobcentre official up to three times every six months and are given a food voucher. Last year 393 vouchers were redeemed at the Resound

foodbank, a 30% rise on 2018. A total of 1,223 people – half of them children – were fed, again up 30% on the previous year. Over Christmas 3,129kg of food and supplies was donated – up by a quarter on last year – with 2,375kg handed out – up 15%.A total of 239 people in 77 families were helped. A defibrillator gives an electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. Christine Bilella, secretary of DFHA, said members are very grateful to the Rotary club: “Over the years the surrounding area has become populated with many new housing estates and the need for quick medical assistance has become an important issue. “Heart attacks are so common today, but with the use of a defibrillator many people have

Christ Church Junior School head Pippa Osborne with Year 5 pupils in the reopened library

Cabinet member for schools Erica Williams with head Pippa Osborne, chair of governors Claire Edmunds and Councillor Jon Hunt

School’s ‘brilliant’ new library is open IT has taken 14 months, more than £100,000 and support from across the community, but now Christ Church Junior School has a library to be proud of. The school’s old library was inundated with water when torrential rain breached the conservatory roof during a storm in late 2018. Water flooded through in multiple places, ruining hundreds of books, a computer, heaters and carpets. Straight away people worked together to help make things right. More than 30 volunteers arrived to help clean up and dry out the books that could be saved. Although hundreds were lost, about 80% of them were saved. South Gloucestershire Council agreed to pay for the structural repairs which, at around £70,000, cost almost twice the initial estimate. And the school received donations of cash, books and practical help from individuals, groups and businesses. A crowdfunding page was set up, collections were made by Christ Church and Bristol Rovers, banks RBS

and HSBC gave money and staff time, and Downend WI members donated books. In total £17,000 was donated towards re-stocking and furnishing the library, with further money from school funds bringing he total cost of the project to just over £100,000. Head teacher Pippa Osborne said: “It’s been such a journey, and not one I would have wished to undertake in a million years, but what we can now offer is brilliant compared with what was here before. “We have been overwhelmed by the support we’ve had, from both the council and the local community. “Everyone has been so intent on getting the library back to being the hub of excellence and reading that it should be, and that’s what I’m so grateful for. I’m overwhelmed. “We had 700 books donated – it’s amazing. One of the ladies in the WI bought some brand new books in her husband’s memory: there have been so many personal stories. There’s been a lot of organisation, refilling cupboards full of donated books from the community, categorising books, taking

The council said the roof was redesigned to withstand future storms, and it had done the work while keeping the school open. Cabinet member for schools Erica Williams said: “I am so pleased that the hard work and investment to restore this vital school library has paid off and that hundreds of pupils will now be able to enjoy reading and learning here for years to come. “As a council we were all devastated to hear about the damage caused by Storm Diana. Improving school standards is our number one priority, so I’m delighted that we have been able to support the school and work with them deliver this wonderful new library.”

Joining forces to help poverty victims A NEW partnership is launching in Staple Hill that could help pull people from the cycle of poverty. The initiative will see Staple Hill Community Hub join forces with Bristol-based charity the Matthew Tree Project. The organisations will come together weekly on a Thursday at the Hub to offer free fresh food to people living in the area. But rather than acting just as a food bank, clients will also be able to access a wide range of support such as debt management, help with a CV, how to change energy suppliers, benefit advice and health and wellbeing information. The Matthew Tree currently delivers similar programmes in Filwood, Lawrence Hill, Brislington and Cadbury Heath, with the Staple Hill project expected to launch in May. Staple Hill Community Hub, based at the flats in Berkeley House, was set up to improve the quality of life for people

living in the area. The project is an extension of the emergency food bank set up by the Hub last year after witnessing a growing demand in the area. Hub trustee Angela Bragg said: “We currently offer emergency food bank parcels which can be collected from us but the Matthew Tree offers a mobile refrigerated food bank. This means they can provide fresh meat, diary products and vegetables, something we can't do.” Volunteers at the Hub will act as food packers and meeters and greeters, with specialised 'client navigation' volunteers meeting clients on a one-to-one basis to find out how they can be helped. Information will then be fed back to office staff at the Matthew Tree who will contact outside agencies to set up support, which will often be available at the Hub the following week. Angela said: “The Matthew Tree liaises with different

Hub trustee Angela Bragg (foreground) and manager Julie Snelling say they have seen an increased demand for emergency food supplies agencies such as social services, energy and health so they can help get people out of debt, improve their health and help with benefits. If there's anything they can do to help the client get out of the situation that led them to use a food bank, they will. “It takes the idea of a food bank one step further - it's a holistic approach.” At the moment people can turn up at the Hub without a referral for emergency food supplies. This work will continue but the new project will be more formal and people will need to be referred with an appointment. “People may not want any help, and that's fine – we won't force people,” said Angela. “We've definitely seen an increase in demand for food supplies. We started off last year keeping some food in case we came across anyone who was in dire straits but now the number of cases is immense. Some of them are just heart rending. Clearly - and unfortunately there is a need for this sort of service. “It's not just changes to the benefits system which has led to this, it's a whole raft of things such as someone losing their job, getting into debt, alcoholism, drugs, and so on. We're really excited about this project. We want to put things in place to help people help themselves.” Hub manager Julie Snelling said: “We can only hold ambient foods – dried, tinned and

We're really looking forward to working with the Matthew Tree as it will be a massive improvement on the service we can give.” Mark Goodway, founder and CEO of the Matthew Tree Project, said: “Staple Hill is a high priority area with higher than average households struggling to make ends meet and children growing up in poverty - which has a devastating effect on their future life chances. “Ultimately, our hope is that we can, collectively, create a society where no-one is living below the poverty line and there is no need for services such as this. But in the meantime, we are grateful that through our partnership with Staple Hill Community Hub more people and families will have access to a highly effective support service that will help them out of crisis and into a happier, healthier and better future.” Volunteers are needed to help out with the project on Thursdays from 9.30am until 2pm, followed by de-briefing time. All volunteers will get eight weeks' of training on Monday evenings before the launch. To find out more about volunteering, call 01454 868 374 or email hello@ staplehillcommunityhub.org.uk

Bikers and thieves 'put wood's future at risk' A DOG walker has warned Britannia Wood could cease to exist because of the rapid rate that trees are being felled there. Sarah Appleton regularly walks her lurcher at the beauty spot, nestled between Overndale Road and Dial Lane allotments. She says the woods, which are owned by South Gloucestershire Council, are becoming unrecognisable now that around 60 trees have been destroyed. She believes they are being cut down for firewood. In recent weeks, the problem has been exacerbated by youngsters making way for an unofficial track for bikes, with paths dug up and make-shift ramps created out of pallets. Sarah said: “It used to be such a beautiful place but gradually people have been going in there literally chopping the trees down. I even saw a man go in there with a wheelbarrow and axe. “In the last couple of weeks, I've noticed it's really hard to see where the footpath is because people seem to have gone to great effort to dig up some sort of track. I'm not sure if they are using mountain bikes or motocross bikes as I've not seen them but it's obvious what the woods are being used for. “There's a flat area with no vegetation where people must sit to watch the bikes and it's full of litter. They're also using some sort of a knife to rip the bark off the trees. “It's just horrific down there now. It's just not a pleasant place to walk any more. It's such a shame for local people because it was such a lovely place. “There are huge numbers of trees which have disappeared. I'd say there were about 60 small trees which have gone. The big trees are still there because you'd

have to know what you're doing to fell those. “Eventually there won't be a wood there, there won't be anything left.” Sarah, who walks her dog there two or three times a week, said she believed the site is now hazardous. “There are health and safety implications as the way everything has been dug up has left bits of root and wood sticking up. It looks like an amateurish skate park. “I understand young people need to have somewhere to go and need to have adventures but it's important they have respect for the environment. There have always been teenagers congregating in the woods over the years but they've never really done any harm up until now. “There was a sign saying people will be fined if they damage the vegetation but it looks like someone's taken that down. The problem is who's going to police the woods? I've seen someone chopping a tree down but I'm not going to approach someone with an axe.” A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: “One of our Arborists visited Britannia Wood recently after receiving reports of trees being felled for firewood but found an area of laurel had been cleared, which is an invasive species and would have taken over if left unmanaged. "An officer from our StreetCare team will inspect the paths and take the appropriate action to make sure they are clear and any rubbish is removed. ] "We encourage members of the public to report these issues by calling 01454 868000 or via our website www.southglos.gov. uk/reportit”

T’S quite a key part of being opticians, and something we never take for granted - the benefit to our patients of a new pair of glasses. Now there are many reasons you may wish to visit an optician, from needing an eye test for work to checking your vision meets the driving standard, but let's never forget that such an important part of our work is simply providing you with clearer vision. I read an article recently entitled protecting your eyes from winter. I must say that this caught my eye. Tips included turning down your heating to prevent dry eye, which is may be OK for some, but I know this would be unpopular in my house! The advice to cut down on coffee to prevent dry eye was an interesting one as well. Now I’m not saying I totally disagree with this advice but perhaps if you’ve dry eye in the winter try drinking a little more water and even using artificial tear drops too. I’ve also read about the lower winter light levels making it harder for us to see indoors. This is quite sensible, and I’m sure many of us would just reach for the light switch and hey presto it’s light again! Seriously though, I think the point being made was that in dim light you’re more aware of the changes in vision you’ve maybe been putting off getting looked at. We all do it, just because we're human. Perhaps we also have at the back of our minds the cost of getting help, as well as the desire to keep our eyes young. Well, we can help here! Our exciting new glasses collection

called Maxx give you the on trend look we all want as well as a price to keep your wallets to happy too. Whether you need help to see far, close or far and close, with our custom design lenses it’s only you who will know that your glasses aren’t just to make you look smarter. If you choose glasses from the new Maxx range you’ll get lighter lenses and anti-glare coating all included. You and your family are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and on-trend new Maxx glasses. We’d like to check you can see clearly and have healthy eyes too. To book an extended eye exam or frame style consultation for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Remembering Fleur

n ADVERTISING FEATURE

FIREFIGHTERS gathered in memory of a young colleague who lost her life tackling a fire in Staple Hill. Fleur Lombard died on February 4 1996 after the Leo’s supermarket in Broad Street was set on fire by an arsonist. She was caught in a flashover in the building, which stood on the site now occupied by the Tesco Metro store, and was killed as a direct result of the intense heat. Every year the anniversary of her death is marked with a ceremony at the spot attended by serving and former firefighters, Fire Brigades Union representatives, friends and family. Avon Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Mick Crennell said: “Fleur’s loss is keenly felt across the service to this day and it is something we will never forget. “This tragic loss goes to show just how dangerous our profession is and that it can take the best of us. Fire does not distinguish, just like we don’t distinguish when we answer the call. “Unfortunately, some pay the ultimate sacrifice but we will never forget her and will ensure that her memory lives on.” Fleur was just 21 when she was killed. She had graduated in 1994 with the Silver Axe award for most outstanding recruit on her training school, and was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal and Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation in recognition of her bravery.

Ian leads blood donor campaign

27

MOT & SERVICING COSTS TO MAKE YOU SMILE SERVICE FROM £99 MOT FROM £35

CAMPAIGNER Ian Boulton says rules that stop gay men from giving blood are based on “outdated prejudice”. The chairman of South Gloucestershire LGBT+Equality Network is campaigning for rules to be relaxed which say men who have sex with other men can't give blood for three months. Ian, who is councillor for Staple Hill and Mangotsfield, said: “There is a desperate shortage of blood donors and male blood is particularly valuable because of the properties it tends to have. At the moment sexually active men who have sex with men are excluded from donating regardless of their sexual history. This means that a monogamous gay couple cannot give blood; however a straight man with multiple sexual partners is still welcome as a donor. “Given that all blood products are screened for blood borne infections this ruling appears to be based on out dated prejudice rather than sound and clinical based risk assessment. “While, theoretically, there may be a minuscule risk that blood from a donor who has

recently acquired an infection may not get picked up in the screening process, to exclude a significant number of people purely because of their sexuality rather than their sexual behaviour is discriminatory, stereotyping and a terrible wasted resource during a time of great need.” Gay men were banned from giving blood in the 1980s on the back of the HIV/AIDS crisis. This was lifted in 2011 and a year ban put in its place. This was amended to three months in 2017. Ian said: “Interestingly the National Blood Service do not even try to defend this indefensible situation except to say that they are bound by Government rulings. To put it bluntly, the current Government ruling appears to be just a throwback to an earlier, less enlightened, age which ignores current thinking and clinical evidence of how ridiculous this situation is.” There are a number of campaigns that are raising the profile of the situation, including www.freedomtodonate.co.uk

Warning over purse thieves POLICE want to trace these two men after a woman had her purse stolen in the car park of Tesco in Staple Hill. The woman, who is in her 60s, told police she felt she was being watched when paying for her shopping at the store in Broad Street. At her car she was approached by a man who asked for directions to Cossham Hospital. While she was distracted, a second man stole her purse, containing her credit cards, driving licence and cash. Avon and Somerset police have released CCTV footage of two people they want to question about the theft, which happened on November 20 at around 11am. Police say they were white, aged 25-35 and had Eastern European accents. The man who approached the victim was about 5ft 6in tall, with black hair. He was wearing a grey top and jeans. The second man had dark, short hair and facial hair. He was wearing a navy or dark puffer jacket, dark jeans and grey boots. Investigator Hannah Gordon said it was a “common tactic” for thieves to target lone women in shops, watching them enter their PIN before stealing from them in the car park. Anyone who thinks they know the men involved should call 101 and quote the crime reference number 5219 268 675. Police are advising anyone worried about their PIN being found out to contact their bank immediately to change it.

Car parts stolen DRIVERS are being warned over a series of thefts of catalytic converter thefts. Incidents have been reported across South Gloucestershire, including in the Co-op car park in Downend and Aspects Leisure Park in Longwell Green. Thieves target catalytic converters, which are part of a car’s exhaust system, because they contain precious metals including gold and platinum. Police have warned drivers to take precautions to “minimise the risk” of falling victim to the thieves. They include not leaving a car in an unattended car park overnight, parking in a locked garage or well-lit area and ensuring cars are always locked and alarmed when parked. But motorists who have written on social media about falling victim to the thieves have reported a number of thefts taking place in broad daylight: one car is reported to have had its converter stolen while the owner was in the Co-op for less than half an hour, while another was targeted while parked outside the office where its owner worked. A police spokesperson said several vehicles believed to have been involved in the thefts have used false number plates, to try to avoid detection. Any drivers who notice their number plate has been stolen are being urged to contact the police on 101.

Lent challenge

CHRIST Church is offering parishioners the chance to take up a 40-day challenge to protect the earth. During Lent the church is encouraging adults and children to “Care for Creation”. Jenny Rawling, from the church, said: “During this time, we hope people might engage in prayer, learn more about the remarkable world we have been given and build habits that last beyond the season to protect and honour the earth. Everyone is most welcome to join us in our mission to become an eco-church.” Sermons each week will focus on an aspect of the 40-day challenge and will be available as a podcast on the church's website for anyone who is not able to attend in person.

Praying for normal people ... MORE than 20 different prayer stations were set out in the new flexible layout at Christ Church as part of a “How to Pray” course in February. Christ Church congregations have been looking at different ways to pray after studying a recent book from Pete Grieg called “How to pray - a simple

guide for normal people”. Helen Buick, from Christ Church, said: “In our weekday home groups we have been doing a video course called The Prayer Course with questions and discussion times. It has been really encouraging to see people discover new ways to pray and grow in their faith.”

A QUIZ night at Christ Church Downend attracted families from across the community. New curate Aidan Watson took on the role of quizmaster. Teams were challenged to create clay sculptures of Rev Jo Vickery struck a pose as a model for the evening.

n PAGE PARK NEWS

#GrowingStapleHill takes to the streets

GREEN-FINGERED volunteers at Page Park are turning their attention to Staple Hill's shopping area now that the Heritage Lottery project is winding down. Working alongside people with learning disabilities, they are hoping to work their magic along Broad Street and High Street to transform the landscape with floral displays and planting schemes. The project, which comes under the umbrella of #GrowingStapleHill, is being carried out by Be Empowered Farm Futures (BEFF). The group is made up of volunteers who run a gardening club for people with disabilities at Page Park polytunnel. They believe gardening and working with nature helps promote confidence and employability skills as well as combating isolation and social exclusion. As well as brightening up Staple Hill, the aim of the initiative is to increase footfall, attract new businesses and provide improved job opportunities for residents. The scheme will have the added benefit of using plants that will help counteract pollution. The team has already started weeding and planting at the flowers beds beside Tesco with future sessions planned along the main road. The main focus will be on Fountain Square, with new planters built and installed there. BEFF will run the scheme for the first year after which it is hoped other volunteers and traders will come forward to continue the work. Maria Needs, from BEFF, said: “The first session went brilliantly. A lot of people we work with don't have a garden so they never get the chance to tend to plants. It gives them the opportunity to escape isolation and segregation and meet new friends. They're doing something purposeful so it makes them feel worthwhile. There's so much they gain from it, and they love it.” The scheme is being financed by a grant from Bromford Housing Association and from Member Awarded Funding from Staple Hill and Mangotsfield councillors Ian Boulton, Michael Bell and Katie Cooper. Cllr Boulton said: “This will be the third year of our #GrowingStapleHill project and I am absolutely delighted that volunteers at Be Empowered Farm Futures will be giving us so much practical help in our town centre. As well as getting our hands dirty, Katie, Michael and I are pleased that we can provide some financial support through our MAF grant and I hope that our local traders will also support and engage in this work as we endeavour to make Staple Hill an even more attractive place for visitors to come and use our wonderful local shops.” Friends of Page Park are supporting the project. Vice chair Steph Purser said she is hoping for additional support from South Gloucestershire Council to help improve the main area: “Cllr Boulton and I have met with officers from the council and walked down the high street pointing out things that need cleaning like the litter bins, which are in a terrible state. We are hoping they will put a programme of work into their schedule over the next year to try to make Staple Hill a nicer place to visit.” • Be Empowered Farm Futures are looking to buy a plot around two to five acres within a of a few miles of Staple Hill. They want to establish a care farm to continue and increase their horticultural therapy work. Contact them on www.befarmfutures.co.uk Further information about the project will be available at the Staple Hill Partnership meeting on Thursday March 19 at 7pm at the Salvation Army Citadel in Staple Hill.

Electric fence 'harmless' AN ELECTRIC fence put up around the bowling green at Page Park is safe, according to South Gloucestershire Council. The fence has been installed by Page Park Bowls Club in a bid to deter badgers and foxes from digging up the green. But its arrival sparked fears from people who use the park because of the lack of information about the fence and its voltage. Page Park Preschool is based in the park and the bowling green is next to a polytunnel where adults with disabilities have been learning about horticulture. The council told Downend Voice that the fence, which is programmed to come on from 6pm to 8am, is safe. A spokesman said it carried a maximum of 12 volts and was “harmless”. He added the fence has a regulator which means that the current is not continuous. John Walters, chairman of Page Park Bowls Club, said: “At the moment the fence is inactive. The council have all the information and are dealing with this.”

Appeal for surplus seeds FRIENDS of Page Park are calling on the community to donate unwanted packets of seeds to help raise money. They plan to grow the seeds before selling the plants at events and plant sales. Proceeds will go towards future work in the park. People can drop their seeds off or send them to the Bean Tree Cafe. The Friends are planning plant stalls at the VE anniversary party on Friday May 8 and at Armed Forces Day on Saturday June 20, with pop up events taking place in the Sensory Garden throughout the summer.

Farm says thanks A FARM providing work for people with learning disabilities has been helped back on its feet by the community after a devastating burglary. Individual donors, groups and businesses have given more than £11,000 to Elm Tree Farm in Stapleton, which was ransacked in December. The social enterprise has also been given power tools and other equipment to replace some of what was lost, with groups including Downend Men in Sheds among those stepping forward to help out. Brandon Trust, which runs the farm, has thanked everyone who has helped – but the charity still urgently needs help to replace the Transit van it used to take its produce to shops, which the burglars drove off in. The thieves broke in on the weekend of December 7-8, stealing money, woodworking tools, garden equipment and the van.

They also damaged the site, including tearing out a safe. In addition to cash donations of more than £11,800, the farm has received woodworking power tools and hand tools, a work bench, chainsaws, lawn mowers and other gardening equipment, safety wear and practical help, to improve security and repair the damage. Brandon Trust chief executive Sue Porto said: “The burglary was a devastating blow, particularly for the 80 people with learning disabilities and autism who work at the farm. “However, we’ve been blown away by the generosity of so many people." The trust still needs help to replace the stolen van, which was used to help workers get to the farm and take produce to St Nick’s farmers’ market every Wednesday. Anyone who can offer help should call 0117 907 7200 or email info@brandontrust.org.

Medic wins prize A MEDIC who helps people with fertility issues to become parents has won a top research prize. Jen Nisbett, who lives in Downend, is a clinical embryologist at the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine. Her work at the centre, which is based at Southmead Hospital, involves carrying out IVF, making observations and keeping records of how embryos develop. Jen, 33, has been researching how implanting frozen embryos in patients is more likely to result in a viable pregnancy than using fresh embryos in certain circumstances, helping more women to have babies. She presented her research at the national Fertility 2020 conference for scientific research and was awarded the conference’s Post

Registration Best Oral Presentation prize against stiff competition. Jen was one of 78 researchers to present at the conference in Edinburgh, whittled down from a total of 342 applicants. The mum-of-two, who completed her clinical training at BCRM, said: “These discoveries about the use of frozen embryos are really exciting, because all our work is targeted at helping women facing potential childlessness to succeed in having babies of their own. “I was thrilled to discover that winning the prize means I’ll be going to Sydney in August to present these findings.” To find out more about Jen’s pioneering work, you can read her blog posts at fertilitybristol. com/embryologist-a-day-inthe-life/

n DOWNEND FOLK CLUB PREVIEW Salt House

(with support from Jon Wilks) Friday March 20 Frenchay Village Hall THERE will be a distinctly Scottish flavour at Downend Folk Club this month with the brilliant trio Salt House the headline guests as they tour the UK with their new album, which sees them solidify their reputation as fine interpreters of words both old and new. Huam, (the call of an owl) is their third collection of songs, and the second pairing with producer Andy Bell, and will be released in March 2020 on Hudson Records. Songs are central to Salt House. New songs that sound as if they’ve always been here. Ancient ballads woken up. Poems given the tunes they’ve long deserved. Songs about place, politics, landscape and birds. The trio continue their love of recording "on location" with this album, taking themselves to rural Argyllshire to finish writing and recording the songs which were crafted between their homes of Inverness- shire and Shetland.

Singer, guitarist and harmonium player Jenny has a PhD in seabirds. Described by R2 Magazine as “a singer-songwriter who brings together the old and new with a rare skill”, her songs are earthy and wise; she sings them with beauty and power. Singer and guitarist Ewan brings to Salt House a wealth of understanding and experience gained from collaboration with musicians from all corners of the scene. His songs are poetic and layered; his voice plaintive and from the heart. Fiddler, viola player and vocalist

Lauren’s arrangements hold a rich, deep, darkness flecked with gold. You can hear the Highlands in Lauren’s elegant bowing, and a knowledge of how to weave around a narrative. She plays with warmth, wisdom and soul. You’ll also hear echoes of Pentangle, a touch of Dick Gaughan, murmurs of Scandinavian and Scots, all woven into a music that’s traditional and new. The group’s meticulous attention to detail, shared passions and care for their craft sees Set House soar.

Support on the evening will come from Jon Wilks. Jon writes about folk music and performs it when people let him. His live shows are an amusing mix of folk song performance and conversation, throwing in tidbits of weird and wonderful information about the original singers and collectors that he has come across during his writing research. To date, Jon has released two solo albums, as well as three albums and one EP with The Grizzly Folk, and an album and EP with Japan-based indie band, Cut Flowers, in a former life. Tickets are available from Melanie’s Kitchen or online from downendfolkclub.co.uk. They are priced at £12 each in advance (£10 for members), or £14 on the door. There will be a full bar and a raffle. You are encouraged to bring your own glass/mug/tankard/bucket, as well as reusable bottles for water, as part of the club’s drive to be more environmentally aware. There is now a 50p discount for those bringing their own receptacles. For further information, visit the website, Facebook or Twitter or email downendfolkclub@live.com.

Clean sweep for RedX A POPULAR dance troupe attended their first competition of the season – and took the top spot in every category. Members of Staple Hill-based RedX Dance travelled to the Street House Championships in Newport at the end of January following months of rehearsals honing their high-energy dance skills. But nothing could have prepared them for the stunning set of results they achieved when they walked off with firsts in the under 10s category, under 12s, under 14s and under 16s as well as in the adult parent team section. The RXD Mega Crew, made up of 68 dancers aged from six to 18, were also declared champions. First places were also achieved in solos, duets and quads as well as some second, third and fourth places. Gaby Sorisi-Thomas, who runs the Page Road-based RedX with her sister Jasmine, said: “RedX brought the energy and absolutely smashed it! Everyone worked so hard and we are all so proud.”

Air ambulance support ROTARY members who raised money to help pay for the area’s air ambulance got to see where their donation is going when they visited the helicopter’s base. Great Western Air Ambulance Charity coordinator Joe Hughes and two members of the ambulance critical care team showed members of the Fishponds and Downend Rotary Club around the new air base at Almondsbury and gave a presentation about the charity’s work. The club has donated £1,000 raised from various fund-raising events last year to the charity and co-presidents Dave Baker and Phil Simon presented the money to Joe at the event. The GWAAC provides a team of critical care doctors and paramedics who provide complex specialist treatment at the scene, as well as flying casualties to hospital. The charity attends an average of five incidents per day and is funded entirely by donations. Organisations considering fundraising for GWAAC who would like to find out more about its work should contact joe.hughes@gwaac. com to arrange for a representative to visit.

Charity bash at rugby club A MUM whose twin daughters have a rare genetic disorder which means their bodies can't break down protein is hosting a family fundraising disco in Mangotsfield later this month. Leanne Barnett's two-and-a-half-year-old girls Olivia and Ruby have been diagnosed with phenylketonuria - known as PKU – and have to stick to a strict diet where their protein intake has to be precisely measured. If the twins exceed their quota, their protein levels will rocket and long-term this can cause brain damage, learning difficulties, anxiety, depression and behavioural problems. Leanne and husband Peter are campaigning for a drug called Kuvan to be made more widely available. The drug is licensed but is so expensive that it is rarely available on the NHS. The family has been told it could cost £100,000 a year for both girls. Leanne, from Kingswood, is organising the charity bash at Cleve Rugby Club on Saturday March 28 from 6-11pm and all are welcome. Proceeds will go to the National Society For Phenylketonuria United Kingswood (NSPKU). Entry to the disco costs £2 and includes a buffet with lowprotein foods. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance or on the night. For more information and to purchase raffle tickets email leannepkufundraiser@gmail.com If you are unable to attend but would like to make a donation, please visit Leanne's Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/leanne7976

Boys mugged in park Community choir seeks THREE boys were robbed of their bikes as they cycled in Page Park. Police have tracked down one of the stolen bikes and questioned a 15-year-old boy over the mugging but say their inquiries into the incident are continuing. An Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said a group of boys, aged between 11 and 13, were cycling in the park at about 5.15pm on January 23 when three older boys came up to them. The spokesperson said: “The older boys took three bicycles off the younger ones, pushing one of them. No one was hurt but officers are investigating the incident as a robbery." The suspects were in their late teens and were wearing black padded jackets, with their faces covered. Since the incident was first reported, said the spokesperson, a red and luminous green Voodoo Hoodoo mountain bike with a green saddle had been returned and a boy aged 15 had voluntarily attended a police station in connection with the incident. Police are still trying to trace two other suspects and two missing bikes: a bright yellow and green Diamond Back mountain bike with red handlebars, and a silver Mafia Bomma mountain bike, with rear pegs covered with blue tape, a suede saddle and white slick tyres. Anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting crime reference number 5220 019 097. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

new musical director A DOWNEND choir is looking for a new musical director to inspire members in the years ahead. Bromley Heath Community Choir is a non-auditioned, mixed ability women’s community choir which meets monthly to sing a wide variety of popular music chosen by choir members. Established six years ago under current MD Nicholas Bromilow, the choir has around 30 regular attendees each month, with numbers increasing steadily. The choir is now seeking a gifted and enthusiastic MD who can lead members through their next stage of development, starting from September. Members meet during the first weekend of each month at

the church hall in Quakers Road from 1-5pm. Deb Ellis from the choir said: “There are regular refreshment opportunities during each session. We love to sing, laugh, support each other and eat cake!” The choir, which has appeared on TV with Gareth Malone, sings at Bristol SANDs memorial services, Heathfest and hosts a Christmas fundraising concert each December. Fee and responsibilities are negotiable and anyone interested should email a covering letter and CV to bhcchoir@outlook. com by March 30, with interviews and auditions for prospective MDs with the choir on May 3.

n AROUND THE WIs MANGOTSFIELD WI IN a change to the proposed programme of events, our February meeting was all about relaxing and unwinding with friends. We are excellent at arranging events even at short notice. So we drafted in some assistance to help us learn a few techniques to unwind and relax. As always we enjoyed meeting visitors and welcoming new members. Our meeting on Monday March 23 will be about hedgehogs. Yvonne Cox from Hedgehog Rescue in South Gloucestershire will come to speak. It will be an interesting and informative talk and I wonder if she will bring any hedgehogs? If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone. We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening. You will be able to enjoy cake and a cuppa and start making new friends. I guarantee that you will be offered the best cake ever, you may learn a new skill too. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and any visitors can attend for one free visit and a subsequent visit at £4. BEECHMERE BELLES: EMERSONS & LYDE WI BEING part of a WI brings with it a feeling of belonging and the chance to meet new people and learn new things on a regular basis. I have been a member for a couple of years now and find it brilliant that after every meeting, I have either met another interesting lady or been inspired to try something new. At our last meeting I got talking to a new member whilst enjoying a wonderful piece of cake, it was so good I had to ask for the recipe, not only was she a lovely lady but her shopping bag caught my eye. Looking at it more closely I found it was covered on both sides by the most beautiful cross stitch designs. Instead of having the finished

product framed and hung a wall, she had neatly pressed, hemmed and sewn onto both sides of the bag. What a fantastic idea, meeting this lady has inspired me to try something different. Beechmere Belles had a very insightful talk from Andrew Flack about the origins and history of Bristol Zoo. It is the fifth oldest in the world, and it was amazing to hear how forward-thinking Bristol Zoo was and still is. His talk was accompanied by pictures and the photos of Rosie the elephant giving rides to the children brought back memories for some members. It was also amazing that Alfred, the silverback gorilla, remained at the zoo during WW2. He became quite a hit with the US service men based in Bristol. Even making it into the press back in America due to the fact the service men used to write home about him. March brings with it not only better weather, fingers crossed, but the perky little heads of daffodils and other spring flowers that will brighten our days. This month’s meeting will be led by the bee lady, I’m sure we will learn some interesting things about these very important insects, how to stop a sting hurting would be good. We also have our Sunday lunch club to look forward to and the Cinema Club will be off to see Military Wives. We really are being busy bees. Beechmere Belles sends huge congratulations to our ex-treasurer on the safe arrival of her gorgeous baby boy, born in February and in March one of our lovely younger members gets married. We all wish her the most fantastic day ever and look forward to seeing the photos and hearing all about it. Wishing you and your future husband luck and happiness always. If you would like to try the WI please join us every fourth Thursday of the month at Emersons Green Village Hall, 7.30 for a 7.45pm start, you can come as a visitor and decide if you would like to join at a later date. The WI is a fully inclusive organisation that welcomes everybody that lives their lives as a woman. Check us out on our Facebook page Emersons Green & Lyde Green WI - Beechmere Belles

These are just some of the fantastic events we have planned at the Bromley Heath WI: we meet on Thursday evenings at Bromley Heath Junior School. Our next meeting is Thursday March 12 at 7.15pm, when we will have Megan from Green Plants, who will be teaching us how to care for our houseplants. Speaking personally, some of us may need more help than others. We are always pleased to welcome guests: why not come along and have a chat with us over a cup of tea and slice of cake? n NEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL MP

Look beyond the misconceptions of apprenticeships FEBRUARY brought us another successful National Apprenticeships Week, where employers showcased the opportunities on offer for those looking for a route other than university to get into skilled work. In Westminster I had the privilege of attending the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Apprenticeships’ annual apprenticeships fair. Here the nation’s employers set out their stalls to show MPs what they were offering and allowed us to speak with apprentices. It was quite the delight to see people from all walks of life speak in such glowing terms about what the chance of learning new skills whilst earning a wage had done for them and the pride in their voices was unmistakeable. It was particularly memorable to meet with two apprenticeships from BAE Systems, a local employer, who have taken on over 800 apprentices this year. If you are

interested in such an opportunity, BAE Systems were still accepting applications until February 28 – for more information visit www. baesystems.com/en/careers/ careers-in-the-uk/apprenticeships/ schemes. We boast some of the finest universities in the world and should be proud of our academic credentials as a country. However, university doesn’t suit every person and it doesn’t suit every job. For those who want to get on in their lives without having to take three or more years out for university, apprenticeships offer the solution. Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has set out three goals he wants to achieve in the apprenticeship sphere under the theme “Look Beyond”. The aim is to challenge some of the misconceptions around apprenticeships; to tighten oversight of providers, and to encourage headteachers to

Myth 1: “Apprenticeships are only for young people.” Apprenticeships are for people of any age, the only requirements are the you are over the age of 16 and have the equivalent of at least five GCSEs grade A*- C. They are as useful a route for retraining later in life as they are for getting your first step on the job ladder out of school. Myth 2: “Apprenticeships aren’t as good as going to university.” Apprenticeships aren’t better or worse than going to university, they are just a different route. Apprenticeships offer qualifications at all levels up to and including post-graduate study which can earn you a full bachelor’s degree or even a master’s degree. Myth 3: “Apprenticeships are only for people wanting to work in manual jobs.” Apprenticeships are available in many jobs and industries ranging from nuclear

Jack Lopresti and defence to accounting and finance, to project management and administration. Whether you are interested in banking or fashion, there is likely an apprenticeship to suit you. Myth 4: “Apprentices can’t expect to earn a good wage.” All apprentices are paid at least the National Minimum Wage and will get the same rights as other employees, including paid holidays and sick pay. Apprentices are also paid their hourly wage whilst studying at college.

Eighty of the gardens hold national collections of plants. In 1948 the National Trust formed a partnership and places like Stourhead, Bodnant and Powis Castle joined the scheme. There are also 30 allotments in the scheme. If you would like to open your garden for the scheme, the county organiser will visit and look at your garden and talk over the conditions but, large or small, it doesn't matter. Over £22 million has been raised over the past few years. Isn't it wonderful what an hour or so of visiting a garden can achieve? The president since 2016 is Mary Berry and we were treated to slides of her garden and the wildlife garden created by David Moon, our speaker, with butterflies, birds, reptiles and a little mouse. We then heard about the mother of Horatio Chapple, who was killed by a polar bear: she raised money to provide gardens at the spinal units in this country. They are just working on the sixth one in Cardiff. What a wonderful legacy and courage from Horatio's mother. Our nearest and first is the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Garden in Ibstock, Salisbury. The photography was out of this world. a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The speaker we have visiting in March is Cyril Routley, who will be giving a talk titled I only count the Sunny Hours. We will hear about sun dials. We always welcome visitors to our meetings, so do come along. We meet on the second Thursday of the month, at 7.30pm at Lincombe Barn. Happy Gardening. D-day on takeaway bid A DECISION on whether to allow an empty charity shop in Staple Hill to be turned into a takeaway is expected this month. An application has been made to South Gloucestershire Council asking for permission to change the use of 121 High Street, the former Paws shop, into a takeaway and add an extractor flue at the back. The plans have upset locals who say there are already too many late-night eateries, fearing noise, litter and anti-social behaviour. Shop owner Erkan Cil told Downend Voice last month he planned to rent the premises out and said he was open to other types of businesses setting up there. The council had been due to make a decision by February 14; however the proposals have been now been referred to the authority's development management committee, which sits on March 5.

n RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Banana and Walnut Muffins Makes 12 ( or 14 depending on case size) with Mel of Melanie’s Kitchen I FOUND some frozen bananas in the freezer whilst looking for the peas, so decide to make a cake . Muffins are quick , easy, ready portioned and can be frozen so you don’t scoff the lot in one sitting ( could just be me I suppose!) These came from a 1996 cookbook where they are labelled as breakfast muffins – they are slightly healthier than the usual coffee shop offering as they have less sugar and the protein from the nuts will help fill you up for longer . Ours are now safely in the freezer where they can be taken out one at a time ! Will last a couple of days in a tin but really are best eaten slightly warm . You can substitute oat milk for cows milk if desired ,the original also uses pecans in place of walnuts and butter in place of oil ( equally as yummy if slightly less virtuous)

New energy group set up A GROUP has been set up aimed at encouraging people to work towards a zero-carbon lifestyle. The Greater Fishponds Energy Group (GFEG), covering Fishponds, Downend, Hillfields and Staple Hill, was established by a team of like-minded people who plan to offer projects, guidelines and activities to help the community contribute towards a low carbon economy. Founding members include people with expertise on low carbon architecture, renewable projects, environmental management and public engagement. The group says it has big plans for 2020 and wants to take on new members to help make a real difference to climate change. Jim Phillips, from GFEG Downend, said: “Downend has a range of housing and income types, but even those with newer or larger houses are probably using too much energy to heat them.” The group will be running a series of events throughout 2020 focused on practical steps people can take to improve the environment and reduce their carbon footprint. Topics include: • Effective heating in our homes - with a focus on retrofitting, insulation, low carbon heating and reducing fuel poverty • Community solar project - enabling members of the community to reduce solar panel (PV) installation costs

World day of prayer

• Hydro Energy Study - micro generation on the river Frome • Individual impact and how far it goes - why our daily habits count as a climate action • What can we do as a community to encourage local food production and reduce plastic waste • Green spaces – collaborating with other organisations to identify areas for tree planting and wildlife corridors to improve the local wellbeing, biodiversity and capture carbon. The group would love to hear from people from all backgrounds who would like to get onboard and support the group and its initiatives. They are also encouraging people with ideas to come forward to share them with members. FRENCHAY Parish Church will be among the thousands of churches throughout the world taking part in World Day of Prayer this month. The church will participate in a 36-hour wave of prayer on Friday March 6 that starts at dawn in Western Samoa and finishes at sunset in American Samoa on the same day. Each year women from a different country choose the songs and write the words for the service. The words are then translated in more than 60 languages and 1,000 dialects. In return, the prayers of worshippers throughout the world are focused on that country. This year it is the turn of Zimbabwe and the theme is “Rise! Take your mat and walk”. The service at Frenchay will start at 10am. Although it will be a Christian act of worship, anyone is welcome to attend.

n CHRISTINE'S COLUMN

n DOWNEND IN BLOOM

Busy time for woodworkers

I

I

T is nice to see all of the daffodils and crocuses coming up around the area, and the panolas are also starting to thrive in all this rain! The woodworking crew have been busy working on two interesting projects recently. The first of these was to make two bug houses, which will be sited in Leap Valley. These bug houses caused a lot of interest on our Facebook page, having almost 1,700 hits. It never ceases to amaze me what a powerful tool Facebook is to keep everyone informed of what we are doing as a group. The second project was a prayer tree for the bereavement group at Christ Church. They meet on the third Tuesday in the month at 2pm in the garden room (at the rear of the church). Their aim, as a group, is to bring people who are experiencing loss, eg bereavement or divorce, together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It could also be someone who has a loved one suffering from dementia. They are seeking to help and support each other on what is often a difficult journey. They meet and chat over tea/coffee and cake and are always happy for new people to join them. People write prayers and can then hang them on to the tree. Both projects were very diverse but very rewarding ventures to be involved in. Our continued thanks go to Dave, Terry, John, Clive and Denis for all their efforts in making these projects possible. Another exciting venture that we are looking into at the moment is working in conjunction with Downend School. We have started by renovating the school poly tunnel, which we are hoping to use for joint projects with some of the pupils. The only problem is that everyone is so enthusiastic about what we can potentially do, there may not be enough hours in our week for us to complete everything! We will keep you informed of progress. Finally, we have plans to streamline In Bloom meetings so that we have less time for business and more time for socialising! When we had a planning meeting recently we decided that meetings do sometimes run on a bit, so we have decided to trial putting together a brief newsletter to members in between meetings. This will enable everyone to keep up to date with what is happening and

Dave Baker and Val Henderson with the prayer tree made for the bereavement group at Christ Church we will not have to spend time doing this at the meetings. Obviously we will still have time for questions but we are hoping this will make things more streamlined. Anyone who would like to come along to any of our meetings to see what we do would be most welcome. We are a friendly bunch and are always looking for new people to contribute towards making our wonderful area the beautiful place it is to live. The Downend & Bromley Heath In Bloom Facebook page contains all the latest news and has dates of our meetings and events. Jackie Baker 07504 244361

T is 1.15am the morning of my left knee replacement. Nil by mouth. Six hours before arrival time at Emersons Green Treatment Centre. At 4.15am I have to take my morning tablets that I take regularly. Up until 4.30am I can drink only plain water, I don't know about you, but water makes me extremely hungry. I am not a bit tired so, I have come downstairs to write this... I wonder what the op will be like? Various people have told me reports about it. One of my friends even said she could hear the surgeon sawing the knee! I am not really nervous, I just wish the time would go that bit quicker. Another friend, Merle, a most kind lady who does a lot for Lincombe Barn, is not only going to look after Pepe, my Yorkie, but is going to come and take me to the hospital which is only a very short distance away by car and look after me too! Nearly a week later, and I am so relieved it’s over. When it came to it I was extremely anxious and cried before I had the spinal anaesthesia and the sedative but it was fear of the unknown, for in fact it was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I could actually hear what was going on! I did have some sedative but not much and I hardly knew I was having the spinal anaesthesia. I am so relieved to have had it done and now I have the support of family and friends. But it’s not over yet, now the work of exercise really begins. The first time I put my foot on the ground the day after the op the pain was excruciating but now I look forward to the adventure ahead! All being well I hope to see everyone at the Barn soon, Christine Broadway

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

‘Help, I need somebody’ MOST of us have cried out to God for help at some point in our lives. A recent survey suggested that over half of UK adults pray at least occasionally. Of those surveyed, many confessed to not being religious, but that didn’t stop them from crying out in hope or desperation when things got tough. Sometimes we simply get to the point where we can’t cope, a problem seems too big, and we need to look beyond ourselves for answers. The cry goes up of ‘Help’, even if we’re not sure who we’re crying out to, or whether there’s anyone listening. We’ve been thinking about prayer a lot at Christ Church this term, and doing it a lot as well. We’ve been exploring different ways to pray, shared stories about how prayers have been answered, and been real with one another about the times when they don’t appear to have been. We’ve learnt

from people who’ve prayed down the centuries, and seemed to have a really close relationship with God; and identified with Christians going through dark times when God has seemed distant. As a Minister, you’d think I would know a thing or two about prayer, but in reality much of prayer remains a mystery to me. I don’t always know what to pray, and not all of my prayers get answered in the way I’d like. Sometimes I pray for a situation to change, but actually it’s me who changes instead. On saying that, prayer is also a massive privilege – the opportunity to engage with the one I believe to be the creator of the universe - to share my deepest longings, to offer him my thanks and praise, to sit with him in silence and contemplation, to chew life over with him. Two hundred years ago a young man named Joseph Scriven

was growing up in Ireland. He was the son of a captain in the Royal Marines, trained as a teacher and fell in love. Sadly on the eve of his wedding, his fiancee drowned. Distraught he moved to Canada, where before too long he fell in love with Eliza Rice, with plans to get married. Tragedy struck a second time, when Eliza fell sick and died. A heartbroken Scriven turned to the one thing that had been constant for him - his Christian faith. When his mother back in Ireland fell ill he couldn’t afford to go and visit her, but he wrote a poem and sent it to her. This poem was picked up by one of his friends and set to music. It became one of the great hymns of the Christian faith. The first verse reads like this: ‘What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit,

With

Paul Peterson Associate Minister Christ Church Downend O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer!’ If you don’t already pray, why not try it some time – you might just find out the truth of this hymn and the power of prayer in your life.

Opening shots THE first competition of 2020 that took place at the end of January provided more evidence of the broad range of photographic interests and imagination in the club. It also confirmed why these evenings are such an important part of the programme, for it is learning what works and what doesn’t that helps members improve their photography skills. At least, that’s the theory! Those judged to be the top three in the digital image competition are shown here. A beautiful beach in Bude has a

figures of people on the extreme right giving a sense of scale. Surf Academy came second; another image with striking combinations of composition and colour (blue and yellow as a colour combination seems to work well in photographs). The elliptical vehicle marks in the sand make the shot – without them, it would be far less interesting. Third place was taken by The Jacobite, a classic image of the train steaming across the Glenfinnan viaduct on the West Highland line in Scotland. As well as the image itself, what is impressive is the effort involved in getting it – studying the train timetable, getting to the location in time, finding the right spot to plant the tripod, and waiting patiently, probably in the cold. There was some discussion as to whether the train was in exactly the right place – the kind of debate that

gets photo enthusiasts strangely excited… Downend Camera Club is a friendly group who meet on Tuesdays at 7.30 pm at the Assembly Hall, Salisbury Road, Downend. Anyone interested in the art of photography is very welcome to come along and see our relaxed and informal approach. Unusually for a photo club, we meet almost every week of the year and initial meetings are free, with no obligation to join. ■ WILL & PROBATE ADVICE

Simpson Solicitors - keeping it local MOST of us value being able to shop locally and having a good range of shops. However, with banks closing and big brands closing local stores what is available locally is changing. Going against this trend is Simpson Solicitors. Run by husband and wife team of John and Michelle Baden-Daintree, they have invested in improving their local facilities in Kings Chase Shopping Centre in Kingswood to serve the surrounding area. John spells out why local is important to Simpsons “Everyone’s situation is different and so we think it is important that people can meet their legal advisor locally - face to face so all their questions are answered. With many legal companies now expecting clients to follow complex online form filling – we do not! Our focus is on making it easy for our clients. With local meetings about

Wills and Powers of Attorney with a fully regulated and trained legal advisor. I believe this is the best way to receive great quality legal advice.” As local shopping centres and high streets change, there is a move to create a better experience when shopping locally. So there are now more cafes and health and beauty treatment providers along-side traditional shops. Simpson Solicitors are part of this move to provide a better local experience. So instead of intimidating offices, they have gone for welcoming receptions that people feel able to pop into. They will be greeted and made to feel at ease by friendly staff whose mission it is to make everyone feel “Welcome, Wanted and Cared For”. If you have any worries or questions about Wills and related matters, Simpson Solicitors invite you to pop into their Kings Chase Shopping Centre offices with its ground floor meeting rooms.

As part of offering a better legal local experience, Simpsons do not charge anything for that first advice meeting. “We think it is important to understand each client’s particular situation, so that we can give them tailored advice. For that reason we do not charge for our first meeting. Also we do not set a time limit on the complimentary meeting. We will take as long as the client needs – without the fear of being charged by the minute and with no “hard sell”. Then if the client wishes to use our services we offer clear fixed prices.” Simpsons also make a point of supporting other local businesses too. Using local shops and businesses can make a big difference to the local economy and help make Kingswood a better place to live, work and visit. “Local independent businesses need to support each other – so we always try to use local companies and encourage our clients to use them too”, says Michelle.

Concert for Ryan MUSICIAN Ryan Price, who died last year aged 91, will be remembered at a concert this month. Ryan was born and grew up in South Wales and moved to Mangotsfield in the early 1960s. A church bellringer, he used the handbells belonging to St James church in Mangotsfield to start a family team. With the formation of the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain in 1967, they became nationally known and loved. Ryan attended international events in Japan and South Korea and composed original music for handbells, some of which can be heard at the concert at Christ Church, Downend, on Saturday March 28, starting at 7.30pm. Money raised will go to the Cre800 appeal for St James, where Ryan worshipped.

£700 fine for dumping waste A MAN has been ordered to pay more than £700 after a toilet, plasterboard and several bags of rubbish were found dumped in a lane near Emersons Green. The waste was traced back to Ashley Wise by South Gloucestershire Council’s environmental protection team after it was found in Cattybrook Road North, Shortwood, last summer. The council had to send a team to clear the rubbish and officers found evidence linking it to the 29 year old’s home address in Crome Road, Lockleaze. They visited his house and left a contact card after getting no reply. Wise then called the council, claiming that about a week earlier, two men with a van had 'cold called' at his address, having spotted the waste in his front garden. He admitted the waste was his and said he had agreed a price of £50 with the men to get rid of it.

The rubbish dumped in Cattybrook Road North But Wise was unable to provide any details of the men, their van, a phone number or a receipt for the waste removal. Appearing at Bristol Magistrates Court in January, Wise pleaded guilty to failing in his duty of care for the secure transfer of household waste and was fined £100, along with £574 in costs and a victim surcharge of £30. Council cabinet member for communities Rachael Hunt said: “Fly-tipping is completely unacceptable. It has a negative impact on our communities and local environment and we all have a responsibility to make sure that our waste is disposed of in the appropriate manner.

“Our zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping in South Gloucestershire means that anyone who fly-tips here is up to five times more likely to be prosecuted than anywhere else in the country. “Our award winning envirocrime team has a 100 per cent record of securing successful prosecutions for this type of offence, so if you fail in your duty of care and allow rubbish to be fly-tipped in South Gloucestershire, you can expect to be caught and prosecuted.” Residents and businesses are being advised to only give their rubbish to an Environment Agency registered waste carrier, ask for a copy of the company’s waste carrier registration certificate and ask where the waste is being taken. People are also being advised not to use people offering cheap waste clearance on sites such as Facebook and Gumtree unless they are registered with the Environment Agency Check whether the waste carrier is registered by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 or by checking on their website. Residents who see illegal fly-tipping are encouraged to report via the council website, by emailing streetcare@southglos. gov.uk or contacting the Street Care help desk on 01454 868000.

Accessible club helps young players enjoy football

A FOOTBALL club based at Frenchay is helping young players with physical, sensory or learning disabilities to enjoy playing the game. Rockleaze Rangers is one of the biggest grassroots clubs in Bristol, running junior teams from under-6 to under-18 and has five senior teams up to Gloucestershire County League level. Based at the University of the West of England Hillside Sports Ground in Frenchay since last season, the club is now hosting a weekly session for children aged 8-16 with disabilities, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm every Wednesday. Rockleaze Inclusive Coach Ian Louden said: “In the years before the move to Hillside, a number of the coaches recognised that some children struggled to cope in a 'mainstream' group for a number of different reasons. “The success of the move to Hillside and the fantastic facilities available there led the

Members of the Rockleaze Rangers group for children with physical, sensory or learning disabilities during a session at the University of the West of England Hillside Sports Ground in Frenchay club to look into the possibility of providing football opportunities for children who found it difficult to fit into the club's regular training groups. “With help from Jason Lee at the Gloucestershire Football Association and Kris Taverner / Ian Blundell at Bristol Bears

Community Sport, Rockleaze took over responsibility for a small existing group for children with a physical, sensory or learning difficulty that was being run by Bristol Bears.” The group has a coaching team of two Rockleaze coaches plus two UWE students.

Ian said: “The sessions are about providing a fun and supportive social environment for the children and giving them a sense of 'belonging' within the club. The children in the group love the facilities (a 4G pitch and proper goals) and the sociability of the group.” The group currently has around 12 regular players, aged from around 10 to 15, mostly from North and East Bristol, although some come from as far away as Portishead to take part. The club has space and resources to grow the size of the group and provide more boys and girls with the chance to play and have fun. Any child from 8 to 16 years old with a physical, sensory or learning difficulty is welcome to come along to the Wednesday session. n SPORT YOUNG footballers in the Downend Flyers Girls Under-10 and 11 squads took inspiration from a surprise visit by two rising stars from the Bristol City Women squad. Ebony Salmon and Jess Woolley were waiting for them on the training pitch ready to take part in their weekly training session on a wet and windy Thursday evening. The evening was informal and started off with Ebony and Jess participating in a Q&A session for the 40 girls. They were asked questions including what it was like to be a female professional footballer which teams they supported. Both Ebony and Jess then joined in with the planned training session for the under 11 squads, working with the coaches to help the girls and then joining in at the end-of-session mini match. There were even some TikTok videos being made! The evening will have a lasting impression on the girls that took part. One said afterwards: “I cant believe we’ve actually had Ebony and Jess come along to our training session. I want to be like them when I get older and play

Boxing girls lose to split decisions DOWNEND Boxing Club’s girls were on the wrong end of some split decisions despite some superb performances at an international tournament in Sweden. First up at the Golden Girl Championship, from January 31 to February 2, was 14-yearold Alexa Smith, against Thareya Pederson of team Norway. Alexa gave away a significant height deficit against the classy counterpunching Norwegian boxer. Despite a determined effort from Alexa, the experience and height of Pederson paid off with a points decision. Up next was Eloise Edwards, also 14, who met former National champion Lilly-May Underwood, of Kent. What followed was a superb exhibition of skill by both girls, exhibiting counter punching well above their experience level. After a nip-and-tuck affair, the Downend boxer dropped a 3-2 judges decision. There was further disappointment when Jodie Horton, 23, met Weston-super-Mare's Hannah Windsor, despite both girls having travelled to Sweden to box Scandinavian opposition. The contest was exciting from the word go, with Hannah starting quickly and taking the first round, but the second

Quarry Court

and third saw the Weston girl fade and clean shots coupled with a strong finish seemed to have Jodie in front at the last bell. The judges didn't agree, however, and gave the contest to Hannah by a 3-2 split decision. A similar fate befell 16-year-old Morgan Baber, who met another Norwegian in Ingela Eikrem. Morgan went for the taller girl from first bell to last, scoring heavily at short range and pushing the Norwegian onto the back foot. At the end of the contest, everyone present was amazed to see Eikrem's hand raised, by 3-2 split decision.

Team manager Jo Turner said: “The ladies conducted themselves superbly in all but one boxer’s first International outing. “The performances were mature, and they all boxed to orders from coach and professional boxer Ben Demmery. “Things look very positive for the future.” A busy month saw the ladies join a representative team as Broad Plain and Downend played host to County Mayo's boxing team from Ireland. Downend boxers won six of their nine contests, with the results as follows (Downend boxers listed first): • Rocky Barney lost pts Thomas Richardson • Shaye Pinnell lost pts James Ivers • Eloise Edwards won pts Hope Gallagher • Alexa Smith won pts Leah Neary • Jay Holloway won pts Jason Butler • Morgan Baber won pts Leah McDonough • Jodie Horton lost pts Louise Walsh • Taylor Andrews won pts Mark Rattigan • Shiraz Amin won pts Mark Harding Head coach Craig Turner said: “I am really pleased with the guys' performances. Our thanks must go to the wonderful Mayo team coaches, and Dennis Stinchcombe MBE and his team at Broad Plain.”

Turmoil at Mangotsfield Utd as manager Price quits MANGOTSFIELD United have been thrown into turmoil following the recent resignation of manager Ollie Price. A 3-3 home draw v Slimbridge and then a 2-1 away loss at Larkhall Athletic in late January were completely overshadowed by the events of February 1, as the team prepared to face Evesham United at Cossham Street. Just 90 minutes before the match manager Ollie Price resigned, along with his dug-out team, at the prospect of a further cut to an already-low playing budget. His resignation statement, issued immediately on Twitter, said his position had “become untenable”. Ollie said: “I am a man of principle and have set standards that I work to achieve. Throughout my time as MUFC manager, I have faced many challenges, all of which up to now I’ve taken in my stride. However, it’s got to the point

Town, the few remaining first team players, including keeper Marko Radovanovic, were joined by a number of inexperienced debutants from the club’s youth team and put up a spirited performance, only losing 2-1. Three nights later, at Portsmouth-based Moneyfields, Mangotsfield fielded an even younger starting XI and succumbed to defeat by the only goal in the 50th minute, despite creating a number of decent chances of their own. Mangotsfield’s overall future remained unclear as the Voice went to print. The immediate task is to fulfil all league fixtures. To the people of Mangotsfield, your presence at any of our next home games would be very much appreciated. Support your local club! Next home games: March 7, 3pm: Thatcham Town. language in the first half told a million stories and they trailed 0-2 at half-time but really perked up after the break and got back to 3-3, before two late Evesham goals killed them off. The result barely mattered, given the wider picture, but the fact that the players still played for the club when they could easily have all walked out before 3pm stood them in good stead with the supporters. In the days that followed, with most of the players having already left, speculation about the future of the club grew all the time, as the club’s financial situation was aired in public. It wasn’t just about who would replace Ollie Price; it was all about could the club continue in the Southern League, voluntarily return to the Western League or was the club in danger of folding. Chairman Mike Richardson announced that youth team boss Glyn Ashton had also become the new first team manager. For the trip to Basingstoke
