Introducing the Men in Sheds group

Hurtling down slopes on a teatray? Think I'll stick to growing flowers

MEN

SHEDS

DOWNEND Men in Sheds began as part in of Downend in Bloom and has now developed into a fully fledged group based on the UK network. At the end of 2017 the group, with the help of Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council, drafted a new constitution; this enabled DB&H to make a generous grant to provide funding for insurance and other set-up materials. The group meets up at King George V playing field pavilion at 9.30am until about 12.30pm every Tuesday. New membership is open to anyone. Work will include making planters, bird and bat houses, and other items to be sold to raise money for DIB at fetes and fairs. For those of you that have seen the flowers in the area I think you will agree it is a worthy cause. We are currently involved in making a large round planter for the trees in Downend which is quite labour intensive, so any extra help would be useful. We will also start a project soon to create a community garden at Bromley park, as well as making smaller items for DIB to sell at fairs. We have all necessary insurance and safety equipment and tools so please feel free to at least visit us. You might even get a coffee/tea and a biscuit. Our overall aim is to make Downend with the help of DIB a really great place to live. John Lockwood

MY apologies but I think this month’s article might be more about the Winter Olympics than about the flowers! The weather outside is cold,IN wetBLOOM and windy so I DOWNEND am glued to the wonderful antics of these athletes, especially the super snowboarders. It took me back to watching our local heroine, Jenny Jones, in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. I was talking to someone recently, who lives in Downend, and they had never heard of Jenny. If people do not know the story, she is a local girl who won an Olympic bronze medal - Britain’s first Olympic medal ever in a snow sport. What an achievement for our little village of Downend and something we should be very proud of. Perhaps I should mention the flowers briefly! The yellow crocus at the end of Cleeve Park Road are in full bloom and looking fabulous and the daffodil bulbs are nearly, nearly there. Oh, my goodness me!! The ice hockey is in full swing and the ladies are literally ploughing into each other - who said ladies were the weaker sex? - think they should watch this! Back to the flowers - a few

News?

DOWNEND IN BLOOM weeks ago I was asked to give a talk to the Downend Willow Ladies Club about in Bloom. They meet on a Tuesday morning in the Assembly Rooms on Salisbury Road. They are a very friendly group and I am sure would welcome new members, especially, I think, anyone who could come forward and maybe help organise. I think this is often the case with groups and sometimes they are unable to keep running as there are not enough people to help in leading them - it is a great shame. I would also like to thank them for their donation to D&BH in Bloom and assure them the money will be well spent on our summer displays. Well, I think the final word must go to the Olympics - there are now strange people hurtling down some ice on a tin tray Is it called luge or something. Bring it on, as they say!
