RESIDENTS of a busy Staple Hill road have condemned the recommendation to permanently close two nearby streets as "undemocratic" and a "farce". South Gloucestershire Council shut Charnell Road and Signal Road, off Teewell Hill, to through traffic last year on a temporary basis, saying the move would help encourage walking and cycling on the nearby Bristol

Road closures undemocractic, say residents and Bath Railway Path during the Covid lockdown. After an online consultation, which ended in February, the roads stayed shut as the council considered their future. Last month residents of Charnell Road and Signal Road were sent letters telling them council officers were

recommending the scheme be made permanent. But people living in other streets nearby say the council has disregarded their opposition, instead basing its decision only on the views of people who live in the two roads. Residents of Teewell Hill, Turn to Page 2

Anger over road closure 'farce' From Page 1 Teewell Avenue and Lydney Road say the closure has funnelled more traffic through their streets, and are calling on the council to re-think the move. Neighbourhood campaigner Chris Evans, who raised a petition of more than 130 signatures against the closures last year, said the council's own consultation results showed that, while Charnell Road and Signal Road residents supported them, the majority of people who responded to the consultation did not. She said the petition and other letters of opposition had "all been ignored" and the process was "undemocratic". Teewell Hill resident Lindsay Harris said: "In order to make the results more favourable, the responses from anybody except the residents of the closed roads were simply disregarded." Another Teewell Hill resident, Faye Galvin, said: "There is no evidence that the scheme has met its aims (reducing traffic and making it safer for cyclists) indeed, the council had no stats or figures for the situation before and have done no monitoring during the 'temporary' closures. "Teewell Hill has become much busier. There have been daily near misses as lorries and cars mount the pavement to squeeze past traffic speeding up the hill to beat the lights. "This has just moved the problem, not solved it. "It's a farce that the views of the people in the roads in question are taking precedence over a democratic consultation." Peter Gomm described the decision as an "absolute disgrace" and said he and fellow Teewell Hill residents were being treated in a "shambolic way". Juliet Kaszubowski said she regularly had abuse from other motorists as she tried to get on and off her own drive in Teewell Hill. A decision on whether to make the closure permanent was due to be made by the council's director of environment and community services, Nigel Riglar, whose department produced the recommendation. The move has been welcomed by residents of Charnhill Drive,

which connects to Signal Road. Ray Isaac said traffic on the road had been "terrible" before the closure, with drivers "belting along" it at speed to avoid the traffic lights at the top of Teewell Hill. He said the road was now only used by people living or visiting homes there and said: "The benefit has been tremendous." A council spokesperson said: "No decision has been made on whether the measures will be made permanent at this stage. "An officer report and recommendation will be prepared, which will take into account the comments and feedback received from in and around the area; this will help our director to make an informed decision in partnership with the relevant cabinet member. "We expect a decision in Autumn 2021. "A recommendation will be made by officers and a decision will be made by the director, in partnership with the relevant cabinet member. "All petitions submitted to us are considered in line with our official policy and are taken into account as part of the decision making process." Staple Hill & Mangotsfield ward councillor Ian Boulton said: “I am disappointed that the result of the consultation has been spun to incorrectly suggest that the majority of respondents are in favour of the changes being made permanent. "I am also disappointed that no effort has been made to address the genuine concerns that people have raised as part of the consultation process”. • Teewell Hill is set to be closed for three weeks at its junctions with Broad Street and Teewell Avenue while work to upgrade the gas main to carry hydrogen and biomethane is carried out. Wales & West Utilities said work would start on September 27 and finish by October 17 and a diversion route will be "clearly signposted". Programme controller Mick Gallavin said: "We appreciate that working on roads such as these is not ideal, and we’re trying to keep disruption to a minimum."

Michael meets his Hollywood hero A DOWNEND film fan was left lost for words and in tears when he met his idol, Hollywood A-lister Christopher Walken. The Oscar-winning star has been filming in Bristol for a BBC TV series, The Offenders, which has taken him to locations including the Vassall Centre and Oldbury Court Inn in Fishponds. A shoot in Shirehampton gave Michael Riley, who has been a huge Walken fan for 40 years, the chance to finally meet the star of more than 100 movies, including The Deer Hunter – which won him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar – Pulp Fiction and A View to a Kill. Michael runs a Facebook group for fans of the actor and hadw been asking people to keep an eye on reports of where filming was taking place. He received a tip-off from group member Angela Welling that the crew had set up in Shirehampton and his friend Dean McKenzie drove him to the set. They took a greetings card and a bottle of Jim Beam whiskey, which Michael knew Walken drinks. When they arrived they had a short negotiation with the security team, who took the card and showed it to director Stephen

Michael Riley can't control his emotions as he meets his hero Christopher Walken Merchant, the Hanham-born comedian and actor. Michael said: "I saw Stephen Merchant reading the card and he looked over to me and gave the thumbs-up. "Within moments I'd met my hero. He was walking closer and closer and my emotions overwhelmed me. I just burst out crying, like a baby. "He was very friendly – he came up to me and did a fist-bump and stood next to me." Michael said he was crying in all of the pictures taken of the meeting and didn't manage to say anything except to remind Walken to take the whiskey with him. He said: "It happened so quickly and because I was crying, I couldn't get a hold of

myself and find the words to talk to him." Michael, who runs the joint Christopher Walken and Bryan Ferry Facebook group with fellow fans Caroline Robinson and Vicki Quarant, has been a fan of Walken since he saw the 1983 sci-fi thriller Brainstorm. He says he finds Walken's style of acting always "true to life" and believable, regardless of the role or type of film. Michael has more than 100 of his films on DVD but says he would probably never have had the chance to meet the star had he not been filming in Bristol. He said: "I would do it again if I had the chance – probably without the crying!" The Offenders is described as "part crime thriller, and part character study – with humour and heart" and also includes Merchant, Richard E Grant, EastEnders' Clare Perkins and Poldark's Eleanor Tomlinson among the cast. The story follows seven strangers from different walks of life forced together to complete a Community Payback sentence in Bristol. Merchant said: "This is the first series I’ve made in my home town of Bristol and I’m so excited to showcase the city and utilise the amazing local talent."

Fountain Square fun day could be first of many A FAMILY fun day organised by Staple Hill traders could be the first of many at Fountain Square. The four-hour event on August 21 attracted hundreds of visitors and ten stalls, set up by traders and charities. It followed a frustrating summer, during which the first two dates planned for events in the square, in June and July, had to be cancelled because of a single objection to Staple Hill Chamber of Trade's licence application. The fun day saw visitors of all ages entertained with music and dance sessions, funfair games, a silent disco and stalls selling food and gifts. There was also a fundraising raffle and stalls promoting charities, including the Staple

Hill & District branch of the Royal British Legion. Heavy rain before the event had threatened to wash it out

but organiser Melody Beard, of the Bean Tree Cafe in Page Park, said everyone involved decided to take a chance and push ahead. Melody said: "There have been so many events cancelled this year, and after all the waiting and generating so much momentum, it was nice to finally fulfil it. "It was busy and people seemed to enjoy it – the sun came out and people were dancing. The traders did well and it was nice to have live music again." The idea of the monthly events is to bring more people into Staple Hill's shopping area and Melody said the fun day had attracted visitors from other areas. She said people had wanted to see more events happen, and the traders are set to form a committee to plan them. One event which is

definitely on the calendar is the popular Christmas on the Hill celebration, which is due to make a comeback on the first weekend in December. Before that residents are being told to keep a lookout for street art appearing from September, as well as the launch of the area's 'storywalk' audiovisual project. The traders had to wait until the end of July for South Gloucestershire Council's licensing sub-committee to approve their licence to hold events in the square, between 9am and 6pm on Saturdays, following one objection over potential parking and litter problems. Staple Hill & Mangotsfield ward councillor Ian Boulton told the committee the level of backing from residents and businesses had been "quite aweinspiring".

Bin collection delays BIN collections in the Downend area are being hit by a staff shortage because of Covid isolation, summer holidays and driver shortages. South Gloucestershire Council warned residents of delays but is urging everyone to continue putting out their waste and sorting their recycling as normal. On August 12 the council reported that it had not been able to complete some collections in Downend, Mangotsfield, Pucklechurch, Emersons Green, Wick and Siston. Residents were being urged to leave the items out as crews would return as soon as possible. A council spokesperson said: “Like many authorities and waste contractors, Suez is currently experiencing staff shortages due to national driver issues, Covid isolation and annual leave. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused." People were being encouraged to report missed collections the day after they were due, online at www.southglos.gov.uk/reportit or by calling 01454 868000.

n NEWS A STREET market could come to Downend after the idea won support in a public survey. Ward councillors are calling on South Gloucestershire Council to explore the possibility of introducing outdoor events, including a market, in the high street area after the idea of introducing street stalls was backed by 95% of respondents. More than 800 people responded to the questionnaire on facilities and future improvements between March and April this year. It found that most people who visited the high street area did so at least once a week, and almost eight out of ten made at least some of their journeys on foot. Shopping was by far the most popular reason to visit, with 94% of respondents using the area's shops, 96% wanting more independent shops and 91% keen to see a wider range of shops. People also wanted to see improvements to the environment, with 80% wanting more trees, plants, or green space and 72% keen to see paving improved. Smaller numbers (28% and

Market plan for Downend

Frenchay & Downend ward councillors James Griffiths, Liz Brennan and Ben Burton in the high street 30% respectively) called for improvements to cycle parking and bus stops. People also wanted to see Wi-Fi in public areas, which was backed by 66% of respondents, and more click and collect facilities, supported by 65%. Just under half of respondents (47%) supported live entertainment events. Frenchay & Downend ward councillors Liz Brennan, Ben Burton and James Griffiths are

encouraging business owners or managers interested in getting involved with a market to register an interest by emailing liz.brennan@southglos.gov.uk. They said: "Having campaigned for the creation of a market in Downend, we are really pleased that the public share our vision, having supported the idea in their hundreds through the survey. "It’s clear that it is something local people want and has the

potential to be a great attraction for local businesses, new vendors and visitors alike, supporting shops on our high street with new footfall and creating a fun new attraction for the community. “With the council working to form a High Street and Cleeve Wood support group, we are keen to make sure that any and all traders who want to be a part are given the chance, and would ask that they contact us to find out how they can get involved.” *Contractors were expected to fit Downend's CCTV cameras by the end of August. Poles were installed earlier in the summer and the system was due to be up and running by July but the council said there had been "a slight delay in the programme of work caused by a high demand for their services". A council spokesperson apologised for any inconvenience caused by the delay.

Vaccine team celebrates 50,000 jabs A DOWNEND-based Covid-19 vaccination centre has celebrated delivering its 50,000th jab to members of the community. The team based at Christchurch Family Medical Centre is managed by the Network 4 Primary Care Network, including Downend Health Group (Christchurch and Willow surgeries), Green Valleys Health (Leap Valley and Emersons Green), Three Shires Medical Practice, which includes Pucklechurch, and Orchard Medical Centre in Kingswood. The vaccination centre in the former Boots pharmacy next to Christchurch Family Medical Centre on North Street has been operating constantly since the first delivery of Pfizer vaccine last December and delivered its 50,000th jab in August. Most vaccinations have been provided in the centre, although a small number have been administered in care homes and at the homes of patients unable to go out. GP based centres, which contact patients to offer a jab, have been operating in tandem with the mass vaccination centres which have been giving jabs to people booking via the NHS website. Some 86% of the primary care network (PCN)’s patients have received one dose and 77% have received two doses of vaccine. For the over-50s the

the PCN held a celebratory event in August to say thank you to all of those involved, with food and drink from the Staple Hill-based Los Hermanos food truck and a specially-made cake from Piece of Cake bakery in North Street. Network 4 PCN clinical director Richard Berkley said: "I have been amazed and humbled by the sheer generosity of people giving up their time to achieve this momentous task. "Vaccination remains the cornerstone to us getting our lives back. "All our health services are under such pressure at the moment, yet people still manage to give even more. "I am so grateful to them all. We have also learned how working together in a group of surgeries can help, and we hope to continue to join forces together and bring new services like this in the future."

Staff and volunteers with the Downend-based vaccination team celebrate at Christ Church percentages are 94% and 92% respectively and for the over-80s and care home residents, 99% and 98%. The centre recently started to vaccinate 16 and 17-year-old patients of local surgeries and will continue to operate at North Street to offer booster doses and some flu vaccinations to eligible patients throughout the autumn. Initially made up of nurses, doctors, managers and admin staff from the surgeries, the vaccination centre has since recruited a large number of new staff and volunteers, including many who have come out of retirement to help with the vaccination effort.

More than 8,000 hours in total have been worked by staff and volunteers in the centre since it opened. To celebrate the milestone

Covid toll in care homes FIGURES released by the care homes regulator have revealed the toll of coronavirus on individual care homes. The Care Quality Commission says a total of 191 people died with Covid-19 in care homes in South Gloucestershire between March last year and the beginning of April this year. In the Downend area, a total of nine residents of Gracefields Nursing Home North Street died with the virus. Eight residents of Avonmere Care Home in Badminton Road and two residents of the Manor Cottage in Frenchay also died with Covid-19, the CQC said. A total of 31 homes in South Gloucestershire lost residents to the virus. Publishing the information, the CQC said: "The impact of the pandemic on people who draw on and work in adult social care services has been devastating and, despite the best efforts of staff, Covid-19 has contributed to a significant increase in the number of deaths in nursing and residential care settings. "It is important to note that death notifications do not in themselves indicate poor quality care Moreover, many notifications relate to the deaths of care home residents which occurred in other care settings."

’ve worn glasses all of my adult life, in fact since my mid teens. Seeing clearly is easily taken for granted, probably the expected norm for most of us in fact. The work we do and the patients we have the pleasure of looking after, help us stay very grateful for the vision we have, particularly as we’re often trying to help those whose vision is not what it used to be. The glasses that I need to wear to see the world clearly, are definitely as much of my wardrobe as anything else I wear. I appreciate I’m in the privileged position of having studied glasses design, manufacture and dispensing far more than most. This insight does mean I’m under more than just a little pressure in choosing my own glasses! The look as well as functionality really does have to be just right. I’m sure you’ll be reassured that my decision making is spot on (well usually, & I’m definitely not admitting otherwise!) It’ll probably be no surprise to you that on a recent trip to London, on our staycation trip this summer, the walking route we took around the sights of London just happened to take us past the Covent Garden store of Tom Davies. I’ve spoken about Tom a few times. I’ll make no excuses for writing about his eye for design again. They are without doubt the most stylish & comfortable glasses I own and have ever tried. Considering the hours I spend at manufacturing exhibitions trying on glasses this is saying something! Whether you’re looking for new glasses or sunglasses right now, or over the next few months, you really should take a look at our latest designs from Tom Davies. One of our new collections contains a pair of sunglasses called ‘Rock Star’. Originally designed as sunglasses for British band Muse’s lead singer, Matt Bellamy, the collection has expanded. One of many things I admire about Tom Davies is his ability to not only design beautiful glasses, but to also manufacture them in London too! When it comes to your eyes, our vision is that each of you receives world class eye care, which we firmly believe you deserve. Don’t forget, whether it’s for reassuringly thorough eye care, or for glasses to make you look like a rock star, we’re here when you need us, six days per week. Just get in touch and we’ll be happy to see how we can help you. We continue to offer COVID safe ways to choose your new glasses too! To help us keep you all safe, we’re still asking you all to telephone first to book a time to come in. Please call our Henleaze practice on 0117 962 2474 or our Fishponds practice on 0117 965 4434.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

The new mural

Inkie at work in Stanbridge school hall

Inkie makes his mark at Stanbridge ONE of Bristol's most renowned street artists has created a mural for a Downend primary school. Inkie has been a key figure in the city's graffiti scene since the 1980s, has worked alongside Banksy and Massive Attack's 3D and is a curator of street art festival Upfest. He has exhibited in America and designed video games, but his latest project is to turn Stanbridge Primary School's motto - "Be

brave not perfect" - into a mural on a wall in the school hall. Head teacher Kirby Littlewood said: "Our motto is so important for children (and adults) in a 21st century world – we want our whole community to be able to see the value in making brave and bold decisions, and that there is no such thing as perfection. "We are all striving for different aims and face different challenges. We don’t always

need to win or to be the best, but pushing past our comfort zone and ensuring we give things a go, and value the effort rather than compare ourselves to unrealistic goals, is the important thing to protect both our mental and physical well-being." The school is planning to work with Inkie – real name Tom Bingle – again in the future, along with other street artists, to enhance areas of its curriculum.

n NEWS Ring road speed crackdown POLICE say they have been targeting speeding and antisocial driving on the Avon Ring Road. Neighbourhood and road policing teams have been working together to carry out patrols on the A4174 and around the Longwell Green shops and leisure park over the summer. A police spokesperson said officers seized one vehicle for having no tax or insurance, clocked a motorcyclist travelling at 100mph and caught a driver using a mobile phone at the wheel, who now faces a £200 fine and six points on their licence. They have also issued traffic offence reports, which can lead to court action, against motorists with unlawful modifications on their vehicles and warned some drivers their cars could be seized if they're found driving in an anti-social manner again. Police say the patrols will continue.

No change at Hambrook lights CHANGES to the Hambrook traffic lights which were introduced two years ago are to remain in place for some time to come. South Gloucestershire Council was told by the government to cut levels of toxic nitrogen dioxide at the junction of the A4174 Avon Ring Road and the B4058 Bristol Road. In August 2019 it used powers known as an experimental traffic order to stop vehicles coming from the Bromley Heath roundabout from turning right towards Winterbourne, sending them around the nearby M32 roundabout instead, and also removed a bus lane and made access from Frenchay a left-turn only. The changes were supposed to be tried for up to 18 months to see if air quality improved. But because the coronavirus lockdown reduced all traffic levels, the Government has told the council to continue monitoring air pollution at the site while motorists return to previous habits following the lifting of restrictions. The council has not given any indication of how long the layout changes will be kept in place. A spokesperson said: "Traffic patterns were significantly disrupted by the various lockdown periods and the Government recognises that 2020/21 monitoring results can’t be used to assess the impact of the changes. Now this has been clarified, we can look to agree the future format of the scheme and will provide further information on the next steps, including public consultation, when this has been done." • A public consultation on changes to five roundabouts on the A4174 designed to increase traffic flows has closed. The £30 million scheme would see new lanes built across the middle of three roundabouts – Siston Hill, Deanery Road near Warmley and Kingsfield, at Longwell Green – and extra lanes added to the Lyde Green and Rosary roundabouts at Emersons Green.

Woman attacked with bottle A WOMAN had to be taken to hospital after she was hit on the head with a bottle and robbed of her phone in Downend. The attack happened near Mangotsfield Cemetery in Westerleigh Road, at about 10.15pm on August 14. Avon and Somerset police said the woman, who is in her 30s, was hit from behind by an unknown man who then tried to snatch her mobile phone. After a short struggle the robber, who was wearing a black hooded top and blue face mask, made off with the phone, a Samsung Galaxy S10. The woman suffered a cut to her head and was taken to hospital. Witnesses who have not yet contacted the police can call 101 and should quote crime reference number 5221 186 990. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A DOWNEND school is launching its 50th anniversary celebrations this month, after having to delay them because of the pandemic. St Augustine's Catholic Primary School opened its doors to pupils in September 1970, having had its foundation stone laid the previous December. The half-century celebrations were originally scheduled for 2020 but had to be postponed because of covid restrictions. Now the school has announced plans to enable children, staff, parents and the rest of the community to mark the landmark anniversary with some special events. First up is a visit from Happy's Circus on September 22, which has been organised by the school's parents, teachers and friends association. Gates open from 4pm and the circus will perform two shows, at 4.30pm and 6.30pm. All are welcome to attend the shows and tickets can be bought online at www.pta-events.co.uk/ ptfastaugustinedownend, where more details can be found.

n NEWS A MANGOTSFIELD teenager whose dad was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer has had her head shaved to raise money for charity. Madison Long, 16, had her flowing locks removed live on Facebook and Instagram, and is donating them to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer or other conditions. Maddy, who is about to start sixth form at St Brendan's College, also decided to collect donations for Macmillan Cancer Support through a fundraising page and had raised more than £1,000 as the Voice went to print. Last month the Voice reported that Maddy's dad Rich, 49, a wing commander in the RAF, had undergone surgery to remove his prostate after being diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. Rich, who has been recovering since the surgery last October, staged an eight-hour 'yogathon' in Page Park in July to raise awareness of the risks of the disease and raised £1,600 for charity Cancer Research. Maddy said other people had not been as lucky as her dad and she wanted to do something to help them. She said: "I have been growing my hair for years in order to donate it, and I thought I would go all the way and shave it off to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support as well. n NEWS PEOPLE with minor illnesses are going to hospital accident and emergency departments because they cannot get an appointment with their GP, it has been claimed. South Gloucestershire Council’s health scrutiny commission heard some residents were calling their surgery for an appointment, only to be told they were number 100 in the queue. The organisation which funds GP surgeries said work was being done to tackle staffing shortages across the system. But one reader who contacted the Voice in response to last month's national patient survey, which showed nearly three quarters of patients had problems contacting some local surgeries, said he has had to call more than 100 times to get through, been kept on hold for 20 minutes – and been offered an appointment five weeks away. Earlier this summer NHS managers urged people with minor ailments to stay away from A&E as hospitals, including Southmead, experienced levels of demand usually only found in winter. But Staple Hill and Mangotsfield councillor Michael Bell told the scrutiny meeting on July 28: "There’s a great deal of public frustration at the moment about the difficulty even to make a telephone appointment with our local GPs. "It is not uncommon for the answerphone to give the message that the caller is number 15 in the queue, even at 8 o’clock in the morning. “The result of this is that more residents in need of medical assistance and advice

Patients go to A&E after they fail to get GP appointments Michael Bell are presenting themselves at the Southmead Hospital A&E or other A&Es, which can then create waiting times on occasions of five hours at the hospital for what may well be a relatively minor ailment.” Kingswood councillor April Begley said she had heard from residents who had been told "100 people have been waiting" for calls to be answered. Voice reader Martin Cox said he found it "almost impossible to make an appointment to see or talk to a doctor" at Christchurch Medical Centre in North Street. He said: "We are told to ring at 8am but it is constantly engaged and when you eventually get through you are told there are no appointments left, please ring tomorrow at 8am, and so it goes on and on!" Mr Cox said on one occasion he had called his surgery 106 times before receiving an answer, "only to be told I was 17th in the queue". He added: "I was then on hold for a further 20 minutes...before I spoke to someone who told me that all the appointments were gone for that day. I tried to make

an appointment for any time in the next week but was told their system will only let them make appointments for that day." Mr Cox said in August he received a letter asking him to discuss a blood test with his doctor but when he called to arrange an appointment, the earliest one available was five weeks away. He said: "The system is not working and is not fit for purpose." David Jarrett, the South Gloucestershire area director for the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, which funds GP surgery provision, told councillors work was being done to tackle staffing challenges across the health system. He said: “We are also working

with individual practices in terms of resilience and support to continue to ensure access is maintained. "Face-to-face appointments have always been available throughout Covid at practices. "Calls are triaged but face-toface appointments are available.” Kingswood councillor Andrea Reid told him face-to-face appointments have not always been available at every practice, saying in some cases "the patient has been asked to send photos of the issue rather than see a doctor". The commission has asked for a report showing the extent of the problem and action to tackle it. Meeting report by Amanda Cameron, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Marathon runners can celebrate at last A GROUP of 15 runners who completed a virtual London Marathon to raise money for the Staple Hill Community Hub met up to celebrate their achievement. The runners had been due to take part in the country's biggest marathon in April 2020 but after it was cancelled due to the pandemic, they ran the distance in the rearranged virtual event last October. Participants were encouraged to run their own local routes, and the hub fundraisers devised one from Page Park through Mangotsfield, Shortwood, Lyde Green and Emersons Green, to complete the 26 miles and 385 yards in five circuits. They raised a total of £4,000 for the Hub through sponsorship. With restrictions now eased the hub held a thank-you event in Page Park in August. Staple Hill Community Hub chair of trustees William Lee, who was one of the runners, said: "We weren't able to get together to celebrate our achievement at the time because of the lockdowns and covid restrictions. "It was great to finally get together again, and we were able to wear our London Marathon finishers T-shirts and medals."

Cash for improvements to cycle path IMPROVEMENTS are set to be made to the Bristol and Bath Railway Path between Staple Hill and Bitton after a project won government funding. Charity Sustrans, which helps run the stretch of the path with South Gloucestershire Council, said a project to upgrade drainage, resurface aging sections of the path and improve access points had won a share of £30 million under the Department for Transport's Summer of Cycling & Walking investment scheme to improve infrastructure for "active travel". The announcement comes as the council and Sustrans launch an appeal for volunteers to join a new group to help maintain the path between the Staple Hill tunnel and Rodway Hill. The amount which will be made available for improvements has not been revealed but Sustrans south of England director James Cleeton said it would be used to tackle issues which make the path more difficult to use,

including flooding near the Staple Hill tunnel. He said: “We are aware of flooding on some stretches that can make it impassable. By sorting this, we will be able to give everyone who wants to use the path the confidence that even in bad weather the path will be open. "This enables thousands of people to travel by foot or by wheel every day on this traffic-free, green and bio-diverse corridor." South Gloucestershire cabinet member for strategic infrastructure Steve Reade said: "More and more people are making active travel choices to stay fit and ease congestion and we want to ensure we are doing all we can to help them move around the area in safe, healthy and sustainable ways." Sustrans is working with the council to extend the OnePath improvement project from Bristol across the South Gloucestershire boundary, including setting up a volunteer group to maintain the path through Staple Hill and Mangotsfield.

The charity's head of partnerships, Jon Usher, said the group would coordinate with the council and local nature groups to help manage the path. A council spokesperson said: "This would involve volunteers helping to keep the path clear, litter picking and supporting with the management of important wildlife habitat along certain sections. "We have already had discussions with some local groups and we are keen to hear from anyone else who may be interested in taking part." The volunteers would provide a missing link between existing groups for East Bristol and Bath, who sometimes link up to tackle jobs on sections of the path in South Gloucestershire. Anyone who is interested in volunteering to help maintain the path can show an interest by emailing GreenSpace. Volunteering@southglos.gov.uk.

Hard work pays off for Downend and Mangotsfield students THE head teachers of Downend School and Mangotsfield School have praised the "hard work and dedication" of GCSE and A-level candidates. At Mangotsfield, Year 11 GCSE candidates were described as "focused, determined and resilient throughout the final months of rigorous internal assessments". Head teacher Hetty Blackmore said: "This year the students have faced challenges, not only of multiple lockdowns, but also of a late change in the expectations for assessments. "There are so many individual successes to celebrate within the results and the school community are delighted by the personal achievements of the entire cohort." Mrs Blackmore said it was hard to pick out individual students but some had exceeded national expectations, and the top ten highest-attaining students were Ewan Smith, Bryce Gapper, Robbie Hedges, Poppy Gwilliam, Jacob Ankah, Bradley Day, Jessica Rigby, Zoe Skinner, Amy Streeting and Alice Trivett,

Mangotsfield School GCSE candidates celebrate their results. who had achieved 44 grade 9s, 34 grade 8s and 13 grade 7s between them. She added: "Last year, after the first lockdown, the then Year 10 cohort came back to school in tightly managed bubbles, staggered over term 6. "It was a nervous and emotional return after such a period away. Last September they returned as Year 11 and marched forward through the year, despite bubble closures, illness and absence. "The twists and turns of the summer exam season were challenging. This heroic year

group deserves medals and I am thrilled that their successful results are a testament to their hard work and resilience.” At Downend School Year 11 GCSE candidates and Year 13 A-level students, who include some former Mangotsfield pupils, were praised for their "incredibly hard" work throughout their education. Head teacher Lisa Howell said: "We are keenly aware of how the situation over the last two years has made the final straight of this journey even more difficult than usual. Rather than taking anything away from

the efforts and achievements of our students, this has only increased our admiration of them all. "They have shown such resilience in the face of two difficult and disrupted years, and have undertaken a whole suite of assessments in order to earn the grades that they now have. "There have been some fantastic individual performances across the whole range of grades, and the sheer hard work that went into these results is a cause for celebration. "We also recognise that learning is not just about exams and that what they have learnt throughout their education will form the building blocks for their future education, work, passions and interests. "We hope that our young people will continue to pursue the interests that they have fostered during their time at Downend School and wish them all the very best for their next steps. We look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future."

Six out of ten St Brendan's students off to university MORE students from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College are going to university this year. The college in Brislington, which has many students from the Downend area, says A-level students have come through what has "arguably been one of the toughest and most unpredictable years students have ever faced". Adapting to home learning and significant changes in assessments after nationwide exams were cancelled meant the more than 800 leavers this year had to overcome many challenges. The college said 479 students (60%) are going on to university, the highest number from St Brendan’s to do so in the last four years. Of those, 121 have won places at the UK's leading 24 world-class, research-intensive

universities, known as the Russell Group. The college's Aspire Programme, aimed at helping high-achieving students to gain places on some of the most competitive degree programmes in the country, saw more than 80% of its students win university places. Another 26% of students are progressing directly on to jobs or an apprenticeship, with employers including EY, Co-op Legal Services and the NHS. Principal Marian Curran said: "Once again, we have seen an increase in the number of students successfully securing courses at universities across the country. "This year over 60% of our leavers are progressing into higher education to continue their education. "Their hard work and determination has secured them the positive destinations they

truly deserve and we are incredibly proud of them all. "We know that that they will be an inspiration to our new cohort of students in terms of being ambitious and aiming high. "To see two thirds of our leavers choose university is recognition of this ambition. "We love staying in touch with our alumni and can’t wait to follow their careers and accomplishments. "Students who choose St Brendan’s Sixth Form College receive pastoral and careers support, coupled with an outstanding quality of teaching and learning across all programmes and subjects. "Congratulations to the class of 2021 who coped well in difficult circumstances and displayed enormous resilience. This will hopefully enable them to succeed in realising their future dreams."

Colston's celebrates 'excellent' results PUPILS, staff and parents at Colston’s School are celebrating "excellent" academic and vocational results in A-levels and GCSEs. Half of the A-level grades awarded to students in the school's Upper Sixth were at A* or A, with 85% at A*, A or B. Among students studying CTEC and BTEC vocational subjects, 96% were awarded either a starred distinction or distinction, the equivalent of A* or A at A-level. Year 11 pupils also overcame a year and a half of disruption, with 58% of grades awarded at 7 to 9 and 22% of candidates achieving all their grades at 7 or above after a "rigorous and stretching" assessment process. Colston’s headmaster Jeremy McCullough said: "Everyone recognises that this examination cycle has been hugely disrupted by the ravages of COVID-19. "However, the students and teachers of Colston’s have responded magnificently to every challenge they have faced and we were delighted that, unlike last year, our hardworking examination candidates have had the opportunity to formally demonstrate just how much they have learned during these past two years. "Through a series of rigorous and

Colston's School A-level students celebrate their results stretching assessments, and by examination of portfolios where appropriate, our students have managed to achieve excellent outcomes." Mr McCullough said almost 90% of A-level candidates had secured their firstchoice university courses and the majority of GCSE candidates would return in September, when they will be joined by students from other schools in the sixth form.

He said: "Our students always learn much more than the content of examination courses and this is perhaps even more true this year. "We do not believe this cohort have missed out academically, but we do believe they will have picked up a great many other personal qualities, such as resilience and determination, that will stand them in good stead for the future."

Outstanding performances at SGS College A-LEVEL students at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College have been celebrating what the college describes as some "truly outstanding performances". Of the grades awarded to SGS sixth form students studying 23 A-level subjects, 51% were A*, A or B and more than three quarters (77%) were grade C or higher. A total of 67 A* and A grades were awarded, with 12 learners achieving all their A-levels at A* or A. SGS said all geography and further maths grades were between A* and B, with 92% of English literature and 81% of English language grades at A*-C. And 80% of grades were at A*-C and above for students taking economics, physical education, sociology, philosophy, religion & ethics, politics and film A-levels. The college described the last two years of covid-affected

learning as "exceptionally challenging for students, teachers and the wider community". Head of SGS academic studies Mark Anthony Jones said: "As a college, we could not be prouder of our students, but of course, this could not happen without the remarkable support from staff. "99% of all completing learners were awarded a grade A*-E, which is a testament to their hard work, resilience and dedication. "Many of our students will now be progressing to

higher education, with several securing places at the UK’s most prestigious universities. Well done all!" Sharmin Seco, 19, from Horfield, is celebrating an A in accounting, A* in business, an A in economics and an A in her extended project qualification (EPQ). Originally from Mozambique, Sharmin finished year 11 in India then took GCSEs in English and maths at SGS before her twoyear A-Level programme. She has secured a place to study business at Bath University and wants to own her own big

business one day. Sharmin said: “I am very happy to achieve my dream of studying at the University of Bath and this couldn’t be possible without the support I received from my teachers at SGS College. They have been absolutely exceptional and brilliant and even more during covid times. SGS will always be a part of me, and I cannot wait to start my next chapter.” Corey Gibbons, from Westonsuper-Mare, achieved A*s in maths, physics and physical education and a grade A in AS Further Maths. Corey, 18, will be studying sports and exercise science at Bath University and wants to be a sports scientist, physiotherapist or sports and conditioning coach. He said: "I am ecstatic with my results. I couldn’t have hoped for any better. I have loved every minute at SGS College. Their support and teaching has really helped me to thrive."

n EDUCATION AUGUST 10th, 2021, was an uplifting results day for boomsatsuma College students, with all achieving a qualification, and an impressive 54% awarded a Distinction, or higher, opening up fantastic possibilities for them in Bristol’s creative sector. Mark Curtis, boomsatsuma co-founder, said: “These students have come through challenging Covid-19 pandemic journeys over the past two years, so this is an important boost for them all. They all have these great platforms, that will help them move on to the next stages of their lives, be-it staying in education or into employment. What’s enormous, is that they leave with so much more than qualifications, in terms of work-place experiences, selfconfidence and wider life-skills. “We are now gearing up to return in September with next years’ students with most courses full, there are just a few spaces available for this year and we’ll be opening for 2023 enrolment to find the next generation of Bristol’s creative voices.”

Students pass with Distinction at boomsatsuma

The 2021 results show consistent performance across boomsatsuma’s creative media and acting courses, extending back over the past three years. There was no change in the

Summer school helps new Year 7s settle in NEW pupils had an early start at Mangotsfield School, which held a summer school to help them prepare for the transition from primary education. The secondary school in Rodway Hill welcomed 130 members of the new Year 7 to a ‘Challenge Week’ during the holidays in August. The aim of the week was to provide them with the chance to step out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves, make new friends, meet their teachers and get to know the school site before starting in September. The entire week was based around the 'Mangotsfield Way', which focuses on the four school values: "Community, love learning, respect and challenge". Students were split into five teams and completed various activities each day, provided by a combination of external companies and school staff. These included outdoor pursuits challenges with Adventure Bristol, escape room

Mangotsfield's new Year 7 had an early taste of school in the Challenge Week event challenges with Escape Game Events and a space show with Explorer Dome, as well as art, design technology, PE, drama and music workshops with the school staff. Head of Year 7 Naomi Clipston said the week had been a "brilliant success", adding: "My aim for the week was for the students to have fun but also to have the chance to settle any nerves before starting in September. "The confidence levels of the students had clearly increased

by the end of the week and as a result all were able to build positive relationships with their peers and staff. "Each and every student demonstrated our school values throughout the week and the feedback I received from the external companies and staff leading sessions was how engaged, enthusiastic, wellmannered and polite they are. "I am so proud of my year group already.” Assistant head Gareth John said: “This challenge week was

an ideal opportunity for us as a school to support the young people joining us in September. "We were delighted with the attitude from all those in attendance and students made the most of some exciting opportunities to push their boundaries. "This group of students have had their transition to secondary school hugely impacted and this week will go some way to preparing them for starting secondary school."

New school year brings new start AFTER 18 months of disruption, repeated isolations and arguments over home schooling, everyone welcomed the long summer break! As schools return, it is the perfect time to get started with additional support for your child’s education. The children we tutor in English and Maths at Kip McGrath in Downend require tutoring for a variety of reasons: some are struggling to keep up, due to time out from school or additional needs; others are there because their parents want to make sure that their children are ‘on track’ and well supported in their learning; some parents would like their children to be extended beyond their year level, or are aiming to get their child in to one of Bristol’s best private schools or Gloucestershire’s grammar schools. And of course, there are those who are preparing for exams, from SATs right through to GCSEs. Whatever you and your child’s needs, the tutoring at Kip McGrath’s tuition centres is based on the simple ethos that ‘all children can progress if given the correct support’. Kip McGrath provides after school tuition in English and maths for children aged 5-16, using methods that have been proven over 40 years. All Kip McGrath tutors are qualified teachers, with years of teaching experience, and resources are mapped to the school curriculum. A free assessment will identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Based on this, your dedicated

tutor will devise a personalised learning plan to enable your child to reach his or her individual learning goals. Each session lasts 80 minutes to ensure time for individual attention and time to practice what’s been taught. Lessons are available both in-centre or online. Building confidence is a key part of every session. Since I opened the Downend branch of the internationally renowned franchise 5 years ago, I have been delighted to see so many students improve their grades, as well as grow in confidence, motivation and self-esteem.

Fire in flat

A FLAT in the centre of Staple Hill was damaged when fire broke out when the occupants were out. Firefighters were called after receiving several calls from people who saw smoke filling the firstfloor flat in Victoria Street, next The scene of the fire in Victoria to the junction with Staple Hill High Street, shortly before 3pm on Street. August 17. An Avon Fire & Rescue spokesperson said no-one was hurt in the blaze, which was tackled by four fire crews. An investigation revealed that the fire had started accidentally, when an electrical socket overheated. Police had to direct traffic away from the entrance to North Street, at the traffic lights by the Portcullis pub, as firefighters dealt with the blaze.

Warning to van owners

Well, after 14 years of dressing local ladies in the shop at Staple Hill, it has been decided to close the shop in Broad Street at the end of September. Pam Summerhayes, owner of Pam @ Christine Peters ladies fashion shop in Broad Street has decided to call it a day. Pam has worked in the shop for 14 years and took over the business eight years ago from the previous owner. After the lockdown Pam took stock of her options and felt now was the right time to retire. Pam and her loyal colleague Marion Coombe are looking forward to their retirement and would like to thank all their customers for their support over the past years. Pam will close in September, so pop in and grab a bargain while they are still open as literally 'everything must go'.

VAN owners have been warned to be vigilant after power tools were stolen from two vehicles in one night. The rear doors of a van parked in Downend Park Road were forced some time on the night of August 9-10, before tools were stolen. Another van on Rodway Road in Mangotsfield, was broken into between 3am and 6.30am on August 10, with power tools again stolen. Police ask anyone with information to call them on 101, quoting reference number 5221 182 644 in relation to the Downend Park Road incident and 5221 182 532 in relation to Rodway Road. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

CodeRed: Climateemergencyneedsleadership LAST month’s United Nations report couldn’t have been clearer on the climate emergency: it’s Code Red for humanity. Unless world leaders take urgent action, our planet carries on heating up, meaning more devastating floods, more fierce heatwaves, more vicious wildfires. The easiest thing for decision-makers would be doing more of the same when it comes to economic growth and jobs. Some say that’s what created this global crisis. But leadership isn’t about taking easy decisions – quite the opposite. Radical and creative thinking is long overdue. As a teenager growing up in our area, I remember a slogan of the time: “Think globally, act locally.” That couldn’t be more apt. I’m sticking firm to my commitment to oppose Bristol Airport’s proposed expansion. That isn’t about stunting economic growth, as some may paint it, it’s about taking urgent, pragmatic local action to protect our irreplaceable planet. Of course we need more jobs here as we emerge from a brutal pandemic, but in green industries, not airports, investing in projects to help meet our ambitious goal of being carbon neutral by 2030. This month I’ll launch a £20 million Green Recovery Fund, in line with the commitment I made to you during the spring’s Metro Mayor

election. You’ll hear more about this soon. In four months since becoming Metro Mayor I’ve given funding to several other environmentally-focused projects. Bristol’s biggest visitor attraction, Brunel’s SS Great Britain, bagged money from the West of England Combined Authority, which I lead, for a heat recovery device to stop its hull rusting. Made by Husk, a Bristol company customising kitchen cabinets, received a grant for LED lighting and solar panels. Pentagon Play, a Bradley Stoke playground equipment firm, got money for energy-saving improvements to its building. Embracing pedal power, I secured £248,000 from the government for electric bicycles which make it easier to get around, leaving cars at home without having to be a lycra-clad fitness fanatic! Look out for details of taster sessions, training courses and loan schemes. That fits well with work just starting on a new cycling and walking trail, made possible by a £1 million grant from the West of England Combined Authority, around the stunning Chew Valley Lake, which is visited by thousands of people across our area, including me and my dog, Angel. Anticipating future challenges and finding solutions has always been key to progress, and there’s great work in that respect going on locally. At S&B Automotive in Bedminster I met

In a few weeks’ time COP26, the UN climate change conference, begins in Glasgow. We’ll be reminded again of what looms unless we take collective action. Just over 10 years ago I was Environment Minister: it was clear there was an emergency back then, but now it’s even more urgent. Code Red is real. It’s humanity’s greatest crisis. Let’s work together here in the West of England to play our part in beating it.

Back to school health SUTTON Chiropractic in Downend helps you and your family get back to doing the things you love. As the kids go back to school it’s important we give them the best start and a comfortable time in this exciting, sometimes stressful phase. A recent study of primary school aged children found 38% had lower back pain caused by school bags! With this in mind, it’s time to alter those school bags, improve that posture and negotiate on screen time at home. We want your whole family to be in the best of health, and enjoy life. So we thought we’d put together a few tips that can help the kids and parents get the best start this term.

1. Bags

This is an important factor and has the potential to hinder or help your child’s health if properly cared for. An overloaded, one shoulder carried bag will create postural distortions in the spine, rib cage and lower back – impacting on growth spurts, contributing to Scoliosis and creating problems further down the line. Equally weight and distribution of items within the bag have an important effect. This can be easily avoided thankfully: Wear both straps – if this is totally uncool, encourage them to at least swap from one shoulder to the other regularly Keep bag light (less than 15% of their bodyweight) Pack the largest heaviest items in the bottom, lighter smaller objects in the top of the bag Have the bag higher up on the back rather than lower down

2. Posture

What is good posture? Simply, posture is the body's position and alignment while at rest or in motion. In fact, did you know that

Posture Exercises In addition to incorporating routine chiropractic care in support of proper spinal alignment and to limit postural imbalances, you can improve your posture with these exercises: 1. Chin tuck. Hold your head upright. Pull your chin in toward your neck; hold that position for a count of five; then relax. Repeat 10 times. 2. Shoulder blade squeeze. Sit up straight in a chair with your hands resting on your thighs. Slowly draw your shoulders back and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for a count of five; relax. Repeat 3- 5 times. 3. Abdominal pull-in. Inhale; then exhale slowly to a count of five, pulling your lower abdominal muscles up and in, as if moving your belly button toward your spine. Relax and breathe normally. Repeat 3- 5 times. 4. Upper-body stretch. Stand facing a corner with your arms raised, hands flat against the walls, elbows at shoulder height. Place one foot ahead of the other. Bending your forward knee, exhale as you lean your body toward the corner. You should feel a nice stretch across your chest. Hold this position for 20–30 seconds. 5. Arm-across-chest stretch. Raise your right arm to shoulder level in front of you and bend the arm at the elbow, keeping the forearm parallel to the floor. Grasp the right elbow with your left hand and gently pull it across your chest so that you feel a stretch in the shoulder on the right side. Hold for 20 seconds; relax both arms. Repeat to the other side 3- 5 times.

Matt Sutton there are actually two types of posture? Dynamic posture is simply our whole body’s posture while moving. It’s how we walk, run, lift, and bend. Static posture on the other hand is our body’s posture while at rest. It’s how we sit, stand, and lay. Achieving and maintaining good dynamic and static posture is important because poor posture can have a direct negative impact on our bodies, both physically and mentally. Although back pain is the most commonly associated with poor posture, it’s only the tip of the iceberg. Poor posture can also cause or compound: Back pain and neck pain Headaches and migraines Arthritis Respiratory issues

reduction of screen time for children, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, puts it very simply; don’t get addicted, preserve your sleep and set a house rule for the amount of screen time you will all have. Simple fixes of no phones at the dinner table and replace your phone alarm clock with a small travel alarm clock – keeping the phone out of the bedroom will help preserve sleep properly. We are creatures of habit and the quality of our habits determines the results. Essentially this means what we do today, sets us up for tomorrow. Keep consistent in the pursuit of your health goals and the changes will come. We are running a Kids posture screening in clinic to help iron out the issues listed above, contact us to find out more. Also we would like to give a shout out to Clara C-L for being the best young patient we have!

Church's feathered visitors OVER the last year singing has not been permitted in church, so it was easier to identify an unusual sound: faint cheeps heard echoing around Christ Church in Downend. Later, birds were spotted arriving and leaving through open windows high in the building, carrying grubs in their beaks. A pair of robins had built a nest in the corner of the church by the altar (circled in the picture, right) and were now feeding a growing brood. Due to Covid, the building was a little quieter than usual, and kept well-ventilated so the birds had easy access and a dry, warm place to protect their hatchlings. The congregation kept well away from the nest, so as not to disturb the chicks, but there were occasions when the parents swooped through the service, adding their praise to the mix! One Monday morning the young birds left the nest for the first time. Unfortunately, they couldn’t leave the church easily, as the open windows were too high up to fly to, so they had to be helped out from various hiding places, such as behind the organ. As soon as they were taken outside, the parents came down to meet them, so we hope all six

survived. Now that the congregation are allowed to raise their voices in song, it’s a shame their feathered friends are not around to join in, but we hope they might return next year. Anita Dobson

Have a say on green spaces

Dame School plans are moving forward

PEOPLE are being encouraged to have their say on plans to improve the network of green spaces and water courses, including parks, nature reserves and other open spaces across South Gloucestershire. The council's draft Green Infrastructure Strategy, known as ‘Greener Places’, is open to comment until September 12. It involves plans to protect the area's "green infrastructure" of parks, woodland, farmland and water, and improve and create more habitat for nature. Council cabinet member for the environment, Steve Reade, said the strategy "recognises that we all have a part to play in responding to the challenges of the changing climate and the nature crisis." People can view the strategy and have their say online at consultations.southglos.gov.uk/ Greener_Places.

AT the end of July we finally got back together again. It was great to meet face-to-face after such a long time, and great to welcome some new faces – we hope to see you again. It was very much a case of "how is everyone doing?" rather than "next on the agenda is". Our next meeting will be on September 24 at 7.30pm at the Scout Hall. We’ve been pondering for some time what to put in the grass square in the Dame School garden. The intention has always been to have some sort of informative artwork installation depicting the history of the village, but we haven’t been quite sure how to go about it – actually, let’s be honest, we’ve had no idea how to go about it. Well, step forward Mangotsfield secondary school. Their art club were looking for a community project to get involved in and have agreed, without any arm twisting at all, to design something for us and help us see it through to completion. We’ll keep you informed on how it’s going. How about a community book swap or library? You know the sort of thing, a place where people can donate old books and others can take them and read them. They are often to be found in old telephone boxes. Well, we think it’s a great idea and, even better, we think we can make it happen, although it won’t be in a telephone box...well, probably not anyway. Watch this space.

How about some community artwork? We have a few ideas but would welcome any ideas about simple art 'things' that we could do to add a bit of colour to our community. Let’s talk South Glos community engagement forums. The council would love them to be more community-led and are perhaps a little frustrated that the community do not get more engaged. The community view often expressed on social media is that there’s no point, as the council won’t take any notice anyway. As is often the case, the reality is that there needs to be a meeting in the middle. The MRA have a slot at these meetings, and it would be great if the community could help us 'set the agenda' by telling us what’s on your mind, what you want to see happen and how can we work together to make the world a slightly better place – that sort of thing. Let us know – but please remember, no one has a magic wand! As always, we’d love more people to get involved, so if you’d like to or you need any help then please get in touch via MangotsfieldRA@gmail.com, via the ever-popular Mangotsfield Matters Facebook page or telephone our chair, Clive Heath, on 07507 168700 or me on 07918 701881. In the meantime, stay safe and look out for one another. Chris Amos

Andy Pound with daughter Hannah at the memorial match

Memorial match raises thousands A FATHER versus son cricket match has helped take the total raised in memory of a Downend mum to more than £13,000. Hundreds of people came to Downend Cricket Club for the Wendy Pound Memorial Match. Wendy's husband Andy, who helps manage the club's under17s team, and son Matt, 18, who has been playing at the club for nine years, went head-to-head in the friendly match to raise money and awareness for charity Brain Tumour Research. Wendy, who was a familiar figure at club events and was well known at Christ Church Junior School, where she had worked as a lunchtime supervisor, was diagnosed with a brain tumour after suddenly falling ill in May last year. Just five months later, the previously fit and active mother of three children – Rachel, Hannah and Matt – died. The club hosted the match on July 25 – the day after what would have been Wendy's 54th birthday – with members of the

first, second and third teams providing most of the players for the two sides. A long list of donors, including Andy's employers Gallagher Insurance Brokers, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers, the England & Wales Cricket Board and local businesses the Butchers Hook, the Fruit Tree, the Duck and Willow and AN Checker, contributed to a raffle which helped the event to raise more than £3,900 on the day. An online fundraising page linked to the event raised more than £4,300 and, added to a Facebook fundraiser held earlier this year and other donations, Andy says that around £13,800 has been raised in Wendy's memory – enough to pay for five days of research funded by the charity. Andy said: "It was very much a case of the club, friends, family and the community coming together. "The generosity of people that donated is fantastic. I was gobsmacked by the number of

people who turned up and those who couldn't but donated on the JustGiving page. "It was great fun and we played some good cricket as well, although the players had to take a lucky dip for their first shot – Matt had to face his first ball with a stump instead of a bat and I had to do a 'ramp shot'. "It got a little bit competitive

at the end because it got close – a lot of people commented on the high standard of the cricket." Andy's team won the match by two wickets, and he hopes to stage another one next year. Anyone who would like to donate in Wendy's memory can so so online at justgiving.com/ fundraising/wendy-kirby2.

MOT & SERVICING COSTS TO MAKE YOU SMILE

September, 2021

n NEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL MP

We cannot abandon the Afghan people

SERVICE FROM £99 MOT FROM £35

*

Jack Lopresti, MP for Filton & Bradley Stoke

AS somebody who served in Afghanistan on Operation Herrick 9 during the autumn/winter of 2008-09, the recall of parliament in August was poignant for me. As well as debating the situation in Afghanistan, we also honoured the 457 of our service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the more than 600 who continue to live with life changing injuries. I would also like to commend the work done here in our area by MoD Defence Equipment & Support, based at Abbey Wood. Throughout the operations in Afghanistan, they provided the equipment and logistic support to our forces there, as they continue to do for our forces around the world today. To those who say that the operation wasn't worth it or has not been a success, let us call to mind the original objective, which was to destroy Al-Qaeda on the ground, deprive it of a base from which to mount terrorist attacks across the world, defeat the Taliban and to keep our own streets safe. This was achieved. Our people, the Americans, our allies, and the Afghan army and police force achieved those objectives with honour and courage. Like most of my fellow MPs, I feel ashamed, angry and devastated by what I have seen happening in Afghanistan in recent days and weeks. I cannot help but keep remembering the ordinary people of Afghanistan and the locally employed civilians who not only risked their lives but, by helping Nato forces, risked the lives of their families, friends and villages to Taliban reprisals. I was delighted and relieved beyond measure when the Prime Minister announced the resettlement and evacuation programme for refugees, which is a fantastic thing. The speed of the Taliban advance surprised everyone, and in fairness I think the government acted as swiftly as it could. The Defence Secretary deployed troops as quickly as possible to help with the evacuation. The Prime Minister has been working with our Nato Allies and the G7. The UK has a great deal of hard-earned experience in the region. We should ensure that, along with our Nato allies from Operation Resolute Support, we play a role in assisting those states who may feel the need for support if the regional security situation deteriorates. Following on from the Integrated Review, maybe the forward deployment policy referenced by the Government can be applied to this region. Western allies, working through Nato, must strive together to ensure that the security we’ve enjoyed whilst terrorists were denied a safe haven in Afghanistan continues. Al-Qaeda will be looking to exploit areas of instability, so we must ensure that interference by neighbouring states does not allow Afghanistan to return to the situation it was in prior to the beginning of coalition operations there. In November 2006, the then prime minister Tony Blair, speaking on a visit to Afghanistan, said: “Here, in this extraordinary piece of desert, is where the fate of world security in the early 21st century is going to be decided.” So we cannot abandon the Afghan people and allow their country to once again become a base for international terrorism.

MudPieExplorerslaunches Tree will be felled CommunityFund TEN years ago Mud Pie Explorers began running a Forest School in Downend initially funded by the Friends of Lincombe Barn Woods and supported by Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council. There were occasional groups run by founder Nickie Corr. Now a team run around 20 sessions a week across South Gloucestershire and Bristol. 65% of our learners have an additional need, 1/3 have a disability. We had hoped to have a party in the woods to celebrate with our families and the local community, but that doesn’t feel right just yet due to the pandemic. So, we came up with an even better idea. Let’s set up a Community Fund together instead! We’ve noticed that every time we have a pot of money to provide free spaces for children with additional needs we are oversubscribed. These families rarely come to paid- for sessions even though they really value what we provide and can see the positive impact on their children. Local people like you and me can work together to remove financial barriers for others so they can access the empowering support that we provide. Mud Pies is not able to fund free spaces for those that need them, although it is our aim to be able to do so one day that is a long way off. So, until then we will continue to fund raise. We are also asking for support from you to set up a Community Fund to enable children with additional needs from low-income families to access the incredible support that we provide. To help us remove the financial barriers that the children have no power over. We can’t think of a better way to mark our 10th birthday than to give a gift to our community from the community. We are asking people to set up a monthly donation of whatever feels comfortable and maintainable to them. This will be put into the Community Fund. 100% of which will be used to enable local children from low-income households and those with additional needs to attend Forest School or provide sessions in local schools. You can set up your donation at www.mud-pies.co.uk/community-fund For more information about Mud Pie Explorers please contact nickie@mud-pies.co.uk

A TREE which has stood in Mangotsfield for a century is set to be felled. The ash tree, behind Mangotsfield's war memorial in the Alec Large Memorial Gardens, is suffering from ash dieback disease, a fungus which is slowly spreading across the UK, having arrived in Europe from Asia 30 years ago. The fungus slowly kills trees and is expected to kill eight out of ten of the country's ash population. Staple Hill & Mangotsfield ward councillor Michael Bell said South Gloucestershire Council tree officers broke the "very sad news" that the tree would have to be felled to committee members of the Mangotsfield Residents Association at a site meeting. He said the "very old and much loved resident" and a number of smaller ash trees in the area would be felled between now and November, and replaced by saplings of a different species.

n WILL & PROBATE ADVICE

At Simpson Solicitors – It is good to talk Wills specialists Simpson Solicitors offer all our readers a genuine FREE advice and review meeting. They will take as long as you need. And the meeting will be in plain English not legal jargon! Solicitor, John Baden-Daintree said, “Last week a client told me making a Will with us was very different from his experience with another firm. He explained it was because with us we encouraged him to

talk. We discussed what was important to him and how he wanted to make sure his family were provided for if he became seriously ill or died. Armed with this information, we talked through his various options. He said our approach of taking the time to talk to him made all the difference. All at no extra cost. It meant we could prepare a Will and Powers of Attorney for him that work in exactly the way he wanted

- tailored to his particular family circumstances.” Melissa Witter at their Kingswood office agrees, “By us talking to clients they often find out they have legal options they would not otherwise have known about. We don’t rush our clients. Our job is to guide our clients – that is why we don’t give our clients long forms to complete.” Simpson Solicitors will give you the peace of mind of an award-winning service that is fully regulated and insured. So, if you entrust something as important as your Wills and Powers of Attorney to them – you have the reassurance that everything is done properly. Right now, if you go on to instruct them, they offer our readers 20% off their (already competitive) prices. n FRIENDS OF PAGE PARK

Photo competition – we have a winner! MORE than 100 people entered this year's Page Park Photographic Competition. The contest is organised by the Friends of Page Park to highlight the beauty of the park – and find 12 pictures for the park's fundraising calendar. This year's winner is Chris Dobson, whose photo of the recently-refurbished bandstand in the park will now grace the cover of next year's calendar. Chris won a card and a voucher for tea and cakes at the Bean Tree Cafe, donated by owners Tom and Melody Beard, along with the first copy of the 2022 calendar to come off the press in September. The final 12 photos which will be seen in the calendar were picked by a judging panel made up of Friends of Page Park members and last year's winner, Phil Powell. Steph Purser, of the friends, said: "We would like to thank everyone who entered our photo competition. "There were over 100 entries, all

of a very high standard, making the judging of the final 12 no easy task. We had some amazing photos. "All the profit from the sale of the calendars will be used to continue our work to improve and maintain the park for our park visitors and our community." The 2022 calendar will be on sale from September at a cost of £5, at the Bean Tree Cafe, at local businesses in Staple Hill and Downend and at two pop-up sales the friends are holding in the park, next to the clock tower, on September 25 and October 9, from 10am to 3pm each day.

Visitor survey

THIS year's Page Park visitors survey is now live. Information provided to the questionnaire helps the friends group find out what people like and don't like about the park, which areas to focus future improvements on and enables them to show evidence of people's needs when applying for grants.

Competition winner Chris Dobson (centre) receives his prize from Friends of Page Park trustees Colin Bracey and Steph Purser The survey can be found at southglos. researchfeedback.net/s/ pagepark2021. n DOWNEND MEN IN SHEDS

A gardener's must-have accessory

DURING the past month the group have experienced a considerable level of activity at our facilities in Bromley Park, both from our members working hard building up a stock of useful woodwork items for future sale, and from interest shown by the passing public. Our bird tables have quickly become a favourite item, with nearly as many sales in the past month as we have sold at a typical Frenchay Flower Show. The team are now working hard to fulfil these orders whilst the weather is warm and dry, when much of the work can be undertaken outside. During the past month two new members have joined our ranks: we continue to encourage anyone who may be interested in our activities to pay a visit and get a flavour of who we are and what we do. At this time of year, gardeners

Trugs made by Downend Men in Sheds and those with allotments will be reaping the rewards of their toils. To this end we have recognised a possible need and produced a

range of garden trugs or, for the uninitiated, harvest baskets. For serious gardeners this is a must-have accessory, combining practical utility with ornamental value. They are useful for collecting cut flowers and plant cuttings, as well as for harvesting home grown fruit and vegetables. Some of these items are shown in the accompanying photograph and are available in various colours and sizes, to suit individual need and preference. The actual items can be seen on the days we are working at Bromley Park, namely Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Additionally we are happy to discuss making variations or bespoke items. This month we have been fortunate in that a member of the public, who lives locally, donated a substantial assortment of screws and other hardware items, which will be useful in the assembly

of our work. This has just been followed by a much-appreciated assortment of hand tools. It is worth mentioning that we have an arrangement with another local group that refurbishes and recycles surplus hand tools, prior to shipment to eager hands in underdeveloped countries. Hand tools we may acquire that are surplus to our needs will be passed on to this worthy cause. On a similar front, we have just been given a quantity of roofing timber off-cuts, which would otherwise end up in a builder's skip; this provides a useful source of base material for our activities. Pupils celebrate year of helping others MANGOTSFIELD Primary School pupils have found many ways to make a difference to their community. The school set up projects for each of its year groups under the banner ‘Pay it Forward’, which means doing something good for someone else, in recognition of a good deed done for you. The school's reception children found out about 'superheroes' within the community and made cards to recognise the work of people including emergency service staff, teachers, carers and shop workers. Year 1 children wrote letters to ask for plastic recycling facilities in their classrooms and called on Sainsbury's in Emersons Green to reduce its use of plastic after learning about plastic pollution, while Year 2s raised more than £1,100 for the Bristol Bike Project with a sponsored cycle ride after learning about the area's cycle routes as part of a project on

Mangotsfield Primary School pupils enjoy their end of year picnic sustainability and healthy living. Year 3 pupils raised more than £2,000 for the Help Bristol’s Homeless charity by running 1km every day for two weeks after learning about the Norwegian tradition of ‘dugnad’, which involves communal support or community volunteering projects. Children in Year 4 looked at the different cultures among

their year group and researched topics from a range of different countries before recording presentations and interviews to help pupils learn more about and celebrate their heritage. Year 5 pupils raised £700 by collectively walking, cycling, running and swimming the length of the Amazon river – a distance of over 4,000 miles – after learning about the damage

that deforestation is causing to biodiversity, the environment and indigenous communities. The money is going to charities working to protect forests at home and abroad. Year 6 children worked to leave a legacy for future generations of pupils to enjoy by getting involved in planning and redesigning the school's allotment and outdoor learning environment. Assistant head teacher Sonia Nicholls said: "After a challenging year, our pupils wanted to show their gratitude for the community and world in which they live. "Their efforts were celebrated through an end of year summer picnic where they shared their musical and dancing talents with the whole school. "It was so wonderful to all be together again!" The picnic raised £850 for three charities, including the Grand Appeal for Bristol Children's Hospital.

Covid support for young carers praised A MANGOTSFIELD school has been given an award in recognition of its support for young carers during the pandemic. Barley Close Primary School has been recognised by the Children’s Society and Carers Trust for its commitment to pupils who support a parent or family member who is struggling with a physical or mental illness, whose roles were more important than ever during the lockdown. The school organised weekly phone calls, activity packs and letters for young carers, along with doorstep covid-safe checks and extra support for any child who needed it. Barley Close was nominated by Vicki Houselander of Bristol Carers Support Centre for a Young Carers in Schools Covid Award, to thank staff for their work.

A young carers' session at Barley Close school earlier this year National young carers lead at the Children’s Society, Helen Leadbitter, said: "Hundreds of schools across England are participating in the Young Carers

in Schools programme, using the tools and resources to improve their support systems, and ensuring that no child need miss out on educational opportunities

because they are a carer." She said three quarters of schools achieving a Young Carers in Schools Award have noticed improved attendance among their young carers, with 94% noticing improvements in their well-being and confidence. Barley Close head teacher Jo Williams said up to one in every five school-age children have a caring role, with one in every eight of those aged under eight and each one missing or cutting short an average of 48 school days each year. She added: "The commitment and support shown by Barley Close will help to secure future opportunities for young carers and increase their well-being at school." For further information on the Young Carers in Schools award email ycis@ childrenssociety.org.uk

Club for retired professionals is back THE Frenchay Probus Club is re-launching with an open invitation to new members. After more than 18 months when members of the club have been unable to meet together, the club will return with an open meeting on Wednesday October 6 at 10.15am at Frenchay Village Hall. Probus clubs are an opportunity for men who have retired from business or professional life to meet up socially with others in a similar position. They arrange for visiting speakers to give talks on a wide variety of subjects, as well as holding social events and occasional outings.

The Frenchay club has been running successfully for over 40 years but needs to recruit new members, particularly from the more recently-retired, to stay viable. The open event will provide the opportunity to meet current members and find out more about the club. A club spokesman said: "Just drop in! You will be warmly welcomed, and refreshments will be available. We meet normally at 10am until 12 on the first Wednesday of each month, and at the start of the meeting there's coffee and chatting." The club's meetings feature a wide range of speakers, with past highlights

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

All good gifts around us HONESTY time. I’ve indulged too much in a couple of my favourites during the pandemic chocolate biscuits and hot cross buns. The recycling bin and the bathrooms scales testify against me! When we really stop and think about it, such things neither do us nor the environment much good. Pollutants from the energy and materials required to build and run factories and to transport goods. The refined sugars that cause tooth decay, give us a boost but leave us with a crash. Weight gain which can lead to the likes of heart disease and diabetes. These in turn prematurely reduce our productivity, thus putting pressure upon families, the NHS, government, and society. Then there is the waste. Such products usually come wrapped in plastic. But consider an alternative. Let’s go for a British apple - like

those planted around the Pendennis flats or possibly growing in your garden or allotment. No factory to produce it, no refinement processes, and if plucked by hand, no air or road miles. Rather than pouring harmful toxins into the atmosphere the tree absorbs them and cleans the air. It provides food and shelter for birds and insects, thus prospering the ecosystem. The apple is packed with nutrients that our bodies need. And the waste? Well, with those strong teeth you can chomp the lot(!) or the core will decompose, return to the ground, and add vitality for future growth. Isn’t the natural world amazing! How it functions and what it provides is astounding in complexity, it is life-sustaining, and it is so awesomely beautiful. The unending varieties, their fragrance, appearance, taste, and goodness. It is as if it were all part of an intricate plan for

the world and mankind from someone who really knows what is good for us, who in love provides and in doing so displays their divine wisdom and power. Yet like the very first man and woman, we so easily reject God and that which he provides for our flourishing. We reach for what, in our own apparent wisdom, seems like an instantaneous fix, expecting it to fulfil us. Whilst it may give the initial rush, we are often left feeling worse. However, when we come to our senses, realising what we have done and the havoc we have caused, astoundingly we will find God waiting for us. In his grace and goodness, he has always provided for us – and not merely physically. He stepped into this broken world and lived among people like you and me. Jesus showed us the right way to live and is the way back to God. He is the way to know

forgiveness for the mess we have made and the way to have abundant life now and eternally in relationship with our Creator and Saviour. I will continue to enjoy the odd biscuit, attempt to keep the buns until Easter and try to benefit more from the natural goodness God has made. And as I do, I’ll trust and thank him for all he has provided - for his blessings to body and soul. I hope and pray you will join me.

n DOWNEND FOLK CLUB PREVIEW NEXT AT DOWNEND FOLK CLUB:

THE MAGPIES (WITH SUPPORT FROM MAAIKE SIEGERIST Friday September 17, Christ Church Downend Downend Folk Club’s Autumn/Winter programme kicks off on Friday 17th September with a visit from The Magpies. It has only been a short space of time since the trio burst onto the UK folk scene, but they have already made a huge impression with their fresh brand of transatlantic neofolk and have been "making waves wherever they play", according to Phil Beer, of Show of Hands. Three accomplished musicians in their own right, The Magpies is a combination far greater than the sum of its parts. Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award winning guitarist, banjoplayer and singer Bella Gaffney, clawhammer banjo player and singer Kate Griffin and acclaimed fiddleplayer and tunesmith Holly Brandon draw on their wide-ranging influences to create a unique blend of transatlantic folk. In their live performances The Magpies have been exceptionally well-received. 2018 saw them perform at festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival and on main stages at Wickham Festival, Towersey Festival and Deer Shed Festival. 2019 saw their first international shows, with performances at Folk Alliance International in Montreal, a successful tour in Ireland and performances at Costa del Folk in Portugal.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps • Free planning & design service

And the summer saw many more festival performances including Glastonbury, Larmer Tree, Warwick and Shambala. Their debut album Tidings was released in June 2020 to critical acclaim: "effervescent" (The Sunday Times), "folk with finesse" (The Daily Mail), "check that album out" (BBC Radio 2). A rich and varied showcase of the live show, the album draws on a range of influences and delivers a sound that can only be described as contemporary. The album is full of songs which explore uniquely female experiences in unpredictable and surprising ways, bringing a fresh voice to the current milieu. The club are also re-introducing support acts to our evenings, and opening for The Magpies will be Bristol-based Dutch singer-songwriter Maaike Siegerist, who will perform a short fivesong set. After attending a songwriting retreat in Scotland, Maaike left her life in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam behind to study music in the UK. Armed with her acoustic guitar, she moved

to Bath, where she recorded and self-produced her debut album Born Before the Wind. Tom Robinson selected several of its tracks for airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music, praising the closing track Keep It in the Dark for its "delicate vocal, poised production, gorgeous chord changes." Maaike moved to Bristol in 2018, and has since won the songwriting competitions of Glastonbury FM and the University of the West of England. She writes songs about places, people, love, and recently, endangered species. Tickets for the event, which takes place at Christ Church Downend on Friday 17th September 2021, are available online at www. downendfolkclub.com. They are priced at £15 each and must be purchased in advance. We are also pleased to be re-introducing our bar, stocking cider, soft drinks, wine, hot drinks and locally-brewed real ale from Hambrook-based Great Western Brewing Co. The stealth-raffle will so be back, with prizes including CDs, gift boxes of beer and sweet treats. Audience members are encouraged to bring your own glass/mug/tankard/bucket, as well as reusable bottles for water, as part of the club’s drive to be more environmentally aware. There is now a 50p discount for those bringing their own receptacles. There are 60 tickets available for the moment but the club hope to be able to make more available soon. But book now to avoid disappointment!

Bands bounce back after lockdown BANDS and choirs are returning to the stage after lockdown. The Staple Hill-based Kris Nock Big Band has announced a series of concerts – the band's first live performances since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. Kris, from Downend, draws in musicians from across the country to perform in the 18-piece band, which has five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums, playing a variety of styles from traditional swing era tunes to funk, Latin and rock by modern composers. Having started to play trumpet in the 37th Kingswood Drum and Bugle Corps at the age of eight, Kris formed the big band after graduating from university in 2018. After winning top marks on competitive festival circuits, the band's progress was cut short by the pandemic, with performances and rehearsals impossible for the first few months. Following some live-streamed performances in the last year the band is about to undertake its first ever theatre tour, including local shows at the Olympus Theatre, Filton, on October 2 and Kingswood Theatre, Bath, on November 6.

The Kris Nock Big Band making a recording earlier this year Kris said: "I think it’s fantastic that we’re able to return to live music. The performing arts industry has really struggled as one of the last sectors to be able to open up fully again, due to social distancing, and sadly many musicians have had to pursue other avenues as a result of limited support through the pandemic. "We hope to make these concerts, these first experiences for us and the audience, something very special and memorable." For more details and tickets visit www.KrisNockBigBand. com.

Also back is Staple Hillbased Westerly Winds, which has almost 40 wind instrument players but is on the lookout for more. The band is looking for trombone, euphonium, and tuba players to hit its bass notes and, as part of a national event called Learn to Play Day, is holding introductory sessions at its base at the YOU Foundation in Page Road on Sunday September 26 from 10am until midday. The event will be a taster session for adults who already read music and fancy the challenge of taking up a new brass bass instrument.

Vicky Rogerson from the band said: "We will provide the music, the instrument and an experienced teacher to lead a fun and interactive session." For more information email westerlywindssh@gmail.com or book via the Eventbrite website. Another group restarting this month is the Filtones Choir, which holds its first rehearsal on September 15 at St Teresa’s Community Centre, 71 Gloucester Road North, Filton, from 1.45pm to 3.45pm. For more information please ring Dot on 07870 984760 or email dorothy.bryant@ btinternet.com.

Why BS16 is a hot postcode for house sales MORE homes have been bought and sold in Downend's postcode area than almost any other part of the UK so far this year. Latest Land Registry records show 345 houses and flats had been sold in the BS16 postcode area, which also includes Staple Hill, Mangotsfield, Emersons Green and Fishponds. That made the area the fifth busiest in the country, behind two Brighton postcode districts, one in East London and one in Croydon, which was the busiest with 425 transactions. The government's stamp duty holiday and young first time buyers having extra money saved from not going out during lockdown are among the explanations for the more than 197,000 transactions in the year to May, which were divided into postcode areas by national estate agent Keller Williams UK. Downend estate agents say there are

a number of reasons why the area is the busiest in the whole of the West Country. Lawrence Foster, sales manager of Ocean estate agents in Downend, said the experience of the covid lockdown in London had prompted many residents of the capital to relocate, with Bristol and Brighton among their most popular destinations. He said the BS16 area's schools and access to major transport links made it popular, and it was also better value for money than many areas closer to the city centre. Lawrence said: "In Bishopston or Clifton you can't get what you can for your money in BS16." He said people looking for extra space in the garden, or to convert a garage into a home office or games room, were more likely to find it in the area. Joanne Wade, managing director of

M Coleman estate agents, said there were more buyers than sellers in an "incredibly busy" market in the BS16 postcode area, particularly in Fishponds. She said one house which had been listed for sale at 6pm on her firm's website had attracted 10 bookings for viewings overnight, with another 10 booked during office hours the next day. Joanne added: "BS16 has always been incredibly popular because of good schools, and access to the city, ring road and motorway network. "It's also been extended considerably – with Emersons Green and Lyde Green the postcode has grown in size – as well as being an amazing area to live and work!" Joanne said more first time buyers were coming out of the rental market, having gained more disposable income by saving the cost of commuting, eating out and socialising during lockdown.

THE literal meaning of the word photography comes from the Greek ‘drawing with light’. What we see is reflected light, and with landscapes and seascapes in particular, it is often the quality of the light that counts, rather than the details in the picture. The three examples shown here show broad vistas without very much in the way of details: views of the sea in such a placid mood that there is comparatively little happening, but each image is interesting in its own way. ‘Saunton Sands’ has the sea flowing in over a beach – no dramatic crashing waves, just a few tiny figures along the shoreline, but somehow they and the patterns of muted colours of the sea makes the composition work. ‘Dunlin at Dusk’ is even more minimalist in terms of colour variation, the sea and the sky almost merging. The only other objects, the birds and the buoy are carefully positioned to balance the picture. By contrast, ‘St Twroggs Island’ is filled with detail, not only the subject in the foreground, but part of a bridge in the distance behind it. The island is in the Severn Estuary, so the bridge is the M48, with the building on it probably

a medieval chapel. These act as a base for the aspect of the picture that dominates, the impressive sky. Landscape photographers do love a dramatic sky! Downend Camera Club is a friendly, informal group who normally meet on Tuesdays at 7.30pm at the Assembly Hall, Salisbury Road, Downend, although actual meetings are currently suspended. For the time being we are continuing with a programme of online photographic presentations, as well as regular online competitions. The club has a Facebook page and a website at www. downendcameraclub.org.uk that shows details of the club, members' galleries, past competition winners and a forum for discussion of all things photographic.

Zac's 117-mile coastal challenge smashes target A YOUNG fundraiser from Downend has completed a five-day, 117-mile Jurassic Coast walk to help homeless people. Zac Churchill aimed to raise £100 to buy sleeping bags for Helping Homeless Believe, a Bristol-based charity which provides emergency help for anyone spotted sleeping rough in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. But thanks to support from people who read about his challenge or met him during the walk from Exmouth in Devon to Studland in Dorset at the end of July, the Mangotsfield Primary School pupil had raised more than £2,300 as the Voice went to print. Mum Mel said nine-year-old Zac is the youngest person to have completed the walk. She added: "It was extremely challenging but Zac picked himself up from the lows and soldiered on, despite all the blisters, the sweltering heat, the nettles that were higher than him that we had no choice but to walk through, and all the insect bites." Zac said: "I really enjoyed the walk – I got to see dolphins, peregrine falcons, deer and loads of rabbits – and so many beaches. "There were so many cliffs and really steep steps but I was whizzing ahead and was

OUR July meeting was due to be a picnic with a cream tea theme. This was going to be our first faceto-face get-together outside, and we were all really looking forward to meeting up for the first time since restrictions were lifted. However, the good old British weather had other ideas and we had to revert to plan B, and had a

‘virtual’ picnic on zoom. Despite the change of plan, we all had a lovely evening, eating our scones complete with jam and clotted cream and taking part in a quiz put together by our quiz expert (aka Julie, our president). Our yarn club is currently working on a yarn bomb. What is that, you may ask? It’s covering something in brightly coloured knitted or crocheted squares, for example a tree. Our members are being asked if they would be able to knit or crochet a small square (yarn club are happy to provide the yarn and needles) and the yarn club will sew them all together and decorate the object – watch this

From our active sub groups, including yarn club, book club and soon-to-continue cinema club, to our main meetings and our jampacked newsletter, we continue to offer our members a very wide and varied programme of meetings, so there really is something for everyone. Despite the challenges of the past 18 months, we are delighted that our WI membership goes from strength to strength and we are seeing new members joining us, which is fantastic. ALTHOUGH August is a quiet month for our WI, with the school holidays and so on, we have still managed to arrange some social gatherings. We had a had a lovely time at

a coffee morning at the Warmley Waiting Room, which we think is well worth a visit. We also have a booked Mokka in Downend for a breakfast, and a few of us have booked to see White Christmas at the Hippodrome in November. Regular readers will know of our monthly pub lunch at the Lamb – we have already booked our Christmas lunch there in December. On a more serious note we have received an action pack from the National Federation of WIs providing information on a number of initiatives being supported by WIs across the country: ‘The Whole Story’ relates to climate change; ‘Stop Modern Slavery’ and ‘Make a Match’, which addresses the need for more stem cell donors. At Mangotsfield we will be looking through these and have already held a Zoom meeting to discuss the ‘Making a Match’ project. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Speeding: achoicethatputsothers’ livesatrisk

H

ELLO to September – and good luck to all of those who are starting or returning to school, college and university. Personally, I still cannot believe that we are almost three quarters of the way through 2021! My team and I continue to gather momentum and I feel well and truly embedded within the role. As I discussed in my last column, the police and crime survey, which closes on September 20, continues to be a focus and I am still calling on local people and communities to tell me what policing issues matter most to them by completing it. The feedback from the survey will help shape my Police and Crime Plan, a legal document that includes various aspects about the policing of the area, how the chief constable will be held to

account and how the PCC will use the money to deliver an effective and efficient service and support other services, such as victim support providers. We’ve had a great response already to the survey, but we want to continue to hear from as many local people, from all walks of life, right up until it closes. The survey is an opportunity for residents and businesses to tell me their views, thoughts and concerns about policing in their villages, towns and cities. As PCC, I am the bridge between local people and the police, and I want as many people as possible to tell me what they want their police service to focus on. The survey takes just 10 minutes to complete and will make a real difference to policing in your communities. You can find it at my website, www.

avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk. Last month, the Avon and Somerset road safety and road policing teams carried out enhanced operations across the area as part of a national speed enforcement campaign. Based on information and footage provided by local people, they targeted repeat offenders and speeding hotspots, including the Stoke Gifford area. They have also been working closely with partners including Community Speedwatch groups and local authorities to find solutions to some specific road safety concerns. Speeding is a choice that puts others’ lives at risk and I want to thank those who comply with speed limits to keep themselves and others safe. I am delighted that the police are listening to local people and working hard to

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford address them by working closely with partners including local authorities, Highways England and the fire services to find solutions to road safety concerns. We all have a role to play in tackling speeding drivers, so do not forget that you can report speeding concerns to the police at www.avonandsomerset.police. uk/report.

n DOWNEND BAPTIST CHURCH NEWS

GettingBack toSomethingNewat DownendBaptist LIKE many of us, as a local Baptist Minister, I looked forward to the ending of legally imposed covid limitations with great anticipation. Over the course of the pandemic, I’d preached sermons into video cameras in empty buildings, conducted funeral services which most mourners were unable to attend and supported (as best as I could, from our spare bedroom!), a congregation and community facing down the greatest health crisis in a generation, with its social and economic ramifications that we’re arguably still just beginning to understand. And so, while I recognise the ‘return to normal’ is a return to a somewhat different kind of normality to the one we left behind, it is, I believe, an event that we can and should be deeply thankful for. At the same time this is an opportunity to ask ourselves what elements of our old normal we really want to carry with us into our new. As a church community, asking these questions has meant

we’ve paused some things that had been normal to us, launched some things that are new and ‘reformed’ some old things into new shapes. People have been meeting in our building, in smaller numbers and with extensive precautions, whenever this has been permitted, throughout the past 17 months. However, it is amazing to now be able to meet more freely at last, while continuing to be ‘covid aware’

in the way we operate. We’re continuing to operate a live YouTube stream for our services as well as a telephone line that people can use to listen in. As I write, we’ve also just launched a new community space called the Shared Place: Downend, and there are plans for more activities, including our youth and children’s groups and Ladies Enterprise to begin meeting again in the coming

weeks, as well as a special art exhibition at Harvest time which we’d love to invite you to! We’d love to connect with you, or to let you know more about any of our activities. So please do drop in and see us, check out our website at www.downendbaptist. co.uk, our Facebook page at www. facebook.com/DownendBaptist or give us a ring anytime on 0117 970 1058!

The Shar e d Place : Downe nd ope ns it s door s THE Shared Place: Downend is a community space, hosted by Downend Baptist Church, designed for anyone who would like to take time out and simply be. Drinks and cakes are available, and guests are welcome to bring a favourite book or activity, or borrow one of ours. A separate area allows space for quiet prayer or reflection where we also offer short

times of led prayer, for anyone who would like to join. In addition, our team will gladly take time to chat to guests and can offer signposting to other local groups and services which may be of interest. The Shared Place, which is partnered with national charity Renew Wellbeing, launched on 9th August and is now open every Monday, excluding bank holidays, from 1pm to 3pm!

n PHOTOGRAPHY WITH LINCOMBE BARN CAMERA CLUB

Capturing the essence of Bristol THE last competition before the summer break gave a challenge to competitors with the title Essence of Bristol. Those two words - "essence of" - made all the difference, meaning that photographs would need to be much more oblique than just a simple ‘Bristol’: no tourist pictures, but something that would try to give an impression of what Bristol is all about. As usual our members rose to the challenge, reflecting a modern city aware of its history, its place in the forefront of new arts and its commitment to multiculturalism in all its meanings. Two specific subjects emerged in a number of entries: Bristol Pride and the city’s proud place as a progenitor of graffiti art. So I’m sharing an example of each, both having been highly commended. First up is Gay Pride Week by Bruce Gibbs. Taken from near the top of Park Street, it shows the celebration rainbow lights on the Wills Memorial Tower but cleverly enhanced by using a long exposure and adding the light trails of passing vehicles and the light burst from a street light.

Homeward Bound by Jeff Mckinstry Rachel Domleo’s Graffiti Capital celebrates Bristol’s international artistic reputation, showing a graffiti artist at work, looked down on by his apparently disapproving subject. Finally, Jeff Mckinstry earned third place with Homeward Bound. The modernity of Millennium Square frames a distant prospect of the SS Great Britain in the russets of dusk, as a multicultural mix of citizens make their way home. Congratulations to them and other award winners. We are now looking forward to a return to some kind of normality with the recommencement of live meetings in Lincombe Barn on September 14, when members will share their photographs. If you’re looking for company and new acquaintances, we always welcome new members.

n DOWNEND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY n DOWNEND GARDENING CLUB AT LINCOMBE BARN

Autumn is almost upon us

Around the world in 80 minutes DOWNEND Horticultural Society had an evening outing to South Kelding gardens in Upton Cheyney. The owners gave us a guided walk around the seven-acre garden and arboretum, with plants grouped by continents, down to a woodland area, boundary stream and wildlife pond. Back at the house there are herbaceous and shrub beds. This garden is open as a part of the National Garden Scheme, with funds going to Macmillan, Marie Curie and other charities. Our next meeting, on September 9, is a talk about fruit growing at 7.30pm at the Assembly Hall, Salisbury Road. Call Roger Davis on 0117 957 1703 or Hilary Walton on 0117 979 2832 for more details. Roger Davis

HERE we are, with autumn almost upon us: we will soon be able to enjoy the beautiful colours of the changing leaves on trees and other plants. We have the autumn flowers to enjoy, which are predominately oranges and yellows and are bright colours to cheer us each day. This can be a busy time of year: we are all cutting back spent flowers to encourage them to throw up more flowers and not set seed. Many of you will be gathering in your crops, perhaps freezing some for the winter. On your walks you may be lucky enough to find some blackberries, and with a few apples make a crumble or pie and some jam. Time to think about potting up our pots and baskets ready to go through winter into spring. Pansies, violas and primroses all make a good showing, with some ornamental ivy to trail and some bulbs and you are set to go - maybe even find a miniature shrub, to give it height. A lovely display in the making. Also think about if you would like hyacinths in bloom for Christmas you need to think about getting the bowls and bulbs and make sure you purchase prepared bulbs for this. They will need to go into a dark room and be brought out when they begin to shoot. You will have the flowers to enjoy and the beautiful scent the give out. It is also good to take a photo of your garden each month, then when you are thinking about what to add, you can see the spaces and think about what would look good in the space. A statue or some such structure might add a different perspective and, when plants have died down, there will be a point of interest in your garden. If you have clay pots hanging around you do not use you may like to be creative by forming something with them. Even a piece of fallen tree can make a feature. Don't forget to book a trip to Westonbirt Arboretum for the splendid colours there, as everything begins to change from green to the lovely golds and deep yellows, especially the acers, which are wonderful to see. Don't forget your camera or phone if you can take photos on it. You might even take a sketchbook and some colouring pencils to make a drawing. We are to begin meeting at the Barn in September and will begin with a quiz evening and catch-up. We have all our regular members signed up, so we are looking forward to spending time together. Enjoy your gardens and get creative. Mary Head, Secretary

n CHRISTINE'S COLUMN

Community orchard at Emersons Green Park A COUPLE of months ago a friend who is in the Nordic Walkers told me about the orchard in Emersons Green Park. Although I have been to the park many times since living here, as it is right on my doorstep, I must admit I did not know of its existence. So, one sunny afternoon I actually found it, tucked away in an area alongside a path that I had not walked along before. A little way down the path, on the right hand side, I came across a very informative notice board and two notices asking for volunteers to help with the upkeep of the orchard.

Apart from my daughter and family and my neighbours I did not know a soul in Emersons Green, so I thought this would be a good idea to get to know likeminded people. The following Thursday I went along to investigate, armed with a pair of shears and secateurs. Luckily there already was a lady there who introduced herself to me - another Christine! We were soon chatting, and then other volunteers arrived, amongst them Bobby and Chris and their lovely golden retriever, Holly, who are in charge of the orchard. They welcomed me and very soon Chris suggested I cut

back some of the long grass overhanging the pathways there. To date, I have cut back the brambles and nettles along the path which runs along the back of the orchard. Over the weeks I have been going there I am gradually getting to know the volunteers, and new ones are coming along each week: we now have a very happy band of about nine. Set up with the community, to be able to pick the fruit, it was started ten years ago from the site being just a field. Bobby and Chris were just given a small amount of funds to buy fruit trees and bushes in the beginning.

n SPORT THE year 2022 will be a special one for Cleve RFC, who will be reaching the landmark of 100 years providing community rugby in South Gloucestershire. Plans are being drawn together for some memorable events to mark this amazing achievement. From small humble beginnings, using a field that is now part of Page Park in Staple Hill, to its current home at The Hayfields in Mangotsfield, the club has achieved some notable success in producing talented players. Following the covid interruptions to the 20/21 playing season, everyone at the club is looking forward to a return to rugby action and some season normality. The first team will compete in Western Counties North and the season starts in earnest on September 4 with the visit of Clevedon to the Hayfields, in Cossham Street. Cricket club in the hunt for trophies THE 2021 season has been a very rewarding one to date for Carsons and Mangotsfield Cricket Club, and there is the prospect of silverware as the season comes to its conclusion. The 2nd Xl have already secured promotion but only need 6 points out of a potential 40

from the final two games to win their division. The success of the team has been built around youth team players Ollie Clatworthy and Michael Coles, as well as veteran spinner Glyn “Polly” Flinders. The 1st Xl, having adjusted to life in the Division 7 at the start

All support is needed, if you’re willing to travel to watch us! The 2XI are 20 points clear of the drop zone but have a tough game next week at home to Winterbourne, and support is needed for them, also on the 28th from 1pm. The 3XI are virtually all but safe heading into the last game at home, which is the Civil Service Sports Ground, Filton. of the season, are also now on a fine run of form and unbeaten in 10 games, which sees them comfortably in third place. Youth Team player Tom King has been in the runs, with Craig Woodland one of the leading wicket takers across the Bristol and District Cricket League. The Sunday team are also sitting in second place in the North Somerset Cricket League, still with a chance of promotion. The club’s U15s have shown their promise by going through the league season unbeaten and have finished top of their section. The club’s U16 and U19s team have also both reached the Gloucester Cricket Board’s T20s finals day, which is due to be held at Cirencester Cricket Club on September 5. To help celebrate 100 years of Carsons Cricket Club, chairman Andy King has organised a club tour of 30 players and spectators

to South Wales. The week-long tour was oversubscribed and shows how the club has evolved in the last five years, on the playing and social side. With the club keen to encourage cricket in the area, youth coordinator, Tim Ravenscroft has run some coaching sessions for boys and girls at the club during the school holidays. The club have also hosted the Gloucester Cricket Board’s junior coaching sessions. Carsons and Mangotsfield have also entered into a sponsorship arrangement with local business JT Barbers. Owner Joe Tizzard told Andy he was looking forward to sponsoring a local club and has agreed to offer a discount to members for their first cut - hopefully there will be lots of smart haircuts around the club! Flyers host tournament for 80 teams ALMOST 20 years had passed since youth football club Downend Flyers Girls had hosted a tournament – but this summer was time to end that drought. The original date in June had to be postponed due to a rise in covid cases but finally, on August 8, the festival of football was able to commence. Despite some unseasonal wind and rain, volunteers were on site at 6am to prepare for the sort of event the girls had desperately missed over the last two seasons. As the rain gradually eased during the morning, the girls did not seem to care being soaked to the skin as the cheers went up all around the ten pitches at Johnson Road in Emersons Green when the glorious sound of the thwack of leather nestling in nets rang around the venue. Over the course of the day more than 80 teams competed, featuring girls aged from five to 15 years old in eight different age groups. Local Bristol teams were of course present but there were visitors from Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and as far afield as the city of Oxford.

Lambert and Martyn set for Cossham Street

The later games were played under some sunshine at the end of the day. The club looks forward to hosting the tournament again next summer, with feedback welcomed from teams and locals to ensure a successful and considerate event to ring in a special 30th anniversary year for the club, which continues to grow with nearly 250 girls and two senior teams now under the Downend Flyers umbrella. Anyone who is interested in joining Downend Flyers can email info@ downendflyers.com. Tony Mooney

n ON THE TREATMENT TABLE

Thanks for the warm welcome HELLO! It's Catherine Quinn here taking over from Tim for the month… I am one of the Chiropractors here at Cleve Chiropractic and thought I’d relive my first 18 months here with you in Bristol which didn’t turn out quite as planned … March 2020 will stick in all our minds for decades to come. It will be spoken of in school history classes and will be remembered as a month where our worlds changed. I had planned for a big change in March 2020 … but little did I know quite how momentous that would all turn out to be! After completing the Winter Sports season with the Norwegian and Dutch Skeleton teams, swapping in and out of various countries with Tim, I was about to begin a journey I had been planning for over a year … my big move to Bristol. That weekend I packed up my London life and made the drive across the M4 to settle into my brand-new home in Frenchay. After just two weeks of seeing patients at Cleve, driving back and forth to London to treat the Queens Park Rangers Team, and trying to turn my house into a home, that fateful night finally arrived - Lockdown! There I was in a city where I knew

very few people, the Clinic closed and the world turned upside down, what now?! As Tim has spoken about, I have the honour of being President of the British Chiropractic Association. So, with Tim (as our brilliant Treasurer), we had the responsibility not only to ensure that the patients and staff of Cleve Chiropractic were safe, but that every Chiropractor in clinical practice, education or research across the UK was also able to stay as safe as possible during a time of great uncertainty. We jumped straight into action, meeting with everyone from the Department of Health and Public Health to our Regulator and the NHS. There was little to no guidance available for those of us providing healthcare in a private setting, but whilst NHS healthcare stood still to prioritise the Covid response, so many of you were still experiencing back, neck and other joint pains, with nowhere to access care. Our priority was to get those able to help back in clinics as quickly as possible to help you. I can only imagine the frustration of the patients I saw during lockdown via telehealth who knew that what they really needed was some hands

A SAFE SPACE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN WHO MAY BE EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTIES AT HOME

on care. I was frustrated too! After just two weeks of meeting and helping the lovely people of Mangotsfield and beyond, I was now limited to showing all my best stretches over Skype and filming exercise videos for our social media channels, when what I wanted to do was be physically present to provide my best possible treatment. With so many people now working from home and unable to exercise in the ways they wanted, demand to see us in clinic was certainly high! After two months of Tim and me writing risk assessments and guidelines, giving seminars on how to practise safely, and then finally implementing it for ourselves at Cleve, we were able to open our doors again and start doing what we love best, helping you to live pain free and well. From that point on, being in clinic each week with you all has been wonderful as I have been able to helping so many of you to cope with and manage the changes you have each experienced in your lives, working from home and revamped exercise programmes. Remember that the simple answer to most of these challenges is to remember is to move well and often, so if you can keep up a regular and manageable level of activity, you will be doing yourself the biggest favour for years to come! I want to thank the amazing team at Cleve Chiropractic for welcoming me so warmly over the last 18 months, my patients for giving me all the tips on where to go and what to do in Bristol and listening to my dreadful dating experiences… and my next-door neighbours Sam and Nathan for being the best neighbours I could have ever

My heartfelt thanks go to Tim and his family for making me a part of their family when mine felt so far away and being my ‘support bubble’ through one of the most surreal and potentially isolating times of my life. I hadn’t ever thought I would have a Christmas at the Button household but waking up on Boxing Day morning after a fabulous day to three Button children wanting to jump on my bed made me feel incredibly loved! My first 18 months in Bristol has taken some adjusting to… but I am excited about what the next 18 months will bring and I look forward to meeting more and more of you in clinic as we help you to overcome the physical challenges and painful episodes you may face #CleveFamily xx

Mangos chalk up first win of season in FA Cup MANGOTSFIELD United have won through to the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup after recording their first competitive win of the season in the competition's Preliminary Round. The Mangos beat Tavistock AFC 3-0 at Cossham Street on August 21, with a goal from Liam Towler in the first half followed by two from Wayne Nderemani in the second in front of 200 spectators. Towler opened the scoring in the 45th minute with a 25-yard shot that hit the crossbar on its way over the line.

Three minutes into the second half Nderemani scored from a corner before making it a brace in the 82nd minute, courtesy of a ball from George Neill, to see off the side that knocked them out of the competition last year. The Mangos are still four matches away from the First Round proper – their next tie in the competition is in the First Qualifying Round on September 4. The club are still looking for their first win in the Southern League Division One South after suffering defeats in their opening two

fixtures. On August 14 Mangotsfield lost the season opener 2-0 at home to Southampton based Sholing FC and just two days later travelled to Evesham United, where they lost despite going ahead in the 18th minute, when home defender Ryan Paddock turned Wayne Nderemani's cross into his own net. The Mangos' next fixture was set to be at home to Plymouth Parkway on August 28 in the league, with a derby match away to Bristol Manor Farm following two days later on Bank Holiday Monday.
