Standing with Ukraine

PEOPLE in the Downend area have come together to send help and show solidarity with Ukrainians after the Russian invasion. A Mangotsfield mum who grew up in Ukraine started an appeal for help that saw tons of donations from across the area and beyond, collected at Emersons Green Village Hall and taken across Europe by volunteers in vans and lorries. Among the drivers was Staple Hill dad Nathan Calder who decided he had to do something instead of just watching events unfold on TV. Fundraising events have been held by everyone from churches to primary school children, indoors, outdoors and online. And vigils have been held for people to think, pray and show their support for a nation under attack. Pages, 4,5, 6, 7 & 44

1 in 20 adults experience headaches daily. What’s the solution other than taking harmful painkillers? Modern day life could be damaging your health, but one award-winning proven process is transforming the lives of thousands of people around Bristol. It’s so easy to get caught up in our lives that we can often forget to take time to ourselves and take steps to protect our health. When life gets busy, we tend to put our health last, rather than first, even when we’re in pain. When you think about it, there are so many stressors around us daily. Our bodies aren’t designed to spend so much time sitting down or hunching over a laptop all day. This is so far from our hunter-gatherer origins that our bodies struggle to cope. Pain is your body’s way of showing you that it’s struggling to cope. Around 1 in 20 adults experience a headache daily, but it isn’t hard to understand why when we think about it. Your body doesn’t have to struggle. How we all live our lives, surrounded by technology all the nature of our work, is unlikely to change anytime soon. So, it’s about taking steps to help your body thrive and to make sure you live your best life. Chiropractic has been proven to help with so many different types of pain. Using over 100 years of experience, and an award-winning proven process, Willow has helped thousands of people like you get out of pain and live life to the fullest.

It’s not just about getting you out of pain. It’s about guiding you to enhance and optimise your health and wellbeing, whilst providing you with invaluable tools to protect your body now and for the future. It can be hard to balance modern life with what your body needs, but Willow can help you on your journey. “Without this balance, you’re setting yourself up for health problems in the future,” says Christian Palmer (Doctor of Chiropractic) from Willow Chiropractic. “When you spend most of your time hunched over, your brain starts to think this is your normal posture. The result? It becomes a structural change in your body. So, yes, whilst we want to help you out of pain, we also want to give you the tools you need to protect your body too.” It takes time, energy, and patience to achieve your health goals, chiropractic isn’t a quick fix. “Years and years of poor posture and pain can’t be solved instantly. Equally, you can’t put in time and effort for a short period of time and expect this to last a lifetime. You wouldn’t eat a balanced diet for a month and expect that to keep you healthy for the rest of your life. You need to be consistent. The same applies to chiropractic,” says Dr Christian.

Celie, a patient at Willow, commented “For the last 2-3 years I have suffered with migraines every few weeks, but would experience frequent headaches in between. I had back pain, neck pain, and I was aware of a hump at the bottom of my neck. It was badly affecting my sleep; I was waking up about 6-7 times a night. Now, my sleep, mood and energy levels have improved. I no longer get headaches or migraines; my posture is better and the hump at the bottom of my neck has reduced. It’s amazing. I wasted so many years in pain, being uncomfortable and tired.” If you’re in pain and want the same life-changing results as Celie, Willow Chiropractic is offering a discounted consultation where they will carry out a full examination and tell you exactly what they find. There is no obligation, all for £10. So, whether you have been suffering with your pain for a while, or it has started recently, call on 0161 524 7075 today to start on your journey to a happier and healthier life.

n NEWS BUS services to Downend are being cut by operator First. The company is axing the Y2 route, which links the area to Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Coalpit Heath and the city centre, as it is "no longer commercially viable". It is also reducing the frequency of the 48 and 49, linking Downend and Staple Hill respectively to the city centre and Lyde Green, from every 20 minutes to every 30 minutes on Sundays. The company also says "some early poorly used morning and weekend journeys will be withdrawn" on the routes, but had not given details of which ones as the Voice went to print. First will also withdraw "some journeys" on the 7 service linking Staple Hill to the city centre via Soundwell, Speedwell and Redfield, which currently runs 35 times in each direction on weekdays and between 25 and 29 times at weekends. Metrobus m3 services from Emersons Green to the centre will be withdrawn after 9pm, affecting one weekday service.

Downend and Staple Hill bus services face cuts The Y2 runs seven times a day from Bristol to Yate and eight times in the opposite direction Monday to Saturday and six times in each direction on Sundays, roughly once every two hours. The cuts will be introduced on April 24, and were announced two weeks after the government said it would spend an extra £150 million nationwide to support local bus services until October. First West of England managing director Doug Claringbold said: “Despite the Government extending emergency funding for another six months, ongoing issues with driver availability mean further action is necessary beyond the changes we made at the end of January to ensure we can operate services more reliably for our

customers. A number of services will see temporary reductions in frequency, whilst passenger and driver numbers are constrained, but unfortunately there are a number of services that are not commercially viable even at prepandemic passenger levels." The cuts have sparked a political row, with South Gloucestershire's Conservative councillors and MPs accusing the West of England Combined Authority, led by Labour Metro Mayor Dan Norris, of "approving" them, failing to consult residents and "passing the buck on whose responsibility it is to keep buses running". But a spokesperson for the Metro Mayor said Weca had not yet been told by the government how much money it would receive from the £150m Bus Recovery Grant.

LOW ON STOCK?

EDA NOT AT

And while bus operators have to notify Weca of changes to services, the combined authority "does not have powers to prevent services being withdrawn if those services are fully commercial ones". Weca recently approved funding to support the 5 route from Downend to the centre, and is also subsidising the Y5 from Fishponds and Staple Hill to Pucklechurch and Chipping Sodbury. Mr Norris said: "The Tories created the current system that is seeing cuts and service reductions, and no public consultation is built into their plans. "There isn't enough money in the system to keep these buses going, and that's a big blow."

Community stands with Ukraine A MANGOTSFIELD mum's mission to help the people of her native Ukraine after it was invaded by Russia sparked a phenomenal community response. Vera Stadon asked for donations in a Facebook post and, after they soon filled her living room, she teamed up with Viv Roberts, the manager of Emersons Green Village Hall, who offered her a room to store them in. Within days, as word of the appeal spread, tons of supplies had been donated, from medical equipment to military kit. Dozens of people brought, sorted and loaded donations. Joining British and Ukrainian volunteers were Poles, Lithuanians and even some Russians living in the area, while donations were brought from across the region and as far as Wales. The donations were then taken to the Poland-Ukraine border – the first load by a Ukrainian lorry which had made a delivery in the UK and had been due to go back empty. Five van loads and a further lorry load were taken by volunteers, including drivers from the Emersons Green depot of delivery firm DPD, Staple Hill mechanic Nathan Calder and his friend Wesley Hawkes, members of Bristol Manor Farm football club and a Bristol father and daughter, Kev and Rhi Draper, who have stayed in Poland to help bring refugees away from the Ukrainian border and give food and drink to people waiting to cross. Vera started the appeal by posting a list of the donations needed on Facebook. She said: "I cried a lot when I saw the news of the big disaster happening in my country. "My friends started calling me, saying we should get some aid together. I never thought it would be that big – all I wanted was to send one van. "Suddenly my living room was overflowing, so I asked Viv if she could help. "It's devastating and horrible what's happening in Ukraine, but the help and donations are amazing – people's power is sometimes more than the big charities.

amazing – they were here for the morning, all day and all night until the hall locked up. "You needed to see it and be there to appreciate the generosity." Among the volunteers was Anthony Davies, who works for DHL at Emersons Green. He said: "It moved me so much that I had to do something – I couldn't just sit at home and watch it on the telly any more." Vera is sharing updates about future donations and fundraising on the Facebook page Emerson's Help Ukraine, and is also helping to find translators for the families of three children with cancer who have been brought from Ukraine to Bristol Children's Hospital for treatment. Another group, From Bristol with Love, is continuing to take donations.

Volunteers load up a lorry heading for Ukraine at Emersons Green Village Hall.

"I've been either overwhelmed with joy or crying at why I have to do this. I've had so much help." Vera was given leave from her job with Bristol City Council while she organised the donations and looked for transport. Supporters "exhausted every military store in England" to find helmets and other protective equipment, while also bringing medicine and first aid kits, dried food, nappies and sanitary products. Vera, a married mum of three, has lived in the area since 2008, having moved to the UK in 1997. Her mother, brother and sister-in-law and their three children were still in Ukraine as the Voice went to print. Some are waiting for visas to be processed, but Vera fears that her mum, who is 75 and lives close to a Ukrainian military base, would not be fit enough to wait in the long queues of people waiting to leave the country. She said: "At the moment they are still safe but for how long, we don't know." The village hall received donations for just over ten days before stopping after running out of space. The remaining donations were taken to a warehouse in Patchway and were starting their journey to Ukraine on March 20. Village hall manager Viv Roberts said: "It's just been a phenomenal, overwhelming response – I've never seen anything like it. "The emotion and support between the volunteers and people dropping off donations was second to none, and heartwarming to see. "The local people were

amazing but we also had driving for an hour and a half to find us and drop off stuff. "We had children of three and four, we had the older community coming with packets of nappies, saying they hadn't bought them for many years – it brought the whole community together. "We also had one couple come in and donate £500 in cash and another gave £250. "The volunteers were

Vigils and prayers to show support PEOPLE across Downend, Staple Hill and Mangotsfield are attending vigils and prayers to show their support for the people of Ukraine. Around 100 people attended a vigil in Fountain Square, Staple Hill, on March 20 to pray, lay flowers on a Ukrainian flag and reflect as the Salvation Army band played hymns and other music. There were also activities organised by the Salvation Army, including the chance to plant or colour pictures of sunflowers – Ukraine's national flower – and eat crackers and drink water to represent hardship. A collection raised £448 for the Disaster Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Staple Hill & Mangotsfield ward councillor Ian Boulton spoke at the event, telling residents: "We hope some of the warmth here can be felt by the Ukrainian people."

n NEWS A MECHANIC from Staple Hill drove across Europe to take aid donations to Ukraine. Nathan Calder and his friend Wesley Hawkes borrowed a van to deliver hundreds of items brought by residents to Emersons Green Village Hall, from first aid kits and nappies to helmets and bulletproof vests. Nathan decided to make the trip after taking some donations to the village hall and helping load the first lorry and vans to head for Ukraine. He said: "I was watching the news and couldn't believe what was happening. I had to do something." Wes, who lived in Mangotsfield before moving to Yate, borrowed a van through a work contact and set up a crowdfunding page called The Long Drive, asking for £1,500 to cover the costs of the trip. Within a few days the pair had reached their target and were ready to go. Picking up donations from the Swan pub at Tytherington as well as Emersons Green Village Hall, they set off on the night of March 6, spending 30 hours on the road to Dover, through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Poland before reaching the border with Ukraine in the early hours of March 8. On the way they drove through snow storms and saw some "off the scale" driving, with several close calls with lorries pulling out to overtake, and speeding cars on Polish roads. Driving over high ground on their way to the border, Nathan saw flashes from distant explosions in the sky, coming from the direction of northern Ukraine. He said: "The whole sky was lit up. I was trying to convince myself it was thunder, and starting to freak out." After arriving at the border and reporting to passport control they were waved into an area inside Ukraine, where people with vans were waiting to unload

Friends witness Ukrainians' plight on dramatic aid trip were all staying to fight. "To see it on the news is one thing but to see it with your own eyes is completely different. "I've travelled around the world and seen all kinds of stuff, but for some reason this hit me for six. "We will both remember it for as long as we live." After returning across the border Nathan and Wes stopped to sleep at a Polish guest house, whose owner refused to charge them for their stay, knowing that they had come to deliver aid. Nathan said: "I just started crying as I started to reflect on what we'd seen. "We were driving home to our kids. "These people were living normal lives, and now they're destitute."

When the Ukrainians got to the three bags of military kit, Nathan said, "they put the first two in one of the vans and the last one they shared between them, because they were going back to a war zone to fight and didn't have proper kit – the helmets were like gold". Once they had emptied their van, Nathan and Wes were directed back to the border, alongside a queue of about 200 women and children waiting to cross into Poland, in freezing conditions, at 2am. Some were huddled around a fire for warmth and others were in vehicles. Just remembering the scene is emotional for Nathan, who has a six-month-old son, Devon, with wife Vicky. He said: "I saw a mother with three children, all holding hands so they didn't get lost. Over the last few weeks I’ve noticed a trend at our practices in Henleaze & Fishponds. We’re seeing more and more new patients, which is of course, hugely flattering and very welcome! Coincidentally, but not directly related, we’ve been considering how we greet both existing and new patients, our aim being to offer a friendly, warm and professional welcome to all. Now how we phrase our first question after welcoming our patient to the practice depends on a few things, essentially if we feel a light hearted or serious introduction is indicated. We’ll often ask “what brought you to see us today?” and wait to see if we get “my wife / the bus driver or my E-bike” or just a straight forward “my eyes are changing, can you help me?”. I love the way we, as humans, respond to this and I find the many nuances of our communication just wonderful! Sometimes patients do say well you asked for that, but I’m happy that we've broken the ice, our patient has relaxed and has shown their sense of humour! But don’t worry, we’re all too aware that sometimes our patients' eye concerns are such that humour is not appropriate, and instead ask “how can we help you?” One aspect we're keen to chat about is myopia. It’s slowly but surely being talked about more often. To summarise, myopia is distance blur, corrected by glasses or contact lenses, but your close up vision is usually clear. Does the increasing number of patients becoming myopic matter? Well yes we believe so, particularly as myopia often develops at or around early teen years, when some, but not all, patients of this age have a tendency to be less communicative with their parents. Now as a myope myself there are definite advantages to this (well I think so, but clearly I am biassed on this!), however the risk of eye health problems increases with the degree of myopia. The trend is that spending time on tech up close, phones particularly, can have a negative impact on our younger patients' eyes. The solution - book an appointment to see us for expert eye care and we’ll be happy to assess the eye health and myopia risk for each individual, as well as discuss the management options available. With all the demands that modern life puts on our eyes, it’s not surprising we’re seeing so many patients who’ve noticed a change in their vision. Whether your arms aren’t now long enough, your distance vision’s changing or if it’s increased screen time that’s causing a change in vision we’re here, ready and willing to help! Just contact our friendly team on the telephone, or visit our website and we’ll be happy to see you. We continue to offer COVID safe ways to choose your new glasses too! Although regulations have relaxed, which will come as a relief to so many, we recognise that a few of our patients still need to be cautious. To help us keep you all safe, we’re still asking you all to telephone first to book a time to come in. Please call our Henleaze practice on 0117 962 2474 or our Fishponds practice on 0117 965 4434.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Head teacher joins World Book Day dress-up IT was easier than usual at Mangotsfield Primary School's World Book Day event to answer one of the most popular questions from children's literature: Where's Wally? The popular character who hides in a variety of places in the Where's Wally books brushed shoulders with witches and wizards, fairytale princesses and superheroes for the celebration, part of the school's annual literacy week event promoting language, reading and writing. Children in Key Stage 2 had a special visit from author, poet and former Children's Laureate Michael Rosen, best known for his book We're Going on a Bear Hunt. Reception and Key Stage 1 came back into school in the evening to enjoy a bedtime story with their class teachers. Other activities included worship assemblies, sharing stories w and writing to authors.

Childminder closes after Ofsted finds rat traps in garden A STAPLE Hill childminder has closed her business after inspectors said children were allowed to play near rat traps, a pile of ladders and other hazards in the garden. Education watchdog Ofsted confirmed that the childminder had resigned her registration, after it announced it intended to take enforcement action and gave the setting the lowest rating of “inadequate” in every category. Inspectors said the Staple Hill woman and her assistant put children at “significant risk” by allowing them to play with “dirty, stagnant water that contains algae”, while toy pedal cars were found to be covered with sawdust containing bird mess. Ofsted says it cannot publish the name of the woman or her business, as childminders have to consent to have these details made public. Instead the business is only identified by its registration number with the watchdog, EY397559.

Ofsted's report, published on March 9, said the safety and welfare of the 12 children, aged three to ten, in the childminder’s care was “compromised”. Inspector Victoria Nicolson said: “The childminder and her assistant put children at significant risk, as they do not identify risks that are in the garden. “They do not clean the resources or check the garden before they allow children to go outside to play. “The childminder has hazardous rodent traps situated where children play. The childminder allows children to play with dirty, stagnant water that contains algae. “The ride-on toy cars that children play with have sawdust over them, which contains bird faeces. The childminder does not recognise the health and safety implications for children. This is despite previous concerns being raised at the last inspection about the childminder’s ability

It said she did not provide a challenging curriculum that extended children’s learning or prepared them for school. But the report added: “Children are confident and they behave well. They know the routines that are in place and happily tidy away the toys when they have finished playing with them. “Parents say that they are happy with the care that their children receive. “They say that their children enjoy going to the childminder’s

house and have friends that attend.” Ofsted had raised concerns at two previous inspections, in January 2020, when it found the provider did not have a valid paediatric first-aid training certificate, and in August last year, when concerns were raised over supervision and failure to identify and remove hazards, leaving children "at significant risk". Two previous inspections of the business, which was first registered in 2009, found it met requirements. After the latest inspection on February 1 the childminder received inadequate ratings for overall effectiveness, quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. An Ofsted spokesperson told the Voice: "We can confirm that the childminder has resigned their registration." By Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

n NEWS A PROJECT to resurface one of Downend's busiest roads is well underway. South Gloucestershire Council contractors moved on to the A432 Badminton Road in early March and were due to finish the project before the end of the month. Working overnight, between 8pm and 6am, the resurfacing scheme is distinct from the work by Wales & West Utilities at the nearby junction with Cleeve Hill and Cleeve Road to replace a gas main, which has resulted in long queues at temporary traffic lights. Voice reader Bruce Gibbs, who took a picture of a road planing machine removing the old surface, said: "All the machines and vehicles are very well illuminated with lights of many colours – red, yellow, blue, green as well as white. "I was impressed by the low level of noise – all you could hear was a low hum from the machines. "The machine looked like a huge dinosaur with a long neck spewing out the waste material into the awaiting

Road resurfacing under way as new projects announced

Bruce Gibbs captured the resurfacing team in action on Badminton Road wagons. "What a difference in the road surface now – all smooth and quiet to drive on." The project is part of the council's four-year, £174 million road improvement programme. A number of other projects in the Downend area for the coming year were announced during March. They include plans for traffic

calming measures on North Street. A council spokesperson said: “Our engineers are currently preparing designs for a potential traffic calming scheme on North Street in Downend. "This is in response to an investigation into collisions and speeding, and safety concerns raised over access to Christ Church Infant School, including

by the local members for Frenchay and Downend. “The proposals will be subject to consultation over the coming months, which will offer an opportunity for people to comment on the plans before the scheme is finalised.” Frenchay & Downend ward councillor Ben Burton said: "As well as resurfacing the likes of Queensholm Crescent, Oakdale Court and Cleevedale, it is fantastic to see almost £75,000 being invested in improving local footpaths. "It is important the Council is providing the infrastructure to help keep our area moving, not just in cars, but by foot, by bike and by public transport and I am pleased we are continuing to demonstrate that through the programme."

How did my husband get killer disease? THE widow of a Staple Hill man who died without knowing he had asbestos-related cancer is hoping former colleagues can help discover if he was exposed to the material at work. Roland Clapp died aged 71 in December. It was only after his death that it emerged he had been suffering from peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the abdomen. Peritoneal mesothelioma is commonly linked to inhaling or ingesting tiny fibres of asbestos, but symptoms can take up to 50 years to appear. Cancer Research UK says only 7% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma survive for five or more years. Roland's wife Brenda, 70, has instructed specialist lawyers to investigate where he could have been exposed to asbestos during his working life. They want to hear from anyone who worked with Roland at the Port of Bristol Authority in the late 1960s, Robert Hobbs during the late 1960s and early 1970s, St Anne's Board Mill from the mid-1970s until its closure in 1980 and the Bristol Royal Infirmary from around 2003 until 2020.

Brenda and Roland Clapp Brenda, a carer, said: "I met Roland through work in 2001 and he really was a really wonderful man. He was such a loving and caring husband and it still really hasn’t sunk in that he is no longer here. "At no point before he died did we know Roland had cancer. He was still active and enjoying his retirement. He was a huge Bristol City fan and he was into football in big way. "He also spent a lot of time with his step-

grandchildren, who he picked up from school most days. "We still had so many plans for the future. "It’s been hard enough trying to come to terms with the fact that we’ll never get to spend more time together, let alone the shock he had mesothelioma. It’s sad to think that he died without knowing about the condition. "Nothing will change what has happened, but I just feel I deserve some answers. It would be fantastic if people could come forward and help us – it really would be massively appreciated." Specialist lawyer Rebecca Buxton, of Irwin Mitchell, who is representing Brenda, said there are about 2,700 cases of mesothelioma in the UK each year, with only 10% of those peritoneal mesothelioma. She said: "Roland’s death is another stark reminder of the terrible legacy that asbestos has created. Its use wasn’t just restricted to heavy industry but was widespread, including in public buildings." Anyone with information they think can help Brenda should contact Rebecca on 0117 926 1574 or email rebecca.buxton@ irwinmitchell.com.

Frenchay museum expansion approved FRENCHAY Village Museum is set to expand after being given planning permission for an extension. Councillors on South Gloucestershire's development management committee approved the scheme despite planning officers’ advice to reject it. Applicants the Frenchay Tuckett Society said the museum, in a historic former estate lodge, needed to expand because of a lack of suitable storage for artefacts or a toilet. Officers had said the "substantial scale and inappropriate design", with black vertical cladding material, would harm the building and its setting in a conservation area. But the meeting on March 3 heard it would be "absurd" to refuse the application on heritage grounds when hundreds of new homes were being built on the site of the former Frenchay Hospital next door. Members voted 6-3 to approve the plans after visiting the site for themselves. Officers told the meeting there was “insufficient substantial public benefit” to outweigh the harm the proposed two-storey extension and one-storey side extension would cause to the museum at Begbrook Park, which is classed as a “curtilage listed building” of the nearby Grade II-listed Frenchay Park House. Frenchay ward Winterbourne parish councillor Hugh Whatley told the committee that the volunteer-staffed museum has an international reputation.

He said: "The museum has amassed an impressive collection of nearly 1,000 objects and artefacts. "Space and environmental constraints prevent the proper conservation and display of many items. "Cramped spaces inhibit outreach – a school class group can’t be accommodated in one go." South Gloucestershire cabinet member and Frenchay & Downend ward councillor Ben Burton said: “Residents of Frenchay would find it absurd that this authority could approve the building of hundreds of new homes in the grounds of the old Frenchay Hospital site but would then refuse this modest and locally-supported application on heritage grounds. “There is significant public benefit to this proposal. The community has demonstrated astonishing commitment to the restoration of the existing building and the development of a relatively small but significant museum.” He said the design was sympathetic to its surroundings and would ensure the museum was fit for the future. Committee member Judy Adams (Con, Emersons Green) said: “They certainly need this extension so they can put lots more items on display and it would benefit them a lot by having an office on site. “I know it’s a listed building, which was fine years ago when it had lots of green space all around it, but it now has hundreds and hundreds of houses close by.”

The museum building now

An image given to planners of how the expanded building will look Brian Hopkinson (Con, Charlton & Cribbs) said an existing prefabricated 1960s detached garage, which will be demolished under the plans, looked “terrible”. Jayne Stansfield (Lib Dem, Thornbury) said the proposed materials for the extension "do appear to be inappropriate" for a building in a "very prominent

position". Calls from Cllr Stansfield and Tristan Clark (Lib Dem, Frampton Cotterell) to defer the decision so more suitable materials could be found were rejected. By Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Family fun afternoon

Children join anniversary celebrations

Children from St James Mangotsfield Messy Church planting trees YOUNG members of a Mangotsfield church have planted two trees to celebrate two milestones. The members of the St James church Messy Church group planted two new rowan trees, one to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and the other in celebration of the church's own 800th anniversary this year.

Picture: Chris Taylor

Over recent months work has been going on to tidy up the churchyard, including tree pruning and removing weeds and dead bushes. As well as the tree planting, a new design is being drawn up for the garden of remembrance and wild flower seeds are being spread to bring colour in the summer.

A FAMILY fun afternoon is being held at Christ Church Downend as part of a weekend of community events held by Bristol churches. The free event will be held on the May Bank Holiday Monday on May 2, in the main church building from 2pm-4.30pm. It will include inflatables, games, face painting, a craft zone, a café area and more. The family fun afternoon is part of The Noise, an annual event run by Bristol churches which will also include a range of community volunteering projects across the bank holiday weekend. A free afternoon cream tea with entertainment for older people will be held in the main church building from 2-4pm on Saturday April 30. All are welcome.

Food waste shock PEOPLE are being asked to make more use of their food bins and recycling boxes after a survey found almost half of waste going into South Gloucestershire's black bins could be recycled. The council takes samples from black bins across the district to find out what is being thrown into them by residents. The annual survey found 44% of the contents of black bins could have been recycled in kerbside collections. And food waste made up 29% of the total amount of waste being thrown away, despite having dedicated weekly collections, while black bins are only picked up once per fortnight. The council said that while some types of food waste, such as fruit and veg peelings, eggshells and tea bags, were generally put out for recycling, many residents were still throwing bags of potatoes, loaves of bread and jars with food inside into the black bins. Food that is collected for recycling in South Gloucestershire is processed in Bristol by GENeco, which extracts biogas to generate electricity and uses leftover material as a non-chemical farming fertiliser. Council cabinet member Rachael Hunt said: "Recycling our food waste is easy, so we really want to see people taking more care to ensure it is placed in the correct bin. “Recycle all of your food waste – plate scrapings, leftover pet food, food that’s off or past its best, peelings, eggshells, tea bags and coffee grounds. If you have a bag of veg that can’t be eaten or a mouldy loaf, you don’t need to take it out of the bag, just put it straight into your food recycling bin.” New outdoor food waste containers and indoor kitchen caddies can be ordered online at www.southglos.gov.uk/recycling, where there are also details of other services such as free disposable nappy collections.

Allotment vandals cause 'damage and heartache' ALLOTMENT holders in Downend are appealing to parents to help them stop teenagers from vandalising and stealing from their plots. Police say they are investigating five reported incidents of damage, burglary and attempted burglary of sheds at the Dial Lane allotments, off Chestnut Road next to the Co-op car park. Allotment secretary Barbara Julian said: "These vandals are local and have parents, grandparents, sisters etc, who must be aware of what these youths are doing in their spare time! "They seem to think it's their right to cause as much damage and heartache as they can to other local folk who enjoy their allotments." An Avon and Somerset police

Ssome of the damage caused by youths targeting Downed allotment holders spokesperson said that a series of incidents had been reported between February 22 and 28 and were jointly the subject of an investigation. The spokesperson said: "Tools were stolen from two sheds, including drill bits, screwdrivers and a knife. On one occasion a group of teenagers were seen running off from the allotments towards Downend

Road and the local shops. Neighbourhood officers urge anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour at the allotments to call it in immediately. "Ring 999 if an offence is under way or suspects are still in the area. Otherwise, call 101 as soon as possible." Anyone with information about the attacks or those responsible is being urged to call

101, quoting the crime reference number 5222 045 738. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111. A previous spate of attacks happened during 2020. Details of the latest incidents have been shared with Neighbourhood Watch groups, who are being urged to be on the alert.

My story started with immobility and fear. I had reached a weight where I was walking with a stick and was completely out of dress size options. I joined Slimming World as a lifeline as I knew I had to put myself at the front of the queue in my priorities for once . My path has certainly not been the motorway route but I lost over 15 stone to get to target in 2015. Lockdown was difficult for me both physically because of health issues and mentally, but I am addressing my gain and getting back to target. I have a bit left but know I will get there by sticking to the plan and staying to group. It has been a mental battle for me with long established habits as well as the physical changes to the things that I ate. The tools that I have had from Slimming World have helped my resilience and strength in tough times. I have had times because of ill health and operations where I have had to be away from Slimming World but on returning the same warm welcome class are there who help you focus for the next week, celebrate your achievements and support you during difficult weeks. Since losing weight I have been able to travel more, do things that were out of my ability before such as tobogganing, white water rafting and hiking. Slimming World really has been my lifeline and I am not ashamed to say that I still need that support and cannot think of a time where I wont. Ali

n NEWS A WOMAN who survived domestic abuse is taking on the London Marathon to raise money and awareness of the charity which has supported her. Amy Yapp is sharing her story to help charity Refuge – and to encourage other women in abusive relationships to seek help. Amy, a former Downend School pupil who grew up in the area and now lives in Fishponds, found herself in a relationship where she was subjected to physical, psychological and emotional abuse over four years. She was beaten, isolated from her family and friends and lost control of her finances. Amy said: "When I look back, I do not recognise the person I had become at all. I was conditioned how to behave and even speak. Living by rules which I was not allowed to break. "Compliments turned into insults, then eventually insults turned into physical abuse. "You say 'oh, that will never happen to me' but after experiencing all that, it showed me how anyone can be affected." Amy left her abuser, who has

Decluttering does wonders for mental health PHYSICAL environments influence emotions, cognition, and behaviors. Cluttered environments can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, depressing and stressful. They can cause friction between household members and create feelings of not being in control. Clutter causes negativity. If your hallway has become a dumping ground, every time you come into your home it will feel negative rather than positive. If the clutter continues into the kitchen these negative feelings continue, and so on and so forth. I have been running the declutter service for over 10 years and thankfully have seen many positive changes in recycling. It is a great resource, and if an item can be recycled it is far easier to let it go. There is no harm in asking for help and people find that once they’ve tackled their clutter, they feel that a weight has been lifted, their mood improves and they enjoy a sense of freedom. Reorganising and decluttering and your home is not about making a ‘show home’. It is about managing your belongings and making your home an inviting, pleasurable place to live in and somewhere to feel proud of. Whether you have hoarding tendencies or are just fed up with general mess and clutter, help is at hand to get you motivated. FM DeClutter Services provide a friendly tailor made service that works with you, at your pace, with empathy and understanding. support groups and a 24-hour helpline offering advice. While Amy never needed to stay in the charity's accommodation, its helpline provided invaluable support when she needed to talk to someone outside her family and friends. She said: "I never realised when I was in that situation that there was so much help out there – during those critical moments, having someone to reassure you is so important." A student paramedic studying at Gloucestershire University, Amy also works for supported living provider Aspire in Downend, Staple Hill and Fishponds. She has run in a number of distance races but has never taken on a marathon before, and when she discovered that Refuge had places for fundraisers in the London Marathon it

was a chance to both tick off a challenge from her 'bucket list' and "turn something that was negative into something positive". Amy said: "I would like to repay my gratitude to Refuge for the much-needed help and support they gave me. "And if just one woman recognises the warning signs of domestic violence and finds the courage to get in touch with Refuge, then that is potentially one life saved." Amy aims to raise £2,000 for Refuge at the marathon, which takes place in October. To support Amy's appeal visit www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/amyyapp98. For more information about the work of Refuge visit the website www.refuge.org.uk. The charity's free national domestic abuse 24-hour helpline is on 0808 2000 247.

An image produced for developer Aequus showing what the new homes could look like

Frenchay homes plan set to go ahead PLANS for 30 new homes in Frenchay are set to be approved by South Gloucestershire Council, without going before a planning committee. The houses and flats are set to be built by Aequus, the building company owned by neighbouring Bath & North East Somerset Council. South Gloucestershire opted to go into partnership with Aequus to build new homes on land it owns, rather than setting up its own building company. The land at Malmains Drive was previously set aside to be the site of the new Frenchay Primary School, which is now being built on part of the former Frenchay Hospital site instead. It is one of six council-owned pieces of land earmarked for housing projects, which also include land at Vinney Green, between Mangotsfield and Emersons Green. The initial plans for the site submitted in 2020 received objections from 35 people, many of whom lived nearby. The plans were revised last year, since when two objections have been made. Eleven of the homes will be classed as affordable – three flats and five houses will be available for social rent, with another three houses available under shared ownership schemes. A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said the application was due to be approved by officers using delegated powers as it had not been called to a council planning committee by any of the local members. Council cabinet member for corporate resources Ben Burton, who is a Frenchay & Downend ward councillor, has already spoken in favour of the proposed development and the joint venture approach to house building. The approval process is currently waiting on the completion of a legal agreement between Aequus and the council on financial contributions towards local improvements to be made as part of the planning permission. A recent meeting of B&NES heard the deal was being funded by a commercial development loan from South Gloucestershire. The partnership with Aequus is intended to provide "higher than market standard" housing on earmarked sites, with at least a third of the properties classed as affordable. Speaking last year South Glos cabinet councillor Rachael Hunt said the joint ventures "give us greater input and influence to support our goals around community shaping without over-exposing the council and taxpayers’ money to unnecessary risk". Wholly owned by B&NES Council, Aequus was set up to develop, deliver, own and manage property for both the rental and private market. It has previously converted a Keynsham office block into 95 flats and is set to create new council houses for B&NES. Includes reporting by Stephen Sumner, Local Democracy Reporting Service

n NEWS A TEAM from a Downend primary school did themselves proud in the final of a national science and technology challenge. The Voice reported last month that Stanbridge Primary School had won the regional round of the Institution of Engineering and Technology's First Lego League tournament. It meant the pupils were invited to take part in the competition's England and Wales Final at the end of February. The science and technology challenge, which is aimed at nine to 16-year-old schoolchildren, asks teams to build a robot to tackle a series of missions and create an innovative solution to a real-world problem. This year the challenge was all about transporting cargo. The team were driven up to Harrogate in Yorkshire the day before the competition and had an early night before the big day. The final kicked off with an opening ceremony where all the teams were invited on to the stage, before they set up a pit area and took part in their first robot match.

School's pride at robot team's finals performance The Stanbridge robot team with mascot Simon the Owl at the national First Lego League final. Putting their new coding to the test, the Stanbridge robot beat the team's highest score from the Bristol regional competition in their first match. The children then had to present an innovation project and robot design to the judges, before starting a series of challenges. The team took part in two more robot matches, recording

two almost perfect rounds, before heading to the awards ceremony. Stanbridge computing teacher Andy McGovern said: "Although the team did not win any awards, the CEO of the IET did mention that our mascot (Simon the owl) was the best dressed! The whole team had a fantastic day and are extremely proud for all they have achieved.

"We would like to thank the Stanbridge community for all the support the team has received – especially the families of the team who took the time to come and support on the day in Harrogate. We look forward to the next IET Lego League competition!" Head teacher Kirby Littlewood said: "We are so very proud of all of the children that took part in the competition. Their skill and knowledge as digital engineers is astounding. "Not only this, throughout all of the practice and in putting their presentations together, they developed in resilience and friendship, overcoming challenges and problem-solving collaboratively. "They truly embodied our school motto – Be Brave Not Perfect!"

n DOWNEND FOLK CLUB REVIEW SUTHERING ‘If We Turn Away’ Album Launch (with support from Dom Prag) Friday 18th February 2022, Frenchay Village Hall THE word 'suthering' means 'the sound of the wind through the trees', apparently. On the day that Storm Eunice battered her way through the country, there could have been no more appropriate band to headline our February show. Indeed, at various times throughout the day, it looked as though Suthering might not make it. Julu Irvine and Heg Brignall, who make up the duo, moved to Devon from Bristol just before the March 2020 lockdown, and their corner of the world took a good bit of Eunice’s brunt. And then there was the milk lorry that overturned on the M5. But make it they did, and the sizeable audience were glad that they did. Joined by Olivia Dunn on violin and Sarah Ricketts on double-bass, the duo were here to launch their debut album If We Turn Away into the world. As the audience descended into an expectant hush after a rapturous, almost raucous, welcome Julu and Heg took them on a journey filled with tales both true and mythical… stories of the fantastic and the everyday. Partners in life as well as in music, the chemistry between the pair was obvious from

the first number, Blood and Gold, delivered unplugged and a cappella from the front of the stage. Their voices intertwining together with delicious crunchy harmonies a plenty, Julu and Heg showed that they are right up there with some of the very best singers treading boards of the folk clubs and arts centres at the moment. Each of them are great singers, but it’s when they sing together that the magic happens. It’s not only the voices, though, as Julu (flute and guitar) and Heg (piano) demonstrate what fine instrumentalists they are too, as do the band that they’ve brought to accompany them. It’s a dream come true, they tell us, to have their own 'girl-band', and their sense of excitement is palpable. The songs themselves are of an exceptionally high quality. Stand-outs include the first two singles from the album; Gather came to the

pair when they were going through a dry songwriting patch after they’d first relocated, and speaks of attempting to overcome that sense of displacement, while Kingfisher is an ode to the bird that they’d spot during long lockdown walks and became sign of hope. But each and every song is a lovely thing. Don’t take our word for it, get a copy of the album! Before Suthering took to the stage, the Downend crowd were treated to a glimpse of another rising star… and what an impression he made! Dom Prag is about to launch a debut album of his own, Needle & Thread, and it’s another one that’s definitely worth getting hold of. Dom’s short set included mostly traditional songs, with Oakey Strike Evictions a particular stand-out which brought whoops from the crowd, along with a self-penned song, Come All You Fine Young People and a nice take on Richard Thompson’s 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, and prompted many of the folk club regulars to remark that he is the best support artist they’d ever seen in the club’s almost eight year history… quite an accolade and one that surely means that Dom will return for a headline show of his own in the not too distant future. So, Eunice howled outside and battered the doors of the church, but try as she might she could not put a stop to the beautiful things happening within its walls. n DOWNEND FOLK CLUB PREVIEW MAIREARAD GREEN & ANNA MASSIE (With support from Chris Elliott and Caitlin Jones) Friday 22nd April 2022, Christ Church Downend DOWNEND Folk Club plays host to two of Scotland’s most revered multi-instrumentalists this month as Mairearad Greenand & Anna Massie return to the club for a long-awaited second time after captivating the audience way back in 2016. Having played alongside each other for over ten years, the pair revel in an intuitive approach to each other’s musical ideas and interpretations, and an “almost telepathic communication” on stage (Hi-Arts), effortlessly showcasing the fruits of duo partnership to the highest level, creating “music more than the sum of just two parts” (The Scotsman). Mairearad and Anna both grew up in the Scottish Highlands amidst very similar musical backgrounds (most notably, mandolin playing Dads!), and so share an innate understanding of Scottish culture and music. As a duo they have enjoyed many successes, including five stars in The Scotsman and high praise from KT Tunstall, becoming a much-loved live act. The duo’s fourth album, called Farran which is the Scots word for the starboard side of a boat, is to represent exactly how this virtuosic duo perform live. Opening the evening’s entertainment will be Chris Elliott & Caitlin Jones. Described by Bright

Young Folk as "experienced storytellers" who bring "timeless quality" to their music, Chris and Cait have been playing music together since they met in 2014. They have recently released their debut album, Carry Me Home. Both proudly from Staffordshire, they bring a mix of traditional and self-penned ballads about place, identity, old and new. Driving guitar and bouzouki accompany haunting whistles and harmonium along with intricate and warm vocal harmonies. Expect to hear songs written for and collected from all around the Midlands and beyond, accompanied by the heartfelt human stories that inspired them. With their charming storytelling and warm Midlands humour, the pair love to take audiences to "an area of diverse landscapes, history and traditions, a patchwork of Staffordshire and beyond”. Tickets for the event, which takes place at Christ Church Downend on Friday 22nd April

2022, are available online at downendfolkclub. com and from Melanie’s Kitchen in Downend (cash only). They are priced at £14 each in advance or £16 on the door. There will be a bar, stocking cider, soft drinks, wine, hot drinks and locally-brewed real ale from Hambrook-based Hop Union Brewery (formerly GWB). Audience members are encouraged to bring their own glass/mug/tankard/bucket, as well as reusable bottles for water, as part of the club’s drive to be more environmentally aware. There is a 50p discount for those bringing their own receptacles. There will also be sweet treats available at the bar courtesy of the Radstockbased Great Cake Company, as well as the “stealth raffle” which helps to fund the support artists. n NEWS A METAL detectorist from Staple Hill has uncovered a medal commemorating a royal visit to Bristol, among a hoard of coins from Victorian and more recent times. David Upton found 320 coins, ranging from farthings and halfpennies to silver threepenny bits and half crowns, in a metal pot buried on land in the Hambrook area in March. The oldest he has identified so far dates from 1830, while the newest is a George VI two shilling piece dating from 1940 – a coin which could be spent in shops as recently as June 1993. Placed at the bottom were three royal souvenirs – a coin celebrating Queen Victoria's coronation in 1838, a silver brooch from her diamond jubilee in 1897 and a medal struck specially for a visit by Victoria to Durdham Down in 1899. An inscription on it says: "In commemoration of the loving welcome given by the children of Bristol to Queen Victoria on Durdham Down Bristol – Nov 15 1899, Herbert Ashman Lord Mayor."

The commemorative medal found near Hambrook Ashman was Bristol's first Lord Mayor, with the title created in 1899, and he was knighted by the Queen during the visit to Bristol commemorated by the medal. Lego, craft and dance show to help Dave A COUPLE who went to school with a Downend dad who is fighting cancer have organised a charity show to raise money for his treatment. Dawn and Luke Beedle have organised the Brick and Craft Show at Mangotsfield School on April 3 as part of the huge community effort to help David Gibbs, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive cancer of the brain and spinal cord, in September. Dave, who lives in Staple Hill with his wife Gemma and their daughter, is about to start a third round of chemotherapy, having already had surgery to remove 95% of the tumour – but has been told that, even with chemo and radiotherapy, it is likely to grow back. His family have discovered a new treatment called a

personalised cancer vaccine, which uses unique genetic information to help the immune system attack the cancer cells. A treatment centre in Germany has recently confirmed that a vaccine can be made for Dave, and it should be ready by June – but the treatment is not available on the NHS, and a massive fundraising campaign to raise the £150,000 cost has now passed the £96,000 mark. Dawn, who is head of art at Mangotsfield School, and Luke, who is a member of Bristolbased Lego enthusiasts group GurtLUG, have pulled together the creative talents of their friends and contacts to put on the fun day. As well as some eye-catching Lego creations there will be a mini disco from Dancin' Tots, a visit from an Avon Fire and

Rescue team in a fire engine, a wide variety of art and craft stalls, face painting and a raffle at the event, which runs from 10.30am until 3.30pm. Dawn said: "Luke and I went to school with Gemma and Dave. Like them we are childhood sweethearts, having met at school, and have a young family. "On hearing the news about Dave, we made a donation straight away, however I did not feel it was enough, so we came up with a few ideas to fundraise for the family. "We are so amazed by the generosity of the community, giving up their time and raffle and tombola prizes. "The Brick and Craft Show is ideal for a family outing, offering entertainment for all the family and raise money for a great cause." A recent fundraiser Emersons Green Village Hall raised over £2,000 for the appeal, and other events planned include a Vegas night at Lyde Green Community Centre on March 26 from 7.30pm-midnight (tickets from tickettailor.com/events/ lgca/642449) and workout classes at The Gym Longwell Green on April 9 from 8.30am1.30pm (book by emailing dan. cole@thegymgroup.com). One of Dave's friends is staging a 24-hour cycle challenge in April, with its own fundraising page at justgiving.

Dawn and Luke Beedle com/crowdfunding/cyclingdavesbrainfund. The appeal's main online fundraising page remains open for donations at justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/davesbrainfund. Dave has thanked all those who are supporting him. He said: "I'll be honest, chemo is not easy and it leaves me very tired. "I will continue to fight, thanks to the support of my friends & family." Dave is also encouraging people to support charity Brain Tumour Research's campaign for increased national investment to support vital research into the disease. Its appeal can be found at www.braintumourresearch. org/donate.

New services for Bristol cancer patients A CENTRE for cancer patients and their families is expanding its services and is urging people who could benefit to find out more. The National Garden Scheme Macmillan Wellbeing Centre at Southmead Hospital Bristol is running workshops and talks throughout April for people living with cancer and their carers. The centre opened seven years ago but had to provide more online and telephone services during the pandemic, while adapting its face to face services for vulnerable patients. Now improvements at the

NGS centre, which provides a place for people affected by cancer to come for information and support, are being funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and Southmead Hospital Charity. 'Cancer navigator' and former support worker Sue Mitchell said: "Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a time of real uncertainty for all concerned. It can also be a really lonely time. "The NGS Macmillan Wellbeing Centre is there to provide vital reassurance and support when people need it most."

Sue provides support for new and late diagnosis cancer patients, people receiving palliative care and their families, including support and advice on everything from benefits, wills, and funeral planning to providing free parking passes for hospital visits. She said cancer patients who are being treated at Southmead Hospital should ask to see a cancer navigator as soon as they can, adding: "I am here to help and provide support wherever I can. "The more people who know about the service, the more I

can hopefully help." Support centre manager Rachel Townsley said the centre was "an oasis of calm" for patients, their families and friends providing advice and services on both journeys to recovery and end-of-life care. The building is open for booked appointments and anyone who is affected by cancer can call 0117 414 7051 on weekdays or email wellbeingcentre@nbt.nhs.uk. Christ Church Downend

EVER found it curious that Christianity has a form of execution as its symbol? You might know that Jesus Christ died on a cross, but do you know why? Firstly, the death of Jesus was no accident, it was the plan of God. It is an essential element of the Christian faith because Jesus was the Son of God who came to die for us. We have all acted wrongly towards God and others and are under the just condemnation of God. Yet God so loved the world that Jesus came to take our place. He suffered the punishment for all our wrong, he paid the price of our forgiveness. Secondly, the cross is only half the story, there is another crucial side to the Christian coin. If Jesus simply died, he would be no different to any other person, religious leader or not. But the gloriously good news of the Bible and Christianity is that on the third day of his death, Jesus rose to life! God fully accepted the sacrifice that Jesus made on our behalf. Jesus bought us victory over all we are guilty of, over death and over his enemy. We can know life united with Christ now, that lasts beyond the grave and into a perfect new world. I’d like the open tomb of Jesus to join the symbol of the cross, but I guess it’s not so easy to represent. However, symbols are not what’s important but rather faith in the one whom they represent. Will you join us to discover more?

Easter

services & events Celebrate Easter with us at Downend Baptist Church As a church, we passionately believe that the hope offered to billions of Christians across the world because of the message of Easter is hope for the entire world. Like all our friends in churches across our area, the weekend from 15th -18th April will therefore be much more than

just a long, hopefully sunny bank holiday. It will be the key point in our calendar where we celebrate the events of Jesus’ death and resurrection and contemplate together what these events mean for us and our community: locally nationally and internationally, today. It may be that this is a question you’ve never really given much thought to. Or it may be one that you’ve considered irrelevant. If that’s the case, you’re not on your own. We believe however that it’s never a bad time to think about these things and as a church community we are dedicated to being a welcoming place for everyone, always. We are a group of all ages, with all kinds

of life experiences, who together are exploring more of what this message means for us. We don’t do pressure, but simply seek to be and belong together in a way that makes it possible to confront the big things of life and faith. And we hope to have great fun along the way as well. So, whether you’re someone who is starting out in your exploration of these things, simply curious, or you’ve been thinking about these things for a long time, we would absolutely love to welcome you as we celebrate Easter together this year. Our Good Friday Service will offer an opportunity for quiet reflection as we remember the

Mayor's warning over e-scooter Russia link METRO Mayor Dan Norris has warned he will pull the plug on the company behind the region's e-scooter trial unless it severs any ties to Russia. The West of England mayor is due to meet the chief executive of Sweden-based Voi Technology after it was reported that one of the company's major shareholders has close links with an oligarch sanctioned by the European Union over links to the Putin regime. Voi has since said it was reevaluating all its partners in light of the Ukraine conflict. Mr Norris recently announced that the e-scooter trial was being extended to the end of November in the region, following a request from the Department for Transport.

But he said Voi's actions will “strongly affect my thinking regarding the future use” of the firm’s electric two-wheelers, which are a common sight in the Downend area. In response, Voi says it has ceased all business activities in Russia and its ally Belarus, and is reevaluating all its partners in light of the war to take “all actions deemed necessary to comply with sanctions”, including removing shareholders who “no longer align with our core values”. Mr Norris held a Zoom meeting with Fredrik Hjelm, CEO of Voi Technology, on March 15. After what the mayor described as a "frank and candid" discussion, they agreed to meet

later face to face in the UK. The mayor spoke out after media reports that Russian businessman Alexander Eliseev owned shares in Voi worth about £10.8 million. Mr Eliseev is chairman of shipping firm Globaltruck, which is reported to be partly owned by the Russian state, and a Swedish newspaper said he also has business links with Alexei Mordashov, an oligarch who has been sanctioned by the EU over the invasion. Mr Norris said: “It is vital that Voi do due diligence when it comes to any possible connection between their company and the Putin regime. If there are links they must end them. West of England residents expect nothing less and I made this abundantly clear. “I expect all businesses to be doing the same. My message is stark but important: if you are in any way complicit in the horrors being perpetrated in Ukraine right now, you must and will be held to account”. Mr Hjelm told a Swedish news website he had been in contact with Mr Eliseev, who is Voi’s 12th largest shareholder, and was trying to "find a solution or a transaction" to solve the problem. A Voi spokesperson said:

“Following the Russian invasion, Voi publicly communicated its decision to cease all business activities in Russia and Belarus, including the reselling of refurbished vehicles. “In regards to investors, in order to ensure consistency with our aims and values as a company, Voi conducts background checks on all our investors before agreeing on terms with them. “None of our investors were under any sanctions when we accepted their investment, and, at the time of writing, none are currently under any sanctions. “We are currently reevaluating all our partners in light of the recent developments in Ukraine and will take any and all actions deemed necessary to comply with sanctions. “This includes the removal of shareholders should they no longer align with our core values. We will always abide by any laws or sanctions that are in place. “Alongside many international businesses, we believe Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a severe violation of international law and we stand on the side of democracy and the Ukrainian people at this time.” By Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

New deputy police commissioner THE Avon & Somerset police and crime commissioner has appointed a deputy. Claire Hiscott, a former Bristol City Council cabinet member who is the area chairman for Bristol and Gloucestershire Conservatives, is tasked with assisting PCC Mark Shelford, increasing engagement with residents and the policing family, and ensuring "continuity in unforeseen circumstances". Her appointment to the three-day-a-week role, with an annual salary of £39,051 – 45% of the PCC's £86,700 salary – was confirmed by the Police and Crime Panel on March 17. Claire, a former Horfield ward city councillor who trained as a pharmacist and has just finished a long stint supporting the NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme, is a former school governor and is currently a trustee and safeguarding lead for Bristol Old Vic. She said: “I’m motivated to tackle inequality and increase opportunities for all; I see policing and criminal justice as an area where there is disproportionality and inequality in outcomes for different groups in society. “I’m really focussed on protecting the most vulnerable groups in our society including the elderly, people with mental health issues and women and girls, particularly when it comes to violence against women and girls. From working in my pharmacy, I’ve interacted with people from all walks of life and understand how health, mental health and the circumstances they find themselves in can be influenced by their education, affluence and family life." n NEWS FROM YOUR LOCAL MP

Helping Ukraine in its hour of need CURRENTLY, my thoughts and prayers are of course with those who are enduring the ongoing invasion in Ukraine. The impact of the Western sanctions, which I fully support, should not be underestimated. Ordinary Russians are now feeling the financial pinch with dramatically increased interest rates and a plunging currency exchange rate, causing substantial hardship to the people of Russia. The Government has advised against all travel to Ukraine and Russia – and rightfully provided broad-ranging assistance and support to the people of Ukraine, both in terms of military support and humanitarian aid to those who remain – and refuge to those who have fled the conflict. The ongoing situation in Ukraine is a stark reminder of just how fragile peace and security can be – and why we should never take our freedoms and liberties for granted. It prompts us to reflect on our own defence capabilities and the vital role our country is playing (and

will continue to play) in protecting ourselves and our Nato allies. Sadly, in my view, the Western world has in recent years given the impression that we are in retreat and unwilling to stay the course and honour our defence and security responsibilities. We recently saw the disgraceful and premature withdrawal from Afghanistan and previously from Iraq, which led to the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the rise of Daesh in Iraq. Britain is one of the few Nato members which spends more than 2% of GDP on defence. Our world-class defence industry has a substantial presence in our local area, with Airbus, Rolls-Royce, GKN, BAE Systems, MBDA and Boeing being important local employers – as well as circa 8,000 MOD civil servants operating from DE&S Abbey Wood. In Parliament on March 8 I was privileged to hear Ukrainian President Zelensky deliver his powerful, historic address, and it was certainly a moment I shall never forget. On March 15, I spoke in the Commons Ukraine debate and asked Colonel Bob Stewart MP how we can best militarily support the Ukrainians whilst remaining mindful of the risks of stoking an escalation. On additional military support, he suggested that the deployment of MiG-29 fighter jets, piloted by Ukrainian pilots, may be required. The following day in Prime Minister’s Questions, I also asked the Deputy Prime

Jack Lopresti,

MP for Filton & Bradley Stoke Minister to confirm that we will continue to deliver military aid and support to Ukraine and that we will supply the Starstreak anti-air missiles necessary to destroy Russian fighter jets. He confirmed that the Government is exploring the possibility of donating the Starstreak anti-air missiles. I am incredibly proud of the humanitarian support and fundraising which is taking place in the constituency. From the bank in Filton, to the management team at Cribbs Causeway, I am moved by the huge fundraising and support efforts being made. I am maintaining regular contact with Ministers in the Foreign Office to identify what is most needed and where best for it to be delivered – and I am proud that members of our local communities are so keen to help our Ukrainian friends in this hour of desperate need.

Awards for Staple Hill skaters ELEVEN young people who attend skateboard sessions at Staple Hill's YOUF Centre have received awards. The annual South Gloucestershire Youth Awards were celebrated at the centre in Page Road, with more than 65 young people and youth workers from across the district gathering to celebrate achievement. The 11 from the Staple Hill, Downend and Mangotsfield area included Lacie Hobbs, Jemima Collier-King and Alice Eden, who have been attending the YOU Foundation skateboard sessions, which are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, since the first week. They were presented with awards for the new skills they have learnt, as well as putting forward the idea of running a girls-only hour to allow other girls looking to get into skateboarding more space to try the sport. Music at the awards was provided by Staple Hill band Insurgent, made up of

Alfie Stubbs, Michael McIntyre-Nash, Oscar Neville and Reuben Stowe-Masters, who played a combination of original and cover songs. The band has been using the music studio at the YOUF Centre since 2017 when they met youth workers and got involved in a music workshop in Page Park. The event in late February had an Oscars theme and the YOUF Centre was given a red carpet, with award winners given statuettes. YOUF Centre manager Rob Sharp said: "The past two years have been a difficult time

for young people, as many youth centres were repeatedly unable to open due to national and local lockdowns, but the evening proved that they were able to overcome and achieve many great things. "It was great to see so many young people able to socialise again and have a great time. "It was fantastic to hear about all the different projects young people had been involved in at other centres and how they'd achieved their awards. "I'm really looking forward to next year's event!"

Children get a taste of ancient Greek and Roman life

A PRIMARY school brought the past back to life to help children learn how to be historians. Pupils in years 3 and 4 at Christ Church Junior School have been investigating what life was like in ancient Roman times and were visited by two Roman visitors for a special day, where children had the opportunity to dress up, examine artefacts and take part in a mock Roman battle. Children in Years 5 and 6 went further back in time to study the ancient Greeks. Teachers organised a special Greek day, where pupils learnt about how the ancient Greeks dressed, how to write the letters of the Greek alphabet and what a range of authentic Greek foods taste like. Deputy head teacher Alex Desmond said: "They mainly found it delicious but the olives and taramasalata had some mixed feedback!" Teachers then set the children a challenge to turn the whole school into a museum, with every pupil invited to create their own exhibit at home to share something they had learnt. They created a range of exhibits from models of the Colosseum and the Minotaur's labyrinth to decorated pots, a siege engine and Medusa's head. Head teacher Pippa Osborne said: "We have been so

impressed by the creativity and effort that the children put into their home learning projects, which included diagrams, illustrations, models, games, costumes, quizzes, interactive presentations, food tasting and much more. "The children have relished the opportunity to research an aspect of ancient history that interests them and they really enjoyed presenting what they had discovered to children and staff from across the school. "It has been lovely to see the children's confidence and

n STYLE ADVICE

Spruce up your spring wardrobe LONGER daylight hours and blue skies can only mean one thing – it’s time to pack away the big coats and heavy jumpers and get your spring wardrobe ready. Of course, we’re not out of the woods just yet, weatherwise. Navigating spring’s changing weather can be a bit of a challenge, but with versatile pieces that can be layered up or down, you’ll find it much easier. If the first hint of spring has you excited about planning your outfits, then think about building a wardrobe with stylish spring essentials. A capsule collection will provide you with fail-safe pieces you can mix and match now and wear year after year. Simply add a few trend-led pieces to update your look annually. Here’s a list of key pieces to guide you:

Trench coat – The hardest working coat in springtime. Versatile and oh-so chic. Choose beige options and showerproof designs to maximise use. Spring knits – Lightweight, short-sleeve jumpers and cardigans in colours that suit your skin tone can be worn for work or leisure. The classic neckline is round, but V-necks are great for elongating your body. Tailored trousers – A smart pair of trousers guarantees a more polished look. Slouchy styles in black, grey and neutrals are this year’s favourite look. Smart blazer – Throw on to elevate any outfit. Lightweight jacket – Choose a ‘goes-with-anything’ khaki shacket or Western-style denim jacket for a pulled-together casual look.

Floral blouse – Pretty florals add a breath of fresh air to your wardrobe this time of year and brighten any outfit. Jeans – A good pair of jeans will last for years. Styles for 2022 include wide leg. White T-shirt – Choose the highest quality you can afford. A classic short-sleeve tee can be worn with trousers, jeans, skirts and any of the coats and jackets mentioned. Day dress – A midi-version (just below the knee) can be super versatile and stop legs from getting cold. Add statement jewellery for a day-to-evening look. Flat shoes – White trainers go with almost anything. While loafers and ballet pumps are this year’s must-wear and make classic additions to your wardrobe.

Gail Painter's fashion tips Accessories – Swap black accessories for tan to lighten the look and wear sunglasses for a touch of glamour. Not sure what to wear or how to wear it? Email your fashion and style questions to info@ notgivinin.com and look out for the answers in future issues of the Voice. www.notgivinin.com

n DOWNEND IN BLOOM

A new look for the community garden WHEN the Downend and Bromley Heath in Bloom Group was set up some nine years ago, one of the projects was to improve the appearance of the open space area outside the public toilet facilities on Westerleigh Road, near the High Street. The area was cleared of weeds and debris, conifers were planted, chippings laid and, a few years ago, six large planters on legs were installed by the In Bloom group, with the cost of these and the initial plants sponsored by First Bus Bristol. Unfortunately, in the latter months of last year the area suffered from vandalism, with some planters being tipped over. Also the chippings were getting quite dirty, mainly as a result of dripping sap from the large sycamore tree in the garden. Over the last two months we have taken steps to address the damage to the planters and the dirty chippings.

with the blue planters. Hopefully, the new shrubs and plants will take hold over the next couple of months and the area will continue to provide an attractive entrance to the public toilets. Malcolm and Cathryn Pick The new-look planters and chippings Firstly, fresh chippings were laid down, which have certainly brightened up the area. In Bloom then decided it would be best to lower the planters to ground level. This was quite an interesting challenge, undertaken by ‘The Crew’ (the woodworkers who are members of our group). Using a heavy-duty vehicle jack to raise the planters and place temporary supports, the legs were then shortened in situ using a chainsaw.

Over a morning in late February, all the planters were lowered to ground level and repainted with the Barleywood blue colour which the group has been using with the many wooden planters in the Downend and Bromley Heath area. Some new shrubs and flowers have been planted, using a grant provided by the parish council. Daffodils which were introduced to the planters a couple of years ago have done very well this year and have provided a nice contrast

Bunting for Her Majesty TO celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June, In Bloom are planning to decorate Downend in celebration. We are hoping that members of the community can help us with making red, white and blue pennants, which will be used to make community bunting. Anyone who is interested in making any can text Jackie on 07504 244361 for more details. Details will also be available on the In Bloom Facebook page.

WILL & PROBATE ADVICE

FREE REVIEW to fix the gap in your legal protection You may be surprised that the law doesn’t work in the way you’d expect. Having NO Will or NO Powers of Attorney can cause huge problems for those you love. If you became seriously ill or suffered a serious injury, or perhaps a routine operation went wrong and you lost mental capacity, then NO Powers of Attorney can mean: ● No access to your savings – as they’ll often be frozen - even if needed for your urgent treatment, to pay to support your children, or just to pay your bills. ● You’re unable to move home to more suitable accommodation. This can leave you in hospital or living away from your family, as no one else can sign for you on your property transfer documents.

● No one authorised to speak up for you to insist that you get the medical treatment or care you’d want. Melissa Witter, at Simpson Solicitors says: “You may be surprised that this applies even if you are married or have a close family. So, unless the people you trust are appointed by you IN ADVANCE they can face huge upset and often expense as you’ve left them powerless to help you”. The law can also have very cruel consequences if you died unexpectedly with no Will. In the worst cases it can mean: ● No inheritance for your children. ● No inheritance for your partner, if you are not married.

n STAPLE HILL COMMUNITY HUB

Our lunch club serves up so many smiles

I SHOULDN'T have favourites among the various services that the hub delivers, but I must admit to something of a soft spot for the lunch club. It is a terrific combination of a warm welcome, lovely home-cooked food and unbeatable value. What’s not to like? We are very lucky to have Rachel as the lunch club manager. She makes sure that everyone feels very welcome and well looked after. The food is warm and welcoming, too usually something fairly traditional like cottage pie or sausages and mash, followed by maybe fruit pie and custard or a chocolate brownie. There’s no choice, everyone has the same meal, but in practice Rachel and her team are usually able to make amendments to cater for individual likes and dislikes. And the price is a real bargain: just £2 for the main course and £1 for the dessert. Tea or coffee for 50p. That has to be unbeatable value! To my mind, though, the really outstanding element is the friendly atmosphere and a chance to relax and have a chat. If you know anyone who might like to come along to the lunch club, then please ask them to phone 01454 868374 and we can book them in. The lunches are served on Mondays and Fridays at midday. how employment works, probably through your own experience over the years, and some common sense are all that is required. If you might be able to help for a couple of hours, once or twice a month, then please do get in touch on 01454 868374. There are jobs out there, so now is a good time to be helping people find them. April, 2022

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Warm words won’t fix the cost-of-living crisis EVERY month it seems to be getting worse. Gas and electric bills are up and for everyone who uses heating oil, that’s off the scale too. It’s rocketed 116 per cent. I expect you, like me, are looking at your smart meter thinking it didn’t used to be like that a few months ago – and as for petrol… Every month we also hear the Chancellor commenting. He is normally saying how he understands that life is tough for working families and pensioners. Really? Because as March turns to April and the cost of living crisis bites, and everything from the price of a stamp goes up, the Government has chosen this moment to deliberately introduce a series of measures that will make this crisis much, much worse. They say April is the cruellest month, and this spring the Chancellor will again force up taxes, painfully whacking up National Insurance contributions. He’s chosen a tax on workers’ income, not any of the other options

like buying and selling property portfolios or stocks and shares. Yet it’s not all doom and gloom on the economic front. There are plenty of great job vacancies in the region – many with good pay and prospects. One project I was excited to launch recently was aimed at West of England jobseekers in our burgeoning hospitality sector. Jobs Connect was commissioned by the West of England Combined Authority that I lead, and built by Bath-based software company Cognisess. It will connect local people to jobs with top hospitality and tourism employers in the region. Jobs Connect is a bit like a dating agency for jobs. Job seekers and businesses upload their profiles and the website plays matchmaker. Individuals can do personality tests to figure out their compatibility, and there are top tips to make sure you put your best side forward and stand out from the

writes for the Voice crowd. In the forthcoming months I hope to expand this scheme as well as launch more skills support and set up a good employers’ charter. We can’t change Government policy – well not until the next General Election – nor can we change food prices locally. But we can make sure more people can get better paid jobs and opportunities. Warm words won’t solve the cost-of-living crisis, but it’s vital we make sure people in our region have the skills and opportunities to weather this storm.

Bringing history to life in the classroom

INSPIRING sessions in the classroom are showing children what life in the Downend and Emersons Green area used to be like. Historic England’s local heritage education manager Michael Gorely has been discussing what the area used to be like with teachers at Bromley Heath, Stanbridge, Blackhorse and Mangotsfield primary schools. Michael has used the history map produced by local voluntary group Community History and Art Project (CHAP) in the sessions, to discuss the people, places and activities that went on around us in the past and have created the area we live in today. He said: "People have enjoyed finding out about Downend’s links with the First and Second World War as well as learning about some of the significant people from Downend’s story, such as WG Grace, Carmen Beckford and the Cave family. "Knowing more about the heritage of our area enables people to make more of a connection and sense of belonging with a place, which is important for everyone in the community – as a child once said to me, 'if you don’t know about a place, you don’t really live there'."

Historic England helps people care for, enjoy and celebrate England’s historic environment, the places that define who we are and where we've come from as a nation. It works with communities and specialists to share knowledge and skills to inspire interest in history, care and conservation. Michael said: "My role is to bring history alive in schools, and we’re working with CHAP to put on an event based on some of the characters shown in the map in the next few months." CHAP, a not-for-profit voluntary organisation set up in 2018 to produce a local history resource and encourage the community to take part in all its activities, is providing updates on its work to readers of the Downend Voice and Emersons Green Voice and distributed copies of the map to voice readers last year. The map can also be viewed and downloaded from the CHAP website at www. downendchap.org/historical-map. The website also contains more information about CHAP's work. To contact CHAP email downendchap@ gmail.com. For more information on Historic England visit the website www.historicengland.org.

Cakes and coffee raise cash for Ukraine appeals TWO young friends from Mangotsfield were so moved by the plight of people fleeing their homes in Ukraine that they decided to raise money to help. Aria Katkar, aged eight, and nine-year-old Ava Jordan baked and sold cupcakes, cookies and brownies at a stall they set up at The Laurels, off Blackhorse Road, on March 13, helped by Aria's younger sister Kaira. Their families bought some samosas to add to the stall, and friends and neighbours flocked to buy the treats, raising £149 for charity Unicef to help people in Ukraine suffering because of the Russian invasion. The girls are pupils at Mangotsfield Primary School. Aria and Kaira's dad Dheeraj said: "The kids are listening everywhere about helping the Ukrainian people, who are currently devastated due to war, so they came up with a plan to raise money. "They were so excited when the day came and took turns serving people coming to donate. "Everyone was very generous – we would like to say thanks to all of them." A fundraising event by Staple Hill Salvation Army raised more than £2,250 to support colleagues in Eastern Europe helping

Aria and Kaira Katkar with Ava Jordan at their stall at The Laurels, Mangotsfield. Ukrainian refugees. The Salvation Army band played and collected donations outside the church building on Broad Street for more than an hour, while many people went inside for coffee and cake. Salvation Army joint minister Colin

Hylton-Jones said: "The people of Staple Hill, as always, are incredibly generous and we are pleased that we were able to do something tangible to support the relief work provided by the Salvation Army in Ukraine, Moldova and Poland at this time."

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Being part of the community I WONDER whether you have a routine or regular things that you do. Maybe you go shopping at the same time each week, go sit on a bench in the square and watch the world go by, maybe you go to the same coffee shop/pub or walk round Page Park as part of your daily or weekly routine. Maybe you see the same faces in the town, in the shops or in the park. We arrived in Staple Hill in 2014, when we were appointed to Staple Hill, Salvation Army, and have enjoyed being part of the regular rhythm of community life. Not just the day-to-day rhythm, but those community events that bring us together such as the Remembrance Day Parade, Christmas on the Hill, Carol Services, Page Park events, that make and shape our community, especially at times of difficulty where the kindness and heart of the community is expressed so lovingly to others in need. One of the rhythms of our ministry, like all churches, it to

support those families who have lost loved ones. On average we support a family and officiate at a funeral every 6½ weeks and recently we conducted a service of celebration for those families who lost loved ones during the pandemic and were not able, due to restrictions, to say goodbye surrounded by family and friends. In preparation I looked through 25 ‘Order of Services’ and collated all the music, readings and songs that had been used. In doing so, it was interesting to note some of the music that had been chosen, especially the music to exit the chapel. Many families wanted something less mournful and more celebratory of the joy and privilege of knowing a loved one. Here are some on the titles: Bring me Sunshine … Dance the Night Away … In the Mood … Moon River … New York, New York … Que Sera Sera … Somewhere Over the Rainbow … Stand by Me … Wind beneath my Wings … Wonderful World … You’re my World.

Good Friday is a time when we remember the death of Jesus, a time when the disciples thought their world with all their hopes had collapsed. But Easter Sunday brings with it hope in Jesus’ resurrection. Christians today continue to hold on to the hope that the resurrection brings. The hope that one day, we will live with Jesus in heaven, a place where there will me no more suffering, death or hardship – a bright tomorrow. Whether this is your belief or not, perhaps you would hold with words from ‘Bring me Sunshine’: Bring me sunshine In your smile Bring me laughter All the while In this world where we live There should be more happiness So much joy you can give To each brand new bright tomorrow Bring me fun Bring me sunshine Bring me Love

n AROUND THE WIs

The Mangotsfield WI Platinum Jubilee celebration

MANGOTSFIELD WI

FOR our February meeting we held our Queen’s 70th Platinum Anniversary of ascending to the throne. She had gone to Kenya on a royal tour, aged just 25, and was enjoying a treehouse-style lodge in a remote part of Kenya with her husband Prince Philip when the news broke of her father’s death and she became the new sovereign - flying to Kenya a princess and returning as Queen. We decked our hall with bunting and decorated the tables, set out street party style, with crowns, flags and red, white and blue tablecloths. All members raided their wardrobe to find purple, red, white and blue attire - plus, of course, some amazing hats! We had a wonderful evening, with boxed ‘afternoon teas’ and a lovely lady singer who sang songs from each decade of our Queen’s reign. We toasted her majesty with elderflower pressé and at the end of the evening sang ‘God Save the Queen’. It was a lovely evening, which I’m sure all our members enjoyed and will remain in their memory for a long time. Our March meeting, on the 28th, is a craft evening, decorating the afternoon tea boxes. April will feature Andrew Stocker, on the Theatre Royal (Bristol Old Vic). For more information you can take a look at our Facebook page or go to our website, www. mangotsfieldwi.org.uk. If you are not a member but would like to join us, please let me know by emailing president@ mangotsfieldwi.org.uk. Carol Coombs

STAPLE HILL WI

I AM so excited for the next couple of months at WI.

We have built a programme on such important issues, empowering and inspiring women. From the Queen and her Jubilee to our ladies' walking group – we have you covered. This really is a great time to join us. Our speaker on April 19 is Helen Gray – her talk is called ‘Herbal first aid from your garden’. Helen is a practising medicinal herbalist who is professionally trained. This will be very interesting, knowing that we may have remedies in our garden, planter or window box we don’t know about yet. The WI has been instrumental throughout the years with looking after the planet, being more sustainable and we love to make stuff from scratch – this will be a great talk to attend for members and new ladies. The walking group are gearing up to start back up from April: full details will be shared in the next meeting. Dust off the winter cobwebs and get out in the fresh air as a group. I am sure there will be a refreshment break! If you are a knitter, or fancy your hand or hands at knitting, there is a jubilee ‘Where’s WInnie’ project. You can join a special knitalong session on April 23 if this interests you. As a member of the local community, you may find a WInnie while you go about your day-today business. Becky Barnes from Becky Barnes Style will be coming to speak on May 17. She makes her living from giving ladies confidence in their clothes, inspiring us to build a wearable and sustainable wardrobe. Not only is she a joy to listen to, you will come away inspired and informed. Becky is everything sustainable

and empowering. Are you reading this and thinking you would like to meet new people? You may not be able to commit lots of time – that’s OK, we meet once a month. As a member you can participate in as much or as little as you like. We have a diverse membership and anyone is welcome. We have ample parking for ladies who need to drive to us and we meet on the third Tuesday of most months. Join us in Christ Church Hall on North Street in Downend. Come and make new friends, learn new skills, enjoy a cuppa and some cake! You can drop us an email to find out more at katetarr@avonfwi. org.uk. Kate Tarr

BROMLEY HEATH WI

ON arrival at our March meeting I was greeted and signed in by our friendly committee ladies, who presented me with a receipt for my online subs payment and my copy of this year’s WI Members Discount booklet. After handing over my foodbank donation, I wandered over to get a cup of tea and a slice of Mel’s delicious lemon drizzle cake – in my view worth breaking any diet for! Laid out nearby were a selection of leaflets providing details of various activities including the much-anticipated 'resurrection' of some sub-groups that had been suspended thanks to Covid-19, plus a leaflet detailing a range of events organised by Avon Federation. With Easter fast approaching, Liza and the committee felt it was an ideal opportunity for us all to hand craft an Easter wreath. Our crafting evenings are always enjoyable, as we get to chat with friends, meet new members and

leave with something that we have made. On spotting some familiar faces, I went over to join the group and the conversation just before things got going. After welcoming us all and bringing us up-to-date with things WI-wise at both branch and Avon regional level, Liza was happy to take a seat and leave us in the capable hands of our own Mary B, one of our multi-talented crafting ladies. Already laid out on our tables were what, at first glance, had looked like the world’s largest Polo mints but on closer inspection were actually white polystyrene rings. Using these as a base, along with a vast array of different colour wools and Easter decorations, we could design and create a small wreath to help celebrate Easter. Towards the end of the session, Mary asked us to bring our finished wreaths up to the entrance table so that they could be seen and (most of them) admired by all. I confess that I was still working on mine, but when I went over to have a peek they were all lovely. Several were absolutely glorious, and wouldn’t look out of place in the window of a specialist craft ware shop. Each year all NFWI members have the opportunity to propose and later vote for a relevant topic on which the WI will campaign. Following the recent national vote, it has just been announced that the following resolution has received the most support: "Women and Girls with ASD & ADHD - under-identified, underdiagnosed, misdiagnosed, undersupported." Our April meeting is due to take place on Thursday 7th, when we will be joined by a local cheesemonger. This will be an excellent opportunity to see who knows their Camembert from their Cheddar, Wensleydale and Caerphilly – and I almost resisted the opportunity to say: "If you can’t make it then I’m afraid it’s hard cheese!" Please email us at bromleyheathwi@gmail.com if you would like to try us out online, free of charge, or just require some further information about the benefits of becoming a WI member. Have a very Happy Easter. Margaret Hanwell

April, 2022 Gail talked about her work as a professionally-qualified personal stylist, and shared tips on how to organise your clothes and wardrobe. This included advice that if you buy something but after a fortnight you still haven’t worn it, to take it back, as you probably won’t wear it! Members completed a quiz to establish their own style personality, looked at illustrations of different looks for that particular style and discussed where specific clothes could be bought. This was a really interesting and very informative evening, enjoyed by all. Our March meeting is due to be a talk and demonstration of belly dancing. This is an excellent form of exercise, as it’s very low impact but very beneficial for flexibility and strengthening of the abdominal muscles. Members will have to have the opportunity for a shimmy, too! We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Badminton Road Methodist Church Hall at 7.30pm, and have a varied programme of events for the coming year.

If you would like to find out more please contact our president, Julie, at Downendwi@yahoo.co.uk. Deb (on behalf of the committee)

BEECHMERE BELLES WI THE nights are drawing out, buds are appearing on the trees, sunny flowers are poking their heads out and us humans are ready to emerge from lockdown and winter hibernation. What better time could there be to try something new? At Beechmere Belles WI we are always trying or learning something new, along with making new friends over a cuppa and cake. What is a WI without cake? Earlier in the year we arranged a Brush Party for our members, which was also open to friends and family. These Brush Parties are nearly always held in a pub, and we had arranged ours in one of the local pubs close to where we hold our meetings. Night out with the girls, tick, in a pub with liquid refreshments, tick, plenty of fun and giggles, tick.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps

If you have never been to one of these events, we can highly recommend it – you will be spending a few hours creating a painting you can be proud of. The initial reaction is ‘I can’t paint’. Well, you most certainly can – the lovely lady that leads the class takes you through step by step and you really do create a piece that looks amazing. We have started up our cinema club again now that we are very nearly back to normal after the pandemic: this is a brilliant extra event to our monthly meetings. Our committee is also looking at the theatre programmes closely, as it’s been such a long time since we have been able to arrange events with confidence. We have a great programme this year, but the one we are all looking forward to is in May. A Right Royal Do is planned to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It will be an all-round feel good evening, with us all toasting the Queen. The Queen is the president of the Sandringham WI and I always wonder which month she chooses to be on the cake rota! Last month we were joined by Gandhi Andy, as he has become

47 known, from East Bristol Auctions to tell us more about what their job entails and the marvellous stories of the celebrity auctions they have run. Since selling a pair of Gandhi’s glasses for a huge sum of money, he seems to be a magnet for all things Gandhi. Hearing about the items they auctioned from the estate of Dave Prowse, Darth Vader to most of us, and the fun they had auctioning one of Del Boy’s threewheeler vans, made for a great night of laughter. Andy brought along items for us to guess which was the most valuable, and I will never dismiss Mr Potato Head again. Beechmere Belles have welcomed some lovely new ladies over the last few months and it is always great to have new visitors. We meet every fourth Thursday of the month at Emersons Green Village Hall at 7.30pm. Your first visit is free, so why not pop in and see what the WI is all about? We don’t make jam and we don’t sing Jerusalem, but if you feel like bringing along a pot and bursting into song, that’s absolutely fine by us. Beechmere Belles Emersons Green & Lyde Green WI

n MUD PIE EXPLORERS

Woodland playgroup encounter IF you come to Lincombe Barn Woods in the heart of Downend on a Tuesday morning, you might encounter our Woodland playgroup! Be prepared to see Gruffalo footsteps as we follow a story trail; or hear dinosaurs roaring as we find dinosaur bones and make fossils out of clay; or smell our woodland potions and perfumes made from collected materials (some floral, some garlicky!); or hear the snap and crackle of a fire with a kettle whistling – hot chocolate time! At Mud Pie Explorers playgroup children aged from 18 months to 4 years come with a parent, grandparent or carer for 2 hours of naturebased fun. All our play is child-led so the session can take us anywhere! Everything is flexible and free flow, so you don’t need to worry if your child doesn’t want to sit and listen or follow the activity everyone else is doing – everyone and all their ideas, wants and needs are welcome. Children with additional needs or disabilities will fit right in. As spring is on its way we’re planning some planting, some foraging and cooking (nettle crisps and wild garlic bread are not to be missed), and a chance to learn about the nests and baby birds that will be appearing in the woods soon. With the weather getting warmer the children will be welcome to splash in the stream and catch freshwater shrimp which will be reappearing soon! Spaces are currently available for our Tuesday morning playgroup, 9.30-11.30. For more details or to book visit the Mud Pie Explorers website at www.mud-pies.co.uk.

n PAGE PARK NEWS Jubilee celebrations shape up PAGE Park's celebrations of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee are taking shape. A funfair, music and sporting activities have all been booked for the event, which will take place on Saturday June 4, from 11am to 5pm. The Friends of Page Park will hold a Jubilee fancy dress competition, with separate categories for children aged up to five years old, those aged between six and 12, and over 13s. Judging will take place during the afternoon of the event, at a time to be confirmed. Music at the bandstand will start at 11am on the dot with the Kris Knox band, followed by a variety of other performers playing everything from sea shanties and folk to blues and disco. The Sensory Garden will be a relaxation area, with piano music and cream teas, while craft sessions will be held in the Nest, next to the Bean Tree cafe. Among the clubs providing activities will be Cleve Rugby Club, the YOU Foundation and the Downend Flyers football team. Stalls are set to range from crafts, plants, food, charity and voluntary groups to a face painter and the Friends' own silly games stall. The funfair from Albert Rogers will include a variety of rides, bouncy castles and a new activity centre. The Friends are still looking for more stall holders to come and set up a pitch. For more information email friendsofpageparkbs16@gmail.com. Friends vice-chair Steph Purser, who is organising the celebrations, said: "The event is free and we hope our visitors will stay and enjoy what is on offer throughout the day. "We only have two requests – a dry sunny day and for visitors to walk to the event, as parking will be difficult near the park." There will be collection buckets for donations to improve the park. During the day the Page family, descendants of the park’s original benefactor Alderman Arthur William Page and active supporters of the Friends, will plant a tree in remembrance of John and Beryl Page, Arthur's grandson and his wife. John died in 2012 and Beryl, who lived near Bristol, continued to attend events including the opening of the bandstand and the reopening of the revamped Page Association centre, before she died last year.

Electric ice cream THE ice cream van which provides refreshment for Page Park visitors on sunny days now has an electric supply. The supply was fitted by South Gloucestershire council and the van's operator has converted it at his own expense so that it can be run using the supply – rather than its engine – while it is parked up to do business.

Hedgerow planted NEW native hedgerow trees have been planted along the South View side of Page Park to improve diversity, provide food and shelter for wildlife, and replace the non-native laurel bushes. The trees were planted in March and more will be planted later in the year.

Team needs members BRISTOL Aces Cricket Club, which is based in the park, is looking for new members to join for this year's cricket season. For more details email chairman@bristolacescc.co.uk or call 07947 580 689.

n MESSAGE FROM SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL

Working to improve our communities for the better I AM delighted that the council is continuing its long-standing partnership with the Voice magazines with a regular column, helping to bring the latest news to you on how we are working to improve our communities for the better. As we continue to progress out of the pandemic we return our focus solely towards our day-to-day activities, delivering on our key priorities of raising school standards, improving our local roads and public spaces and delivering you value for money – all whilst continuing to provide local leadership in our efforts to tackle the climate emergency.

Recently, the council has unveiled its plans for highways maintenance over the coming year, with many roads, paths and cycleways in communities near you set to be improved. This is part of our ongoing commitment to helping keep South Gloucestershire moving and is continuing our record £174 million investment into local highways since 2019. Later this summer, South Gloucestershire will also join communities across the country in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a major milestone in Her Majesty’s historic 70-year reign, and I am proud the council is helping to mark

Join us in Providing a Great Education to Every Child

the occasion with £50,000 in grants towards local celebrations in the district, such as street parties, festivals and other events. Finally, while this column will predominantly be for things going on in our community, the attention of many local people will undoubtedly be on the terrible events unfolding in the Ukraine. With millions of people fleeing the country, and many likely to find their way to the UK, the council is ready to step up and help, as we have done so for refugee families forced from their homes due to conflicts in the likes of Syria and Afghanistan.

Toby Savage, Leader of South Gloucestershire Council With the Government having now unveiled its plans for the Homes for Ukraine scheme, we stand ready to play our part and I am proud to know our residents will be ready to hold out the hand of friendship to any we help to resettle.

n PHOTOGRAPHY WITH LINCOMBE BARN CAMERA CLUB

Looping the Loop by Jeff McKinstry

Keep on moving WITH life slowly returning to normal, ‘movement’ was an appropriate, if fortuitous, choice of subject for our first proper competition of 2022. Lots of choice there, as the dictionary offers: an act of moving; a change or development; a group of people working together to advance their shared political,

Downhill Racers by Roy Shergold

social, or artistic ideas; a principal division of a longer musical work, self-sufficient in terms of key, tempo, and structure; an act of defecation. Fortunately, we all settled on the first definition, one that our judge favoured. But catching movement in photography still gives many choices, most importantly things like blurring, whether of the subject or the background. As it happens, some of the most successful images were also of people enjoying themselves First prize was a popular choice, going to our chair, Roy Shergold,

with 'Downhill Racer'. Just a blur from the background snow, while the two little boys’ faces remain clear in their delight. Jeff McKinstry’s 'Looping the Loop' finds its speed in the trail of water left behind the looping rider as he is halfway through his loop, to the amazement, no doubt, of people on the boat behind. No trickery, just a very quick speed of reaction to catch precisely that moment. Rachel Domleo’s Skateboarding is all blur, as a composite of several images creates a dizzying sense of movement. Even the judge said he didn’t know how she achieved that.

The new year, and the opening up of meetings, has brought several new members. Why not join us too? New members and guests are always welcome to our club (£3 if you just want to try us out). If you’re looking for company and new acquaintances, we always welcome new members. If you’re interested and would like to be part of our future, take a look at our website at www. lincombebarncameraclub.co.uk or email lincombe.barn@gmail.com. n DOWNEND MEN IN SHEDS

Giving children hands-on experience of growing food DOWNEND MEN in SHEDS

Raised beds made by Dopwnend Men in Sheds OUR battery-operated drill drivers are without doubt the most versatile and used tools in our workshop. Recently one of our members had a lucky encounter with his neighbour, who was houseclearing and about to dispose of three battery-operated Makita drills to the tip; all the batteries were flat and the charger was missing. The drills themselves looked in good condition and, after buying a second hand charger on the internet, all the drills worked

perfectly and two of the four batteries held their charge. After investing in two replacement batteries, now all three drills are in regular use and sharing the workload each week. We would like to express our thanks for the donation of these tools. In February we were contacted by Jane Francis, the Early Years East Bristol lead teacher and the East & Central Bristol Childminder Hub lead. Jane and Luci Gorell Barnes have been developing a nature discovery project at Oldbury Court

Children's Centre childminder group, which is funded by Bristol Early Years and Child Care. Over the past four years a team of Oldbury Court childminders have worked to establish a thriving nature discovery and growing area at the school. Over the same period, similar projects have been initiated at four more childminder groups across East and Central Bristol. As the project title suggests, the aim is to give young children an opportunity to explore nature through sensory play, leading to an

understanding of the seasons and the importance of growing food. Children are introduced to growing fruit and vegetables, harvesting, collecting and drying seeds for the next season. This hands-on experience helps the children understand the cycle of growing food and take part in activities such as picking and chopping vegetables and, in the case of strawberries, eating them. These activities enable children to gain lifelong skills which will make a real difference. The initial involvement for DMIS has been to make a batch of ten low-level raised beds. By the time you read this, they will be finished and in the process of being distributed between the various childminder groups. Our members have worked hard to ensure all the beds are in place, in readiness for use during the forthcoming growing season, with rhubarb, garlic, onions, strawberries, Swiss chard, peas and herbs already planted in some of them. Due to the success of the raised bed project DMIS have now been asked to make a batch of eight extended leg planters. These should also be ready in time for the spring planting season. We hope to be able to provide ongoing support as the project develops across local childminder groups, and will follow its progress with interest.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

A new approach to tackling drug dealing I AM delighted to tell you about a significant new approach that sees Avon and Somerset Police team up with partners across the South West to combine their operational powers in tackling cross-border drugs supply activities, known as Operation Scorpion. Coinciding with National County Lines Intensification Week, the aim of this activity was to send a strong message to criminals that the South West is #NoPlaceForDrugs. The five regional police services – Avon and Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire – alongside their respective PCCs, the British Transport Police, South West Regional Organised Crime Unit and Crimestoppers, set aside regional boundaries just as criminals engaging in drugs activity do, to harness

their collective power and disrupt the South West drugs market, dismantling drugs supply networks and arresting those who profit from them. The forces used a range of tactics, including enhanced surveillance of the road and transport networks, increased high-visibility patrols in areas of high demand, carrying out warrants at addresses used for drug dealing and welfare checks on vulnerable people. As a result, a number of successful results were achieved in our force area, including 64 arrests and 17 warrants executed. Five known county lines were disrupted and at least 41 weapon sweeps took place, along with 178 visits to vulnerable people’s addresses. The results from this collective action speak for themselves and highlights what can be achieved

when a borderless approach to drugs enforcement is taken. By coming together collectively in this way, we can send a strong message to criminals and those who exploit young and vulnerable people in Avon and Somerset that the South West is no place for drugs. In other news, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Claire Hiscott as my Deputy PCC to support me and my office in ensuring Avon and Somerset Police is an effective, efficient and legitimate police service. Claire was a councillor for eight years in the Horfield Ward area, a cabinet member for education and skills, and an area chairman for Bristol and Gloucestershire Conservatives. Grant to help common Life aboard the A VOLUNTEER group helping to conserve an important open space has received a £50,000 grant to support its work. The Friends of Siston Common has been given the money, with 10% 'match funding' from south Gloucestershire Council, by the Enovert Community Trust, which distributes money collected from landfill waste taxes. It will pay for work to create a wildflower meadow, a new avenue of trees and a new community orchard of "heritage variety fruit trees", along with two new ponds, a new footpath and new benches for visitors to use on Siston Park Common, between Kingswood, Warmley and Mangotsfield. FOSC chair James Hackett said: “The Friends of Siston Commons are thrilled to receive this generous funding from Enovert and South Gloucestershire Council and we are looking forward to involving local residents of all ages in helping us to carry out the exciting plans for Siston Park Common which will improve the area for humans as well as wildlife, giving us all hope for the future. South Gloucestershire Council has provided the 10% match funding needed to secure the grant. Enovert Community Trust manager Angela Haymonds said: “Funding projects that contribute towards increasing biodiversity is a priority for the Trustees of ECT and we are delighted to be able to support this important project. ECT’s award of £50k will hopefully open up other funding opportunities to enable significant environmental improvements to be made over the next few years on this site.” Siston Parish Council chair Andrew Stacey said: “We are delighted that FOSC have been able to secure the funding to progress this wonderful project.”

SS Great Britain

WITH Easter holidays just around the corner, we're looking forward to the fragrance of freshly cut grass and sprouting flowers as spring gets into full swing. However, life aboard the SS Great Britain did not smell quite as sweet. In fact, some of the odours of a nineteenth century passenger ship would be enough to send you overboard. Brunel's SS Great Britain, the 'world's smelliest museum', already includes hundreds of sights, sounds and smells. However, this Easter, they're inviting visitors to rate the smells and help them choose new ones! Some of the new smells under consideration include the rich scents of dark chocolate and brandy, the homely aroma of roast beef, and the pong of boiled cabbage. Be sure to follow Brunel's SS Great Britain on social media for a look behind-the-scenes as they prepare for the holidays and book your tickets on their website to join in the fun. ssgreatbritain.org/easter

Fluffy Kingfisher by Ben Newby

Our feathered friends PERHAPS it was all that walking we were forced into as lockdown exercise during the covid pandemic that has prompted greater interest in the natural world around us. In terms of the wildlife available to photograph locally, birds offer the best opportunities as well as the widest variety and, judging by the number of bird pictures submitted in our club competitions, many keen photographers are equally keen birders. There are a lot of great avian images out there, so it is a challenge to shoot something exceptional, but three examples that manage that are shown here. ‘Up and Away’ shows a bird of prey on take-off, different in that this bird is usually shown either perched or in flight. Here the

April, 2022

Sploosh by Dave Britton dramatic moment of taking off is captured, as it launches into the air, the light coming from behind and the side and the background pleasingly mottled and unfocused. Movement is even more pronounced in ‘Sploosh’, with drama created by the splashing water. The composition is helped by the arc of spray over the head of the bird and the backward sweep of the wings. A fast shutter speed has frozen the action and captured the moment. By contrast, ‘Fluffy Kingfisher’ is a static shot, but its quality makes an exceptional image. Soft lighting has brought out the bright colours of the bird, emphasised by the contrasting muted brown of the branch and the plain background. This bird flies fast, passing by in a blue flash, so photographing it sitting on a branch can be a lot easier than trying to capture it on the wing – but only if you can find it! Spring flowers are a sight to lift the spirits

Cactus plants on display

A colourful cactus evening OUR last meeting was a talk on growing cactus and their history – our speaker brought plants with him to make it a colourful evening. The members' seeds are coming up all ready for the new season. The next two talks are about growing vegetables, from a very good nurseryman. Find out how you can grow vegetables in your garden or on a kitchen windowsill. Our next meeting is on April 14 at 7.30pm in the Assembly Rooms, Salisbury Road, Downend. For more information call 0117 957 1703. Roger Davis

WHAT a lovely time of year we are moving into. It is a pleasure at the moment to go for a walk on a dry day and peep into people's gardens and see all the spring flowers that are coming into bloom. The council have some good roundabouts with daffodils planted in: it is a sight to lift the spirits. The various volunteers who plant containers around our neighbourhoods cheer up the area where we live. So thank you to all of you – it makes a walk a pleasure and is good for our health. We now need to be thinking about what to add to our gardens for late spring and summer – bulbs, bedding plants and perhaps one or two herbaceous plants. Also think about whether to enter one of the local horticultural shows this year. If so, whether to enter vegetables, flowers or both. It is good fun and you are able to meet like-minded people and perhaps make a new friend or two. There are fun classes to enter in most shows, like the longest stick of rhubarb or longest bean, and perhaps the biggest onion and most unusual-shaped vegetable. The children are not left out either – many shows have classes for the children: a miniature

garden is a popular class and it is interesting to see how the children make little items to go in their garden. Another class for the children can be the tallest sunflower – something to think about when the weather isn't good. We are planning our summer trips at the moment: we are going to visit Yeo Valley Garden Farm for a morning trip. If you would like to join, us why not come along to our April meeting, on the 14th? We are having a plant swap and a cake stall, you can wear your Easter bonnet and generally have a fun time for Easter. In August we are visiting two gardens in Abergavenny on a day trip. Meanwhile we will be doing a general clear-up in our gardens - not being too tidy, to leave something for nature – sowing seeds and chitting our potatoes and, if we have space, planting a tree: size dependent on the space we have. Enjoy your gardens through April, and hopefully we may see you at our Easter meeting. Happy gardening! Mary Head, Secretary

n CHRISTINE'S COLUMN

Full of the joys of spring

'FULL of the joys of spring' - that was the headline of this paper in April 2015! Next to it was a lovely picture of some fluffy chicks. You may wonder how I remember that - well, I have that very newspaper still, from all those years ago, as it was the first time my column appeared in it! I subsequently cut out and kept my columns, and sometimes I keep other articles if something catches my eye, such as Melanie's Kitchen recipes, the Freewheelers' Andy Davies delivering essential supplies to hospitals and photographs from the two

camera clubs. As I look out of the patio door from my living room for signs of spring, there are a pair of magpies and wood pigeons hopping about in my small garden. The wood pigeons are building a nest and they are finding small bits of twig to build it in the nearby bamboo, which is partly in a corner of my garden but mostly in next door's garden. One year these birds built their nest rather precariously, right by the satellite television dish. Unfortunately some of my Tete-a-tete daffodils have been bitten, most likely by birds and

so too has the patch of primula Wandas. The clump of snowdrops have gone over, but they have been lovely. My various clematis are showing signs of life too. I have four potentillas, and their little leaves are beginning to appear. I glance out to the garden again and one of the pigeons is waddling down one of the garden paths, sometimes stopping to peck at this and that. When I moved out here, I bought a stone bird bath, which sits on a paving slab by the clothes line. The pigeon on its way down the garden stops to have a

Credit union bites back against loan sharks in the South West Throughout the pandemic, many people have become less financially resilient and in the wake of the increased rates of inflation and energy bill crisis, this trajectory is expected to continue. In a recent statement from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, they suggested the cost of living crisis will lead to increased loan sharks and illegitimate doorstep energy sellers. Those feeling the pinch may look for money away from trusted sources for a temporary solution. However, all money lenders need to be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA); if they are not and they aren’t someone you know, they could be a loan shark. In the UK alone, the last reported figure found that 310,000 people were in debt to illegitimate lenders according to the Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) and this may have risen in the face of economic hardship since the pandemic began.

A safe and trusted way to borrow

In light of the current economic situation, credit unions are stepping up to the plate by offering FCA recognised finance, in an ethical and low-cost way. Here in South West England, Great Western Credit Union (GWCU) currently has over 20,000 members and is a financially sympathetic community-based option, steering people away from the debt cycle. With their low-cost finance, the credit union actively helps people to save in comparison to high street banks, whilst providing a carefully calculated amount of lending so that repayments are genuinely affordable. GWCU has teamed up with IMLT to raise more awareness of schemes and their new dedicated loan shark page offers resources to learn more about how to identify high-cost lenders to stop this activity from arising further. The credit union is helping people to make informed choices about the lending options available to them and as a reward for establishing good money habits, new members will receive a savings boost of £25. n SPORT WHEN Clare Purkiss was diagnosed with kidney disease she thought she might never be able to swim again. But since a successful transplant not only has Clare returned to the pool, she has raised £1,400 with a distance event – and is now aiming to take part in the British Transplant Games. Clare, of Lyde Green, was diagnosed at the age of 21. She said: "It came out of the blue, as I had been perfectly healthy up to then. "I was told that within five years I would either need dialysis or a transplant." Clare had to wait until her condition had reached the stage where a transplant would have the greatest benefit, as medication to suppress the body's immune response limits the time a donated organ lasts to around 15 to 20 years. She received a kidney from her mother, who was found to be a match, in an operation at Southmead Hospital. This year Clare, a civil servant, will celebrate the fifth

Clare said: "When I was younger I was a massive swimmer, and when I was diagnosed I thought it would be something I wouldn't be able to do again. "Since the transplant I've been able to get back into the

pool and swim." To raise money and awareness for charity Kidney Research UK, Clare and her coach Ash Tuck, of Kinetic Sports, organised a swimathon relay at the David Lloyd Emersons Green sports club on March 12. They aimed to swim 2,640 lengths of the centre's outdoor 25m pool to represent the 66km distance of two English Channel crossings.

In the end Clare, Ash and a team of swimmers chalked up a total of 3,000 lengths, or 75km, with Clare swimming 120 and Ash doing 180. Clare is a member of the David Lloyd club and deputy manager Tom McEwen helped arrange the event, with many members taking part once they heard about the cause. Clare said: "We were incredibly lucky to have about 25 to 30 swimmers taking part, including some of the children who were there for their swimming lessons. "Some of our incredible swimmers put in some massive distances and we were able to complete the challenge in five and a half hours, having expected to be there all day." n SPORT A YOUNG cricketer had a coaching session with World Cup-winning England bowler Jofra Archer. Tour Ponting, from Carsons and Mangotsfield Cricket Club, even faced some balls from the fast bowler in the nets. Promising young player Tour was put forward following his performances for Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation teams for an ACE scholarship, to support children who come from a black and ethnic minority background in cricket. Tour was successful in his trial and awarded a scholarship for the coming season. The highlight was to spend a day at the cricket performance centre at Loughborough University. The day began by being introduced to well known explayers and commentators Ian Ward and Charlotte Edwards. But the highlight was when Archer, who played in all England's matches in the 2019 Cricket World Cup and bowled the super over which saw England win the closest-ever final against New Zealand, was introduced. The young players had a

Tour said: “Jofra was really helpful in talking to me about my run-up and how to grip the ball. "He also bowled to me. I tried to think of him as any other bowler. "I managed to hit him for 3 runs, played out a couple of dot balls before hitting him for 4! "It was a day I’ll never forget, and great to be given this opportunity.” Tour is part of the successful youth academy at Carsons and Mangotsfield CC, which has seen the club flourish over the last few seasons. Cricket club's lifesaver in the pavilion A CRICKET club has been given a new piece of equipment which could help save a life. The defibrillator has been installed by the changing room at Pucklechurch Cricket Club after being donated by housebuilder Redrow South West. The club, which has three adult teams, an All Stars team for five to eight year olds and a Dynamos team for children aged nine to 11, as well as a women's softball team, is based at the recreation ground off Abson Road. First XI captain Ryan Watts said: “As a captain you always feel responsible for your teams. "A defibrillator is an essential tool to save the life of someone in the event of them suffering a cardiac arrest. "It is very reassuring to be prepared should any such accident occur at the cricket club in the future." The defibrillator gives voice prompts and easy to understand visuals that guide the user through treating a patient who is suffering a cardiac arrest. It will also be available for the other clubs using the pavilion, including the village's men's women's and veterans' football teams, and Sunday side Puckle Vale FC. The equipment was supplied by Heartsafe AED Locator, who also provided training for club members.

Clive Setter of Heartsafe AED Locator with Charlotte Newnes of Redrow South West and Ryan Watts of Pucklechurch Cricket Club Clive Setter from the firm said: "This is one of the most highly-developed defibrillators on the market. “We are fortunate to have an incredible ambulance service in this country and calling 999 should always be the first call of action in any emergency. "However, without a defibrillator there is only about a three or four per cent chance of survival for someone with cardiac arrest. A defibrillator, good CPR and getting to the patient within seven or eight minutes, can increase the success rate by 50 to 70 per cent.”

Redrow, which is currently building homes at the Frenchay Gardens development, said it wanted to "contribute to a safe and healthy community". Area sales manager Charlotte Newnes said: “The training experience has been incredibly thought-provoking. It has shown me just how important it is that clubs and locations where people gather have access to a defibrillator. "We are thrilled to be able to provide this valuable, potentially life-saving resource to Pucklechurch Cricket Club."

Mangos back in bottom two after slip-up at Barnstaple A RECENT upturn in form for Mangotsfield United came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at basement club Barnstaple Town. A win for Cinderford Town then saw them leapfrog the Mangos, who slipped back into second-bottom spot in the Southern League Division One South. The defeat followed a superb point in a 3-3 draw at Melksham Town, followed by a dominant performance in a 3-1 home win over Lymington Town. Before the Melksham game the club learned that Phil Bater would be unable to return to take up his position as Mangotsfield's manager. The ex-Bristol Rovers player, who previously managed at Cossham Street from 20092012, is having to concentrate on family commitments, due to unforeseen circumstances. All at Mangotsfield wish him and his family well. In the meantime Glyn

Ashton, who managed the team last season before moving into a player and club development role, has taken over as interim manager, working alongside assistant and coach Matt Curry. Against Melksham, the Mangos trailed 2-0 after 32 minutes and, although Mircea Llea pulled one back, Melksham restored their two-goal advantage right on half-time, leaving the visitors with a seemingly uphill battle. However, the Mangos kept going and late goals by Joe Cattermole (81) and Kye Simpson (86) earned the visitors a battling point. The win over Lymington Town saw Kye Simpson net the first goal on 15 minutes, breaking through the Lymington defence after some poor defending. Simpson then had a penalty saved by Lymington keeper Nicholas Jones, but a second Mangos goal finally came on 75 minutes, thanks to an own goal.

Dylan Walker then pulled back a very late goal for Lymington but Cattermole still found time to add a third goal for the Mangos, sealing an excellent 3-1 win. The match proved to be the last for Mangotsfield for striker Simpson, who has joined rivals Bristol Manor Farm. Glyn Ashton has signed two former Mangos strikers – Dean Griffiths from Bitton and Jake Slocombe from Welton Rovers – to replace Simpson but they could not join in time to play in the 2-1 defeat at basement club Barnstaple Town, which kept the Devon club's survival hopes alive by keeping Mangotsfield within catching distance. Mangos keeper Marko Radovanovic kept the hosts at bay in the first half but was beaten by two penalties after the break – one on the rebound – with an injury-time header by Joe Beardwell too little, too late to save the game, which ended

Cleve chalk up five wins in a row Cleve 29-10 Barton Hill THIS was a chance for Cleve to climb up the league. They had won four games in a row and were beginning to play well. In the first minute Cleve showed their forwards' attacking potential by driving towards the

line, where Chris Bronkhurst went over. Harry Owens converted and Cleve were 7-0 up. Cleve started to show great attacking promise. A good lineout steal and then a penalty kick into touch allowed them to pressure Barts close to the line. A catch and drive put Jack O'Hara over to make it 12-0 to Cleve. Cleve’s scrum half was having a good day, with a number of snipping runs due to the platform the forwards were creating for him. The ball then inevitably travelled out to the wing, where Ubaka Onyekwelu scored in

the corner to make it 22-0. Barts now reacted and went on their own offensive. After 15 minutes of pressure their winger scored two unconverted tries, to cut the deficit to 22-10 at half-time. The second half saw Cleve again mount attacking forward drives near the line. A lineout close to Barts' line led to a good take and drive, with Louis Bartlett powering over. Harry Owens then converted for Cleve to come out 29-10 winners and make it five wins in a row. Stephen Bateman
