Twofold Bay & Killer Whale Museum, Eden © Paul Callaghan

Eden

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

2

century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay.- the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

Blue Whales on the Brink at the Eden Killer Whale Museum Blue Whales are the largest animals on our planet. They can weigh about the same as 40 elephants and are as long as around three school buses. Their heart alone is around the size of a small car. Due to their low numbers and the size of the ocean, mysteries remain of the nature of this swift and powerful creature. Blue Whales are considered Endangered, meaning there is a very high risk of their extinction in the wild. Prior to the invention of the exploding harpoon gun and steamdriven vessels, Blue Whale numbers in Antarctica were over 230,000. Their swiftness and power were too great for the oared whaleboats. Technological

changes in whaling tools and vessels soon changed this, and recent surveys estimate the population now around only 2,000 in Antarctica. Blue Whales on the Brink explores the technological advances in whaling that resulted in the dramatic decline of the Blue’s populations around the world, and the international recognition in 1966 of the need of conservation of whale species. Blue Whales featured in Eden’s history in 1908 when a mother and calf were cornered and herded by Killer Whales into the Bay and finally harpooned by Archer James Davidson near Davidson Whaling Station. The mother was the largest whale to be harpooned

by hand at the time, measuring 97 feet long (29.5 metres). This made the Guinness Book of World Records in 1984. A detailed account of the hunt featured in a Sydney newspaper and is both an intriguing and disturbing account to read. Though an uncommon sight, Blue Whales have been seen returning to the Bay on occasion. Blue Whales on the Brink features stunning documentary footage of Blue Whale populations off the South and West Australian coasts. Explore what we do and don’t know about Blue Whales, reflect on historical and contemporary human activity affecting populations and the role we can play in the conservation of these majestic creatures. The exhibition runs from 1 May to 10 October 2010. Left: Archer James Davidson standing on top of 97ft Blue Whale harpooned in 1908. Technological changes meant an increase in the number of whales that could be hunted and processed.

Men of Timber Exhibition explores Eden's timber history The Men of Timber exhibition explores the dangerous aspects of occupations associated with the timber industry as well as the historical aspects of living and working conditions. The exhibition also highlights the commitment of the National Timber Workers’ Memorial committee to bring to Eden a place of national commemoration for fallen Australian timber workers. The timber industry in Australia extends as far back as to the settlement of the colony in 1788. Timber was cleared from the land to fulfil the need to build shelter and furniture, provide fuel for cooking and for transport requirements such as building ships and carts. Red cedar was the first export of the colony of New South Wales and cedar

getters existed until the end of the industry in 1910. One of the earliest known exports of timber from Eden occurred in 1843 when the ship St Heliers left the wharf with a load of wattle bark and other goods bound for London. The first rail service in NSW opened on 26 September 1855. With the increasing use of railways across the country the demand for railway sleepers saw the emergence of a steady sleeper cutter industry. By 1907 there were 50 sleeper cutters producing sleepers made of Woollybutt, Blackbutt and Grey box.

The last sleeper shipment from Eden was the Lantao which departed on 28 October 1961 bound for Pakistan. Eden was the first Australian town to begin exporting woodchips. This began in 1968 when the state government entered into a 20 year agreement with Harris Daishowa (Aust) Pty Ltd for the sale of woodchips from the Crown’s forests. By 1969 the chipping plant built on the shore across the bay from the town of Eden was operational. The first woodchip shipment took place in January 1971. Men of Timber exhibition runs from 1st May to 10 October 2010

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Websites to suit every business and budget

This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. There is an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms. Pambula Lake is just south where there’s a boat ramp and oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters.

Do your Christmas shopping at Toad Hall's closing down sale After decades as one of Pambula's best-known businesses, Toad Hall will be closing its doors at the end of this month. But before it does shut down, Toad Hall is having a Closing Down sale, with reductions of up to 50% on some items*. Owners Sandra Spangler and Keith McKee are inviting visitors and locals alike to get their Christmas shopping done early this year by taking advantage of Toad Hall's sale. Standing proudly at the roundabout on the corner of Toallo and Quondola Streets in Pambula, Toad Hall has been

operating as a retailer of craft since 1971. Sandra and Keith have continued Toad Hall's reputation for carrying a great collection of local crafts and gift ware, and it is with a great deal of sadness that they have made the difficult decision to close the business. Reflecting on the current business environment, Keith said, "These days people seem to be spending their money on mobile phones and big screen TVs; few people are interested in crafts any more. Consequently, we've decided to close the doors. All of our stock is on sale, or you can make us an

offer, as long as it's reasonable!" There are three rooms to wander through, with some of the treasures to be found including toiletries like soaps and hand-creams, jewellery, pottery, cards, mobiles, tea towels, paintings, woodwork, incense and baby wear. Toad Hall also has a great range of Settler teddy bears that really need to find a new home. Toad Hall is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00am to 4.30pm. *Please note - craft items on consignment are not reduced in price.

We specialise in traditional, wooden and soft toys for babies and children to 7 years

One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time. Built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. The Museum provides a secure site for displays and stories of local history, including: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by

investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steam ship Company that provided transport for people and goods along the coast before roads were built; • Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula. The Museum is open from 1.30pm – 4pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (closed Christmas Day). Entry is $3 and children are free. Phone 6495 4844 for information

Meet and Name An Albino Echidna

Have you ever met an albino echidna? Potoroo Palace Native Animal Education Sanctuary is extremely pleased to announce the arrival of their Albino Echidna, which really is white all over and even has the tiniest red eyes. Visitors to Potoroo Palace will have the opportunity to get up close and see for themselves what a truly unique animal an albino echidna is. Of course ‘Spike’ and ‘Priscilla’ our two other echidnas will also be happy to interact with the visitors. Our new echidna has come to Potoroo Palace after being rescued from attacking birds near Sanctuary Point. Unfortunately being born albino meant this echidna couldn’t rely on camouflage for protection leaving it extremely vulnerable to attack by predators. When it was taken to the vet, tests revealed it was suffering from acute malnutrition. After some wonderful care and attention from her Native Animal Network Association carers the echidna has made wonderful progress and is growing steadily. Because of the amount of intensive care received, our new echidna is lovely and cuddly and loves nothing more than a pat and cuddle. Come along and meet her when she makes her Park debut on June 28th and help us give her a name.

north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting some $50m of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for anyone new to the region; the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre,

which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.

Cobargo

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.. Take a stroll around the town and experience the delightful ambience of yesteryear. Take your pick from an array of art and craft, rare gems and jewelry, pottery, woodwork & leatherwork, or hunt among the collectables, curios and old wares on offer. Recharge your batteries at Valley Edge Cafe with great coffee and a fresh, delectable menu. Take a few minutes to enjoy the beautiful photography that adorns the walls - there are some

Monthly Garden Advice The Essential Rose In recent years an enormous amount of work has been done to re-establish the rose as an integral part of any landscape. From the tried and true Hybrid Tea and Floribunda varieties to new climbers and many new varieties from overseas the rose is making a great comeback. Roses are hardy dry-tolerant plants that will provide you with many hours of pleasure, whether you use them as cut flowers or as something to admire in your garden. They will grow in most soils and environments, but to get the best results from them some special care and preparation is necessary. Choose an open sunny position where they will get at least six hours

of sunlight a day. The site should have plenty of air movement around the plant to decrease the conditions suitable for fungal leaf problems like black spot and powdery mildew. Avoid draughty places between buildings as they often receive very little sun, can be dry and in summer warm winds tunnelling through these areas can rapidly dry the foliage. If you live in a frosty area you should avoid positions at the base of slopes, where frost collects. This can sometimes be a problem in late winter when the roses are starting to shoot new foliage, resulting in frost burn of the new foliage. A well-drained soil is essential and

the incorporation of well- rotted cow manure or a commercial planting compost to your existing soil prior to planting will encourage the plant to grow rapidly and healthily. The purchase of your plant is very important. Buy healthy plants. Do not attempt to buy cheap inferior plants, as these often have been neglected in the retail outlet and will probably disappoint with poor regrowth. Look out for dry or shrivelled stems as this indicates a plant that has been neglected, and these plants will either suffer extensive die-back or completely die. After the decision has been made to plant a rose and a site prepared, call in and talk to your nursery person to make your selection. Their roses have been selected to suit the climatic conditions, whether you live on the coast or inland. Also discuss with them the future maintenance of the plants. Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Fishing Report Winter is finally here and with it comes opportunities galore for the dedicated angler fishing the Far south Coast of NSW! Beaches: Have been fishing extremely well for big salmon to 3kg and XOS tailor. This will continue this month with most beaches holding fish. Look for deeper gutters close to shore with a lot of white water. Best baits are pilchards, blue bait, surf poppers and metal shiners. Using both paternoster and Ezy-rig combinations with a 10ft surf rod is best in the tackle department. Most productive beaches to try at present are North Tura, Cuttagee, Gillards, Tilba, Brou and Congo. Rocks: It’s time for the bread and butter species. With the cooler water blackfish, drummer and bream will be available on most rock ledges. Using cunjevoi, cabbage weed, and fresh prawns should see a fish or two. Almost any headland with a decent wash will produce fish. Expect salmon on the outside wash zones also! Better ledges to try are Tura Head, Tathra Head, Mystery Bay and Blackfellows south of Tuross. Offshore: Should still be yellowfin tuna and albacore for those willing to travel to the shelf. Trolling lures and live baiting/cubing the best methods with yellowfin tuna of late averaging 30 40kg with 80kg fish possible. Inshore,

snapper, morwong and flathead will be available on most reefs. Fresh cuttlefish and squid the top baits, with soft plastics catching some of the bigger snapper especially in water 10 metres and less close to shore. Best reefs would be Bunga, 4 and 6 mile, SW corner of Montague Island and Potato Point in 60 - 70 metres of water. Estuaries: Still fishing well despite the cooling water. Bream, flathead, blackfish and big tailor will make most estuaries home. Fresh prawns, live nippers and striped tuna cubes good bait for bream and flathead. Smaller chrome

lures up to 30 gram ideal for tailor with fresh green weed for the blackfish. Softplastics and hard bodied lures will also work for bream and flathead. Better estuaries at the minute are Pambula, Bega River, Narooma and Batemans Bay. Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures, and provides guided fishing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. With over 20 years experience in the industry, Stuart really knows his fishing. Check out his website at www.ausfishing.com.au for more information, or call Stuart on 0400 062 504 or 02 6495 9902 to book a fishing experience you won’t forget.
