Merimbula whale watching This month there are thousands of Humpback Whales migrating south along the eastern coast of Australia. Merimbula is a wonderful place to view whales from! It is only a very short (8 minute) cruise out into the Merimbula Bay and from this point whales can be found! Our crew are the most experienced crew on the South Coast. We have been whale watching in Sydney over the winter and have observed thousands of humpbacks on their northern migration. All of these whales are now heading south, bringing their young calves with them! Our boat is a 75 passenger powered catamaran with both indoor cabin and outdoor viewing designed for whale watching. This gives you space to move about and a stable platform from which to enjoy the whales. She will travel to and from the whales quickly maximising your time with the whales.

Merimbula Marina operates multiple cruises each day from 15 August to 20 November. We are a family owned and operated business and believe in responsible and respectful whale watching practices. We have a deep love of the ocean and all its amazing creatures and enjoy sharing this with our passengers. In 2016 and 2017 we had 100% whale sightings on all cruises throughout the season! We are looking forward to another fantastic whale watching season in 2018! We offer a money back guarantee that whales will be sighted on your cruise – see website for full details.

2.5hr Express Whale Watch Cruise: $69 Adult. $65 Senior/Student Concession. $50 Child 1-15 years. Family Ticket (2 adults and 2 children under 15 years) $199. Departing daily.

Check out our daily photos and whale reports on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ Merimbulamarina. Like our page and download photos taken from your cruise for free!

From The Editor Welcome to the September/October edition of the Far South Coast iMag. Spring has arrived - I'm writing this in mid-August, after a wintry blast that saw very light snow only 50km away, I'm glad it should be warming up soon. Hopefully the new season brings some much-needed rain. As always, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to events over September and October. The Bega Valley Motor Expo is first up... the Bega Showground will fill with the sound of revving engines on Saturday 7th September - check page 21 for details. The Festival of Open Minds returns to Bega on September 14th; this Ted style talk fest with a theme of 'People with Oomph' will inspire and uplift you. Read more on page 36. The inaugural Eden Caravan Muster runs from 14th - 22nd September and promises to be a hoot, with lots of events and activities planned around Eden. Check it out on page 8. Montreal Goldfield is busy with its Retracing the Bermagui Mystery event on 15th September and its annual Heritage Day on 12th October - find out more on page 31. Four Winds has the Windsong Series 3 featuring international guest violinist Anthony Marwood, followed by Singing for Your Soul - a great opportunity to let your voice fly (no prior experience necessary) - details on page 32. Our What's On listing is on pages 36 - 37 - it's all you need! Keep your iMag handy, download it from our website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au or from our Facebook page - Far South Coast iMag, and enjoy!

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

6

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafÊs, restaurants, retailers,

pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Panboola is located at the southern end of Pambula, and is a wonderful example of a community-led environmental restoration project. With hundreds of native trees, shrubs etc. planted, Panboola has transformed grazing paddocks into a thriving wetland area, with several walking tracks to explore. It's currently home to thousands of flying foxes who are visiting from Bega to feed on local flowering eucalypts. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshlyshucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Broadwater Oysters - don't go home without them Like fine wine and cheese, oysters have a distinct flavour depending on where they are grown. Oysters from Pambula Lake have a smooth, subtle flavour influenced by the water they are produced in. The clean, clear waters of Pambula Lake are a combination of fresh water moving down the Pambula and Yowaka rivers, and tidal exchange from the Pacific Ocean - perfect for the production of the finest Sydney Rock Oysters. Broadwater Oysters have been farming and processing the native Sydney Rock Oysters in Pambula Lake for 20 years. In fact co-owner of Broadwater Oysters Sue McIntyre recently received an award recognising her service to the industry at the NSW Oyster Conference. Congratulations Sue! You can visit Broadwater Oysters on the Pambula Lake foreshore - talk to farmers about how oysters are grown and watch oysters being freshly opened for local restaurants and the general public. Situated between Pambula and Eden, turn off the Princes Highway onto Landing Road and

VISITOR INFORMATION Beach Street, Merimbula Ph: 02 6495 1129

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

12

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Today, the Wharf is a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground

located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, with gourmet delis, cafĂŠs and restaurants. Tathra Beach Tapas is located right on the sand next to the Surf Club, and features local produce and seafood, great coffee, cake, snacks and is fully licensed. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

28

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Sally Wilson Art sells fine art, individually-crafted bracelets as well as whimsical merchandise like cards, mugs, tea towels, hand-made bags and more.

Little Birdie Vintage Recently relocated to the beautifully restored White Horse Cottage (it's the big blue building half way up the hill on the main street - you can't miss it), Little Birdie Vintage is an eclectic mix of Beautiful Vintage Homewares and collectables. It features an amazing collection of Vintage treasures, hand-picked from around the globe. Owner Tess specialises in Vintage and midcentury modern (MCM) furniture, and has several pieces on display in the light-filled shop. There's also quality vintage clothing, collected over many miles and years. It's possible that with the cold, wintery weather, the collection of warm woollen skirts, kilts and hand-knitted

jumpers and cardigans has sold out, but it's worth checking. You'll even find some amazing men's designer clothes from the 1940s through to the 1990s. In addition to gorgeous vintage and MCM timber furniture, there's also cane settings, homewares and handmade rugs. If you're looking to incorporate some greenery into your home, Tess has a wide range of indoor plants available for sale. CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in and explore Gulaga Gallery Try fishing at Mystery Bay

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. 38

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Reva at Tilba has divine jewellery from Australia and around the world, and Gulaga Gallery has hemp and bamboo clothing.

How rare! The store is bright and colourful, with a gorgeous leather chesterfield, for weary legs, taking centre stage. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling, displays are exquisite, and one has the sense, delightfully, of being transported to another time. Current collections include swarovski crystals, opals with settings designed in the on site studio, 18 carat gold rings from Germany, art deco earrings from London, vintage and baked enamel pieces from Paris.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Original Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the 1850s gold rush theme park Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous awards at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards including the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Breathtaking Batemans Bay Things to See & Do Explore the Clyde River by boat, houseboat or kayak Taste some fresh oysters at the Oyster Shed Enjoy the beaches nearby Visit the many National Parks in the region, from hinterland forests to coastal gems VISITOR INFORMATION Princes Hwy, Batemans Bay Ph: 1800 802 528 info@eurobodalla.com.au

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019. Now a thriving regional centre and major

tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great National Parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

The Oyster Shed - growing great oysters in the Clyde There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have such easy access to the beautiful Clyde River, running right through the township. If you’re down around the water’s edge, make sure you drop in to see Jade and Enola at The Oyster Shed, the last shed on Wray St, located on the northwestern bank of the Clyde River. They sell fresh Sydney rock oysters and pacific oysters grown organically from their own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour and are a highly nutritious food, being

rich in omega 3 oils, iron, zinc, iodine, vitamins A, B complex and C. These days, you can be much more adventurous in the kitchen with oysters than just serving the old standards of oysters kilpatrick or mornay. Just ask Enola - she’s got lots of recipes for a more contemporary approach. The Oyster Shed is also a great spot for a picnic. All you need is the picnic rug, a bottle of wine and some freshly-opened oysters, then relax and enjoy the spectacular Clyde River views. And to keep the holiday vibe going, take some oysters home with you! www.oystershed.com.au
