November Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - we hope you enjoy your visit in this fantastic region. With spring nearly over, the whales have just about finished their southern migration to the waters of the Antartic. However, it's still worth heading out to sea to catch a glimpse of the last of the whales as they make their way down the Coast. November also means the horse racing season is in full swing, and the Melbourne Cup is the pinnacle event of the Spring Racing Carnival. Lots of our advertisers are having Melbourne Cup day lunches - check our What's On section on page 22 for all the details. In keeping with the emphasis on fashion that comes with the Spring Racing Carnival, Aquablu Resort Wear are holding their fourth Fashion Parade in the Merimbula Plaza on Saturday 26th November. The parade is a great opportunity to pick up some insight into this summer's fashions in time for

Contents the end of year party season. There will be prizes to give away and it's Aquablu's Christmas party as well, so it should be a fun morning. Don't forget the fantastic photographic exhibition at the Eden Killer Whale Museum - 'Little Shipmates - Seafaring Pets'. The images capture how much pets meant to the seafarers who were often away from their families for months at a time. A travelling exhibition from the Australian National Maritime Musuem, this exhbition is one not to be missed. Keep your Imag handy as you travel around the region or check out our website at: www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Do drive carefully, especially at night there's lots of wildlife around. Enjoy!

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

2

century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay - the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

A new photographic display at the Eden Killer Whale Museum will show how pets have been cherished on board ships as loyal travelling companions on many sea voyages. Little Shipmates: seafaring pets, an Australian National Maritime Museum travelling exhibition, features 22 photographs from the museum’s Sam Hood Collection. The images capture how much pets meant to many seafarers in a life where they were often far from their families for long periods of time. Photographs of cats, dogs, monkeys and birds on board ships clearly show their owners attachment. Sydney photographer Sam Hood took hundreds of photographs of crew members between 1900 and the 1950s as souvenirs for their visit or to send home to families. One photograph on display shows an English ship’s officer with his pet monkey, evidence of the many exotic ports seafarers visited during their voyages. Others show how cats and dogs became treasured members of the crew as in the Scottish steamer Strathgarry’s photo showing the ship’s company including the captain’s terrier and two cats. Sam Hood created an unparalleled record of Sydney’s maritime life from the 1890s to the 1950s, capturing Located in the heart of beautiful Eden, only minutes walk to club, hotels and shopping centre

images of ships, crews, cargo handling, shipbuilding and launching, wartime scenes, pleasure boating and sailing through his lens. Little Shipmates – seafaring pets is open from 16 October - 23 January '11. The Eden Killer Whale Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9.15am - 3.45 pm and Sundays 11.15am – 3.45pm. Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Two of Pambula's famous houses still standing include Covington's, formerly owned by Syms Covington who travelled to Australia with Charles Darwin on the Beagle, and McKell's Cottage, where former NSW Governor William McKell was born. The building formerly known as 'Toad Hall' and the Pambula Courthouse are other examples of heritage buildings still very much in use today. The village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are still visible today - have a look at the midden at Bar Beach on the road to the Wharf. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world - the Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early history. With its location on the shores of Merimbula Lake, there are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au There is a huge range of activities and attractions in and around Merimbula to suit young and old, the adventurous and the not-so-adventurous. The jetty opposite the Lakeview Hotel and Mitchie's Jetty in Fishpen are the home bases for charter operators specialising in whale-watching or deep-sea fishing. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, tenpin bowling, experiencing family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes to provide a caffeine boost if the energy levels start to fall. There's also a great range of restaurants, clubs and the Lakeview Hotel offering a host of dining experiences.

The unmistakable color The one-of-a-kind taste The unparalleled flavor of relaxation For some moments, only a Corona will do

A Four Day Festival Of Wind And Waves The 30th annual Merimbula Corona Classic will be held at Merimbula’s Main Beach from 25th to 28th November. This celebration of wind and waves attracts wave sailors, kite surfers and Stand Up Paddlers from Australia and around the globe, including current and past world and Australian champions. Depending on conditions the water action begins early off Main beach with the Stand Up Paddle (SUP) surfers getting as many waves as possible before the morning on-shore breeze

gets up, driving them out of the water to be replaced by kite surfers and wave sailors. For spectators there is plenty to see from vantage spots such as Bar Beach and the Wharf, however the best spot is at Main Beach where you can safely view all the action as well as enjoying the Merimbula Sailboard Club's famous barbecue. With over $50,00 in prizes to be won the action will be hot as competitors vie for a share of the prize pool plus the prestigious trophies awarded to top

performers in a variety of categories. During the four days some kite surfers and SUP surfers will go to other nearby locations to practice and test the conditions such as Pambula River Mouth and Short Point, all with good viewing access. Local ABC radio 810 AM/106.3 FM and 2EC radio 765 AM/102.5 FM report regularly on the action, or check at the Tourist Information Centre for daily locations. For 30 years, the Merimbula Sailboard Club has run this event; go to merimbulasailboardclub.com.au for info.

Try Caneoing @ Brogo Wilderness Canoes Spring is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warming up, and the crowds have yet to arrive. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native birdlife and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam.

To really explore the beauty of the Brogo Dam and Brogo Wilderness, hire a fully equipped canoe from Dave and Sue at Brogo Wilderness Canoes. Their canoes are safe, stable “Canadians”, and all safety gear, maps and instructions are provided. For tranquillity and beauty it’s hard to beat - you can explore forest gullies, swim, bring a picnic lunch and stop herever you desire. A 2 - 3 person canoe with all safety gear costs just $25 per person for a half day, with children half price. For bookings contact Dave or Sue on (02) 6492 7328.

Learn about local native animals at Potoroo Palace “What is a Potoroo?”, “Does an echidna have a tail?”, “Why are dingoes so important to our eco-system?”, “Why do Koalas spend so much time asleep?” “How do pythons keep their eggs warm for hatching?” To find the answers to these questions, visit Potoroo Palace Native Animal Education Sanctuary on the Princes Highway just south of Yellowpinch Dam. Informative and entertaining Keeper Talks are held twice daily at 11am and 2pm, during which visitors get very close to and even touch many of the animals. Prior to Keeper Talks, visitors receive an overview of the Park and its animals whilst enjoying the popular Train Ride. More adventurous visitors can delight in hand-feeding the kookaburras or tawny frogmouth. For the ultimate experience, try an ‘Up Close and Personal Encounter’ with dingoes on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (please note there is an extra charge for these encounters). Head down to the Blue Wren Café and let chef Craig Hiscocks tempt you with one of his many culinary delights. Craig uses locally sourced organic ingredients and as the café is licensed, a fine selection of wines and beers is available to enjoy with your meal. Children will love the great Kids Menu. If you are after something light, relax with a cup of Byron Bay Fair Trade coffee and a delicious slice of fresh home made cake. Aquablu Resort Wear owners Margaret Venables and Cathy Foster love showing off their new stock, so once again they've organised a fashion parade, their fourth since taking on ownership of the boutique. Held on Saturday 27th November at 11am in the Merimbula Plaza courtyard, the parade is part of Aquablu Resort Wear's Christmas Party for 2010 and all are welcome. The parade is a great opportunity to check out the latest fashions, as models will be wearing selected items from Aquablu's new summer range. There will also be lots of give-aways during the parade. Aquablu has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, so you can purchase the latest fashions and enjoy your shopping experience. Aquablu is the exclusive stockist of NYDJ Jeans from the USA. Bega

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 5 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a

place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for anyone new to the region; housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery, which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

Bush walking in and around Tathra Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy blackcockatoos, listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds, frogs and water dragons. Continue through the Reserve until you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium.

Mogareeka - Moon Bay - Wajurda Point From the car park at the end of Bay Drive, Mogareeka follow the welldefined track through former farmland, complete with old sheds and remnant garden, for a kilometre before arriving at Moon Bay in Mimosa Rocks National Park. The track meanders through dry eucalypt forests and rainforests An easy one hour return walk. From Moon Bay you can continue walking on to Wajurda Point. From the Moon Bay carpark a step-free natural surface track leads out to a lookout on the point. From here you'll see a magnificent panorama to the north, from Nelsons Beach below, across to Baronda Head, up to the Mimosa Rocks, and with a backdrop of Mumbulla Mountain and Gulaga in the distance. This extra section takes about 20 minutes and is rated as easy. Kangarutha Track The 9km Kangarutha Track runs along the spectacular northern shores of Bournda National Park. Begin Kianinny Bay near Tathra, or at the Wallagoot Lake Boat Club at the southern end. The track takes in the rugged coastline, with many small sandy or pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs, but not

Visit historic Montreal Goldfield The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site that lies 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a relatively intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is unique in that it is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This however provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the full Montreal story; a story of mystery, history and fascinating anecdotes. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors to wander through the beautiful forest and tree ferns. During

the goldrush period, the miners, in their frenzy for profit, laid the area bare; hard to imagine now given the lushness of the area. The track itself is approximately 200m long and most is wheel chair accessible, and there are plenty of strategically located benches along the track. The tour itself takes around 1 ¼ hours and toilet facilities are available. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm. If you have a group of more than 12, you are welcome to contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. Admission is $5pp. Visit www.montrealgoldfield.org.au for info.

VALLEY EDGE

Opened in 2006 and roasting since 2008, Valley Edge specialises in sourcing and roasting high quality, environmentally sustainable coffees for the Bega Valley. At Valley Edge we are often asked questions concerning the ethics of our trade in coffee beans; at present, all our coffees are from traceable Estates and either certified Rainforest Alliance or Shade Grown. At Valley Edge we believe the biggest impact consumers can have is by choosing between Sustainable and Unsustainable coffee. Unsustainable Coffee: Large commercial coffee roasters create demand for high yield, low quality sun coffees and pay farmers low prices. These coffees require high inputs of chemicals and contribute to the destruction of tropical ecosystems. This is roasting only for profit. Sustainable Coffee: Consumers and Small Batch Specialty Roasters pay higher prices for quality and environmentally certified beans. As the specialty market grows, more farmers are rewarded with higher prices for top grade, environmentally friendly coffee. Coffee lovers get fantastic flavour, growers get a better deal and the planet survives a little longer. Valley Edge, 59 Princes Highway, Cobargo Ph 6493 6007

Monthly Garden Advice Perennial Delight We often think of perennials simply as a way to provide quick garden colour or in most cases, just plain hard work and generally cannot be bothered including them in the garden plan. Perennials should not be underestimated as they encompass an enormous diversity in foliage colour and flower type, textures and habit. This special group of plants are relatively cheap to buy, can be easily propagated to spread them further

around the garden, are tough, adaptable, and above all, versatile. Trees and shrubs will provide the framework for your garden, yet on their own, provide very little colour or interest and without perennials will generally be fairly staid. Perennials brighten the garden and provide continuous variety of flower, foliage and form. Think of them as a colour palette for your garden to be used to fill in the broad lines of the

more permanent features. Perennials occur in several types; some are evergreen and don’t have a period of dormancy, but generally what we know as perennials are herbaceous, and usually have a period of dormancy when they die back to a permanent root stock, most commonly during winter. There are also many perennials that are extremely drought tolerant and require very little water to keep them going. Look at your garden and you will certainly find a spot to plant a perennial that will certainly “fit the bill” for what you have been searching for. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source

of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in

Fishing Report & Tide Chart - November Summer is almost upon us and with it comes the promise of warmer water, longer days and heaps more fish for everyone. Beaches: Bream and whiting numbers will be on the increase with most beaches producing. Using fresh bait like live beach worms and pipi just past the shore break in deeper gutters will produce the goods. Fishing rocky corners of beaches with a lot of whitewater is dynamite for the bream, with burley also increasing catch rates. Salmon, tailor and yellow-eye mullet will be available too with chrome lures, pilchards and bluebait on paternoster rigs ideal presentations for the pelagic species. Better beaches to try are Tura, Gillards, Cuttagee, Camel Rock, Congo and Barlings. Rocks: Salmon numbers along the South Coast have been the best for years with anglers having a great time catching them on lures and whole pilchards. Deeper ledges and break walls have produced with Tura Head, Tathra Head, Bermagui, Mystery Bay and Pretty point the pick of the bunch. Bread and butter species like drummer, blackfish and bream will be available in the washes with cabbage, prawns and cunjevoi the best baits. Using a float rig is ideal for blackfish, while lightly weighted bait is best for drummer and bream. Estuaries: I reckon November is the best month of the year to fish the estuaries. All species will chew with flathead, bream, blackfish, tailor, and mulloway all available. Warmer water species like whiting and flounder will be around to with squirt worms and bass yabbies the gun baits. Soft plastics will account for a lot of the

fish, especially flathead, but anglers using fish fillets like striped tuna and slimy mackerel will also do well. All estuaries will produce, with the bigger, deeper systems like Narooma and Batemans Bay ideal for mulloway and big, big flathead. Offshore: A great month to fish offshore for a wide range of species. Anglers after a feed should have no problem with sand and tiger flathead, snapper, morwong, pigfish and yellowtail kingfish all on the cards. Most reefs will hold fish with Montague Island and Mowarry Point the hotspots for kingies. Fishos using jigs, live bait and fresh squid will have best success. One thing to remember with kingfish is the legal size has now increased to 65cm so be wary of the changes. Out wider the water temperature will be hovering around 19 degrees and that means tuna. Yellowfin and albacore should be around with trolling skirted lures and bibbed minnows the best way to target them. You get to cover a lot of territory when trolling and once the fish are located, concentrate your efforts around them. Trolling from the 70 fathom line outwards is the go early in the season. Tight lines till next month. Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures, and provides guided fishing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. With over 20 years experience in the industry, Stuart really knows his fishing. Check out his website at www.ausfishing.com.au for more information, or call Stuart on 0400 062 504 or 02 6495 9902 to book a fishing experience you won’t forget.

Set on the banks of the Moruya River, the township of Moruya with its beautifully preserved buildings, museum and streetscape is a great place to explore. Moruya is famous for supplying the granite for the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place. These days, Moruya is known for the

large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Moruya has a fantastic array of specialty shops for those looking for something unique. Great cafes, restaurants and hotels with live music can also be found in this bustling little town. Moruya has a thriving arts community, with exhibitions frequently held at

The Old Dairy - A Collector's Visual Feast Having moved to the front of the ClockTower Arcade complex, The Old Dairy has undergone something of a re-vamp, with new products to match its new premises. The Old Dairy now has a great range of shabby chic home decorator embellishments including an array of vintage chic french country romantic swags, beautiful velvet and silk flowers, quilts and throws. For crafty types, The Old Dairy has several different styles of fringed beading, perfect for adding that special touch to home furnishings. There is also a great range of plain and scented candles, perfect for creating an intimate atmosphere. Not everything is new to the Old Dairy though; the fantastic range of dolls and teddy bears are still there to visit. Old favourites include the highly-sought after Charlie Bears, as well as teddies from Settler, Gund and Berrington Boyd to name just a few. The Old Dairy still carries its famous range of black and white cow ceramics that are always popular as gifts for collectors. The Old Dairy, Shop 2, ClockTower Arcade, Mogo. Phone 4474 3524.
