Merimbula whale watching This month there are thousands of Humpback Whales migrating south along the eastern coast of Australia. Merimbula is a wonderful place to view whales from! It is only a very short (8 minute) cruise out into the Merimbula Bay and from this point whales can be found! Our crew are the most experienced crew on the South Coast. We have been whale watching in Sydney over the winter and have observed thousands of humpbacks on their northern migration. All of these whales are now heading south, bringing their young calves with them!

each day from 23 August to 20 November. We are a family owned and operated business and believe in responsible and respectful whale watching practices. We have a deep love of the ocean and all its amazing creatures and enjoy sharing this with our passengers. For the past three consecutive years we had 100% whale sightings on all cruises throughout the season! We are looking forward to another fantastic whale watching season in 2019!

Our boat is a 75 passenger powered catamaran with both indoor cabin and outdoor viewing designed for whale watching. This gives you space to move about and a stable platform from which to enjoy the whales. She will travel to and from the whales quickly maximising your time with the whales.

We offer a money back guarantee that whales will be sighted on your cruise – see website for full details. We also invite you to book more than once during the season and offer you a 50% discount on your second and subsequent tours, valid for 2019 season.

From The Editor Welcome to the November/December edition of the Far South Coast iMag. Goodness - the last iMag for 2019! It doesn't seem that long ago that we celebrated the turn of the century. There's certainly a lot to celebrate when you live on the far south coast. One of those things is the annual migration of humpack whales. More and more whales are stopping each year to feed and play in our local waters. Set aside some time to go whale-watching as part of the Eden Whale Festival celebrations - read more on pages 8 and 9. The Narooma Boats Afloat Festival features wooden boats in many forms, and the sight of these gorgeous vessels cruising (or paddling) around Wagonga Inlet is enough to lift the spirits. Check page 41 for details. The watery theme hasn't finished yet - the Raging Bull Merimbula Classic attracts kite surfers, wave sailors and wind surfers from around Australia and the world. It makes for a spectacular sight on a breezy afternoon at Merimbula's Main Beach - don't miss it! See pages 16 - 17. The Band Together Music Festival has its feet firmly on the ground - it's raising money to support disaster relief in the Bega Valley. Created to support those involved in the Tathra/Reedy Swamp fires, Band Together features Killing Heidi, ARC Supergroup, Mental As Anything and Bachelor Girl, plus a ton of local talent, right here in the Bega Valley! Find all the details on pages 15 and 47. Our What's On listing is on pages 36 - 37 and details even more events, including Light Up Cobargo page 31. Keep your iMag handy, download a copy from the Far South Coast iMag Facebook page or www. farsouthcoastimag.com.au and share it with your friends!

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafÊs, restaurants, retailers,

pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Panboola is located at the southern end of Pambula, and is a wonderful example of a community-led environmental restoration project. With hundreds of native trees, shrubs etc. planted, Panboola has transformed grazing paddocks into a thriving wetland area, with several walking tracks to explore. It's currently home to thousands of flying foxes who are visiting from Bega to feed on local flowering eucalypts. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshlyshucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

VISITOR INFORMATION Beach Street, Merimbula Ph: 02 6495 1129

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

14

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

New sponsor for the Merimbula Classic 2019 Merimbula Sailboard Club will be hosting the 39th RAGING BULL MERIMBULA CLASSIC from 21st to 24th November at Merimbula’s Main Beach. We are proud to announce RAGING BULL SURF as our new major sponsor. Our partnership with RAGING BULL SURF will ensure the viability of the event well into the future. RAGING BULL SURF is a new surf brand local to Merimbula and will be launching at the RAGING BULL MERIMBULA CLASSIC. With summer coming fast there will be good vibrations all around for competitors and sponsors, locals and visitors alike at the 39th RAGING BULL MERIMBULA CLASSIC. For four days the action will be non-stop, featuring Stand up Paddle surfing and racing, kite surfing and wave sailing, great music, a trade expo and festival atmosphere with the club’s famous BBQ which will be running hot each day and on Friday evening from 5pm until 9pm. A Taste of Merimbula will have local foodies serving oysters, tacos and more. Drinks will be available from the Cooper’s Beer tent along with wines from Big Shot and Ragino’s locally blended coffee. All will be accompanied by local musicians on the event stage. There will be exhibitions of foiling and wing surfing in the mornings out the front of Main beach, and as the winds increase from midday, kite surfers and wave sailors take to the waters.

16

The Beach to Bar team relay will be held at 11am on Saturday and is a tag team event beginning at the Bridge and ending at Main beach. On Sunday at 11am the same teams race in the Battle of the Paddles relay at Main beach. Paddlers race through a marked course in the surf break. The standard of kite surfing is guaranteed to rise a notch as competitors in the Global Kite Surfing Association (GKA) return to Merimbula. These now internationally acclaimed kite surfers include James Storm Carew and Peri Roberts, two Merimbula stalwarts along with Francis Kelly from Canada. During the four days all the latest in water sports equipment and accessories will be on display at Ford Park for the Classic’s Expo, so check out what’s new for the summer. Spectators will see plenty of action, especially in the afternoons when strong onshore winds get the kite surfers and wave sailors out and into the waves. Visitors are more than welcome to join in for après events at Main Beach on Thursday and Friday, and at Club Sapphire where popular band the Figmentz will keep things rocking. For registration as an entrant head to www.merimbulasailboardclub.com.au or just come and enjoy what is sure to be a great four days in Merimbula. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Today, the Wharf is a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground

There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, with gourmet delis, cafĂŠs and restaurants. Tathra Beach Tapas is located right on the sand next to the Surf Club, and features local produce and seafood, great coffee, cake, snacks and is fully licensed. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

30

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Sally Wilson Art sells fine art, individually-crafted bracelets as well as whimsical merchandise like cards, mugs, tea towels, hand-made bags and more.

CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Explore the fascinating shops Take a tour with Tilba Talks Heritage Walks Drop in and explore Gulaga Gallery Try fishing at Mystery Bay

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. 38

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, and the bakery and pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. Lovers of leatherwork will want to make a beeline to Tilba Leather, with it's range of beautiful leather shoes, bags, belts, wallets and much more. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Reva at Tilba has divine jewellery from Australia and around the world, and Gulaga Gallery has beautiful hemp and bamboo clothing, music, jewellery, crystals, books and much more. Make the most of your time in Tilba by joining a tour with Tilba Talks Heritage Walks. Discover some of Tilba's secrets from days gone by, sample different locally made cheeses from Tilba Real Dairy and finish off with a delicious Devonshire tea.

Tilba Talks Heritage Walks There's so much to see and learn about Central Tilba. This National Trust listed village is one of the jewels of the far south coast. Having someone take you on a guided tour makes a lot of sense. Zoe is your guide for Tilba Talks, Heritage Walks, and she knows all the best places, the amazing history and where to find the best scones in Central Tilba.
