Merimbula whale watching This month there are thousands of Humpback Whales migrating south along the eastern coast of Australia. Merimbula is a wonderful place to view whales from! From The Editor Welcome to the November/December Far South Coast iMag. Thank heavens we've had some rain - at the time of writing in mid-October, the grass is lovely and green, albeit very short, so hopefully by the time you read this, it hasn't dried out too much. November/December are another action-packed couple of months, with heaps of events to check out, but when isn't there? Eden's Whale Festival is the first cab off the rank, held over the first weekend in November. This community get together celebrates the annual whale migration, and requires a huge effort to create such a diverse program, with lots of music, art and history, so get down to Eden and enjoy! Narooma's Boats Afloat weekend is on 9th - 11th November, and celebrates the beauty of traditional timber boats. From dinghies to steamers, motor boats and yachts, these beauties will be out and about for you to see on Wagonga Inlet all weekend. There's a Motorbike Show in Bombala on the 16th - 17th November, then the South Coast Nationals is on 24th November in Moruya, so fans of shiny, loud bikes and cars will be have plenty to keep them busy. It won't be the roar of engines but the sound of the wind and the waves providing the soundtrack to the Merimbula Classic, a festival of kite surfing, SUP surfing and racing and wave sailing. It's a real spectacle watching all the wave action - head to page 21 for more information. New Year's Eve has a couple of great family options - the Tathra Pig Races (yep, you read that right - pig races!) and the family friendly concert and fireworks at Merimbula’s Ford Park. See our What's On pages (p42 and 43) for all the details.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in
& surrounds
the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Join community celebrations at the Eden Whale Festival The Eden Whale Festival is a community run festival, committed to showcasing Eden’s history as well as its present day assets and beauty – and having a whole lot of fun doing it! The festival launch and officially opening will be held at the Eden Killer Whale Museum on Friday 2nd November at 1:30pm with special guest Paul Webster of the Port Authority of NSW. On Friday night, come along and enjoy the Wheelers Exhibition Centre opening, as this year we welcome six exhibitions combined in one location at 179 Imlay Street, Eden. The exhibition launch is on Friday November 2nd at 5:30pm and is supported by Wheeler’s Seafood Restaurant and Takeaway. Enjoy the art with live music, drinks, nibbles and a taste of Wheeler’s Sydney Rock Oysters, harvested in our pristine local waters. Competition winners will be announced at the opening at 6pm. Round out your Friday night with some local
music, food and kids play back down at the festival grounds. Don’t forget the new venue for this year’s festival - Eden’s sporting ovals at Barclay Street, (near Aslings Beach). The larger space means more opportunities for more entertainment, food and market stalls and of course, more visitors! Saturday will be a huge day ending in fireworks around 9pm, and Sunday also has a jampacked program full of more festival events to be found on the ovals and around town. Lifeline: Eden and the Sydney to Hobart yacht race One of the ultimate ocean racing experiences for sailors across the world is the annual Sydney - Hobart yacht race. Beginning in Sydney on Boxing Day (26th December), sailors face some of the toughest ocean and weather conditions as they travel down the south-eastern Australian coastline, across Bass Strait, then south along the east coast of Tasmania before heading up into the River Derwent, finishing at Hobart. Originally arranged as an informal cruise by a handful yachts down the east coast in 1945, a passing remark by a British naval officer, Captain John Illingworth, saw it evolve into a competition. Nine yachts entered the race, the first crossing the line after 6 days, 14 hours and 22 minutes. In 2017, a new race record was achieved by maxi yacht Comanche, finishing in 1 day, 9 hours and 15 minutes.
Since the Sydney-Hobart’s inception, Eden has played an important role for competitors. Before and after the race, Eden’s relatively safe harbour is a place to rest and replenish stores. During the race however, Eden is the last safe place for yachts to retire before crossing the Bass Strait, and the town’s facilities become much more important to injured sailors and damaged vessels.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.
Family focus at 2018 NYE Spectacular in Merimbula Ford Park in Merimbula is once again the venue for this year’s NYE event, but for 2018, the format is being revamped. A NYE family friendly event is planned, encouraging families to attend and stay for the whole festival, bringing chairs and a picnic to enjoy the wonderful music, food, and markets, festive atmosphere and of course, the amazing fireworks! The Festival will kick off at 10am with market stalls and food vendors open until 4pm. There will also be children's activities and jumping castles. A concert will commence at 5.30pm with a number of family-friendly acts. The highlight of the evening is of course the major fireworks display, happening this year from 9:30pm – 9.40pm. The Festival itself wraps up at 9.45pm to allow for the big clean up, but the fun doesn't end there.
A special 5-minute high altitude fireworks is scheduled to happen at midnight, and will be viewable from the surrounding Merimbula area. A small admission charge of $5 per person applies, with accompanied children under 12 admitted free. This allows organisers to provide for more fireworks for next year, and to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the event. With markets, a music concert and fireworks all in one, New Year's Eve in Merimbula promises to be one the whole community will enjoy.

Merimbula Classic - wind, waves, water and fun 2018 marks the 38th running of the Merimbula Classic, a celebration of wind and waves, with wave sailing, kite surfing and SUP surfing and racing in some of the nicest conditions the Sapphire Coast can produce. Members of the Merimbula Sailboard Club are renowned for their dedication to running two events each year - the Classic in November and its Malibu surfing competition, (held under varying names like The Conformal and The Malleable) each May. As well as being a great event for competitors and spectators, the Merimbula Classic is recognised locally as a popular community event. Totally run by volunteer members of the Merimbula Sailboard Club, over the years the event has contributed to many community organisations and needy causes. Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Today, the Wharf is a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground

located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, with gourmet delis, cafĂŠs and restaurants. Tathra Beach Tapas is located right on the sand next to the Surf Club, and features local produce and seafood, great coffee, cake, snacks and is fully licensed. The Tathra Beach Country Club's Golden Sands Chinese restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday. On The Perch Bird Park at Kalaru is short drive from Tathra, and is an experience you won't want to miss. You can enjoy a great coffee at the Brood Cafe at the bird park in very peaceful surroundings listening to the birds, and there's no park entry payable if you are visiting the cafe only.

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.
Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Reva at Tilba has divine jewellery from Australia and around the world, and Gulaga Gallery has hemp and bamboo clothing.
Find Tilba Real Dairy at the ABC Cheese Factory The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the manufacturing base of Tilba Real Dairy. The ABC Cheese Factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW. Today the ABC Cheese Factory is owned by local dairy farmers Erica and Nic Dibden who bottle their unhomogenised milk on-site and make cheese, cream and yoghurt. At the 2015 Royal Melbourne Fine Foods show, Tilba Real Dairy products received Gold medals for Haloumi and Low Fat Milk, as well as being awarded Grand Champion Dairy For The Dairy Produce Section. They also won Silver medals for their Full Cream Milk, Double Cream and Bronze medals for Persian Fetta, 3 Udders Brie And Yoghurt. Real Tilba Dairy products can be

Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, nestled between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet, with Gulaga Mountain (Mt. Dromedary) watching over the township. The spectacular scenery makes it the perfect place for a relaxed coastal holiday. The town retains a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafés and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a beach that's patrolled in summer, bike tracks and waterways to explore or fish in. With a choice of flat stretches or hills, there are numerous places to walk around town and

take in the spectacular views over the Inlet, the mountains and the ocean. Montague Island is located just offshore from Narooma and is a truly unique spot to visit, Twice voted as Tourism Australia’s top ecotourism destination. You can take a tour of the island and learn about its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history, or stay for a few nights in one of the Lighthouse Keeper's cottages. The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast, as well as being a breeding ground for 12,000 little penguins who come ashore at dusk after feeding at sea. Narooma is also renowned for its spectacular public golf course, ranked as one of the best in Australia. It's also a great place to go bike riding, with tracks around town that are perfect for kids to practice their riding skills on. If you're a hard-core mountain bike enthusiast, there are mountain bike tracks and sealed roads aplenty to check out, including some great tracks through local state forests and national parks. If you're looking for more leisurely pursuits, there are plenty of great cafés, restaurants and shops to experience.
Easts Holiday Park launch new Splash Park at Narooma Easts Holiday Park, located right on the inlet at Narooma, have recently opened their new indoor splash park, and it's a cracker. Adjacent to the outdoor pool, the splash park has all the splashing, spraying and dumping water activities you could possibly need. There are two water slides, one enclosed one which loops outside the building then back inside, and the other is a double, so that two children or two adults can slide together. The water temperature is set to approx. 26 degrees and the splash deck has underfloor heating, so if it's a little chilly outside, the splash park is still warm enough to enjoy. To help with the ecological footprint, the heating and cooling for the building is assisted by 2km of underground pipe. This geo thermal system is becoming more popular in Australia, as it uses the earth's temperature to heat or cool. Whilst the young ones are having a great time in the splash park, adults can relax in the 7m x
7m indoor spa. Heated to 30+ degrees, the spa is perfect for relaxing tired muscles and minds. Time is set aside where children can come and enjoy the spa with parents/carers. The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red 4 rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their NEW SOU TH southern migration during the spring months. Lifeline examines the historic connection between Eden and the Sydney - Hobart yacht race. The last port before Bass Strait, Eden is where yachts retreat to following gear failure, illness or extreme weather. Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019. tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’.
