Adventure Eden in

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

6

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

'Wild Catch' exhibition at Eden Killer Whale Museum Over 100 species of abalone can be found around the world and it has been a traditional food supplement valued by all first nation peoples that have had access to it. The growth of Australia’s abalone market was initially influenced by the migration of Chinese to the Australian goldfields, and later in the early 1960s as natural resources in other countries became overfished. In late 1963, a concentrated effort in the commercial abalone fishery started on the Far South Coast of New South Wales. With a restricted fishery in other parts of the country, NSW waters proved extremely attractive for divers to make big earnings, and it wasn’t long before abalone stocks became vulnerable to overfishing. Today, the commercial abalone fishery is a tightly regulated industry with a concern by all involved to ensure the longevity of the species, its natural environment and its long term availability for future generations. Abalone divers have been described by some

people as having a unique character that enables them to withstand the cold depths of the ocean in order to harvest by hand one of the world’s most unusual delicacies. Through objects, archives and interviews, Wild Catch explores the unique underwater ‘office’ of the abalone diver and the intriguing mollusc that has been a prized catch for thousands of years. 'Wild Catch' is only display until 15th December at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. killerwhalemuseum.com.au/ Local commercial abalone diver, John Smythe, continues to dive after 43 years in the industry. He represents the industry on national and state boards, and remains committed to industry research and sustainability. Photo: J Smythe.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafÊs, restaurants, retailers,

12

pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Panboola is located at the southern end of Pambula, and is a wonderful example of a community-led environmental restoration project. With hundreds of native trees, shrubs etc. planted, Panboola has transformed grazing paddocks into a thriving wetland area, with several walking tracks to explore. It's currently home to thousands of flying foxes who are visiting from Bega to feed on local flowering eucalypts. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshlyshucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Immerse yourself in nature at Panboola! Go for a stroll, enjoy a picnic, ride your bike, watch the birds or simply just ‘be’ in nature. It’s good for the body and it’s great for the soul. Located on the southern edge of the village, Pambula is blessed to have Panboola wetlands on its doorstep. Grab a snack from one of the many nearby cafes and head to the picnic tables by the side of Tip’s Billabong or enjoy the shade of the Waterbird Sanctuary. Panboola is a bird watchers paradise, a photographers delight and a lovely place for an easy cycle or walk. Bike riders love Panboola – it’s a perfect venue for families to enjoy a safe and easy ride together. Cycle around the Old Pambula Racecourse or pass through as a pleasant shortcut if you are riding out to lunch at Oaklands or the Longstocking Brewery. Brochures are available at each entry point highlighting the extensive network of walking

and cycling tracks, including a new grass track that meanders along the western boundary. The 2.6km walk out to the Pambula River is one of our best-kept secrets – you are almost guaranteed to have the sandy beach to yourself. Visitors are welcome to explore the entire site!! The Panboola Centre at Watson’s Waterhole (behind the Idlewilde Motel) provides an alternate entry point with sealed car park, picnic tables and stunning vistas. Looking for a Panboola inspired gift? Our lovely new 100% linen tea towels are available at Zoe.O Design in Pambula and at the Merimbula Visitors Information Centre. Panboola is cared by a team of dedicated volunteers and is open 7 days a week. Everyone is welcome and entry is free. Visit our website www.panboola.com or follow us on Facebook. See you there!

VISITOR INFORMATION Beach Street, Merimbula Ph: 02 6495 1129

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human MAHDNYwith W Aboriginal people making the occupation, most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

28

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Sally Wilson Art sells fine art, individually-crafted bracelets as well as whimsical merchandise like cards, mugs, tea towels, hand-made bags and more.

Bangles Gallery For 45 years the Bangles philosophy has been about quality, variety, affordable prices and great customer service, making it the perfect place to go shopping. The current owner, Derwood, has been involved with Bangles Gallery for 35 years, which is quite an achievement. Located in a magnificent two-storey timber building in the centre of Cobargo, pottery is at the heart of Bangles Gallery. A talented pool of craftspeople supply Bangles with a selection of traditional and modern Australian-made pottery, with a small amount sourced from overseas. There's an extensive range of cookware that is both beautiful and functional, vases, pots, and elegant decorative pieces. Bangles is not just about pottery though. A more diverse range of products has been introduced, including glassware, ironware, and leadlight lamps. Reflecting the Bangles philosophy, these pieces all represent great value for money without sacrificing quality. Browse through the well-stocked shop to find the perfect gift or something special for yourself - with a wide range of products and prices, finding the right gift won't be a problem, it will be deciding how many!

CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in and explore Gulaga Gallery Try fishing at Mystery Bay

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. 34

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Reva at Tilba has divine jewellery from Australia and around the world, and Gulaga Gallery has hemp and bamboo clothing.

Tilba Leather Tilba Leather was established in 1982, and proprietors Phil and Debbie Elton are very proud to have supplied their customers with quality leather goods for the past 32 years. It’s no surprise that the business is still going strong when you discover the quality of the beautiful leather products at Tilba Leather. Phil is a self-taught leather craftsman, and Tilba Leather is one of the reasons why Central Tilba is considered the Arts and Craft centre of the South Coast. From belts, bridles and whips, Tilba Leather stocks both new and exciting merchandise, as well as Phil’s creations, but the focus is firmly on Australian leatherwork. Phil also repairs all manner of saddlery. Tilba Leather also has a fantastic range of footware, with beautiful Naot and other brands of leather shoes, and quality ugg boots., perfect for when temperature starts to fall. Leading chefs line up for Narooma Oyster Festival Foodies can watch some of Australia’s finest chefs in action and up close at Narooma Oyster Festival on Saturday 4th May. “The Festival’s cooking demonstrations are really popular with both chefs and foodies,” said Festival spokesperson Niels Bendixsen. “It’s quite special to see such accomplished chefs sharing their skills and recipes in such a relaxed and approachable way.” This year’s stellar chef line-up is: • celebrated indigenous chef Mark Olive, aka ’The Black Olive’. His passion for fusing native food and culture with contemporary lifestyle cooking, has led to a huge international profile, particularly through his own TV series The Outback Café; • Paul Farag has built a big reputation in several notable Sydney restaurants, including Monopole, but now ishead butcher at The Fish Butchery which aims to change the way we perceive seafood by handling and cutting it in a different manner; • Peter Hilcke, Melbourne-based internationally acclaimed seafood chef who is passionate about beautifully cooked seafood and its health benefits, keeping it simple and having fun in the kitchen. He is an author, TV and radio personality; • Stephen Hodges, ‘part chef – part fish’ is a legendary seafood chef (The Pier Rose Bay and Fish Face) who is now following his passion for curing and smoking fish.

He encourages everyone to cook and eat more seafood. Also co-author of Australian Fish & Seafood Cookbook. • hatted chef David Tinker of The Sandbar at Batemans Bay is making an impact on the south coast culinary scene with his French-Japanese inspired cuisine. The cooking demonstration will be hosted by Kelly Eastwood of Eastwood’s Deli and Cooking School at Bermagui. Kelly and her colleague Aidan Barry will open the cooking programme showcasing their formidable skills and love of south coast produce. Chef Stephen Hodges says what he loves about Narooma Oyster Festival is the unique experience it offers. “South coast oysters are first class, and the reputation of its seafood and other produce from such a clean and green environment is really growing,” he said. “It’s a chance for us chefs to spend time with local producers, visit farms and chat with Festival visitors.” The Oyster Festival’s cooking demonstrations are from 10.15am to 3pm on Saturday 4 May. For those fine foodies after an added treat, try the unique Long Table Dining Experience on the shores of Wagonga Inlet the evening before (Friday). Imagine… freshly shucked Narooma oysters, a gourmet indigenous grazing table, followed by a three-course dinner featuring the best of South Coast produce. Narooma Oyster Festival combines a cosmopolitan quality food experience with great music and family entertainment. For more information, please check the Festival website www.naroomaoysterfestival. com. Check the Special Events tab for the Long Table details. Make the most of Easts new Holiday Park Splash Park Easts Holiday Park, located right on the beach at Narooma, opened their new indoor splash park last year, and it's a cracker. Adjacent to the outdoor pool, the splash park has all the slashing, spraying and dumping water activities you could possibly need. There are two water slides, one enclosed one which loops outside the building then back inside, and the other is a double, so that two children or two adults can slide together. The water temperature is set to approx. 26 degrees and the splash deck has underfloor heating, so if it's a little chilly outside, the splash park is still warm enough to enjoy. To help with the ecological footprint, the heating and cooling for the building is assisted by 2km of underground pipe. This geo thermal system is becoming more popular in Australia, as it uses the earth's temperature to heat or cool. Whilst the young ones are having a great time in the splash park, adults can relax in the 7m x

7m indoor spa. Heated to 30+ degrees, the spa is perfect for relaxing tired muscles and minds. Time is set aside where children can come and enjoy the spa with parents/carers. Take advantage of Easts new BBQ area with seating; stick around after dinner and enjoy the night sounds and sights. The Splash Park will be open to the public in the quieter months, so now is a great time to visit Easts and enjoy the indoor splash park. The kids will love it, and the adults can enjoy the spa. www.eastsnarooma.com.au

Eurobodalla’s River of Art Festival celebrates local creativity River of Art, the vibrant annual Eurobodalla festival that celebrates the extensive arts scene along the Far South Coast, kicks off again on Friday 17 May. Running until Monday 27 May, the River of Art Festival is a showcase for all types of art from paintings and sculpture through the performance art, film and poetry. Now in its 14th year, River of Art features over 100 events including Open Studios, music events, art prizes, poetry and a trail of art stretching from Durras to Bermagui. The festival is a community-led initiative. Cochaired by Di Jay and Robin Scott-Charlton, it is run by volunteers with support from local businesses, the Eurobodalla Shire Council and the NSW Government. Its aim is to present and promote local and visiting artists across all art forms. Festival highlights include a trail of open studios, which enables visitors to go behind the scenes and see artists in their own working spaces and learn about what inspires them. “Visitors can see first hand the way this stunningly beautiful part of Australia influences the region’s diverse and extensive output of art. We have extraordinary talents here who produce beautiful work – whether it’s painting or poetry, music or woodwork,” co-chair Robin Scott-Charlton said.

42

Another highlight is the $2000 River of Art Prize which will be awarded at the start of the Festival. Last year’s winner, local artist and creative arts coordinator, Indira Carmichael won first prize with her ink and pencil portrait, Midas’ Daughter. All artworks will be exhibited in Narooma throughout the festival. As a trail of art, the festival encourages visitors to plan their own journey through the many locations which feature Eurobodalla’s art. The festival’s own title, River of Art, plays on the shire’s name, Eurobodalla, which is Aboriginal for “land of many waters”. “This region is blessed with its dramatic ocean beaches, cliffs and headlands, the patchwork of lakes nestling the shorelines and the abundance of rivers and creeks. It’s not surprising that it’s home to such extraordinary art,” co-chair, Di Jay explained. River of Art is one of the region’s most popular festivals. So make sure you mark the dates in your calendar and book a bed if you plan to stay. The festival program will be available before Easter. You can stay in touch with festival developments through the website www.riverofart.com.au or follow up on Facebook.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Original Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the 1850s gold rush theme park Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous awards at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards including the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019.
