From The Editor Welcome to the May/June edition of the Far South Coast iMag. It was a pretty tough March for the region, with a devastating bushfire ravaging the township of Tathra and nearby Reedy Swamp. The community response to these fires has been nothing short of extraordinary, with everything from donations of money, goods and time. Volunteers have cleaned cabins in caravan parks to help get them ready for Easter and helped remove debris from homes - a wonderful demonstration of how strongly people feel connected to each other in this special part of the world. Makes you feel proud to live here! A huge fundraiser for Tathra is on at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club on Saturday May 26th. Band Together features the Hoodoo Gurus, 1927, Ol' 55 (Frankie J Holden & Wilbur Wilde), Daniel Champagne, the Figmentz and more. Details on page 28. The Narooma Oyster Festival is turning 10 this year - where did that time go? Cooking demonstrations by top chefs from the region and beyond elevate the humble oyster to rock-star status, as well it should be! Live music, food stalls and free rides for the kids make the Oyster Festival a must. See more on pages 38 - 39. The River of Art Festival kicks off on May 17th, and is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the arts and culture of the Far South Coast. Experience the creativity that flourishes in the Land of Many Waters. Read more on page 3.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

All of their food is made utilising fresh ingredients sourced locally where possible, such as the garlic prawns made with local Candelo garlic and the amazing Bega butter. Ollie Mason's has a huge gluten free offering and many dishes are or can be vegan with a small adjustment. They also serve rich coffee, an excellent range of teas and amazing cakes and tarts, most of which are also gluten free – just not guilt free. Ollie Mason's is located next to Eden Public School on the northern end of the CBD between the roundabouts. Call 6496 3888 for bookings. Open Wednesday Sunday, 8am-2pm.

Eden’s newest cafe, Ollie Mason's Piattini Cafe, puts a new twist on the traditional cafe menu. ‘Piattini’ refers to the Italian ‘small plate, saucer’ and is reflected in Ollie Mason’s menu with small serves of tasty treats from as little as $12.50. Hosts Jodie and Peter Dunnage have been in hospitality on the Sapphire Coast for the past seven years and have a dream to offer new and old dishes in a different way. If you have an adventurous palate, try a breakfast of the local Eden sardines crumbed with Italian herbs and served with a rich tomato passata, or avocado on crunchy corn chips with a soft poached egg and doused in dukkah and zataar and accompanied by marinated charred capsicum. Lunch delights include the very popular Persian Lamb, which is Jodie's special recipe accompanied by fresh and zingy tabouli, couscous

Sesqui: an event to remember at Eden Killer Whale Museum Over nine days in March 1993, the town of Eden was transformed into a bustling place of festivity and community celebrations to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the town’s proclamation. Driven by the Eden Killer Whale Museum’s volunteer management committee, it remains as one of Eden’s largest community events of all time. Businesses and community organisations banded together to offer a full program of events to commemorate Eden’s Sesquicentenary. They ranged from old time dances and stockman rides, art and craft exhibitions to special bowls, golf and bingo events. Tall ships, bus tours and walks across Eden contributed to the wide array of activities enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Above: The tall ship Bounty makes an impressive sight in Snug Cove with Mt Imlay watching over in the background. Locals and visitors took up the rare opportunity of cruising Twofold Bay aboard both the magnificent Bounty and the Lady Nelson during Eden’s 1993 Sesqui celebrations. Courtesy Rosalind Butt.

10

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Former residents travelled from across the country especially to share their memories and celebrate the hopes for the future. It is now 175 years since Eden was proclaimed a town, and 25 years since Eden’s biggest community celebrations unfolded. This exhibition from Eden Killer Whale Museum invites you to be a part of the celebrations that once were. Alongside Sesqui is another new exhibition, A potpourri of local life, which brings together fabulous historical photographs combined with objects from various time periods. It is a wonderful platform to reminisce on how people dressed, shopped, played and worked, and share with young ones how life used to be. Eden Killer Whale Museum is a multi-award winning destination that showcases an impressive wide range of cultural histories associated with this small coastal town of the Sapphire Coast. HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

12

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of the delicious freshly-shucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

14

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

Secrets of Bega Valley Regional Gallery 4 May – 16 June: Embellish - Costume in the Art of Hilda Rix Nicholas A cherished artist who is proudly considered a local, Hilda Rix Nicholas was a talented artist whose works are represented in all of Australia's major collecting institutions. COSTUME at BVRG will focus on the works held by the BVRG and the extensive collection of works held by the artist's family, many of which have not been seen publicly. A large part of the haute bourgeoisie social activity was focused on 'dress ups' and costume featured heavily in Rix Nicholas' work across her entire career. Works in this exhibition exclusive to BVRG will feature the original costumes from the artist's estate exhibited alongside the resulting portrait paintings. StunningTathra Things to See & Do Get up close to birds at On The Perch's walk-through aviaries Try mountain biking on the trails around Tathra Check out all the cafes and restaurants in town Enjoy a walk or bike ride from Tathra to the Bega River at Mogareeka

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. The Wharf was damaged during an East Coast Low that hit the region in 2016, but with repairs completed, the Wharf has resumed its role as a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is about 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafĂŠs and restaurants. Make sure you have a coffee at Cliff Place in Beach St at the top of town, to really appreciate Tathra's spectacular ocean views. Extensive renovations at The Tathra Hotel have now been completed with the Hotel reopening in mid- November. The Hotel features a micro-brewery, a bistro that's open for lunch and dinner, live music - and no poker machines. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Tathra - We're Open for Business Wondering how to show your support for the township of Tathra and the surrounding areas that were hit by a devastating bushfire on March 18th? The best way is to turn up. Come and visit....for an afternoon, a day, or a week, but turn up. Most all of Tathra's tourism-based businesses were unaffected by the fire, and the majority of restaurants, shops and accommodation providers are open and keen to keep the business wheels turning as much as possible in Tathra. The things that make Tathra so attractive were mostly untouched - the beautiful beaches, the historic wharf (only one post was singed!), the recently restored Tathra Hotel, and the surrounding spectacular coastal areas. Tathra's restaurants and cafes are still providing the same fantastic food and service, and will really appreciate your patronage, particularly as the quieter winter season is approaching.

Hire a mountain bike, surf board or stand up paddle board in Tathra and explore the gorgeous waterways. The famous Tathra Enduro Mountain Bike race is going ahead on the June long weekend, with track clearing and re-building well underway. If you're around on Saturday May 26th, make sure to get tickets for Band Together - a big night of music raising funds for the people of Tathra. Held at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club in Kalaru, headline acts include Hoodoo Gurus, 1927, Ol' 55 (Frankie J Holden & Wilbur Wilde), Daniel Champagne, the Figmentz and more. Buy your tickets online at farsouthcoasttickets. com.au. All money raised from this event will donated directly to the Mayoral Appeal Fund. Businesses reported a good Easter, so please, do your bit to support Tathra businesses and the wider community this winter, and turn up.

The Tathra region is bouncing back strongly from the recent bushfires. Whilst the fires were devastating to so many in the community, fortunately the tourism infrastructure remained largely untouched. The best way to support our community is to visit; for a day, for a night (or a week!), for a meal, for a surf‌ The pristine beaches and national parks, the historic wharf and refurbished hotel, surrounding estuaries, famous family fishing spots, and of course the community, look forward to seeing you. #TATHRASTRONG VISITTATHRA.COM.AU www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Narira River Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

30

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Twig & Feather is also full of scented delights, with hand-made candles and a unique range of homewares, kitchenware and stationery.

South Coast Leather Built in 1913, the shop that houses South Coast Leather started out as a grain store, then became a butcher's shop. In fact the original chopping block is still on display today. Today South Coast Leather stocks quality leather goods, from key rings to luggage and everything in between. Brands you'll find include leading labels such as Outback, Pack Saddle, Lambada, Modapelle Leather to name just a few. Classic leather belts are handmade on the premises.

Beautiful fashion, hats, accessories, European shoes and floor rugs can be found in the range, alongside legendary gear from R. M. Williams, including Akubra. Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Original Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the 1850s gold rush theme park Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous awards at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards including the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

Breathtaking Batemans Bay Things to See & Do Explore the Clyde River by boat, houseboat or kayak Taste some fresh oysters at the Oyster Shed Enjoy the beaches nearby Visit the many National Parks in the region, from hinterland forests to coastal gems VISITOR INFORMATION Princes Hwy, Batemans Bay Ph: 1800 802 528 info@eurobodalla.com.au

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019. Now a thriving regional centre and major

tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great National Parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee.

Clyde River Oysters at the Oyster Shed There’s something about being on or near the water that lends peace and tranquillity to the spirit, and Batemans Bay is blessed to have such easy access to the beautiful Clyde River, running right through the township. If you’re down around the water’s edge, make sure you drop in to see Jade and Enola at The Oyster Shed, the last shed on Wray St, located on the northwestern bank of the Clyde River. They sell fresh Sydney rock oysters and pacific oysters grown “organically” from their own leases, in one of the cleanest rivers in New South Wales. The Oyster Shed’s oysters have an excellent flavour, and are a highly nutritious food, being

rich in omega 3 oils, iron, zinc, iodine, vitamins A, B complex and C. These days, you can be much more adventurous in the kitchen with oysters than just serving the old standards of oysters kilpatrick or mornay. Just ask Enola - she’s got lots of recipes for a more contemporary approach. The Oyster Shed is also a great spot for a picnic. All you need is the picnic rug, a bottle of wine and some freshly-opened oysters, then relax and enjoy the spectacular Clyde River views. And to keep the holiday vibe going, take some oysters home with you! www.oystershed.com.au
