May Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - where else in the world would you want to be? When May arrives and the deciduous trees shed their summer greenery for magnificent shades of red, yellow, orange and brown, you know that autumn is well and truly here. It's a wonderful time on the coast for outdoor activities with the cooler days perfect for bushwalking, cycling and kayaking. Hardy souls may still brave the ocean, although it's at least 4 degrees too cold for me! In Narooma this month is the fabulous Narooma Oyster Festival, a wonderful celebration of life on the coast that ticks all the boxes for a good festival; a focus on food and wine, live music, activities for the kids, fireworks and art and craft exhibitions. One of the things that makes this Festival special though is the 12 metre oyster bar, and on the Saturday night, the Oyster Ball. If you haven't been to Narooma before or you haven't visited for a while, this is

Contents the weekend to go. See pages 31 to 33 for more information. The Sapphire Coast Music Society are bringing two outstanding students, Adam Szabo and Amy Putt, both currently enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium, to Wolumla for a concert on Sunday 29th May. This is a performance of special significance for budding classical students in the region as Adam and Amy ably demonstrate the musical heights that can be scaled by young people. There's more information on page 11. Don't forget the Bega Valley Shire Council has placed a ban on smoking at outdoor public locations - there are restrictions in the Eurobodalla Shire as well. We hope you have a truly memorable May wherever you are on the Far South Coast.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

2

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. In 2011, the Eden Whale Festival is being held over the weekend of 29th 30th October - don't miss it!

Eden Killer Whale Museum celebrates its 80th anniversary On 17 September 1930, while on his daily walk, Allie Greig, discovered the body of the killer whale known as Tom. This single event was the impetus behind establishing a museum in Eden a place to commemorate the intriguing natural story of the equal working relationship between the whalers and killer whales of Twofold Bay. Tom’s body was processed across the bay at Davidson Whaling Station on the shores of Kiah Inlet. Local entrepreneur, John R Logan drove the vision, and in February the following year sought out a committee to begin the project of establishing a home for the skeleton of Tom.

EDEN

The building was eventually completed in 1938 with Tom being installed early in 1939. In the interim, visitors to Eden were able to see the great orca skeleton in the private offices of Logan which were located close to the main business area of Imlay Street. Unfortunately Logan passed away late 1937, never seeing his dream realised. The museum building is now an iconic centrepiece overlooking the sapphire waters of Twofold Bay and has recently been recognised as holding collections of local, national and international significance. This year Eden Killer Whale Museum has a full programme of events planned to celebrate its 80th anniversary

Pambula

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late 19th century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining your website? companies in operation at the Mount ew website? Gahan site.

Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. One of these buildings is the former home of Syms Covington, assistant to the great naturalist, Charles Darwin, on the second voyage of The Beagle in the 1830s. He became postmaster of Pambula in 1854, but remained in contact with the renowned scientist, sending a box of Twofold Bay barnacles to help in Darwin’s research. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.

Pambula Beach has with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Bar Beach, Merimbula Š Paul Callaghan

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

www.monthlyimag.com.au

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, tenpin bowling, experiencing family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

The newest addition to our Potoroo Palace family, a very plucky little survivor, moved in to her new enclosure next to the Lizard sunning area in July after spending a mandatory six weeks in quarantine. She is a young white Echidna - a naturally occurring albino - which though generally rare in the animal kingdom, does pop up quite a bit in Echidnas. This little Echidna has had some extra challenges, which, combined with her unusual colouring, resulted in her being rescued from the wild and spending time in care. She was first spotted being attacked by birds in the wild, and upon further observation, discovered to be very malnourished, with a swollen sunburnt beak, and weak hind legs. She was nursed back to health by a devoted wildlife carer, and treated and assessed by a Vet. The Vet realised that her lack of speed and agility coupled with her reduced camouflage capability made her extremely vulnerable to attack by predators in the wild. It was decided that her best option for a happy healthy life was to live in a caring, protected natural environment that would cater for her needs, and that's where Potoroo Palace came in! Although she is still rather unsteady in

her walk, and takes a few tumbles from time to time, she never gives up and gets where she is going in the end. We know that she has calcium deficiency in her hind limbs, and upon consultation with an echidna expert, it appears that she may also have a genetic malformation of the pelvis. However, that does not stop her from exploring and living life to the full in her brand new home! Potoroo Palace is a not-for-profit organisation passionate about caring for the Earth, with people come from all over the world to Australia to see our native animals. You'll find Longnosed Potoroos, Macropods such as Eastern Grey Kangaroos and a swamp Wallaby, Bare-nosed Wombats, Short-beaked Echidnas, Long-nosed Bandicoots, Emus, Dingoes and Koalas. The Sanctuary is just a short drive from Merimbula, and with educational talks and the licensed Blue Wren Cafe offering fantastic lunches and great coffee, it's easy to spend the day at Potoroo Palace.

Sydney Con students perform in Wolumla When the students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music performed at Wolumla Hall last year, two students in particular stood out. As well as possessing great talent, their performance was polished and professional. They were cellist Adam Szabo, and pianist/accompanist Amy Putt. The Sapphire Coast Music Society committee was so impressed that they asked them back this year to perform in their own concert at Wolumla Hall on Sunday 29th May at 2.30pm. Adam Szabo commenced his studies at the Con in 2008, having been awarded the Board of Governors’ Scholarship. He is currently studying under internationally renowned cellists Daniel Yeadon and Zoltan Szabo. Adam is a highly sought after chamber musician and has played as Principal cellist of both the Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra and the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. He has recently performed a series of sonata recitals with pianist, Amy Putt, at the Sydney International Cultural Centre. In 2010 Adam toured Asia and Europe with the Australian Youth Orchestra, playing at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, an experience which Adam describes as ‘awesome’! Amy Putt is completing her final year of a Bachelor of Music (Hons)

at the Con, where she studies accompaniment with David Miller and Clemens Leske. She spent the first semester of 2009 in Germany at eh Hochschule für Künste Bremen on an exchange scholarship, studying under Günther Herzfeld and Patrick O’Byrne. Amy recently won the Student Conservatorium Concerto competition, performing a Mozart concerto with the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra. She was also the recipient of the 2007-09 Margaret Henderson scholarship. The Society is keen to encourage

aspiring young musicians and anticipates that this concert will be well attended. Children of school age are admitted free of charge, and local gifted students are encouraged to attend and be inspired. Bega

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. A new retail complex is under construction in the middle of town which will be home to nationally

recognised franchises as well as relocated local businesses when it is completed.

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has tourist information on Tathra and surrounding areas. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants. Tathra is a great base from which

you can explore the Mimosa Rocks National Park, which follows the coast up towards Bermagui. Beaches include Nelsons, Moon Bay, and Bithry Inlet, with camping available at Gillards and Middle Beach.

What to See & Do

Fish off the Tathra Wharf Go bushwalking on the Kangarutha Track or in the Tathra Wildlife Reserve Check out the view and whales from the Headland lookout Enjoy the walk from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka Explore the Bega River by boat

Cobargo Secrets

Bangles Gallery Pottery has been around for thousands of years, both for decorative and functional purposes. The Greeks and the Romans have left a rich heritage of this ancient craft. The word ‘ceramic’ itself comes from the Greek ‘keramikos’ from ‘Keramos’ meaning potter’s clay. Carrying on this age-old craft, and providing a platform for over 15 contemporary Australian Potters, Bangles Gallery, in the heart of Cobargo, offers an extensive selection including both modern and traditional pots for every purpose under the sun. Also featured are locally made leadlight lamps which can be personalized to suit required colours. Feel the sensual curves of shapes crafted by human hands, or watch resident potter, Der, demonstrate his craft. You might just catch the tinkle of finely tuned chimes catching the breeze, or find that special “unique” gift you’ve been searching for. Bangles, Princes Highway, Cobargo. Phone 6493 6421.

Monthly Garden Advice Step Outside‌ Look What You Have With the shortening of daylight hours and the onset of cooler days, more of our time will be spent indoors. Apart from watching the television or reading a good book, we should consider spending a bit of time re-evaluating at the surrounding of the home - the garden. Whether you have lived in your home for many years or only for a short time, a good look at the area outside the four walls might indicate that some work is needed to upgrade this vital part of your property.

This can be achieved by adding some new garden beds, or by replacing some of the old, worn-out plants that have seen the better days. Many a lovely home has been overlooked by a potential buyer because the garden has become overgrown and unsightly, or because the owner has made no attempt to complete the landscape. By spending a small amount of time and effort you can add considerably to the value of your home. Given all of the above, now is the best

time to appraise your garden and to do some planning, or even commence construction of new work you may have considered. The horticultural industry in Australia has come a long way in the last twenty years, and with a proliferation of magazines and lifestyle programs and the tremendous work of plant breeders, we are now more aware of the enormous range of plants that are available. Many plants that we had seen but not considered suitable for the region in which we garden are now available. A visit to your local nursery will give you a whole new outlook on what you can plant in your garden. These interesting plants can add a new dimension to your garden, whether by flower, by leaf shape or by colour. If you are generally happy with your garden design, but have some space for a new rose, shade or fruit tree, now is the time to commence preparation for a new acquisition. Prepare the planting site by digging and adding compost or cow manure in preparation for planting in mid-June.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent

Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leatherwork, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. The famous Tilba Festival is held every Easter, and is a huge community event. Previous Festival have included

Wagonga Inlet, © Paul Callaghan Caption forNarooma photograph © Photographer

Narooma Narooma is one of the most beautiful towns on the coast, set beside the stunning blue waters of the Wagonga Inlet. Non-indigenous settlement started at the head of the Wagonga Inlet when gold was first discovered on Mt Dromedary in the 1860s. Timber was the area's major industry for almost 100 years, providing employment at the various sawmills that grew up around the Inlet. The advent of a coastal steamer service provided an important link between the growing metropolis of Sydney and Narooma and other coastal towns. Visitors soon arrived and a new industry was created, one that's still going strong today - tourism.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au The ocean has long been a cornerstone of life in Narooma, with the commercial fishing, oyster and biggame fishing industries all established in the early part of last century. Today Narooma's distinctive, laid-back coastal style sets it apart from most other towns. There are retail areas spread between the north and south approaches to the town, with Forsters Bay on the inlet specialising in seafood. A trip to Montague Island Nature Reserve and its historic light station, located about 7 kilometres off the coast, is a must. The Island is a nesting place for three species of shearwater, seagulls and crested terns, home to about 10,000 pairs of Little Penguins, and a haul-out site for Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals.

Gastronomic delights at Narooma Oyster Festival MASTERCHEF Julie Goodwin will join a stellar line-up of professional chefs for a celebration of south coast produce, culture and artisans at the Narooma Oyster Festival this May. An ideal combination of fresh and tidal water flows means the four million oysters sold each year out of Narooma are of exceptional quality - the inspiration for three days of feasting and fun from Friday 13 - Sunday 15 May. This year, Julie will be judging the best recipes in a fiercely contested amateur seafood recipe cook-off. Cory Campbell of Melbourne’s Vue de Monde restaurant will put the chefs through their paces in the professional category of the competition. Cooking demonstrations will feature Julian Lloyd, head chef of Rick Stein at

Bannisters, and a team from the threehat-winning Vue de Monde. The festival gives focus to the south coast’s Aboriginal culture with an opening Welcome to Country on Friday evening, followed by fireworks. Numerous waterside food and wine stalls will serve delicious fare all weekend and there will be cheese, wine and boutique beer tastings and a vast oyster bar serving freshly-shucked oysters alongside a selection of chilled whites. With live music, floating sculptures, exhibitions, bungy trampolining, boat tours and a big selection of children’s amusements, the weekend’s daytime line-up is extensive. At night there’s a chance to party at Saturday’s glittering Oyster Ball at the Narooma Golf Club, with a sumptuous

festival menu and live band. For more information visit our website www.narooma.org.au/oysterfestival

Spend an hour, a day or more walking in the National Parks and reserves of the Region. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. Ask at a NPWS office or local tourist information centre about others. Please note that for all these walks, strong footwear should be worn, carry food and water, and take clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

Fishing Report & Tide Chart - May May along the South Coast sees some great fishing available. Whether you're fishing the rocks, beaches, estuaries or offshore, an array of species will be on offer using a variety of different methods. Good luck! Beaches: Fishing the late afternoons on a rising tide can pay huge dividends during May, with bream, salmon, mullet, tailor and possibly mulloway all on the cards. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutter to the northern end for best results. Fresh squid, pilchards, bluebait and pipi are ideal, but using live beach worms for bait is certainly the best. Both surf poppers and chromed lures will also work for salmon. Better beaches to try are Tura, Gillards, Camel, Tilba, Brou and Barlings. Rocks: The pelagic action will be in full swing with salmon, tailor, kingfish and bonito all available. Anglers throwing chromed sliced lures up to 60grams, whole pilchards rigged on ganged hooks and live bait will have a great time. Almost any deeper headland should produce but some of the better ledges are Tura Head, Tathra Wharf, Mystery Bay and the Golf course rocks at Narooma. Drummer, blackfish and bream will make the suds home and should also be readily available. Estuaries: Most estuaries along the coast will continue to fish well for most species. Flathead, whiting, bream,

tailor and mulloway will all be available with soft plastics, live baiting and fresh baits the best way to tempt the fish. Concentrate your efforts around tide changes with early mornings a great time to fish the estuary. Using burley in conjunction with fresh baits should see some tasty fillets in the pan. After the recent rains, better estuaries to try include Merimbula Lake, Wallaga Lake, Narooma and Tuross. Offshore: With the water hovering around the 19-20deg mark, yellowfin tuna and albacore will be patrolling the current lines. Depending on bait activity will determine where the fish are, but trolling lures from the 40-fathom line to the shelf is a good starting point. Inshore, snapper, kingfish, morwong, flathead and john dory should keep the bottom-bouncing brigade happy. Almost all reefs will be holding fish with fresh squid, striped tuna fillets and pilchards being the best baits. There should be a few kingfish around, with Montague Island being the hotspot. Tight lines till next month. Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures, and provides guided fishing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Great Lookouts in the Eurobodalla HOLMES LOOKOUT You'll find this lookout only 5 minutes from Batemans Bay. It offers spectacular views of Batemans Bay and the Clyde River including the Bridge and Estuary. The lookout also offers

superb views northwest to the rugged Budawang Range and north to Pigeon House Mountain. Continue along this road for 2.7km until your reach Rotary Drive on your left and you will see a signpost for “Holmes Lookout”. There are Picnic tables and BBQs at the lookout. BIG BIT LOOKOUT This lookout is located in the north end of the shire. Take the Princes Hwy north from Batemans Bay. The turn off for the lookout is approx. 14 km from Batemans Bay on Big Bit Road (or about 5 minutes past the Benandarah service station). The road is unsealed but in good condition. will reach the lookout where you can enjoy 360° views of the surrounding area including Durras Lake. You can continue along this road back to the Highway but as the going is quite steep you may prefer to head back the way you came in. BURREWARRA POINT LOOKOUT, GUERILLA BAY From the Visitors Centre follow Beach Road towards Batehaven and continue south through the suburbs of Batehaven, Surfbeach, Lilli Pilli, Malua Bay and Rosedale. The turn-off to Guerilla Bay is 18.2 km from Batemans Bay and is well signposted. Turn left into Burri Point Road and follow this road to the very end where you will find a small car park. (Ensure you stay on Burri Point Road and don’t take the left turn into Beach Parade – save this area to explore after your walk.) From the car park proceed on foot out to the lighthouse lookout. This 15 to 20 minute walk is easy and takes you through Banksia and heath vegetation. The views up and down the coast are breathtaking and offer great photo opportunities. Keep a watchful eye open for dolphins (at any time) and whales (in season, mid September to end October). Guerilla Bay beach is one of the most picturesque spots in the shire.
