March Welcome to 2012 on the Far South Coast. Here's hoping autumn is fairly mild and the water stays warm, because there certainly wasn't a lot of hot weather during summer! Never mind - there are plenty of things to do on the Far South Coast apart from spending a day at the beach. In fact March is one of the busiest months, with events happening right up and down the coast. Our What's On page has all the details - there are too many things to mention here. It seems like there's something on every day in Bermagui, with the 15th Annual Bermagui Seaside Fair, Sculpture on the Edge as well as a Motorbike Show raising funds for cancer research and to support cancer sufferers and their families. Details are on pages 26 -28. The Merimbula Rock 'n' Rodders Festival is on again too with plenty of music, dancing and cars straight from

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

A new photographic exhibition at the Museum shows maritime archaeologists at work on two rewarding expeditions off the Queensland coast two years ago. In partnership with the Silentworld Foundation, Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) divers found the remains of HM Colonial Schooner Mermaid on the Great Barrier Reef in January 2009 and investigated other wreck sites on Wreck Reefs in the Coral Sea in December. This ANMM travelling exhibition, titled Wrecks, reef and the Mermaid, includes stunning underwater photographs and a short video, all by Xanthe Rivett, of the dive team in action and their coralencrusted finds. The 21.4 metre (70-foot) Mermaid ran aground off the Frankland Islands, some 40 km south-east of Cairns, in 1829. Attempting a short-cut through the Great Barrier Reef and ignoring advice from more experienced officers aboard, the captain ran the schooner on to an unidentified reef where it became a total wreck. Mermaid was a well-known vessel in Australian waters at that time, having previously served Captain Phillip Parker King in his surveys of the Australian coast between 1818 – 1820. In December 2009 the ANMM/ Silentworld team headed 450 km offshore to Wreck Reefs in the Coral Sea, where divers took just 4 days to locate and survey the remains of two vessels closely associated with Matthew Flinders. HMS Porpoise, a 10-gun Royal Navy sloop, commanded by Lieutenant Robert Fowler with Flinders on board as a passenger, was travelling in convoy through the relatively unexplored waters of the Coral Sea when it struck an isolated and unchartered reef. Porpoise immediately fired a cannon to warn two following vessels – Cato, an armed cargo ship, and Bridgewater, an East India Company cargo ship. Cato and Bridgewater both changed course, but towards each other. When
Captain Park on Cato realised what was happening, he ordered his ship off the wind to avoid collision, but Cato too struck the reef, just two cable lengths (370 metres) from Porpoise. Bridgewater ignominiously continued on its way to India, with no heed for the plight of the men on the other two ships. The ANMM/Silentworld expedition carried out extensive surveys of the wreck sites at Porpoise Cay to pinpoint the archaeological remains of these historically important vessels. Silentworld Foundation is a not-forprofit organisation established to further maritime archaeological research and to expand knowledge of Australia’s early

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent
swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Back to the Old Selection - an Oz classic The characters from Steele Rudd’s stories of life on the Darling Downs in the 1880s come to life once more in Footprint Theatre’s production of “Back to the Old Selection”. Things are dire for the Rudd family; the drought is biting and the bills are mounting up. Will Dad find a way of paying the bills? Will the bear industry save their bacon? Will Sarah find true love? Will Joe ever learn? Will the mystery of the Rudd’s guest be solved? All these questions and more will be answered in the next production for Footprint Theatre. The play, written by Steele Rudd but never performed in his lifetime,
has been adapted by Richard Fotheringham and is directed by Lis Shelley. The cast is drawn from across the shire with actors hailing from as far south as Wonboyn to Bega in the north. Musical direction is by Christina Mimmocchi of Sydney who is well known in folk music circles as a singer, researcher and musical director. The production will premiere at the 2012 Cobargo Folk Festival on the 25th February for one afternoon only, with performances at the Pambula Town Hall on Saturday March 3rd and at the Candelo Town Hall on Saturday 10th March. Merimbula Celebrates its Centenary with 10 days of events On March 27th this year Merimbula celebrates the 100th anniversary of its gazettal as a Township. The gazettal was a cause for celebration, as even though the area had been actively occupied by a number of families for a time previously, Merimbula was at last properly recognised as a Town. A wide range of events have been planed to celebrate Merimbula's 100th birthday - here's a sample of some of the things happening over late March and April.
Tuesday 27th March 12.30pm The Celebrations will be launched with a luncheon at Club Sapphire, Merimbula, at which former Australian Test Cricketer and educator, Paul Sheahan (courtesy of Rex Airlines), will be guest speaker. Paul will officially start the celebrations. His address will be followed by the launch by local identity Chappie Munn of a Pictorial History that has been commissioned by the Merimbula– Imlay Historical Society. A birthday cake will be cut by the oldest living Merimbula born resident Mary (Posey) Gray. The Launch will also feature a choir of 100 voices singing the Centenary Anthem.
Friday 30th March Friday night The Merimbula Special Events Committee will host a Centenary Ball at the Merimbula RSL Club. Music will be provided by the Royal Military College Duntroon Big Band, one of the nation’s best known group of musicians. Tickets for the Ball can be purchased at the RSL.

Morning Dick Smith will fly to Merimbula to take part in the burial of a Time Capsule in the Museum grounds, prepared by students at Lumen Christi College 12.30pm Luncheon at the RSL Club, featuring guest speaker Dick Smith. With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters,
and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. A mecca for mountain bike enthusiasts, the Tathra area has some of the best single tracks on the east coast. This year the Tathra Enduro is on April 21 - 22, with mountain bike races to suit all ages and abilities. Held for the first time in 2011, the Tathra Enduro is a collaboration between not for profit organisations the Tathra Mountain Bike

Explore with Brogo Wilderness Canoes Early summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warming up and large numbers of visitors are still to arrive. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. Bush walking in the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy black-cockatoos (below left), listed

as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds, frogs and water dragons. Continue through the Reserve until
you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.
A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. The new Sapphire Marketplace complex has opened after a 15 month construction phase, bringing nationally
recognised retail outlets to Bega. Housing the largest Big W outside of Sydney, the complex represents a huge change to Bega's retail landscape.

Step back in time at the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre and the Bega Pioneers Museum William Tarlinton and the Imlay Brothers were amongst the first Europeans to settle in the Bega Valley region around 1829, but members of the Yuin Monaro tribal group had been inhabiting the area for thousands of years prior to this. The beef and dairying industries were established in the 1840s, and still remain significant contributors to the Valley's economy. Bega Cheese has played a huge role in the development of the dairy industry in Bega, and people from around Australia and the world come to visit
the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre and learn about the history of dairying in the Valley. The Heritage Centre is also the perfect place to sample the different styles of Bega Cheese, as well as a variety of other Australian cheeses. The coffee shop has a great range of milkshakes, icecreams and a large selection of homemade cakes to keep the rumbling tummies at bay. The Bega Visitor Information Centre is also located at the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre, and the friendly volunteers will be happy to answer
questions about the region. The Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is open 9am - 5pm daily, and from 11am on Anzac Day ( the Centre is closed on Christmas Day and Good Friday). The Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is located in Lagoon St, Bega; head north over the Bega River and turn right at the roundabout.

Thornleigh on Newtown Café open Bega's newest edition to the food scene is the Thornleigh on Newtown Cafe, housed in the beautifully restored historic Bismarck House. Local chef Steve Jackson is making the most of Bega's regional, seasonal produce, creating a menu based on rustic comfort food. Several components of dishes are made in-house, including traditional curries, sausages, slow braises, pickles and baked goods. Steve's farm to table approach creates dishes that are full of real flavour simple, healthy and honest food. Sculpture on the Edge @ Bermi 2012 sees the sixth annual Sculpture on the Edge at Bermagui, with an exhibition of large sculptures on the spectacular Endeavour Point Headland, on Horseshoe Bay Beach and in Dickinson Park. Small sculptures will be on show in the Bermagui Community Centre. Sculpture on the Edge, running from March 2nd - 11th, will begin and end with fire sculptures by two local artists. On the final evening of the 11th, there will be a community picnic amongst the sculptures, when the People's Choice awards will be announced. A public Symposium titled"Let's hear it for the girls!" is on Sunday March 4th at the White House in Montague St. Other associated events will be an exhibition at Shop 8 in the Fishermen's Wharf complex and an Open Garden at architect Philip Cox's Murrah property 'Thubbul' on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th March. Sculpture on the Edge attracts both established and emerging artists, and is visited by about 7,000 enthusiasts. This free event makes sculpture accessible to a wide audience, and it has had its share of controversies, making it all the more interesting. Previous exhibitors have participated in Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney, Cottesloe and Denmark and the Busan Biennale in Korea. The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a virtually intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This however provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the full Montreal story; a story of an unsolved mystery, history and fascinating anecdotes. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors to wander through the
beautiful forest and tree ferns. The track itself is approximately 200m long and most is wheel chair accessible, and there are plenty of strategically located benches along the track. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm and take around 1 ¼ hours, and toilet facilities are available. If you have a group of more than 12, contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. Admission is $5pp. When visiting the Bermagui Seaside Fair, take a tour of the Goldfield at 2.00pm before you venture home.
Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source
of income for the area. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located
on Central Tilba’s main street. The village of Tilba Tilba, just two kilometers down the road from Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The Dromedary Hotel If you’re spending time in Central Tilba, drop in to the Dromedary Hotel and “have a cold one” in the historic atmosphere of an original country pub. Monthly Garden Advice Marching on Autumn has arrived, and what a special time in the garden this season is. We should all be well and truly on our way to setting up our Autumn, Winter and early Spring flower and vegetable gardens. Gardeners along the coastal zone need to be aware that although the flowers and vegetables might still have some life in them, they might need to pull them out a bit early so the new plants can go in before it becomes too late in the season. In the flower garden, preparation for the new seedlings involves digging over the beds and adding some weed-free cow manure to encourage the new root development of the young seedlings. Then it's off to the local nursery for your selection of pansy, viola, primula, stocks, poppies, wallflowers and stocks just to name a few. All these varieties have many different
forms from the exciting colours, many of them new this season, to the different heights that each particular plant can reach. In designing the flower bed, consideration should be given to the location of the bed relevant to the overall layout of the garden. Keep in mind that as Winter arrives, the sun is usually lower in the sky, and some gardens can remain shaded for a longer time throughout the day. Flowers and vegetables require at least six hours of direct sunlight a day to grow and produce quality fruit and flowers, so shade can be a problem.. Plants also create shade themselves, so careful consideration should be given to placing the taller varieties at the rear or less shady section of the flower bed. At planting time, use a seaweed/
fish emulsion fertiliser to water in the seedlings. This will reduce the instance of transplant shock and get the young plants off to a great start. Similarly, in the vegetable garden planting should be well under way. With the same treatment as for the flower beds, planting of cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, carrots, beetroot and many others can now begin. If you haven't any room, or live in a unit or the like, all these plants can be planted in pots, troughs etc. but use a premium potting mix to plant with. As for all potted plants, the fertiliser requirement is greater in a pot than in the ground. A weekly application of a liquid fertiliser will encourage more fruiting and flowering.

Moruya The township of Moruya has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and Moruya will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Bridge this year. South East Harvest Festival - ABC's Costa comes to Moruya In partnership with the Sustaining Our Towns project, the Southeast HARVEST is very excited that Australia’s favourite gardening personality, Costa Georgiadis will venture south to the HARVEST on the weekend of 16,17 and 18 March. When approached by the Sustaining Our Towns project to visit the festival, Costa responded with his trademark effervescence. “I had no idea that there are so many exciting things going on around there. I knew I just had to come down and see for myself all the gardens and farms and community projects that were described. I want to lift the lid on the Eurobodalla!” enthused Costa. Over three days, Costa will visit a school garden, a number of sustainable gardens and a small scale polyculture farm and market garden at Turlinjah. He will spend the day at the HARVEST on the Saturday and take part in a cooking demonstration using freshly harvested produce from The SAGE

Finally, Costa will join a garden blitz at The SAGE Project site on the Sunday morning and if he can squeeze it into the packed schedule, he will install a no-dig garden at the Boomerang Meeting Place in Mogo before heading back to Sydney. Costa’s philosophy and practice is all about how we can tread lightly and embrace nature’s cycles and seasons. He encourages us to investigate and champion our local produce from its source, which is exactly the mission of the Southeast HARVEST. “We’re just so excited that Costa wanted to come to the HARVEST festival” said President Carole Carlson. “He’s such an energetic personality and people can’t help but respond to his infectious passion for growing food locally and sustainably. It’s the perfect combination.” The HARVEST is held every 16 months to enable growers and guest demonstrators to showcase produce
from each season. This year’s festival on Saturday 17 March will be a celebration of Autumn, the season that many believe is the best time of year for this region. A huge array of interactive stalls are planned, featuring local produce and locally made delicacies, as well as displays promoting more sustainable living and activities for children of all ages. Limited event merchandise will be given away to early birds and a fantastic prize will be drawn every hour for a lucky ticket holder to win. Entry to the HARVEST is only $5 (16 years and over) or $10 for a family ticket (2 adults and up to 2 children 16 or over). Children under 16 are free. Tickets include access to the full program of events in the main marquee, including demonstrations from special guest presenters Jackie French and Julie Goodwin. Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820's, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past two hundred years. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Mallacoota – Heart of the Coastal Wilderness Mallacoota is one of Gippsland’s great escapes, surrounded by the magnificent wilderness of the Croajingolong National Park and set on the beautiful Mallacoota Inlet. Unwind at this pretty coastal town, blessed with Victoria's warmest winter temperatures and cool ocean breezes in summer. Water is in abundance in this region, so activities including surfing, fishing, swimming, sailing and boating are ideal in the many inlets, lakes and rivers around the town. Undoubtedly one of Australia's most spectacular parks, Croajingolong encompasses 100 kilometres of coast and hinterland and features an extraordinary diversity of landscapes from pure white sandy beaches, rocky coastal headlands and granite peaks to rambling heathland, lush
rainforests and towering eucalypts. It also supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, with more than 1000 native plants and over 300 bird species. Accommodation in Mallacoota is diverse and caters for couples, families and groups with four and five star outlets available in Gipsy Point, a beautiful peninsula jutting into the top lake of the Mallacoota Inlet, home to a large mob of kangaroos. If you are towing a van, camping or driving in an RV, the Foreshore Holiday Park is not to be missed. The park is situated right on the lakeshore within easy walking distance of the town centre and provides a number of sites with access to private moorings right on the lake.
