Winter is a great time for exploring, with cooler days perfect for outdoor activities, although swimming might be off the agenda! Whether it's long walks on the beach, enjoying a hike in a National Park or pedalling along a cycle track, there are a myriad of options to choose from on the Far South Coast. You can take a tour of the Montreal Goldfield - it's open daily at 2pm, and provides a fascinating glimpse into an important part of Bermagui's history. Of course exploring can always occur indoors as well as out, with loads of funky shops and galleries to check out from Eden to Batemans Bay. At the end of July is a big event for lovers of musicals - the world premiere of Prix D'Amour by Spectrum Theatre Group. Based on the novel 'Rose' by

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay.- the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

Blue Whales on the Brink at the Eden Killer Whale Museum Blue Whales are the largest animals on our planet. They can weigh about the same as 40 elephants and are as long as around three school buses. Their heart alone is around the size of a small car. Due to their low numbers and the size of the ocean, mysteries remain of the nature of this swift and powerful creature. Blue Whales are considered Endangered, meaning there is a very high risk of their extinction in the wild. Prior to the invention of the exploding harpoon gun and steamdriven vessels, Blue Whale numbers in Antarctica were over 230,000. Their swiftness and power were too great for the oared whaleboats. Technological

changes in whaling tools and vessels soon changed this, and recent surveys estimate the population now around only 2,000 in Antarctica. Blue Whales on the Brink explores the technological advances in whaling that resulted in the dramatic decline of the Blue’s populations around the world, and the international recognition in 1966 of the need of conservation of whale species. Blue Whales featured in Eden’s history in 1908 when a mother and calf were cornered and herded by Killer Whales into the Bay and finally harpooned by Archer James Davidson near Davidson Whaling Station. The mother was the largest whale to be harpooned

by hand at the time, measuring 97 feet long (29.5 metres). This made the Guinness Book of World Records in 1984. A detailed account of the hunt featured in a Sydney newspaper and is both an intriguing and disturbing account to read. Though an uncommon sight, Blue Whales have been seen returning to the Bay on occasion. Blue Whales on the Brink features stunning documentary footage of Blue Whale populations off the South and West Australian coasts. Explore what we do and don’t know about Blue Whales, reflect on historical and contemporary human activity affecting populations and the role we can play in the conservation of these majestic creatures. Men of Timber Exhibition explores Eden's timber history The Men of Timber exhibition explores the dangerous aspects of occupations associated with the timber industry as well as the historical aspects of living and working conditions. The exhibition also highlights the commitment of the National Timber Workers’ Memorial committee to bring to Eden a place of national commemoration for fallen Australian timber workers. The timber industry in Australia extends as far back as to the settlement of the colony in 1788. Timber was cleared from the land to fulfil the need to build shelter and furniture, provide fuel for cooking and for transport requirements such as building ships and carts. Red cedar was the first export of the colony of New South Wales and cedar

getters existed until the end of the industry in 1910. One of the earliest known exports of timber from Eden occurred in 1843 when the ship St Heliers left the wharf with a load of wattle bark and other goods bound for London. The first rail service in NSW opened on 26 September 1855. With the increasing use of railways across the country the demand for railway sleepers saw the emergence of a steady sleeper cutter industry. By 1907 there were 50 sleeper cutters producing sleepers made of Woollybutt, Blackbutt and Grey box.

The last sleeper shipment from Eden was the Lantao which departed on 28 October 1961 bound for Pakistan. Eden was the first Australian town to begin exporting woodchips. This began in 1968 when the state government entered into a 20 year agreement with Harris Daishowa (Aust) Pty Ltd for the sale of woodchips from the Crown’s forests. By 1969 the chipping plant built on the shore across the bay from the town of Eden was operational. The first woodchip shipment took place in January 1971. Fishing Report & Tide Chart - July Well, winter is well and truly upon us with the winter woollies needed to keep us warm, but don’t let the cold deter you, as some exceptional fishing still exists for those willing to put in the effort. Beaches: With the cooler water that winter brings, salmon are the main species targeted along the South Coast. Fish to 3kg are common with some bigger models up to 5kg on the cards. Using paternoster rigs with bait and surf poppers is the preferred method, but anglers casting chrome lures into the suds should also get a fish or two. Better baits to try are blue bait, whitebait and cut pilchard cubes. Almost any beach with a decent gutter will hold fish but the better ones would be North Tura, Gillards, Cuttagee, Camel, Tilba, Brou and Black fellows beach. Gummy sharks are also possible on moonlit nights on a flooding tide; fresh salmon fillets being the preferred bait to use. Rocks: Great time of the year to target both blackfish and drummer. Lightly weighted baits like cunjevoi, crab and prawns perfect for drummer. Fresh cabbage weed used with burley is ideal for blackfish, but only use the burley sparsely. Salmon can also be expected on the outer edges of wash zones along most rocky headlands. Using whole pilchards rigged on gang hooks or metal lures is the best way to target them. Tailor numbers will be on the increase also with green backs to 3kg possible. Better spots to try are Tathra wharf, Tura Head, Mystery Bay, Moruya Breakwall and Pretty Point. Estuaries: Usually a little quieter this month but trevally, bream, blackfish and tailor should all have a chew at times. Fresh striped tuna, prawns and live bass yabbies are great baits for the bread and butter

species. Tailor will respond well to trolling, with casting lures at surface-feeding fish also paying dividends. Watch out for the working birds, they're a dead give away as to where the tailor are feeding. Those casting soft plastics should concentrate on the lower sections or channels with stikbait style presentations the go. Squidgie Flikbaits would be the top of the list in natural colours. Better estuaries to try are Pambula, Bega River, Narooma, Tuross and Batemans Bay. Offshore: Snapper should be in close this month feeding on cuttlefish. Fish the inshore reefs from 15-30m for best results. Best baits are cuttlefish, squid, pilchards; with soft plastics catching their fair share too. Expect morwong, leatherjackets, John Dory and trevally to make up the rest of the bag. If fishing the deeper reefs or wide off the shelf (100 fathoms plus) tassie trumpeter, blue-eye trevella and gemfish can be expected. Water temperature will be hovering around 15 - 16 degrees cold! Almost all reefs will be holding fish but better ones are Long Reef, 4 and 6 miles, Brou and the reefs off Potato Point and Tuross. If targeting the pelagics, Southern Bluefin tuna will be caught wide of the shelf and anywhere up to 50 miles out. A lot will depend on prevailing conditions like water temperature, bait activity and current. Good luck if venturing wide! Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former racecourse. This fantastic community project has seen hundreds of trees, shrubs and grasses planted, with the aim of recreating much of the wetland's original habitat. There's been plenty of construction too, with interpretive signs, walking and cycling tracks, picnic areas and bird hides. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River

and Ben Boyd National Park. There is an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth. There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms. Pambula Lake is just south where there’s a boat ramp and oyster growers selling fresh Pambula Lake oysters.

Spend an hour, a day or more walking in the National Parks and reserves of the Region. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. Ask at a NPWS office or local tourist information centre about others. Please note that for all these walks, strong footwear should be worn, carry food and water, and take clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

1. The Big Hole/Marble Arch Deua National Park 4km return Approx. 1.5 hours Big Hole 13km return Approx. 5.5 hours Marble Arch

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This easy walk begins from the Cascades Camping Area off Badja Forest Road near Countegany, east of Cooma. Follow the track through granite outcrops and forest rich with arboreal mammals to a viewing platform overlooking Tuross Falls and the spectacular gorge.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Camping is available along the way or stay in comfort in the renovated Green Cape Lightkeepers Cottages. Park use fees apply.

Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, Allocasuarina paludosa, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

There are a range of activities and attractions in Merimbula, including deep-sea fishing, whale-watching, snorkelling, surfing, cycling, scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are still visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early history.

Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time these holidays. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It

provides a secure site for displays of local history such as stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; • the Wharf and the Illawarra Steam ship Company that provided trans port for people and goods up and down the coast before roads were built; • Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; • gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula;

Rose Porteous-Hancock will return to the limelight as the central character in a new musical Prix D’Amour when Spectrum Theatre Group presents the world premiere this August. Written and composed by Paul Dion of Merimbula, Prix D’Amour (The Price of Love) is based on the book ‘Rose’ by Robert Wainwright and tells the colourful story of Australian mining magnate, Lang Hancock, the woman he married, Rose Lacson of the Philippines and the emotional and financial roller coaster ride they took together. Sitting in her uncle Taboy’s bar in Manila, Rose tells her friend that she is going to catch a “big fish” in Australia. Even Rose could not have imagined how big that fish would be. The story tells of Rose’s escape from the poverty of Manila, her arrival in Perth, Western Australia on a three month visitor’s visa and how she lands herself a job as a housekeeper for one of Australia’s wealthiest men, newly widowed and ageing mining magnate, Lang Hancock. Their subsequent marriage creates friction and his lavish spending on her threatens the business. Rose’s meteoric rise from poverty to money, property and a colourful lifestyle eventually lands everyone in court.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting some $50m of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for anyone new to the region; the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre,

Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has tourist information on Tathra and surrounding areas. Every January, the Tathra Wharf to Waves Beach Swim is held to raise funds for various community groups. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale. Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.. Take a stroll around the town and experience the delightful ambience of yesteryear. Take your pick from an array of art and craft, rare gems and jewelry, pottery, woodwork & leatherwork, or hunt among the collectables, curios and old wares on offer. Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

BTP perform Broadway play The Women Spend an evening with this viciously entertaining group of women and you may discover that while times have changed, people haven’t. The Women is set in the sophisticated setting of New York high society in the 1930s, an era in which it was assumed that a woman's only real satisfaction was marriage to a successful man, and it powerfully reflects the attitudes of the day. Mary Haines’ society girlfriends know a secret about her husband, and between the beauty parlours, the department stores, the hours in psychoanalysis and the dinner parties, something’s sure to slip. The play is as much drama as comedy, moving at a fast clip and taking pot shots at virtually every female stereotype imaginable.

The Women is wickedly funny, but it is also a surprisingly effective argument for feminism in its portrayal of a distinctly anti-feminist society. The Women ran for more than 600 performances on Broadway and has been made into three Hollywood movies. It has also been performed frequently in many countries around the world. Clare Boothe Luce’s dishy, decadent classic comes to life in this stunning large-scale production by the Bay Theatre Players. Directed by Val Mitchelmore, The Women has an all-female cast of 23 actors. Many have years of performing experience, including members of the Bay Theatre Players Youth Theatre Group, but there are also some new faces to live theatre. The Women, viciously entertaining, and all about MEN! The Women is being performed at The Bay Playhouse, 33 Gregory St in Batemans Bay.
