From The Editor Welcome to the July/August edition of the Far South Coast iMag. It's still lovely and green on the coast - we're very lucky to be a tiny part of NSW that's not still in drought. Winter is such great time of year to visit our beautiful region; the days are often clear and sunny, and the beaches are empty - perfect for long walks. On days that aren't so spectacular, there are great galleries all along the coast and inland towns, as well as cafes and fantastic shops to check out. This July sees the Batemans Bay Antique and Collectibles Fair back for the fifth consecutive year. Buy, sell or swap treasured pieces, or get a valuation on a family heirloom. See more on page 45. Four Winds and the Sydney International Piano Competition are presenting US pianist, Kenny Broberg in recital on August 17th. In demand around the world for his sublime playing. You'll find all the details on page 33. The fabulous Sculpture for Clyde returns at Willinga Park in Bawley Point and in Clyde St Batemans Bay. This nineday art festival celebrates imagination in 3D, with large sculptures joining Willinga Park's own permanent collection, set in spectacular botanic gardens. Small sculptures are on display in the heart of Batemans Bay. Head over to pages 46 - 47 for more information. Our What's On pages (40 - 41) have all the information you need to get the best out of your time in our region. Keep your iMag handy, download it from our website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au or from our Facebook page - Far South Coast iMag, and enjoy!

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

6

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafÊs, restaurants, retailers,

12

pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue. Follow the river inland around the corner from the playground area until you find the walking track. This track has viewing platforms that offer beautiful views of the cliffs on the opposite bank and the beautiful clear water below. Panboola is located at the southern end of Pambula, and is a wonderful example of a community-led environmental restoration project. With hundreds of native trees, shrubs etc. planted, Panboola has transformed grazing paddocks into a thriving wetland area, with several walking tracks to explore. It's currently home to thousands of flying foxes who are visiting from Bega to feed on local flowering eucalypts. Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, at the opposite end of the lake/river system. Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshlyshucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

VISITOR INFORMATION Beach Street, Merimbula Ph: 02 6495 1129

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human MAHDNYwith W Aboriginal people making the occupation, most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

26

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Sally Wilson Art sells fine art, individually-crafted bracelets as well as whimsical merchandise like cards, mugs, tea towels, hand-made bags and more.

Develop your practice at Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast More and more people are making the trip to Cobargo to attend hot yoga classes at Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast, the little studio behind the red door. Studio owner Amrei Marden has more than 20 years experience in yoga practice and teaching, and people of all ages attend her classes to improve flexibility, balance, strength and overall fitness. “The beginner’s course is suitable for all ages and all bodies,” Amrei said. “Some are initially intimidated by the thought of the heat but it’s just like doing yoga on a warm summer’s day in Australia. People acclimatise quickly and then they start to enjoy the warmth.” A community of friendly regulars has built up around the studio, which has daily classes. Several students travel regularly from Narooma and Bega. “A number of students train several times a week, others less often – it’s an individual choice,” said Amrei. “Students say that yoga helps them to manage blood pressure, arthritis, depression and anxiety. “It’s great to see that more men are finding this yoga helpful. Many have hard, physical jobs and use the yoga to recover from work injuries, ease pain and help relaxation. There’s value in it for everyone.”

Amrei also runs weekend yoga retreats, which are popular with those who want to add yoga to their holiday plans. Amrei Marden, Amreimarden@gmail.com Bikram Yoga Sapphire Coast, 0416 092 225 www.bikramyogasapphirecoast.com.au

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Today, the Wharf is a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground

28

located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, with gourmet delis, cafĂŠs and restaurants. Tathra Beach Tapas is located right on the sand next to the Surf Club, and features local produce and seafood, great coffee, cake, snacks and is fully licensed. The Tathra Beach Country Club's Golden Sands Chinese restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday. On The Perch Bird Park at Kalaru is short drive from Tathra, and is an experience you won't want to miss. You can enjoy a great coffee at the Brood Cafe at the bird park in very peaceful surroundings listening to the birds, and there's no park entry payable if you are visiting the cafe only.

Take a walk along the scenic Kangarutha Track If you’re keen to do some bush-walking, try the 9km Kangarutha Track, along the spectacular northern shores of Bournda National Park. You can begin at the northern end of the track at Kianinny Bay near Tathra, or at the Wallagoot Lake Boat Club at the southern end. The track takes in the rugged coastline, with many small sandy or pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs, but not many options for swimming. If the full 9km, 5 hour walk is too hard, you can tackle a section, for example, a 1.7km walk from Kianinny Bay to Boulder Bay, or a 1.8km walk from Wallagoot Lake Boat Club to Turingal Head, or walk half way to White Rock Quarry. Another option is Turingal Head to Games Bay, where the track passes through a secluded old dairy farm area; this 5km return walk is rated as medium, and takes 2 hours. CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Explore the fascinating shops Visit the historic ABC Cheese Factory Drop in and explore Gulaga Gallery Try fishing at Mystery Bay

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. 34

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Reva at Tilba has divine jewellery from Australia and around the world, and Gulaga Gallery has hemp and bamboo clothing.

Find Tilba Real Dairy at the ABC Cheese Factory The ABC Cheese Factory is located in the heart of historical Central Tilba and is the manufacturing base of Tilba Real Dairy. The ABC Cheese Factory was established in 1891 and was the first Cheese Co-op in NSW. Today the ABC Cheese Factory is owned by local dairy farmers Erica and Nic Dibden who bottle their unhomogenised milk on-site and make cheese., cream and yoghurt. At the 2018 Sydney Royal, Tilba Real Dairy products were awarded a Gold Medal for their Full Cream Milk, Haloumi and Double Cream, a Silver Medal for their Low Fat Milk, Mountain Ash cheese, a Bronze for their Persian Fetta and they were awarded Grand Champion Double Cream - a very impressive achievement. Real Tilba Dairy products can be purchased at the ABC Cheese Factory or at many retail outlets across the South Coast of NSW. Come and watch cheese being made, milk being bottled or come and sample some of their delicious products. C

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

hunting and negotiating. Entry is $5 per adult, $12 per family, with accompanied children under 12 are free. On Saturday the Fair is open from 9am to 4.30pm, and on Sunday, 9am to 2pm. The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the 1850s gold rush theme park Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous awards at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards including the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

Sculpture for Clyde - imagination in 3D Now in its third year, Sculpture For Clyde is a nine-day art festival celebrating imagination in 3D. The outdoor sculptures will be on show at Willinga Park in Bawley Point, plus there will be an indoor exhibition at 5 Clyde Street in Batemans Bay. The festival showcases works from professional, emerging and novice artists. The 2019 exhibitions will not disappoint, with over 100 entries, including some from international sculptors. The winner of the Acquisitive Award will contribute to the future artistic landscape of Batemans Bay and be positioned on the foreshore. This permanent sculpture walk is the real driver behind the event, with the aim to create an outdoor art gallery open every day and night of the year for locals and visitors to the South Coast. 2018’s Sculpture for Clyde event, and the incredible generosity of the local community, enabled the acquisition of 3 public works sculptures to be positioned in Batemans Bay. Now proudly displayed are two works by

Jesse Graham, the much celebrated octopus, “Buoyansea”, and the very popular “Pelicant”. These have recently been joined by the 2018 winning entry by Haruyuki Uchida titled, “Dance”, and “Portal” by John Fitzmaurice. “Pelicant”, and “Portal” were purchased through a crowd funding campaign supported by the wonderful local community.
