Summer fun on the Far South Coast

From the Editor

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

January Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - where else in the world would you want to be this summer? There are always plenty of things to do on the coast, but January always has those extra-special events, and this year it's no different. It all kicks off with Merimbula's New Year's Eve celebrations, with markets, live entertainment, rides for the kids and most importantly, fireworks. Go to page 14 to find out more. There's a fantastic outdoor production for all the family in Pambula - Footprint Theatre is presenting Ferdinand the Bull, a story about being true to yourself. With flamenco dancers and live music by Guitarama, it promises to be great fun. Details are on page 9. The Tathra community are celebrating 10 years of the Wharf to Waves Weekend, where participants have fun and raise money for local community groups at the same time. There's more information on page 27.

Contents Speaking of fundraising, once again Sapphire Rock is bringing out the big guns to drum up some cash for the Sapphire Aquatic Centre - Jimmy Barnes is coming to Merimbula's Magic Mountain for Australia Day. There are a limited number of tickets, so read more on page 13 to make sure you don't miss out. Barnsey's not the only one coming to the coast to play a gig - Grinspoon, You Am I and a heap of other musos are visiting this January - check out our Live Music guide on page 38. Plus there's the NPWS Discovery Program, art exhibitions, activities for young and old - too much to mention here; just keep reading! Don't forget the ban on smoking at a range of outdoor public locations - see page 2 for the fine print. We hope you have a truly memorable holiday this January.

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

2

century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shorebased whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay - the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

A new photographic display at the Eden Killer Whale Museum will show how pets have been cherished on board ships as loyal travelling companions on many sea voyages. Little Shipmates: seafaring pets, an Australian National Maritime Museum travelling exhibition, features 22 photographs from the museum’s Sam Hood Collection. The images capture how much pets meant to many seafarers in a life where they were often far from their families for long periods of time. Photographs of cats, dogs, monkeys and birds on board ships clearly show their owners attachment. Sydney photographer Sam Hood took hundreds of photographs of crew members between 1900 and the 1950s as souvenirs for their visit or to send home to families. One photograph on display shows an English ship’s officer with his pet monkey, evidence of the many exotic ports seafarers visited during their voyages. Others show how cats and dogs became treasured members of the crew as in the Scottish steamer Strathgarry’s photo showing the ship’s company including the captain’s terrier and two cats. Sam Hood created an unparalleled record of Sydney’s maritime life from the 1890s to the 1950s, capturing Located in the heart of beautiful Eden, only minutes walk to club, hotels and shopping centre

images of ships, crews, cargo handling, shipbuilding and launching, wartime scenes, pleasure boating and sailing through his lens. Little Shipmates – seafaring pets is open from 16 October - 23 January '11. The Eden Killer Whale Museum is open Monday to Saturday from 9.15am - 3.45 pm and Sundays 11.15am – 3.45pm. Cruise Twofold Bay with Cat Balou During January Cat Balou Cruises are offering holiday makers a choice of two cruises that explore Twofold Bay, one of the deepest natural harbours in the world. Departing from the Port of Eden, both cruises stay within the Bay and as there are no sand bars to cross, passengers are not required to wear life jackets. Ros & Gordon Butt have been operating Cat Balou Cruises for the past 23 years and their visitor's book is a testament to passenger satisfaction. Cat Balou is a 75-passenger, 16m catamaran offering plenty of room with a large inside cabin, a walk-around bow and spacious upper deck. A 1hr Budget Bay Cruise is ideal for those on a budget or with young children; on each trip Skipper Gordon will take passengers on a mystery cruise somewhere in Eden’s Twofold Bay. Biscuits and fruit juice are provided. Operating during the peak December/January holiday season only, Budget Cruises cost $65 for a family of five (2 adults + 3 children

under 16yrs), adults & seniors $20, children 5-15yrs $15, children under 5 yrs $5. For those wanting a more leisurely cruise, try a popular 2 hour Twofold Bay Discovery Cruise that showcases the history and beauty of this busy port. As Cat Balou cruises the two folds of Twofold Bay there’s plenty to see, including Boyd’s Tower, Edrom Lodge, the Seahorse Inn at Boydtown, Quarantine Bay, woodchip mill and naval wharf. An entertaining live commentary is given throughout and morning tea is included; beer and wine are also available. Discovery Cruises cost $32.50 for adults, $30 seniors, $20 children 5 – 15 yrs, $10 under 5 yrs or $95 for a family of five with children under 16 yrs. There is an excellent chance of seeing dolphins and seals on the two cruises offered , so don’t forget to bring a camera for some memorable photographs. Cat Balou have won a number of awards for excellence. In 2010 they

A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late 19th century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. The village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes,

Footprint Theatre presents Ferdinand the Bull at Panboola Don’t miss Footprint Theatre’s summer production of Ferdinand The Bull based on the book, The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson. This wonderful play for children and their families will be directed by Lis Shelley and staged outdoors at Panboola in Pambula. Ferdinand the Bull is a delightful story about a little bull who just wants to sit under his favourite tree and smell the flowers ... until one day, the local duke needs a fierce bull for a bullfight...! It is an entertaining story about being yourself and not having to be a bully that has recently been adapted for the stage by award-winning US playwright Karen Zacarias, with music by Deborah Wicks La Puma. So bring along a picnic basket and journey back to 1930s Spain, with the exciting sights and sounds of flamenco dancers and live guitar music performed by local Latin and acoustic band, Guitarama. There will be 6 morning performances at 10am on 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th January and two afternoon performances at 4pm on 8th & 9th January. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for Footprint members and $5 for children. A portion of all ticket sales will go toward supporting Panboola.

Ferdinand the Bull is a show for all ages, proudly supported by the Pambula Community Bank and is a summer holiday event not to be missed! Tickets can be purchased online by direct debit at www.footprint.org.au or in person at the Pambula Community Bank. So why not surprise someone special with a ticket to the show this holiday period? Bega Valley Shire Council launched its Don’t Be a Tosser education campaign this month, urging people to take responsibility for their rubbish. Councillor Tony Allen, Mayor of Bega Valley Shire Council, says the campaign “aims to clean up the council area, educate the community about the effects of littering, and make us all stop and think about how our own habits impact on our environment.” “Littering on our beaches is a persistent environmental issue,” Councillor Tony Allen said. “Plastic litter, food scraps and cigarette butts that beach goers leave behind can impact on beach amenity for some considerable time, particularly at busy times of the year.” “By using the slogan Don’t Be a Tosser we are giving a clear message that littering is socially unacceptable. We want people to take responsibility for their rubbish by using bins or taking their rubbish home,” Councillor Tony Allen said.

Ford Park will again be the centre of Merimbula's NYE celebrations in 2010. The day’s events kick off with markets in the morning featuring the best in local food, crafts and interesting stalls. From around midday, live music takes centre stage with entertainment provided by local up-and-coming bands, school bands and various musical acts. There will also be rides and amusements for all the family, providing a great opportunity to bring the kids and a picnic blanket and enjoy some free entertainment. As the day turns to dusk the entertainment will be turned up a notch when a great line up of talented professional musicians hits the stage. The headline act on the night is country music sensation “The Pigs". Not your typical country music band, The Pigs combine their onstage personas and witty antics with a unique blend of country, rockabilly and pop. The family fireworks will grace the sky around 9.30pm, followed by a local DJ to get the young ones in the mood. The grand finale with more fireworks at midnight will bring in the New Year. A full schedule of events will be available in the Merimbula News Weekly in the weeks prior to the event.

Discover history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to visit. Built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. The Museum provides a secure site for displays and stories of local history, including: - Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inherited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula goldfields; - the Wharf and the Illawarra Steamship Company that provided transport for people and goods along the coast before roads were built; - Syms Covington, who travelled with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and lived in Pambula in a house that is now a restaurant; - gold and pyrophyllite mining around Pambula. The Museum is open from 1.30pm – 4pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (closed Christmas Day). Entry is $3 and children are free. Phone 6495 2114 for information.

Fishing Report & Tide Chart - January January along the South Coast sees some great fishing available. Whether you're fishing the rocks, beaches, estuaries or offshore, an array of species will be on offer using a variety of different methods and techniques. Good luck! Beaches: Fishing in the late afternoons on a rising tide can pay huge dividends during January, with bream, whiting, tailor and possibly mulloway all on the cards. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutter to the northern end for best results. Here you will get plenty of cover from the traditional Nor’easters that this month brings. Fresh squid, pilchards, pipi and striped tuna are idea, but live beach worms are certainly the best bait. Better beaches to try are Tura, Gillard’s, Camel, Tilba, Brou and Blackfellows. Rocks: The pelagic action will be in full swing with salmon, tailor, kingfish and bonito all available. Anglers throwing chromed, sliced lures up to 60grams, whole pilchards rigged on ganged hooks and live bait will have a great time. Almost any deeper headland should produce but some of the better ledges are Tura Head, Tathra Wharf, Mystery Bay and the Golf course rocks at Narooma. If you’re after a feed, most washes will hold bream, blackfish and drummer with cunjevoi, fresh prawns, bread and cabbage being the gun baits. Estuaries: Most estuaries along the coast will continue to fish well despite the increased boat traffic that this time of year

brings. Flathead, whiting, bream, tailor and mulloway will all be available with soft plastics, live baiting and fresh baits the best way to tempt one. Concentrate your efforts around tide changes with early mornings also a good time to fish. Using burley in conjunction with fresh baits should see some great action with Pambula, Bermagui, Narooma and Batemans Bay estuaries good places to try. Offshore: With the water hovering around the 22degree mark, marlin, tuna and albacore will be patrolling the current lines. Bait activity will determine where the fish are, but trolling lures and slow-trolling live baits from the 40-fathom line to the shelf is a good starting point. Inshore snapper, kingfish, morwong, flathead and longfinned perch should keep the bottom bouncing brigade happy. Almost all reefs will be holding fish with fresh squid, striped tuna fillets and pilchards being the best baits. A few places to try are Horseshoe, Turingal, 6 and 12 mile, Potato Point and the reefs off Moruya. Montague Island will have kingfish also with jigs and live baits the best methods for catching them. Tight lines till next month. Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures, and provides guided fishing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. With over 20 years experience in the industry, Stuart really knows his fishing. Check out his website at www.ausfishing.com.au for more information, or call Stuart on 0400 062 504 or 02 6495 9902 to book a fishing experience you won’t forget.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 5 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a

place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for anyone new to the region; housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery, which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site that lies 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a relatively intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is unique in that it is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This however provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the full Montreal story; a story of mystery, history and fascinating anecdotes. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors to wander through the beautiful forest and tree ferns. During

the gold rush period, the miners, in their frenzy for profit, laid the area bare; hard to imagine now given the lushness of the area. The track itself is approximately 200m long and most is wheel chair accessible, and there are plenty of strategically located benches along the track. The tour itself takes around 1 ¼ hours and toilet facilities are available. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm. If you have a group of more than 12, you are welcome to contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. Admission is $5pp.

Monthly Garden Advice Summer Survivors With the warmer weather on the way we should now turn our thoughts to drier gardens and plants that can tolerate the hot weather with less moisture. I fully appreciate we have had a lot of rain recently but there will be dry periods over the summer months where a dry tolerant plant will be required. There has been a tremendous resurgence in recent times for plants that require less water to survive and many developers of “new plants are directing their total efforts to providing

gardeners with these types of plants. Quality nurseries endeavour to have many of these in stock at any one time, and would be full of great ideas to assist you with your dry tolerant garden. Consider plants that have silver or grey foliage as they not only survive lengthy periods of dryness and care, but also add background strength to the garden throughout the year. Place them amongst other shrubs to give contrast to other flowering plants. In winter when parts of the garden may be looking

dreary, the silver foliaged plants lift the garden out of the doldrums and plants like French lavender (Lavendula dentata) are at their best. Consider using a range of herbs that not only give you visual pleasure but also culinary use. There are a tremendous assortment of herbs that have grey or silver foliage including Thyme, Sage, Rosemary, Wormwood and Oregano. These can be included in the garden that is low maintenance and can survive with less water than many other groups of plants. Please remember that many garden plants can survive lengthy periods of dry conditions and it is not necessary to water them every day. I recommend the use of water storage granules at the time of planting. Remember also to mulch as much of your garden as possible as this reduces the need for excessive use of water and will give your plants a much better chance of getting through to the next rainfall. I wish you all well for 2011 and let the rains fall in abundance.

Tilba

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

The Dromedary Hotel If you’re spending time in Central Tilba, drop in to the Dromedary Hotel and “have a cold one” in the historic atmosphere of an original country pub. The pub was one of the first buildings constructed in the village, and originally was run as a coffee palace. Operating as a hotel since 1896, the “Drom” has a long tradition of hospitality that is still evident today. Located right in the centre of the National Trust-classified village, the “Drom” has accommodation available, making it a perfect base to explore the town, with everything located within easy walking distance. With cold beers on tap, delicious lunches and dinners available and a shady garden, the Dromedary Hotel is the perfect spot to while away an afternoon. During the summer months some of the best musicians on the coast play live at the Drom on the weekends; check the Live Music listing on page 38 of this month's Imag for all the details. Bodalla Secrets

In 2010 Bodalla celebrated the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mort's purchase of 13,000 acres of land at Bodalla and the beginning of the Bodalla Estate. Mort became a pioneer of the Australian dairying industry, and many of the dairy farms he established still operate today. The magnificent All Saints Church, constructed from granite quarried on Bodalla Estate, was dedicated by the Mort family to Thomas Mort’s memory, with the foundation stone laid two years after he died in 1880. All Saints is open each day for visitors, and it's worth a stop just to see the stained glass windows. Bodalla today is a bustling village with its historical roots still present; make sure you visit the businesses mentioned below as you explore this picturesque village.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as minigolf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.
