From The Editor Welcome to the January/February edition of the Far South Coast iMag. As I write in early December, there's a smoke haze in the air from the Currowan fires north of Batemans Bay - our thoughts go out to those affected by fires, and those who are fighting them. Hang in there! There's a huge range of events and things to do happening over summer this year, even though it may be a little dry. Both the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre and NPWS are running holiday programs with activities for kids and families - read more on pages 8 - 9 and page 21. Tathra Wharf to Waves is on again in January - I wonder which well-known athletes and celebrities will tackle the 1200m ocean swim this year? Get the details on page 29. Sapphire Coast Turf Club is holding the Bega Cheese Bega Cup Carnival on February 1st - 2nd, and with a prize pool of $500,000 on offer across the weekend, it's sure to attract entries from rural, regional and metropolitan trainers. Also on at the Turf Club on the same weekend is the inaugural Sapphire Coast Caravan & Lifestyle Expo, showcasing all that the Sapphire Coast has to offer in one spot. To wrap up February, one of my personal favourites, the Cobargo Folk Festival is celebrating its 25th birthday in 2020. With a stellar international, Australian and local line-up, it's going to be a great party. Details are on pages 36 - 37. Read more about other events in our What's On listings on pages 38 - 40. Keep your iMag handy, download it from our website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au or from our Facebook page - Far South Coast iMag, and stay safe!

Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

Cat Balou - 2019 Trip Advisor Hall of Fame winner If you're interested in exploring Twofold Bay in Eden, then Cat Balou Cruises can provide the perfect trip for you and your family. An informative live commentary is provided, whether you're enjoying a half day trip or a shorter cruise, as the experienced crew of Cat Balou navigate around Twofold Bay. Twofold Bay is one of the deepest natural harbours in the world and there’s so much to see, including historic Boyd’s Tower, Edrom Lodge, Seahorse Inn at Boydtown, Quarantine Bay, the woodchip mill and the naval wharf. There is an excellent chance of seeing dolphins, seals and penguins on the cruise so don’t forget your camera. Refreshments are included on all cruises. Cat Balou Cruises have been operating for the past 30 years from the Port of Eden and their visitors' book, plus the awards they have won over the years, testifies to passenger satisfaction. HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafĂŠs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop and even an old-fashioned milkbar. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth.

10

Pambula Lake is the operational base for several local oyster growers. Don't leave without trying some of Broadwater Oyster's delicious freshlyshucked oysters, grown in the clean waters of Pambula Lake.

VISITOR INFORMATION Beach Street, Merimbula Ph: 02 6495 1129

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

24

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. Take a stroll around the fantastic walking track that goes all the way from the sporting fields near the Bridge over to the Bega River. The track then continues around the Old Racecourse.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Today, the Wharf is a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground

28

located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking and cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, with gourmet delis, cafĂŠs and restaurants. Tathra Beach Tapas is located right on the sand next to the Surf Club, and features local produce and seafood, great coffee, cake, snacks and is fully licensed. The Tathra Beach Country Club's Golden Sands Chinese restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday. On The Perch Bird Park at Kalaru is short drive from Tathra, and is an experience you won't want to miss. You can enjoy a great coffee at the Brood Cafe at the bird park in very peaceful surroundings listening to the birds, and there's no park entry payable if you are visiting the cafe only.

Ride, swim and run at Tathra Wharf to Waves weekend Ocean swim fans and lovers of mountain bike tracks won’t be disappointed by visiting Tathra on the third weekend of January for the annual Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. The series of ocean swims on Sunday January 19th is in its 19th year, and is considered the highlight of what is always an action-packed weekend on the Far South Coast of NSW. On Saturday, January 18th, there’s the Tathra Beachside 2km fun run on Tathra Beach, while mountain bike enthusiasts will also be in action with a 23km ‘Bega to the Beach’ ride from Bega across Dr George Mountain to Tathra. Experienced triathletes or anyone who wants to give it a shot can sign up for all three activities, but in previous years it's the swim that's the attraction. Sunday is the big day for all the family, with visitors and locals invited to enter one of a

series of 600m swims according to their age bracket (eight classes for age 10 and up) or the 1200m Bega Betta Home Living 'Splash for Cash' open race (from age 12 and up) which offers a $500 cash prize for the first male and first female onto the beach and an artwork by a local artist. Lots of prizes for places in the 600m series swims and major random draw prizes over the weekend including holiday packages in Tathra and up in the Snowy Mountains, a Raw Surfboard and a fantastic Mountain Bike. All the swims start from the historic Tathra Wharf, a remnant of the days when steamers carried goods and passengers along the coast. In use from 1862 - 1952, it was restored by the National Trust and local residents. Entrants may find themselves lining up with seasoned ocean swimmers, AFL footballers and Commonwealth Games medallists, with competitors coming from around Australia on a regular basis. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

34

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Sally Wilson Art sells fine art, individually-crafted bracelets as well as whimsical merchandise like cards, mugs, tea towels, hand-made bags and more.

Home & Garage Giftware One of Cobargo's newer retailers, Home & Garage Giftware is one of those shops that really does have something for just about everyone. You'll find an amazing range of vintage inspired automobilia, with signs featuring everything from 1940s tractors to 1970s Holdens. There's also lots of clocks, plaques, mugs, drink coolers, key rings, magnets, coasters and other giftware. If homewares are more your thing, Home & Garage Giftware features vintage, nature and animal themed cushions, tea towels, artwork, bags, signage, clocks, mugs magnets, coasters and beautiful greeting cards. Business owner Jennifer Main is also a photographer and has a photography studio in the shop. Jennifer takes wonderful portraits

of families, pets, landscapes and more. See her images at Jennifer Main Photography www.jmphotography.online. Please note bookings are required for photography sessions. Home & Garage Giftware carries natural body products and eco-friendly alternatives like handmade soap, balms, body butters, candles and reusable alternatives to plastic items. Jennifer prints most of her products herself, and has local linocut art and other handmade creations. If you can't find something you like, you're not looking hard enough! Twenty-five years old and stronger than ever When the first Cobargo Folk Festival was held in late February 1996, the village that hosted it had a population of just over 300. It had a total of 15 acts and attracted hundreds of visitors to the picturesque village. Total ticket revenue was just over $10,000. At the end of next February (Feb 28 - Mar1) the 25th Cobargo Folk Festival, now held at the Cobargo Showground, will attract thousands of visitors to see over 80 acts (including the youth and dance program) and will inject over $1.5 million into the local economy. The steady growth of the Festival over the years is a tribute to the vision of the founders and the community spirit of the people of Cobargo and surrounding villages who have kept the festival a volunteer event, and to the wider folk community who continue to support it. When it comes to value for money, it’s hard to go past a festival like Cobargo that benefits from being close to other bigger festivals, like Port Fairy and Blue Mountains, in attracting international acts who are here for the March/ April festival season. While delivering a high quality program, it strives to keep ticket and camping prices low and provide great camping facilities, accessible venues and a family friendly atmosphere. Daughter from Scotland and Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura from New Zealand. Joining them from Australia are the likes of Ruth Hazleton and her band with the Daisywheel Project, Luke Plumb and Kate Burke, Martin Pearson, Doc and the Delegates, Shortis and Simpson, Michael Waugh, Marcia Howard, Jan “Yarn” Wositsky, Bruce Mathiske and many, many more. Special mention should be made of Bega Valley local musical hero, Damon Davies, who was part of the organising team and played at the first festival and who will be playing this year with fantastic local band, Jackson State. “Folk Festivals nowadays cater for a wide range of musical tastes and age groups but at the heart of the music is a story – if a song tells a story then it’s folk music,” said Festival Director, Zena Armstrong. “With the retirement of our Festival Program Manager, Dave Crowden, we’ve taken a more collective approach to choosing and programming the acts for next year, drawing on the diverse musical knowledge in our organising team,” she said. “The hardest thing is having to look through over 400 applications and make the hard decisions as we only have around 40 spots on the main programme.” Early bird tickets are now on sale at www.cobargofolkfestival.com - check the website for the closing date of early bird tickets. You won’t find better value for money at any festival in the country, so come and join us in celebrating 25 years of Keeping the Heart in Folk. www.cobargofolkfestival.com

Some of their regular featured beers are Montreal Gold, a deliciously malty Golden Ale, 1900 Wattleseed porter which is a favourite with the dark beer drinkers, and a Starshine Sparkling ale which is an easy drinking, hard to stop lighter flavoured ale. CharmingTilba Things to See & Do Go for a hike up Gulaga Mountain Explore the fascinating shops Take a tour with Tilba Talks Heritage Walks Drop in and explore Gulaga Gallery Try fishing at Mystery Bay

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak.
