Mallacoota â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Heart of the Coastal Wilderness Mallacoota is one of Gippslandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great escapes, surrounded by the magnificent wilderness of the Croajingolong National Park and set on the beautiful Mallacoota Inlet. There is a visitor information shed, lake cruises, hire boats, bikes and kayaks, organized tours and walking tracks dotted throughout the township, with boat launching ramps at four locations. Boat owners are encouraged to explore the coastline with twelve picnic jetties with

free barbecues and casual moorings. Discover the coast from the popular patrolled Bastion Point Beach and Betka Beach, to the rugged Quarry Beach where snorkellers explore the rocks, or the peaceful Secret Beach. The Top Lake, Bottom Lake, the inlets, cliffs and beaches are all great places to explore - or just sit and watch the beautiful sunsets for which the area is renowned. You may even spot a mighty Southern Right whale from vantage points around the town during the migrating season. Historic attractions include evidence of indigenous occupation with numerous visible middens and stone used in tool making and the fully restored WWII communication bunker museum at the airport. Mallacoota is situated within the Croajingolong National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve recognised for its unique flora and fauna and its essential role in the preservation of native Australian species. Undoubtedly one of Australia's most spectacular parks, Croajingolong encompasses 100 kilometres of coast and hinterland and features an extraordinary diversity of landscapes from pure white sandy beaches, rocky coastal headlands and granite peaks to rambling heathland, lush

rainforests and towering eucalypts. It also supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, with more than 1000 native plants and over 300 bird species. Accommodation in Mallacoota is diverse and caters for couples, families and groups with four and five star outlets available in Gipsy Point, a beautiful peninsula jutting into the top lake of the Mallacoota Inlet, home to a large mob of kangaroos. If you are towing a van, camping or driving in an RV, the Foreshore Holiday Park is not to be missed. The park is situated right on the lakeshore within easy walking distance of the town centre and provides a number of sites with access to private moorings right on the lake. February Welcome to 2012 on the Far South Coast. Thanks heavens there are so may places to explore and things to do on the Far South Coast; the weather has certainly been a bit patchy so far this summer! But hopefully by the time you read this, the weather has warmed up and ocean swimming is feasible again. In its 17th year this year, the Cobargo Folk Festival is happening over the last weekend in February. With international performers including the hilarious Beez from Germany, blues, folk, indigenous performances, dance, theatre and comedy plus a youth venue, there are plenty of reasons to spend the weekend in Cobargo. You can find more information on pages 23 and 24. There's a new exhibition on at the Eden Killer Whale Museum titled "Wrecks, reef and the Mermaid' which contains spectacular underwater

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

Wrecks, reef and the Mermaid at the Eden Killer Whale Museum

A new photographic exhibition at the Museum shows maritime archaeologists at work on two rewarding expeditions off the Queensland coast two years ago. In partnership with the Silentworld Foundation, Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) divers found the remains of HM Colonial Schooner Mermaid on the Great Barrier Reef in January 2009 and investigated other wreck sites on Wreck Reefs in the Coral

This ANMM travelling exhibition, titled Wrecks, reef and the Mermaid, includes stunning underwater photographs and a short video, all by Xanthe Rivett, of the dive team in action and their coralencrusted finds. The 21.4 metre (70-foot) Mermaid ran aground off the Frankland Islands, some 40 km south-east of Cairns, in 1829. Attempting a short-cut through the Great Barrier Reef and ignoring advice from more experienced officers aboard, the captain ran the schooner on to an unidentified reef where it became a total wreck. Australian waters at that time, having previously served Captain Phillip Parker King in his surveys of the Australian coast between 1818 – 1820.

In December 2009 the ANMM/ Silentworld team headed 450 km offshore to Wreck Reefs in the Coral Sea, where divers took just 4 days to locate and survey the remains of two vessels closely associated with Matthew Flinders. HMS Porpoise, a 10-gun Royal Navy sloop, commanded by Lieutenant Robert Fowler with Flinders on board as a passenger, was travelling in convoy through the relatively unexplored waters of the Coral Sea when it struck an isolated and unchartered reef. Porpoise immediately fired a cannon to warn two following vessels – Cato, an armed cargo ship, and Bridgewater, an East India Company cargo ship. Cato and Bridgewater both changed course, but towards each other. When Captain Park on Cato realised what was happening, he ordered his ship off the wind to avoid collision, but Cato too struck the reef, just two cable lengths (370 metres) from Porpoise. Bridgewater ignominiously continued on its way to India, with no heed for the plight of the men on the other two ships. The ANMM/Silentworld expedition carried out extensive surveys of the wreck sites at Porpoise Cay to pinpoint the archaeological remains of these historically important vessels. Silentworld Foundation is a not-forprofit organisation established to further maritime archaeological research and to expand knowledge of Australia’s early maritime history. Archaeology supported by the Australian Research Council. Wrecks, reefs and the Mermaid is on display from 17th February - 20th May.

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent

swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Baby Koala Sapphire at Potoroo Palace Potoroo Palace Native Animal Sanctuary's baby Koala received her official name this month. The raffle for the naming rights has been running across the region for months, and at a much-anticipated celebration, local motel owner Sue Wilson's name was drawn. She promptly gave the prize to her cleaner, Judy Waiting, who, after lunch with friends, decided on a name. Meet Sapphire. The Sanctuary's cutest baby is still at the rambunctious stage - crawling on mum's head, chasing the boots of keepers and grabbing them, running up trees and leaping back down. "It's because she's still on mum's milk," says Head Zookeeper Karen Johnson. "Once she converts to gum leaves it'll be all snoozeville.” The Sanctuary has three baby emus, too. Found by a local forester, they were hatched and midwifed by one of the keepers, and are growing fast. They’re already more than knee-high to most things, and are consummate goofballs – running, somersaulting, dancing under the sprinkler; typical Aussie kids, having fun and growing fast. From echidnas to wombats, dingoes, kangaroos, cockatoos, possums, Potoroo has most things Australian (including a Hills Hoist about behind the feed shed). Sapphire Coast Music Society Welcomes Back Friends in 2012 The Sapphire Coast Music Society 2012 concert program welcomes back musicians who have struck a chord with local audiences, as well as talented new faces. The first concert for the year on February 26th at 2.30pm is the historically informed, popular chamber group Ironwood. This talented group of chamber musicians performed at

Wolumla in 2010, and we look forward to another exciting program. The most anticipated concert for 2012 will be the return of the Sydney Welsh Choir on April 8th. Booking ahead for this concert is advisable, as their previous performances have sold out. On June 29th, David Miller makes his annual pilgrimage to Wolumla, bringing with him a talented selection of students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The SCMS is delighted that Dimitri Ashkenazy (clarinettist) and Suzanne Powell (piano) will return for another concert on September 23rd. When they

appeared in 2010, their performance received rapturous responses from a very large audience. The final concert for the year will be the return of the highly popular, charismatic pianist, Lachlan Redd. His ability to charm audiences with his music and elegant playing is legendary. All concerts are at the Wolumla Hall, and tickets can be purchased at the following venues about a fortnight before each concert and at the door on the day: Magpie Music (Bega), Booktique (Merimbula) and Eden Music Centre. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other

walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafés and restaurants. On the 21st and 22nd January, Tathra is becomes the base for the Tathra Wharf to Waves Weekend. Running since 2002, this event now encompasses a fun run, 40km bike ride and ocean swims from the Wharf to the Surf Lifesaving Club.

Explore with Brogo Wilderness Canoes Early summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warming up and large numbers of visitors are still to arrive. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds, frogs and water dragons. Continue through the Reserve until

you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach. The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium.

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. The new Sapphire Marketplace complex has opened after a 15 month construction phase, bringing nationally

recognised retail outlets to Bega. Housing the largest Big W outside of Sydney, the complex represents a huge change to Bega's retail landscape.

Step back in time at the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre and the Bega Pioneers Museum William Tarlinton and the Imlay Brothers were amongst the first Europeans to settle in the Bega Valley region around 1829, but members of the Yuin Monaro tribal group had been inhabiting the area for thousands of years prior to this. The beef and dairying industries were established in the 1840s, and still remain significant contributors to the Valley's economy. Bega Cheese has played a huge role in the development of the dairy industry in Bega, and people from around Australia and the world come to visit

Another fantastic place to learn about Bega's history is the Bega Pioneers Museum, on the Corner of Auckland and Bega Sts. Housing the largest collection of framed photographs of pioneers in NSW, even the building which houses the Museum is classified (it was built in 1858-9 and operated as a hotel). The Pioneers' Museum has many rooms and outside exhibition areas containing pieces from every aspect of early Bega - industries, clothing, military, machinery, transport, household effects, as well as family histories. Wandering through the Museum really is like stepping back in time, and children will find the displays of everyday items fascinating. The Pioneers Museum is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am 4pm, and Saturday from 10am - 2pm, except public holidays. Cobargo Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the

A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them. The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of

century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs.

Cobargo Folk Festival - a whole lot more than just folk music Once again the Cobargo Showground will become “tent city” for the annual gathering of international, national and local performers that is the Cobargo Folk Festival. But the weekend is about more than traditional folk music; also on the bill is comedy, theatre, blues, bluegrass, country music and dance. The Festival, held on the outskirts of the historic and picturesque village of Cobargo, has become a fixture on the Australian Folk Festival calendar and each year attracts enthusiasts from interstate and overseas. Concerts, displays, dances and workshops are featured in eight venues within the showground, including a special kids venue, “The Crossing Youth” and workshops. International artists appearing this year include The Beez (Germany), George Mann (USA) and Alistair Brown from the UK. Australian stars include Judy Small, Kerrianne Cox, Ami Williamson, Martin Pearson, the finger-picking guitarist

Nick Charles and blues sensation Fiona Boyes. By popular request the high energy band The Woohoo Revue has been invited again and will appeal to the younger folk who packed out their performances last year. Local and interstate indigenous performers will feature at the 2012 Festival with a concert, workshops and dancing hosted by Kerrianne Cox, community leader and celebrated singer from Broome in W.A.. The main concert hall, named “The Gulaga”, will be converted into a concert-type theatre for a full-scale theatrical production of Steele Rudd’s original play “The Old Selection”, performed by Footprint Theatre of Pambula. This project was made possible by Festivals Australia, an Australian Government program which supports cultural activity at regional and community levels. Festival patrons can join in the many dances and workshops, with the bush

dance, tango, contra dance, western swing all popular, or sit back and watch the expert performers in their displays. Over the three days there's a Comedy Concert with Glover and Sorrenson, Martin Pearson and Dingo’s Breakfast, a bluegrass concert with Jimmy The Fish, The Freerangers and Strange Bedfellows. A blues concert with Dorothy-Jane Gosper, Fiona Boyes, Damien Coen and Paul Johnson, Nick Charles and Pete Fiedler and Songs of the Snowy Mountains by the iconic bush band Franklyn B Paverty. The Festival has a licensed bar, cafes and exotic food stalls. Camping with toilet and shower facilities is available for all full weekend ticket holders. Young people are most welcome to attend and join in, but they must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source

of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometers south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba

was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

Monthly Garden Advice Autumn Ramblings Well, here we are into another year. It is hard to imagine where the time goes. For those of you who are well and truly into gardening, the growth rate of plants over the last few months surely shows us where time goes. The summer season so far has been great for gardening, with the variety of weather conditions from warm hot days to cooler wet days. This all bodes well for great growing conditions for plants, but unfortunately these conditions also bring with it a few things we need to keep an eye out for. Plants will have made a lot of supple new growth, and as we move into autumn this growth can have a light trim to thicken up the branches leading into winter. During February the dead heading of perennials and shrubs will in some cases encourage a late summer flush of flowers

and many of these flower heads can be used in floral arrangements within the home. A good example of this are the beautiful dry heads of Hydrangea. These combined with some “in season” flowers make a lovely floral arrangement. Be vigilant for insect attack on the supple new foliage and spray with a systemic insecticide. Late fungal activity on roses can cause the plant to become unsightly. Pick off the diseased leaves and dispose into a plastic bag. A control spray of a quality fungicide will keep any future activity at bay. For those of you that are into the vegetable garden, now is the time to start preparing the garden for your Autumn plantings. Fork the bed over adding some animal manures and lime. Leave for a week or so and fork over again ready for the planting of carrots, cabbage, broccoli,

cauliflower and any other seasonal vegetables that suit your taste buds. In the flower garden pansy, viola, primula, poppies and other Autumn/Winter flowering annuals will start appearing in your nursery. Using the same method of soil preparation as for your vegetables, get these in soon for a great display in Autumn and Winter. Narooma • Bodalla • Moruya Narooma is one of the most scenic towns on the Far South Coast, sitting between the ocean and the startling blue-green waters of Wagonga Inlet. The town manages to retain a '1950s fishing village' vibe but modernised, with great shops, cafes and restaurants. It's a fantastic place for families, with a patrolled beach, bike tracks and lots of waterways to explore or fish in. Just up the road from Narooma is Bodalla, the village with the magnificent stone church and many other historic buildings. The village was developed by Thomas Mort in the late 1800s as a private country estate based around the dairy and cheese making industries, which still dominate Bodalla today. All Saints Anglican Church was commissioned by the Mort family in memory of Thomas Mort and his wife. Work began on the Church in 1880 and was completed in 1901. Further north, the township of Moruya also has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore. It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place. These days however, Moruya is known

for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and pubs with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town that has lots to offer.
