The highlight for the Coast this month is the 15th Cobargo Folk Festival, held at the Showgrounds in Cobargo. This fantastic event goes beyond the traditional notion of a folk festival, with comedy, poetry, multicultural dance and elements of jazz, blues, bluegrass and country music. Normie Rowe is playing in Merimbula at the Classic Rock and Vintage Car Shows, a joint promotion between Bega Cheese, the NRMA Merimbula Beach Holiday Park and The Rotary Club of Pambula. This family fun event is on Saturday February 20th at the picturesque Holiday Park on Short Point Road, Merimbula. Ben Boyd National Park - Kiah Inlet George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. This history of collaboration between killer whales and humans was the subject of the documentary “Killers Of Eden”, screened on ABC TV in 2006. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. To celebrate the significance of whales to the town, Eden holds its Whale Festival in November each year.

The historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay, in the heyday of the whaling industry. The Seahorse Inn, also built in 1843, has been beautifully restored to its former glory, and the ruins of Boyd’s church can still be seen. Eden is a paradise for those who love to fish, with kilometres of beaches, river estuaries and rock platforms to explore, as well as charter boat operations for access for deep-sea fishing. Eden has beautiful beaches close to town; try Aslings Beach for a surf, or Corcora Beach for fun with the family.

Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration is a travelling exhibition from the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and is at the Eden Killer Whale Museum from February 6th - April 26th. The exhibition explores the collaboration between community and industry in creating one of the first bush regeneration sites in Australia. When thinking of Broken Hill the mind conjures up images of a mining town on the edge of the outback. Not many people know of its significance in environmental history as the site of one of Australia’s earliest green actions. In 1936, the Barrier Field Naturalists Club led by Albert Morris, enlisted the help of a mining company, and through the process of native revegetation defeated the drifts of sand that were swallowing the outskirts of the famous mining town. Albert Morris, a Quaker and self-taught amateur botanist developed a passionate interest in plants from a young age, and founded the Barrier Field Naturalists’ Club, named after the nearby Barrier Ranges. He led this devoted team and his work was far ahead of his time. Continued on by his wife Margaret Morris after his death in 1939, the work of bush revegetation helped make Broken Hill a livable city. The Broken Hill landscape was seri-

ously affected by European settlement. Originally the country side was covered with woody mulga scrub. After the mines opened in 1885, the rapidly growing township required wood for building, fencing, firewood and fuel for the miner’s steam engines. Trees and shrubs disappeared and newly introduced goats, cattle, horses and camels grazed the cleared land. The landscape soon became denuded and desolate, and without vegetation, big winds blew away the top soil and major sands drifted to the city outskirts. Albert Morris believed that the growing problem in Broken Hill could be overcome by establishing regeneration reserves to the north, west and south of the town. In 1936 an initial area was fenced and planted with trees and vegetation native to the area. Now known as the Albert Morris Park, the trial was highly successful and in 1938 more sections of land were fenced from grazing rabbits and livestock and left to recover.

Morris also photographed the flowers and landscape of the surrounding area. These black and white slides were hand coloured by his wife Margaret Morris and are featured in the touring exhibition. Greening the Silver City: seeds of bush regeneration is a regional touring exhibition developed by the Powerhouse Museum in collaboration with Broken Hill City Council and community, and supported by Movable Heritage NSW.

The Broken Hill revegetation site was the first example of successful bush regeneration in its broadest sense within Australia. It improved the standard of living of residents as well as conserving plant and animal biodiversity. The regeneration reserves are now NationalTrust listed.

Albert Morris’ legacy does not limit itself to Broken Hill as he amassed a collection of about 7,000 plant specimens which can now be found in several of Australia’s major herbia. More than 1,000 of these are held in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney. Morris’ methods were applied to other mining towns in Australia and the improvement of living conditions in Broken Hill were quoted worldwide.

Pambula Beach - Pambula Lake - Wyndham The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation. This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring the floodplain and former race course. Just south of Pambula is Pambula Lake, where thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a boat ramp and several oyster farmers who have fresh Pambula Lake oysters for sale.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Classic Rock And Vintage Cars On Show in Merimbula On Saturday February 20th, a joint promotion between Bega Cheese, the NRMA Merimbula Beach Holiday Park and The Rotary Club of Pambula will see Aussie entertainment legend NORMIE ROWE perform at the picturesque Holiday Park on Short Point Road, Merimbula. Normie’s appearance will be the highlight of a two day gala event being run by Adam and Belinda Thomas, managers of the park. The centerpiece of the event is a classic and vintage car exhibition, featuring well over 100 beautifully maintained and presented cars, ranging from 1911 rattlers to late model Porsches. All the classic Aussie models are represented, as are the local car clubs, with many other cars travelling from all over NSW. There are lots of activities for the kids as well with rides, a merry go round, jumping castle and face painting Food and drinks, including alcohol will be available and there's plenty of shade provided. BYO chairs, rugs, etc. Normie will be backed by the great local muso’s The Stumblin’ Wilburys. Supporting artist is Melbourne legend Gary Eastwood, who captivates audiences with his vocals, guitar playing and his incredible repertoire, ranging from 1965 to 2005. Saturday, with live music kicking off at 6pm and Normie Rowe at 7.45pm. The Classic Rock And Vintage Cars show is part of the Bega Cheese Concert Series, a series of musical events run by the Rotary Club of Pambula, with all proceeds going to the Sapphire Aquatic Centre Project. Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School Museum One of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum. A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time these holidays. Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day. Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. It provides a secure site for displays of local history such as stories of: • Matthew Munn and his Maizena and his son, Armstrong, who inher ited his father’s wealth and lost it by investing in the Pambula gold fields;

• mutiny and murder on an Ameri can whaling ship, and many more. Short-beaked Echidnas are found in the Bega Valley, sometimes even entering backyards. Emus and even Dingoes can be found in the surrounding area.

Koalas and Long-nosed Potoroos are very rare here now, but were once abundant. Potoroo Palace’s newest attraction is Breakfast With The Birds, held on the second Saturday of each month at 7.30am (negotiable). Bookings are essential. A gourmet breakfast will be served in the barbeque area, while you watch the birds who visit as well as the ones who live there. You will be able to see what goes on behind the scenes before the sanctuary opens each day. You will see the keepers doing their rounds. You may even hear the amazing dingo chorus with four dingoes howling in harmony. Dinners are also held at the Blue Wren Café on the fourth Friday of each month to raise funds for the Sanctuary. Delicious food and beautiful music have been the key to the success of these evening functions. Each month there is a Curry Night, and local musicians provide fantastic music each evening. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting some $50m of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for anyone new to the region; housed in a reproduction of one of the first buildings on the site, the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early

'Living Artist' exhibits at Bega Valley Regional Gallery The second biennial ‘Living Artist’ Scholarship winner, Tanja Riese will present her first major solo exhibition ‘Journey to Home’ at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery from February 19 until March 20. The exhibition will be opened by Prof. Mandy Martin. This is the culmination of Tanja’s studio work over 12 months, with professional development provided by mentors and Committee members. President Prue Acton said "We are thrilled with the body of work that Tanja has produced during her Scholarship year; the work evokes the beauty of the natural world that we

The Far South Coast National Show held at Bega Showground on February 19, 20 & 21 is a traditional country show with something for everyone. Horse events return again in 2010 with lots of showjumping, riding and led events and the Supreme Saddle Horse. A wide range of livestock will also be on show including different cattle breeds, poultry, alpacas and goats. The Pavilion exhibits will include favourites like vegetables, fruit, flowers, cakes, jams, home brewing, art & craft, needlecraft and photography. Concentrate your efforts around shallow sand flats on a rising tide. Anglers fishing surface lures this month will also have loads of fun with bream and whiting the predominate species encountered. All estuaries along the coast will produce the goods, with Wagonga Inlet, Merimbula, Bermagui and Wonboyn Lakes being the pick of them. Offshore: With the water temperature anywhere from 21-24 degrees the pelagic action will be in full swing. Marlins have been around in good numbers and this will continue through February. Trolling skirted lures and slow trolling live baits like striped tuna and slimy mackerel are the gun methods at present. There’s still been sporadic captures of yellowfin tuna to 40kg too, so live baiting and cubing down a burley trail could pay dividends. Inshore, snapper, morwong, flathead, and long finned perch will be available on most South Coast reefs. Expect a few kingfish around also with jigs and live bait the best way to tempt them. Montague Island just of Narooma has been fishing well for the kingies as has the reefs out the front of Moruya and Mowarrie Point south of Eden. Rocks: Salmon, rat kingfish and bonito are all on the cards with lures, whole pilchards and live baiting the best methods. Almost any deeper headland will hold fish with the better ledges being Tura Head, Tathra Head, Nelsons and the rocks at Mystery Bay just south of Narooma. Sporadic catches of blackfish, drummer and groper can be expected in the washes with burley a key ingredient for consistent results. Short Point near Merimbula is a great starting point for the bread and butter species. Beaches: All species will be chewing on the beaches with bream, whiting, salmon and mulloway targeted by most anglers. Fresh bait is best for bream and live beach worms the number one pick for whiting. Pilchards, fresh squid and bluebait are great baits for salmon and mulloway. Some big gummy sharks have been caught too with anglers fishing low light periods getting best results. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutter close to shore and hang on. Beaches that are worth a look are North Tura, Gillard’s, Cuttagee, and Brou beach to the north of Narooma. Tight lines all to next month. Stuart Hindson

Wallaga Lake - Cuttagee Beach Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River. Try out the 18-hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls. Test your riding skills at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park. Go bush walking, take a guided walk or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests. Take a guided tour of the Montreal Goldfield and learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s. Drive south to taste local wines and enjoy a meal at the Mimosa Drystone Restaurant. There is a range of accommodation in Bermagui including B&Bs, motels, tourist/caravan parks, self-contained holiday units and houses and camping. The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel offers fine food, beverages and

accommodation in truly spectacular location overlooking Horseshoe Bay. Bermagui is undergoing something of a building boom, with the new $3.5m Fisherman's Co-op opening in December. This magnificent building, designed by architect Phillip Cox, features timber in its construction, including white stringybark poles that were harvested locally. After receiving almost $1m in funding from the Federal Government, it is hoped that the club rooms of the Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club at Horseshoe Bay will be completed by mid-2010. Bermagui is a fantastic place to base yourself when on holiday. After you've finished exploring all the things to do around town, it's only a short drive to Foxglove Gardens at Tilba Tilba, and the historic village Central Tilba. Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the

tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production. The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Music, magic, poetry and laughs at the Cobargo Folk Festival When a group of local performers organised the first Cobargo Folk Festival back in 1996, few of them expected it to still be going strong 15 years later. The Festival planned for 2010 is small enough to be personal and preserve the traditional elements of folk music in Australia. But at Cobargo, ‘folk’ is loosely interpreted to include a wide range of music, comedy, poetry, multicultural dance and elements of jazz, blues, bluegrass and country. A total of eight venues will provide continuous entertainment over the weekend, with some starting on Friday afternoon.

This year's line up of talent includes the irreverent and shameless Mic Conway in a circus of comedy, magic and music accompanied by Robbie Long, the current Australian Flat Pick Guitar Champion, Margret RoadKnight, a legend in the folk and jazz world both here and overseas, and a reunion of the famous Department of Bluegrass band. The ‘Crossing’ will again be a venue dedicated to performances and workshops for young people, providing an opportunity for all to learn sound and stagecraft, songwriting and to improve their musical skills. The Cobargo Folk Festival is run entirely by volunteers from the Yuin Folk Club Inc, club members and the local community. THE ROSE - ETERNAL BEAUTY Of all the flowers to be found in gardens throughout the world, the rose is the most popular and widely grown. Roses are to be found in just about every country, even where the climate is less than ideal. The beauty of a rose may vary from one variety to the next, whether it is in the form or shape of the bloom, the individual colour and fragrance, the interesting and beautiful hips that some varieties form after flowering or the many shapes and forms that the actual plant can take in its growing habit. The rose is a plant of incredible variety of form of growth from the smallest Miniature Rose of just 15cm in height to the vast climbers of 13 or 15 metres in height and every size in between those two extremes. Its foliage may be dark green and polished as in the large flowering Hybrid Teas or may be matt grey-green as in the Alba Roses. The foliage shapes are as diverse as the flower types, with small fern-like leaves in some of the species types to the excessively large foliage of other groups. There are roses for just about every purpose and position in the garden whatever size this may be. Roses may be short and compact, making them

suitable for formal bedding, they may be shrub roses, small or large for border plantings or they may be used on a trellis or pergola to provide screening or shade. Consider an area that is paved and you have had trouble in beautifying - then why not a selection of roses in pots. Roses are an ideal potted plant and from the many types available a suitable collection of roses could be gathered to make a very interesting display. Climatic conditions play a major role in the selection of the rose you are looking for to fill that certain purpose in your garden. Seaside gardens with excessive winds and high humidity will favour the Rugosa varieties. Colder areas with less humidity and therefore a reduced chance of disease like Black Spot and Powdery Mildew, favour Hybrid Teas and Floribunda varieties. Apart from the actual locality in which you are going to plant your roses, two of the most important factors in the purchase and planting of your roses are where you actually purchase your roses from and the soil preparation you need to carry out prior to planting. The soil preparation is extremely important and it is essential that you ask your nursery

Tilba Tilba - Central Tilba The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery, a pub and famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia; the bridge celebrated its 50th birthday in 2006. Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.
