August Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast this August - the last month of winter, and what a winter it's been! Plenty of frosts, plenty of snow, but also very welcome, plenty of those spectacular still, sunny south coast days where you can garden in a t-shirt for a few hours - heaven! Lots to do this month as usual, whether it's exploring historic villages, cruising our Art Trail or checking out the many National Parks. If you're in need of a laugh, Footprint Theatre are performing an hilarious play titled "Crèche and Burn"; anyone who has experienced child care centres will no doubt relate to the plight of the long-suffering staff. There's more information about "Crèche and Burn" on page 9. Potoroo Palace has a new addition to the family - a beautiful baby koala who, like all babies, is growing in leaps and bounds and becoming more adventurous. Potoroo Palace is just 10 minutes north of Merimbula, so make

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. In 2011, the Eden Whale Festival is being held over the weekend of 29th 30th October - don't miss it!

Eden Killer Whale Museum celebrates its 80th anniversary On 17 September 1930, while on his daily walk, Allie Greig discovered the body of the killer whale known as Tom. This single event was the impetus behind establishing a museum in Eden a place to commemorate the intriguing natural story of the equal working relationship between the whalers and killer whales of Twofold Bay. Tom’s body was processed across the bay at Davidson Whaling Station on the shores of Kiah Inlet. Local entrepreneur John R Logan drove the vision, and in February the following year sought out a committee to begin the project of establishing a home for the skeleton of Tom.

The building was eventually completed in 1938 with Tom being installed early in 1939. In the interim, visitors to Eden were able to see the great orca skeleton in the private offices of Logan which were located close to the main business area of Imlay Street. Unfortunately Logan passed away late 1937, never seeing his dream realised. The museum building is now an iconic centrepiece overlooking the sapphire waters of Twofold Bay and has recently been recognised as holding collections of local, national and international significance. This year Eden Killer Whale Museum has a full programme of events planned to celebrate its 80th anniversary

of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late 19th century. However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. One of these buildings is the former home of Syms Covington, assistant to

the great naturalist, Charles Darwin, on the second voyage of The Beagle in the 1830s. He became postmaster of Pambula in 1854, but remained in contact with the renowned scientist, sending a box of Twofold Bay barnacles to help in Darwin’s research. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Laughs aplenty from Footprint Theatre Footprint Theatre offers a great night out for the grown-ups with its latest production "CRÈCHE AND BURN" from 19 - 27 August at Club Sapphire in Merimbula. Written by Elise Greig and directed by Wilma Donovan, this situation comedy with heart is set in a childcare centre but it's not child's play! Sarah is a newly trained childcare worker, it’s her first day on the job at Little Acorn Crèche and she’s as keen as mustard. The other staff call in sick, leaving Sarah alone to deal with the children who just want to wee on each other, have food fights and set fire to the place. Then there’s the parents, a motley crew of single mothers, career women, stay-at-home mums, the grandmother who thinks the childcare centre is the equivalent of a dog kennel, the biker mum who believes breastfeeding is an act of cannibalism and a Community Service Woman who's off the planet. Things couldn’t be worse. Enter Robert, the weekend father. He’s a gentle guy who just wants to spend quality time with his daughter, but somehow ends up taking the childcare centre hostage. Merimbula Marina Celebrates Whales National Whale Day was launched in 2008 by IFAW as an opportunity to celebrate Australia’s unique relationship with whales as they travel 10,000 kms up and down our coasts on their annual migration route. Whilst many whales have already been sighted off Merimbula this season, the best time for whale sightings on the South Coast is from September to the end of November. For National Whale Day 2011, Merimbula Marina is launching a new Annual Whale Watching Pass and a Photo Competition. The $350 Annual Pass will enable the holder to enjoy as many whale watching cruises as they like during the season. To celebrate the launch of the Pass, which is sure to be highly popular amongst avid whale watchers, one will be given away for free. Merimbula Marina's Photo Competition is open to anyone who takes a photo of a whale during the 2011 season, with first prize an Annual Whale Watching Pass for 2012. Potoroo Palace welcomes a new baby koala When Blinky arrived at Potoroo Palace in March 2010, the staff became very hopeful that he would mate with Suzie, our resident koala. Night cameras revealed that the relationship had many ups and downs. The staff were unsure as to whether consummation had occurred. The first sign was industrious cleaning of her pouch by Suzie. Soon some movement was noticed. Did she have indigestion? Was there something amiss in her gut? Excitement was intense. About mid May a paw was seen coming out of the pouch, followed by a curious little face two weeks later. The new baby has continued to show curiosity about everything in her surroundings. In mid June baby was seen eating a yucky substance which was pap, produced by her mother to start digestive processes which would later be needed for the absorption of nutrients from eucalyptus leaves. As time went on baby was seen climbing all over Suzie with very little fear, and reaching for gum leaves. Tathra With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale migrating south from September to November.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for

swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

Enjoy bushwalking in the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve. This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy black-

cockatoos, listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees. The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds,

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. A new retail complex is under construction in the middle of town

Monthly Garden Advice Food For Thought With the rising cost of fruit and vegetables, thought should be given to planting trees and shrubs that will provide food for the table and some added visual pleasure to the garden. Wherever you live, consideration should be given to including edible plants in the garden. Consider the enormous range of plants that are sold in nurseries from common vegetables, berries and fruits through to unusual Australian native fruits. Even the smallest garden can afford

to have a few edible plants. There has been a great improvement in the last couple of years with new dwarf growing vegetables that are suitable for pot culture. Any small sunny spot in the garden or on a veranda can accommodate a pot that can grow a tomato, some mixed salad vegetables or a dwarf fruit tree or shrub. Fruit trees can be planted as ornamentals as well as supplying the gardener with a delicious yield. Many fruit trees are deciduous providing

shade in summer and sun in winter with flowers in the spring. Small berry shrubs can be planted in sunny spots instead of ornamental shrubs, and many of the fruiting vines can be grown against fences, trellises or walls. To successfully grow vegetables, herbs or other edible plants the three essentials are good soil, sun and good drainage. Fruits and vegetables that have to struggle against the elements are tough and not as sweet and tasty as ones that have optimum growing conditions. Vegetables sheltered from winds will increase their yield by up to 50 per cent. Talk to your local nursery person if you are a newcomer to growing edible plants and they will give you some handy hints for successful gardening. August is a great time to check out your local nursery along the coast as a large range of food plants are available and can be planted in the warmer regions of the coast. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area. The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent

Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leatherwork, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. The famous Tilba Festival is held every Easter, and is a huge community event. Previous Festivals have included

hilarious street games like gum-boot throwing and cheese-rolling, town criers, live music, roaming performers and circus workshops. The fantastic range of activities and entertainment to suit all the family makes the Tilba Festival an event worth returning for. Mystery Bay, just to the east of Central Tilba, has quiet beaches that are great for swimming, diving, snorkelling and fishing.

Moruya The township of Moruya has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.
