April Welcome to April on the coast, and what a beautiful time autumn is. The rain has been creating a bit of havoc with Brown Mountain closed due to road damage. If you're travelling down Mt Darragh or the Kings Highway to get to the coast, do take care - there's a lot of extra traffic on the road. It's worth it to get here though there's heaps of festivals and events happening this Easter. Long-running festivals include the 28th Tilba Easter Festival, held on Easter Saturday, and the Four Winds Festival; a biennial event that celebrates its 21st year in 2012. Both of these festivals have their own unique take on community - you'll find more information in our Bermagui and Tilba sections. If you're not sure of what to do on Easter Sunday, there are a couple of options with Magic Mountain in Merimbula holding an Easter Family
Contents Fair, and the Batemans Bay Historical Society running an Open Day at the Old Courthouse Museum. Details on pages 13 and 39. Merimbula's centenary celebrations continue over the Easter weekend you'll find a list of events on page 15. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

A new photographic exhibition at the Museum shows maritime archaeologists at work on two rewarding expeditions off the Queensland coast two years ago. In partnership with the Silentworld Foundation, Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) divers found the remains of HM Colonial Schooner Mermaid on the Great Barrier Reef in January 2009 and investigated other wreck sites on Wreck Reefs in the Coral Sea in December. This ANMM travelling exhibition, titled Wrecks, reef and the Mermaid, includes stunning underwater photographs and a short video, all by Xanthe Rivett, of the dive team in action and their coralencrusted finds. The 21.4 metre (70-foot) Mermaid ran aground off the Frankland Islands, some 40 km south-east of Cairns, in 1829. Attempting a short-cut through the Great Barrier Reef and ignoring advice from more experienced officers aboard, the captain ran the schooner onto an unidentified reef where it became a total wreck. In December 2009 the ANMM/ Silentworld team headed 450 km offshore to Wreck Reefs in the Coral Sea, where divers took just 4 days to locate and survey the remains of two vessels
closely associated with Matthew Flinders. HMS Porpoise, a 10-gun Royal Navy sloop, with Flinders on board as a passenger, was travelling in convoy through the relatively unexplored waters of the Coral Sea when it struck an isolated and unchartered reef. Porpoise immediately fired a cannon to warn two following vessels – Cato, an armed cargo ship, and Bridgewater, an East India Company cargo ship. Cato and Bridgewater both changed course, but towards each other. Cato too struck the reef, just two cable lengths (370 metres) from Porpoise. Bridgewater ignominiously continued on its way to India, with no heed for the plight of the

Pambula The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830's, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site. Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic

buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos. Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent
swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families. Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June. Baby Koala Sapphire at Potoroo Palace Potoroo Palace Native Animal Sanctuary's baby Koala received her official name recently. The raffle for the naming rights had been running across the region for months, and at a much-anticipated celebration, local motel owner Sue Wilson's name was drawn. She promptly gave the prize to her cleaner, Judy Waiting, who, after lunch with friends, decided on a name. Meet Sapphire. The Sanctuary's cutest baby is just leaving the rambunctious stage - crawling on mum's head, chasing the boots of keepers and grabbing them, running up trees and leaping back down. "It's because she was still on mum's milk," says Head Zookeeper Karen Johnson. "Once she converts to gum leaves it'll be all snoozeville.” The Sanctuary has three baby emus, too. Found by a local forester, they were hatched and midwifed by one of the keepers, and are growing fast. They’re already more than knee-high to most things, and are consummate goofballs – running, somersaulting, dancing under the sprinkler; typical Aussie kids, having fun and growing fast. From echidnas to wombats, dingoes, kangaroos, cockatoos, possums, Potoroo has most things Australian (including a Hills Hoist about behind the feed shed). Merimbula Celebrates its Centenary with 10 days of events On March 27th this year Merimbula celebrates the 100th anniversary of its gazettal as a Township. The gazettal was a cause for celebration, as even though the area had been actively occupied by a number of families for a time previously, Merimbula was at last properly recognised as a Town. A wide range of events have been planed to celebrate Merimbula's 100th birthday - here's a sample of some of the things happening over late March and April.
Tuesday 27th March 12.30pm The Celebrations will be launched with a luncheon at Club Sapphire, Merimbula, at which former Australian Test Cricketer and educator, Paul Sheahan (courtesy of Rex Airlines), will be guest speaker. Paul will officially start the celebrations. His address will be followed by the launch by local identity Chappie Munn of a Pictorial History that has been commissioned by the Merimbula– Imlay Historical Society. A birthday cake will be cut by the oldest living Merimbula born resident Mary (Posey) Gray. The Launch will also feature a choir of 100 voices singing the Centenary Anthem.
Friday 30th March Friday night The Merimbula Special Events Committee will host a Centenary Ball at the Merimbula RSL Club. Music will be provided by the Royal Military College Duntroon Big Band, one of the nation’s best known group of musicians. Tickets for the Ball can be purchased at the RSL.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, and passing whales, heading south on their migration, are frequently seen from September to November.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountainbiking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club. An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra Mountain Bike Enduro is back in 2012 Mountain biking on the Far South Coast steps up a gear in April, with the Tathra Mountain Bike Enduro running over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd. Characterised by unparalleled coastal scenery, sweeping single track and some gut wrenching climbs, the Tathra Enduro will again showcase the best coastal and wilderness mountain bike (MTB) trails – incorporating the Mimosa Rocks National Park, the Tanja State Forest and the Tathra Doolagharl single track. The Tathra MTB Enduro will feature five events across the weekend. On Saturday there's a 10km timed prologue and two children's races ; a 1 - 2 lap race for little ones, plus a 3km race for under 14s. Sunday is the big day with the King Nelba 100km, Goat’s Knob 50km and the Doolagharl 20km races. In 2012, the event is again pedalling
a strong community cause, with all profits from the Enduro going towards renewable energy projects, and the development of sustainable mountain bike trails in the region. Funds raised from the 2011 Enduro provided solar panels for the Bega Aboriginal Land Council and the Uniting Church, and a wind turbine for the Tathra Surf Club. Event organiser Jake Iskov announced some minor changes to events from last year's Enduro. “The King Nelba 100km will be as challenging as ever, but we will be streamlining the course to take the sting from the tail of the event" Iskov announced. “There are also some surprises in store in the Goat’s Knob 50km – but you will have to wait and see what they are,” teased Iskov. Iskov said the staging of the event on the last weekend of the NSW
Easter school holidays was aimed at encouraging families to visit the coastal town. “Tathra is famous for its sun and surf – now we’ve added the single track – which makes it the ideal family getaway.” Entries are open for the marathon King Nelba 100km and the epic Goat’s Knob via www.mountainbiking.com.au. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.
A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900's, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region. Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery. The new Sapphire Marketplace complex has opened after a 15 month construction phase, bringing nationally
recognised retail outlets to Bega. Housing the largest Big W outside of Sydney, the complex represents a huge change to Bega's retail landscape.

Step back in time at the Bega Pioneers Museum A fantastic place to learn about Bega's history is the Bega Pioneers Museum, on the Corner of Auckland and Bega Streets. Housing the largest collection of framed photographs of pioneers in NSW, even the building which houses the Museum is classified (it was built in 1858-9 and operated as a hotel). The Pioneers' Museum has many rooms and outside exhibition areas containing pieces from every aspect of early Bega - industries, clothing, military, machinery, transport, household effects, as well as family histories. Four Winds Festival celebrates its 21st year this Easter Beginning back in the early 90s by a group of friends passionate about music and Bermagui's beautiful environment, the Four Winds Festival is now recognised as one of Australia's best music festivals. The Four Winds Festival is held every second Easter in the very beautiful Four Winds outdoor amphitheatre, nine kilometres south of Bermagui. In the fifteen festivals held since 1991, Four Winds has offered its audiences the opportunity to hear some of the best Australian and international musicians playing fine classical and contemporary works, in programs drawn from a wide diversity of musical and cultural traditions. The festivals have established a reputation for excellence in music that is enhanced by being performed in a magical site, where artists, winds, birds,
even on occasion a Four Winds frog, all contribute to the proceedings. Not surprisingly, in 2011 Four Winds was named Winner of the APRA/ AMC Australian Art Music Award for Excellence in a Regional Location. In 2012 the Festival achieved a significant milestone with the completion of is permanent Sound Shell. This is however only stage one of the plan to develop the site as Nature's Concert Hall, with a $1.67m grant from the Federal Government to construct the Shed – a cultural facility that can be used by all the community. Referring to the 2012 program, Artistic Director Genevieve Lacey said "What you’ll hear over our Festival weekend is almost all exclusive to Four Winds. By joining us, you’ll be present at multiple world premieres, you’ll discover new works, new artists, new instruments
and new ensembles. You’ll hear music you know and love, often in different guises. And you’ll hear an utterly inspiring cast of musicians in the most glorious outdoor setting you can imagine. This weekend is a celebration of this exquisite place and the remarkable community of people who gather here." Events will be held from Friday 6th - Sunday 8th April at different locations in Bermagui, including the free Opening Ceremony on Dickinson Oval at 5.30pm on Friday, and at the Four Winds site. The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a virtually intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea. A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This, however, provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the full Montreal story; a story of an unsolved mystery, history and fascinating anecdotes. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors to wander through the
beautiful forest and tree ferns. The track itself is approximately 200m long and most is wheel chair accessible, and there are plenty of strategically located benches along the track. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm and take around 1 ¼ hours, and toilet facilities are available. If you have a group of more than 12, contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, Allocasuarina paludosa, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheesemaking industries. The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation. Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s. Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source
of income for the area. The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for crafts people and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Shops with leather work, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and gift ware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located
on Central Tilba’s main street. The village of Tilba Tilba, just two kilometers down the road from Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing. Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, gift ware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

Monthly Garden Advice Autumn - So Beautiful Well, here we are, well and truly into the most wonderful of the seasons, and what better place could there be than on our beautiful far South Coast. Whether you are reading this column as a local or a visitor, now is the time to really think gardening. The rainfall has been plentiful, if not at times a bit much, but the conditions at the moment are perfect for gardening. There are a number of projects that can be carried out now, including the cutting back of summer flowering perennials to tidy them up and encourage a late flush of growth and flowers. The removal of spent flower heads on roses will also encourage a late show of blooms. In our milder climate, autumn is a great time to choose a new citrus tree. Citrus come in many varieties and most will be grafted onto either a regular growing
root stock or dwarfing root stock. A number of growers are reverting back to growing citrus on their own roots, but this can be fraught with problems. Grafted trees will be more resistant to pests and diseases, will fruit quicker from the time of planting, be stronger and more vigorous, will fruit true to type and come in a wider range of interesting varieties. Autumn is the right time to fertilise all citrus trees, and the process should be carried out a minimum of two or three times during the season with a specific fertiliser for citrus. The next fertiliser application would then be a similar process in spring. Late March and April and even into May is the time to sow Sweet Peas. If you live in a cooler zone there is no problem in leaving the sowing until early spring.
Sweet Peas like a sunny well drained position with a suitable support or netting and if possible an east west position. Before sowing the seed, fork in some organic manure and a small amount of lime. This will get the plants off to a great start, and it won't be long before you are filling vases with the heavenly fragrance of these most beautiful cut flowers. Many nurseries will now have a supply of spring bulbs for sale and these should be planted soon. Enjoy the season.

The Bay Theatre Players on a Slow Boat with China As may be guessed from the title, ‘"We Found Love And An Exquisite Set Of Porcelain Figurines Aboard The SS Farndale Avenue", the opening show for the Bay Theatre Players 2012 season is a comedy. However, the SS Farndale Avenue sails blithely on despite missing props and dropped cues, food poisoning, a sinking vessel, an underwater sequence with lobster (don’t ask), and a sub text of broken china. Easter Fun at the Old Courthouse Museum On Easter Sunday, April 8th, the Old Courthouse Museum in Batemans Bay is holding its popular Open Day, and with free entry it’s a great chance to visit and enjoy the full range of activities for the whole family. A highlight for horse lovers will be Cobb and Co. stagecoach rides, with coaches drawn by handsome Clydesdale horses. The Bay Fire Brigade will have its latest model and an antique truck on display - emergencies permitting! There will be working antique machinery and tractors from the Moruya Antique Tractor & Farm Machinery Association,
and of course there's the Courthouse Museum’s own expansive displays of period costume, crime and punishment, a doll collection, Timber Tales, gold stories in the original police cell and more. Market stalls will be offering art, craft and pre-loved goodies. The BBQ will be cooking up a storm as well as Judy’s famous Devonshire Tea. The Museum is located off Orient St next to the Water Gardens, and has plenty of free parking. The Open Day runs from 9.30am -3pm.
