soul settings: triptych 1 is one third of an experiment exploring the idea of deriving multiple forms from one large structure. Six companion poems selected from Sin Eater by William Reichard are set spoken-word style to music in a manner that accounts for an inference not only of one 6 movement piece, but also of two shorter, 3 movement pieces that share an obvious parallel relationship: soul settings 1. the soul in paradise (II) 2. the soul in paradise (II) 3. the soul in limbo 4. the soul in purgatory 5. the soul in hell (I) 6. the soul in hell (II) is divided to create: soul settings: triptych 1 1.1 the soul in paradise (I) 2.3 the soul in limbo 3.6 the soul in hell (II) - AND soul settings: triptych 2 1.2 the soul in paradise (II) 2.4 the soul in purgatory 3.5 the soul in hell (I) When either of the two smaller triptychs are performed, the intention is to convey one of two unique “takes” like two different composers setting two different poets who have interpreted the same subject matter, and when all six settings are performed in toto, a hybrid song-cycle/ rondo-type macroform results.

The poems’ individual imagery of the soul in stasis, but collective imagery of the soul’s location in different places, also provides an impetus for writing music that reflects a sense of environment and mood through the utilization of spatial effects and optional theatrics.

Instrumentation flute (doubling on piccolo), Oboe, B-flat Clarinet (doubling on Bass Clarinet),Violin & Cello Performance notes 1. Ensemble members double as speakers, reciting text where/as designated.

2. A podium or stand for the speaker should be placed downstage right center. The ensemble should be arranged in a wide arc angle center stage.

3. Amplification for the speaker is highly recommended, especially for larger venues. In situations where a mic is not available, dynamics and mute indications MUST be adjusted so the speaker is still clearly heard with/over the ensemble. Because the clarinetist is required to alternate between playing and speaking for 3.6 the soul in hell (II), if amplification is used, steps should be taken to ensure as much as possible that instrumental passages are NOT ALSO amplified.

4. For movement 1.1. the soul in paradise (I) and movement 3.6. the soul in hell (II), the use of spatialization effects are encouraged. Footnotes suggesting the most flexible approach/setup are provided at relevant points in the score. Ensembles are free to use these as a starting point making alterations according to what best exploits the occasion, venue, etc.

Notation of text: 1. The text is set against/with the music in one of three ways: a. Freely: An upward facing arrowhead (^) above a rest will point to the word or syllable of a given phrase to indicate where it should fall in relation to the music. The phrase is to be otherwise spoken freely, at a reasonable pace and within the natural rhythm and cadence of the speaker's voice. b. Rhythmic: A rhythm is specified either completely (down to the syllable), for each word, or for the important stresses of a given phrase or segment. An indication of "in strict time" accompanies segments where syncopation is particularly important. Specified rhythms without the "in strict time" designation should be approached with a small degree of flexibility. The important thing is for recitation to NOT sound too mechanical unless clearly indicated otherwise. Overall, rhythm indications are designed to come across as having been determined by the natural rhythms of the words spoken freely, with the music then composed to follow or compliment rather than lead. c. Locational: Rhythmic indications displayed in parentheses are provided for portions of the text that must fit (begin and end) within a specific duration - where pace rather than rhythm is important. Instances may encapsulate entire phrases or portions of a phrase. Instances where a single word or even a single syllable is in parentheses, particularly at the end of a rhythmic phrase, specify that the rhythmic placement may be allowed to fall away or out of rhythm slightly.

2. CAPITALIZED words or syllables in freely spoken sections indicate important vocal stresses.

3. Accents (<) in rhythmic sections indicate the composer's take on natural vocal stresses should fall.

4. A question mark in parentheses at the end of a phrase or sentence (?) indicates that an upward lilt in pronunciation should be used to create a sense of continuation, as if asking a question.

5. Asterisks (*) mark sex/gender specific words in the text that should be changed as needed, as appropriate to the speaker's sex/gender.

My particular paradise is solitude, so pray, let me find a room with no windows, no doors; a chair with three legs; a telephone without a cord.

Let me find a table laden with the Holy Leftovers of the Last Supper, Christ's cup tipped, a few drops of wine left to lick from the thick, coarse tabletop, some bread, some salt, a vinegar-soaked rag.

The experts now tell us that the souls of unbaptized babies do not dwell forever away from the presence of God, because who would be so arbitrary?

This is fine for the sinless dead, but for the rest of us the wait is long.

There's nothing here to comment on.

No light to see nor dark to mask.

Not asleep, not awake, only eyes that are always and never closed.

There is proficiency in everything, brilliance in nothing.

There is good but second-rate art; singers with mediocre voices; harps without angels or strings.

You learn early to let go of expectations. Everyone here gets only what's needed, never what's wanted; just like a Marxist paradise: good in theory but in practice far from perfect.

We get second-run movies and syndicated TV shows and ads for products banned years ago.

All of us long for the good old days of clarity, schedules, and rules.

We're always hungry, always full.

We do not kill, yet always hang.

We go out only when there's nothing to do, when the shops are closed, on those nights when the stars are not shining, the theater's blacked out, and there's barely a sliver of moon.

They come, at last, to take me. I've done my best to hide, but they see through my human disguise.

We face a long set of stairs. I walk slow, deliberate, like a man on his way to the gallows.

It seems there is no hell, only what the mind creates, and my imagination is tired. It's all that's been holding them back. At the top of the stairs is a plane we'll board, so quiet and orderly I'd tried to board it once before but was turning away the seats are assigned. Every angel has one.

Mine is at the back, close to the toilets, away from the heavenly hosts. I must board last, but I've nothing left to check, no bag for the overhead bin. Our belief in gravity holds us to the ground, but here the rules don't apply. I strap myself in so I won't float away.

The propeller starts to spin. The pilots says it's time. I brace myself for takeoff.

The horizon is endless once we're in the air, like it was when I was a boy staring out into immeasurable fields. How small I felt then, sure I could never cross such a distance.

Now I move on to new territories, fields of perfect rows that crosshatch one another forever. Such a strange word: forever.

Like a gift or a curse. A promise made to a frightened child when he asks his mother, How long wi! I live?

He thinks I wanted to be a martyr, but I don't.

He thinks there must be a system of rewards and punishments, where one earns the right to suffer. But there's not. The angels here aren't terrifying, only angry. They can't have souls, so they beat us up with their sharp wings, throw us off the tops of clouds and skyscrapers.

They watch us scream all the way down, and when we recover they start again.

In my paradise, everything is equal but nothing's fair. We're cursed to count every shade of white.

In my paradise, chaos isn't a dirty word.

He may try to get there, but he can't.

I've learned the trick of starving myself until my body's so thin it can pass through a wall's molecules.

This is something he cannot learn.

Inside my room, utterly silent, I'll come to know nothing.

This will take me years.

He'll pound and pound on the walls. but I'll hear nothing. Only the ruffle of sinister angel wings, and the sound of my blood as it rushes through my heart, my hands, my head.
