SNDCONNECTS is our way of lending partnership and programming support to NGOs, non-profits, open-source projects, and academic institutions. We help create innovation experiences, and provide skills training for design and product teams. Together, our team will work with yours to create a customized event designed to help you go an inch wide and a mile deep toward solving a tightly defined problem or exploring a new idea.

SNDMAKES is a design-sprint series for

training program created for those interested in learning the basics of responsive web design and data visualization. These intense, two-day hands-on camps are available to university students and professionals alike. Sponsored by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation and the Scripps Howard Foundation, Camp SND is free to attend, but only available for SND members. Course size is limited to ensure meaningful, and personalized instruction. The courses are directed by expert trainers Chris Courtney of Bloc; consultant Kurt Cunningham; Yuri Victor of Vox Media; and Joey Marburger of the Washington Post.

SNDConnects is made possible by generous funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and is free of charge to participating organizations. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis, and programs will be held from now until December 2016. the news and information design community, and colleagues. Over 2.5 days, these boutique, rapid-prototyping events use the principles of design-thinking to create solutions for modern news and media companies. SNDMakes events are focused community, not competition so we do not describe them as “hackathons” per se, even though past participants have said “SNDMakes is a hackathon for smart people”… LOL. While we rapidly develop prototypes of ideas, participants don’t necessarily need code-writing skills to make meaningful contributions to a team. Above all else, we look for a passion for media, innovation and a desire to collaborate.

Your choice: Presenting the 2017 SND officer candidates We’re pleased to introduce you to this year’s candidates for the 2016 SND offices of secretary-treasurer, vice president and president. ÑH competition expands to Latin America

T

he ÑH competition, the most prestigious newspaper competition in Spain and Portugal, is expanding in 2016 to Latin America, becoming an intercontinental affair. With this change the ÑH expects to become bigger and stronger than ever. Organized by SND-Espana, ÑH rewards the best in journalism and design. The expansion of this edition brings with it a few other changes, including new categories and the inclusion of PDF entries in place of tearsheets. Javier Errea of SND-E has worked in collaboration with Region 12 director Gustavo Lo Valvo, International Director Cristobal Edwards, and Marcela Madrid in Colombia to coordinate the expansion. The city of Medellin, Colombia, will serve as the capital of ÑH in Latin America, and play host to a special seminar in November centered around the awards.

Amid post-coup crackdown, SND members detained SINCE 2004 EACH CALL HAS INCREASED THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS, DEMONSTRATING THE INTEREST OF THE MEDIA AND REAFFIRMING THE CONVICTION THAT A CONTEST LIKE ÑH WAS NECESSARY TO SHOW THE BEST IN NEWS DESIGN IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL.

he failed coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July left more than 270 people dead and resulted in a government crackdown against journalists, among others. Erdogan, with dictatorial aspirations, has abolished press freedoms and specifically targeted journalists at Zaman, the leading news organization in Turkey and home to a phenomenal team of visual journalists. The government seized control of Zaman in March, alleging the newspaper had ties to a U.S.-based Muslim cleric it now blames for the coup attempt. Erdogon has vowed to “eradicate” supporters of the cleric and the coup. Last week, arrest warrants went out for 47 former executives or senior journalists of Zaman. Among them, former design director Fevzi Yazici (shown in the featured image out front), former editor-in-chief Bülent Keneş, former editor Süleyman Sargin.

WHAT I’M READING NOW...

by Helen Armstrong Price: $15.59

Digital Design Theory bridges the gap between the discourse of print design and interactive experience by examining the impact of computation on the field of design. As graphic design moves from the creation of closed, static objects to the development of open, interactive frameworks, designers seek to understand their own rapidly shifting profession. Helen Armstrong’s carefully curated introduction to groundbreaking primary texts, from the 1960s to the present, provides the background necessary for an understanding of digital design vocabulary and thought.

Too often a design or architecture degree is seen as a means to an end (a job in an established practice). But imagine for one moment that there are no employers, no firms to send your resumé to, no interviews to be had—what would you do? How would you forge your own path after graduation? The current economic climate has seen many graduates chasing a finite number of positions. The most ingenious and driven designers have found weird and wonderful ways of making opportunities for themselves, often by applying their skills across the creative disciplines of art, design, architecture, and interiors. Knowing what you want from your design career and being able to adapt your strategy to suit is basic and vital—just like in the wild, designers need to evolve.

It is considered to have begun in the 1950’s, but it has just recently started to become accessible to the public with all the technological developments. Recently The New York Times earned Best in Show at the SND Creative competition for its coverage “The Displaced”. It is a series of stories highlighting the plight of refugee children around the globe using VR technology as a storyteller. Robert Hernandez, expert in VR journalism, shares his thoughts about this technology being applied for real in the newsroom.

VIRTUAL REALITY l Do you believe the popularity of Virtual Reality is here to stay?

Robert Hernandez is a Digital Journalism professor at USC Annenberg that, with his students, produced VR Journalism experiences under the brand Jovrnalism for more than a year. Their work has generated more than 160,000 page views and is currently working on an immersive experience for ProPublica and the Texas Tribune.

VIRTUAL REALITY AS A STORYTELLER IN JOURNALISM IS IT FOR REAL?

There is a long history of Virtual Reality over promising and being over hyped, and the truth is there is certainly hype around the current version of VR.... that said, this is quite different from the past. The technology is real and being rolled out now. And while I don’t expect this to be mainstream right away, VR is here and will only grow, especially in the content side. l How prevalent is the use of VR in the newsrooms in America? Most newsrooms are cautious as they dip their toe in the VR water, but more and more are exploring this space. Obviously leading the charge is the NYTimes, which gave their subscribers Google Cardboard viewers and launched their NYT VR app. They have partnered up with VR studios and producers to create their different 360-video based experiences. The Washington Post has partnered up and launched a couple experiences. FRONTLINE was awarded a Knight grant and has worked on several experiences. NBC Owned Television Stations have started shipping Ricoh Thetas to their stations, which represent the most common exploratory approach. Different approaches, but more are coming in. A pattern I am currently seeing is that everyone is focusing on 360-video, which is the easiest way to get into immersive VR but not many have gone into the deeper CGI/3D Unity/Unreal ap-

models and plugins to produce true VR Journalism experiences.

l What are the required tools for the newsroom to start producing VR?

This is all new and being explored. Every week more VR experiences are being published and each one trying new UI/UX approaches to help tell an immersive story. There is no standard or best practices. That’s incredibly exciting and ripe for news designers to explore. Mike Alger recently released a video about VR Interface Design that is truly insightful on how to design for VR: https://vimeo.com/141330081

It all depends on what your goal is, which is directly tied to your organization’s audience. But, in general, an extremely affordable way to start is by getting a low end 360 camera like the Theta or the GIROPTIC camera. While it requires a certain phone, the Samsung Gear 360 is likely the best option for a variety of reasons. Moving up in cost, there are GoPro 360 rigs like the Freedom 360 or 360 Heroes mount, or GoPro’s OMNI rig. To increase the production quality, you can add After Effects or the 360-specific software Skybox by Mettle. But don’t limit yourself to 360 video. Download a personal Unity license for free and start playing. You don’t need to be 3D artist since they have a Unity assets store that can help get

l How can VR help a storyteller in news design?

l Do universities in the US embrace VR? More and more are exploring this space as well. Obviously, I have been teaching a VR Journalism course at my institution, USC Annenberg, for more than a year. Dan Pacheco at Syracuse University has been doing work in this space as well. CUNY is offering workshops and many others at different scales.

The students traveled to Houston over spring break to shoot footage to accompany a ProPublica/ Texas Tribune project on what a hurricane could do to the city.
