welcome to sicamous!

The meeting place of the best BC has to offer. Cool waters and bright sun, river banks and lake shores, waterfalls and forest groves, hospitality and comfort, adventure and relaxation.

Sicamous, where Mara Lake meets Shuswap Lake, is also conveniently located where the Trans Canada Highway meets Highway 97A making it easily accessible from the Okanagan, the Lower Mainland, the Cariboo and Alberta.

We’re also where the valley meets the mountains. With access to Queest, Owlhead, Blue Lake and Eagle Pass mountains nearby. Come winter, we’re the gateway to some of the best sledding in Western Canada.

Affectionately known as The Houseboat Capital of Canada, Sicamous is indeed a boater’s paradise but that’s really only part of the story. Meet us here to learn the rest. It’s guaranteed to put a spring in your step and a smile on your face. We look forward to welcoming you.

sicamous is a way of life weytk, ell tscwmintlmen ne secwépemculecw. hello, and welcome to the land of the secwépemc.

In Sicamous, the energy of nature ignites the energy of the people, regardless of your pace or passion. Here, the tranquil pursuit of hiking and birdwatching recharges some, while wakeboarding and sledding refuel others—each experience is designed to invigorate, inspire, and excite. It's a place where you can explore your adventurous spirit amidst the thrill of the wild and the tranquility of the landscape.

Because in Sicamous, we believe in a life lived with spark.

sek'maws is said to mean the 'waist' or 'in the middle'
to the land & the people

The District of Sicamous respectfully acknowledges that we are on the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwepemc.

The Sicamous area was a primary village site of the Splatsin People and was named Sek’maws, which translates to “the waist”. It was used as a trading hub with neighbouring communities and nations and later, a fur trading business was set up at the Eagle Pass Landing.

Splatsin was known to be peaceful but fierce in times of war, in order to defend the most southern boundary of Secwépemculecw

our history

settlers, steamers & the shuswap

Settlers came to the area with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway as did many a prospector when gold was discovered on the Columbia River.

It was then that Sek'maws, meaning "waist" or "narrowing" became known as Sicamous by the settlers.

Access to the lake made Sicamous a natural port for shipping goods and passengers by paddlewheel steamers to other communities. The CPR built the Sicamous Hotel on the shores of Shuswap Lake reminiscent of the iconic Banff Springs. It was demolished in the mid-sixties.

Sek’maws, on the unceded territory of the Secwépemc has, since time immemorial, been ancestral lands for seasonal fishing and gathering located in close proximity to higher hunting grounds.

At about the same time, the houseboat industry started taking shape. The first versions were best for calm quiet lakes like Mara but evolved to the point where crafts were built to withstand the much bigger and slightly more temperamental, Shuswap Lake. Now the industry has a foothold and has built not only locally but for other lake communities across North America even diversifying into workforce camp construction.

The community continues to thrive and evolve. The once upon a time sleepy off season is now a thing of the past as the community welcomes sledders from across western North America in the late fall, winter and early spring.

The Sicamous & District Visitor Centre welcomes guests from across Canada and the world, highlighting all that the Shuswap has to offer. We are a four-season destination located on the shores of both Mara and Shuswap Lakes, surrounded by four sledding areas—Queest, Owlhead, Blue Lake and Eagle Pass—offering visitors the unique opportunity to snowmobile, golf and boat all in the same day!

The Info on the Go Team is made of local youth who act as community ambassadors and information sources for places to stay, things to do, and where to find a bathroom.

You'll find them biking around town, in the Visitor Centre, or at the Beach Park in the concession booth.

While Sicamous has earned the title of Houseboat Capital of Canada, it also offers many more activities and events throughout the year, providing an unforgettable experience for everyone, from high octane thrills to laidback leisure. Sicamous continues to go full throttle even in the winter and was voted 2017 SledTown ShowDown Champion of Western Canada, was nominated again in 2018 and continues to vie for the title every year.

At the Visitor Centre you will find maps, brochures, a gift shop, printing & scanning services, and specialty maps for purchase. Make it your first stop in town for all you need to know during your stay.

communities in bloom

Sicamous is a 5 Bloom award winning community & winner of 2022 BC Year of the Garden Award!

growing our community one garden at a time

Our motto is “Live More”. We take a unique approach to our gardens, merging landscapes and art into active spaces where we can work, play, or just relax.

The lakes, mountains, forests, and streams of Sicamous serve as a spectacular backdrop for our lovely gardens and public spaces.

Local volunteers have taken an active role in making our downtown public spaces bloom, alongside Sicamous businesses who support and contribute to our aesthetic efforts. We've partnered with the Local Arts Council to include displays throughout our garden projects.

recognizing our rich history

Our gardens also recognize our houseboating and railway history, helping to beautify local landmarks. Keep a look out for blooming sites at the Legion Cenotaph and grounds, the historic Red Barn the Sicamous Beach Park , and the Main Street Landing.

Through our public gardens and art installations, we pay tribute to the Indigenous neighbours and Military Veterans. Visitors and residents alike, will find opportunities for reflection in our Ukrainian Internment Camp memorial gardens

Our family, which includes three kids aged 5, 9, and 13, loves to go outside and enjoy the weather. One of our favorite things to do is head to Sicamous Beach Park on the shores of Shuswap Lake. We often go for easy walks around the Riverfront Nature Park, where we see plants starting to grow and animals waking up from winter. We also like to paddle on the lake, enjoying the quiet water and beautiful mountains around us. --Jason, Kate & Family

On rainy spring days in Sicamous, we visit small, cute shops to look for special items and enjoy hot chocolates at Blondies Coffee Shop, where we also read books or play board games together. When it's not too hot we head to the skate park, playgrounds, go-kart racing or play a round at Lukies mini-golf. Geocaching is another fun treasure hunt we enjoy.

easy trails moderate difficult

Looking for a relaxed or family friendly day on the trail? The modest Sicamous Creek Trail, with it's beautiful waterfall, and River Front Nature Park are excellent routes to explore. Shorter in length and low in elevation.

Work up an appetite with a steeper trail and some worthwhile views. Try The Lizard, a short hike at just 1.6km, or the Old Sicamous Highway for lake views, wildlife & waterfalls.

Hyde Mountain Lookout is a hard trail but a stunner. Larch Hills Traverse, home to an Ultra Run is truly an epic, but memorable challenge. Make sure you plan ahead and prepare accordingly.

snowmobiling

welcome to sled town

Come winter, Sicamous is also be called Sled Town as the four surroundings mountain areas–Owlhead, Queest, Blue Lake and Eagle Pass–offer some of the best alpine sledding in Western Canada.

With both groomed and ungroomed trails to explore, snow-filled bowls, epic powder and breathtaking views, the terrain can be accessed by all skill levels.

What's more, Sicamous businesses have everything it takes to get you geared up, offering a variety of rentals for your mountain adventures. Our friends at sledsicamous.com can set you up with an annual membership and daily passes.

The season fires up towards the end of November, and for the avid sledder can last up to May long weekend. In shoulder season, you could be sledding in the morning and golfing postlunch. It really is the best of both worlds.

Scan for a copy of the Sled Sicamous Trail Guides.

The trailhead to Owlhead is located right in town. Queest, Blue Lake, and Eagle Pass riding areas are within a short 20 minute drive. All four mountains have groomed trails heading to the sledding area. Each area features a cozy cabin to warm up by the fire or enjoy your packed lunch.

snowshoeing & winterwalks

our best kept secret

Shhh... Winter beach walks are one of the best kept secrets of living on the Shuswap. As the lake rarely freezes, and the water levels are low, it’s a glorious way to spend a healthy part of a bright winter’s day.

Come winter, our popular hiking and cycling trails are perfect for snowshoeing or fat biking. Explore the Old Sicamous Highway Trail or the Eagle River Nature Trails’ old growth Cedar and Hemlock forest along the river.

The Larch Hill Traverse and the Mara Hills hike are epic winter challenges for hikers and cyclists alike. As with all adventure sports, it’s important to know the conditions, pack proper supplies and have a mapped out plan.

rainforests & hotpools

For something a little bit magical, visit the North Fork Wild Conservation Park along the Perry River. An inland rainforest that's home to unique plant life. There you'll find 4 kms of trails ranging from easy to moderate. A beautiful setting for a quiet, nature-inspired snowshoe hike.

Afterwards, head slightly east to the Crazy Creek Resort and their hot pools to indulge in a long, relaxing soak. A perfect ending to a classic winters day in the great outdoors. Head back to Sicamous and warm up by the fire at one of the local pubs.

Winter is the perfect time to marvel at the icy Kay Falls, a relatively unknown and impressive gem standing at 57 metres tall, just off the Trans Canada Highway.

don't move a mussel

what's the problem?

Everything we love about the Shuswap - the clean water, beaches, enjoying leisure time on a boat or dock - is at risk due to the small invasive freshwater mussels called zebra and quagga mussels.

Zebra and quagga mussels would have devastating impacts in the Shuswap. The mussels grow and cling to anything below the surface including boat hulls, inside engine compartments, as well as on dock pilings, pipes, rocks, and more. Removing colonies of mussels from water intakes and treatment centres, hydro-electric facilities, irrigation systems and more would be an ongoing maintenance requirement. The cost of dealing with an infestation of zebra and quagga mussels is estimated at $64 - $129 million annually in BC.

Additionally, invasive zebra and quagga mussels pollute water quality through their filter-feeding, competing with native species for food, and putting the lake and drinking water at risk.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to eliminate zebra and quagga mussels once they establish in a lake as large and complex as Shuswap Lake. And, the mussels reproduce prolifically leading to massive infestations.

focus on prevention

Measures must be taken to prevent spreading existing aquatic invasive species to other regions of the Shuswap or the province.

Invasive freshwater clams (also known as Golden or Pygmy Clam) occur in the Salmon Arm reach of Shuswap Lake. By practicing CleanDrain-Dry we can slow their spread to other parts of the lake.

Invasive freshwater clams are small triangular-shaped shellfish, usually less than 2.5 cm. They are golden brown or yellow-green in colour with distinctive growth rings. They have been used as food, fishing bait, and as aquarium species. They have the potential to cause harm to Shuswap Lake by impacting water quality, reducing biodiversity, and competing with native species for food and habitat.

simple steps to protect our waters

Prevention is the only option and is of the utmost importance to protect Shuswap Lake and everything we love about it.

Zebra and quagga mussels move from one lake to another by attaching to watercraft, while their microscopic larvae can travel in any standing water. Therefore, boaters must take the following steps to avoid moving mussels from one waterbody to another:

STEP 1: Clean, drain, and dry your boat or watercraft and trailer every time you move it out of a lake or river. Clean off plants, mud, and clinging aquatic life from watercraft, trailers, and equipment such as waders and fishing gear. Drain bilge, ballast tanks and bags, baitwells, engine coolant system, and inflatable water toys onto dry land and mop up standing water with a chamois cloth. Ensure watercraft and equipment are dry before launching into another waterbody.

STEP 2: Stop at mandatory watercraft inspection stations when you travel with a watercraft. Inspection is mandatory for all watercraft including sport boats, kayaks and canoes, car-toppers, personal watercraft (Sea- Doos, etc.), paddleboards, and sailboats.

Stopping at an inspection station is free but failing to stop while transporting a watercraft carries a heavy fine. If you’re visiting the Shuswap from outside of BC and did not have your boat or watercraft inspected, please phone the provincial RAPP line at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277) before you launch.

EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU MOVE YOUR WATERCRAFT OR EQUIPMENT FROM A BODY OF WATER. STOP FOR INSPECTIONS

If you are transporting a watercraft in B.C., you must stop and report to all invasive mussel watercraft inspection stations along your travel route.

report it

You can report sightings of invasive freshwater clams, and other invasive species, via the ‘Report Invasives BC’ app. For suspected zebra and quagga mussels, please phone the RAPP hotline right away.

BRINGING A WATERCRAFT TO BC?

To avoid accidentally introducing invasive Zebra and Quagga Mussels to the Shuswap, or moving other aquatic invasive species such as invasive clams from one lake to another, you must:

wildfire prevention

fire safety in the outdoors campfire safety rules

Outdoor enthusiasts can play an important role in reducing human caused fires.

Discarded cigarette butts, campfires, hot exhaust pipes coming into contact with dry grass and vegetation, power tools (such as chainsaws), candles or mosquito coils and even discarded glass can all ignite and start a wildfire.

It is important to be careful when in the outdoors, not only when enjoying a campfire or off-roading in the backcountry, but also in using tools and handling, storing and disposing of combustible materials and fuels.

where to stay

do not set off fireworks

FIREWORKS ARE NOT PERMITTED WITHIN THE DISTRICT OF SICAMOUS BOUNDARIES (BYLAW NO. 963). FIREWORKS AND EMBERS CAUSE FOREST FIRES.

Check current campfire restrictions for the area you are in.

Select your campsite and campfire location carefully.

Remove all leaves, twigs and other flammable material from the area around where you plan to light your campfire.

Never have a campfire when it’s windy or gusty.

Choose a proper fire pit, or make a ring of rocks at least three metres from trees, shrubs, structures and any debris.

Do not leave a campfire unattended for ANY amount of time, even if you are close by.

Keep a bucket of at least eight litres of water close by the fire at all times, and/or a hand tool (such as a shovel) to extinguish the fire properly.

Completely extinguish your campfire before you go to sleep or leave the area.

To extinguish your campfire, pour plenty of water on the fire and surrounding area, dousing the site of the campfire thoroughly. Stir the campfire until there are no embers and the ashes are cold to the touch.
