KRISTEN BRANDS / SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA As a senior accounting major, Kristen Brands (’10) was awarded the Elijah Watt Sells Award, which is presented annually to those who have the top 10 scores in the nation on the CPA exam. Following graduation, she began working with accountants from the country’s top business schools at Ernst and Young in Minneapolis. She soon realized that she was “just as prepared or better prepared” than they were. “Being in upper-level classes at Dordt, which are often small in size, was like having daily personal tutoring,” she says appreciatively. She adds, the biblical worldview she cultivated as a student continues to shape how she does her work and lives her life. And the sense of community she still feels as a Dordt College alumna continues to enrich her life. Brands, the accounting manager responsible for the five accountants in her father’s 22 Taco John’s franchises, is helping make the kinds of opportunities she had at Dordt available to today’s students.
