Value of print portfolio Publication class does not lend itself to a traditional final since each individual journalist has different skills/ accomplishments to highlight Self-reflection is valuable Process involves higher order thinking, particularly analysis and synthesis

Why the shift to digital Well, plenty of obvious reasons, but also... Old method got out of hand, especially with my four-year journalists, as portfolios got bulkier Portfolios were becoming scrapbooks; I wanted to see more analysis And I was tired of hauling them home

STAGG LINE
GOALS
EVERYONE MUST ADOPT ONE OF THESE SMART GOALS. ONCE A STAFF MEMBER IS BEYOND THE FIRST SEMESTER, HE/SHE MUST ADD AN ORIGINAL SMART GOAL AS WELL.
AP STYLE GOAL I will master the rules of AP Style related to capitalization, abbreviations, titles, numbers and quote style. This mastery will be evident in first draft stories submitted. The AP Style handout is an important study tool. I will master the mandatory and optional steps inPHOTO EDITING volved in photo preparation for print (color/grayGOAL scale) and Web. This includes clear understanding of adjustments, adjustment layers, filters, tools. This mastery will be evident in photos prepared and submitted for publication. The Photo Editing handout is an important study tool. SLR CAMERA GOAL
WEB GOAL
I will master taking photographs manually using a Canon SLR camera, adjusting as needed the aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. This mastery will be evident in photos taken for publication. The SLR Camera Settings and Stagg Line Lenses handouts are important study tools. I will master all steps involved in the process of preparing stories and photos for the staggline.com website. This mastery will be evident as every web edition gets published one day prior to the print edition. There is no handout. Study will have to take place by working with the current web editor.

And finally ... STUDENTS ARE learning more reflecting more, analyzing more, processing more teaching their peers and seeking help from their peers forced out of their comfort zone never stuck with “nothing to do” now working on their second portfolio, making improvements Portfolios in the Digital Age. Don Bott
My reflections ... I’m happy with expectations, e.g. # of pages I would like to see design get better I would like to see students show more of their process (writing from draft to final, graphics in early stage, photos not used) I would like to see writing more polished, mistakes less frequent, so overall it appears less rushed
