CULTURAL HOMAGE TO ST. DOMINIC SAVIO
Sixth May 2016. Feast of the youth role model, St. Dominic Savio. Fr. Paulus Kerketta sdb and Fr. Neljen Antony sdb had conceived a novel idea of honouring the day’s Saint with a Cultural Day. The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians and the school teachers fully cooperated and prepared the students meticulously. This Cultural Extravaganza had the following list of items: (1) Lighting of Lamp in Assamese traditional style by the Headmaster, Sir Nobo & senior students, (2) Welcome speech by Fr. Paulus, On 16 and 17 May 2016 Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, organized a two-day long basic course in print journalism in which 48 second year students participated. Fr. Jonas Kerketta, from Christ King Parish, Kohima, was the resource person. The resource person first briefly dealt with the meaning, elements, process and types of communication. He helped the students to understand the anatomy of a newspaper. He then explained to them the meaning of the term ‘journalism’, characteristics, elements and types of news. The participants were also briefly introduced to different national and international news agencies. The participants were divided into six groups and were assigned to bring out a ‘newspaper’ of their

St. Dominic Savio used to tell the new comers to Don Bosco’s Oratory, “Here we make sanctity consist in being cheerful”. The spectacular performance of the students of St. Thomas School – with lovely blend of cultures – Mising, Assamese, Nepali, Arunachalese, Adivasi, Bengali, Bihari, et al – must have mightily pleased the Saint of youth as it enthralled the enthusiastic -DL Correspondent

This exercise was conducted to help the students to have practice in writing proper headlines, leads, news reports, features, press releases, and letters to the editor. The participants were encouraged to develop a ‘nose for news’ and to contribute news reports and articles to their own diocesan and religious/province newsletters and periodicals. Practice of journalism was presented more as a mission than a profession. Referring to the Bible the resource person said, “For Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep silent…” ( Is. 62:1) and urged the students to gradually become “the voice of the voiceless”.
