UCPS PROGRAM OF STUDIES 2012 - 2013

Grade: 9-12

Geometry - Honors (4) S 1 Credit - NCWISE # 20305C PREREQUISITE: Algebra I Geometry continues the study of geometric concepts building upon middle school topics. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments. Two- and three-dimensional reasoning skills are emphasized as students broaden their use of the coordinate plane to include transformations of geometric figures. Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. Foundations of Algebra II (3) S 1 Credit - NCWISE # 20182CA2

Grade: 10-12

Applied Mathematics I (2) S 1 Credit - NCWISE #20261

This introductory course to Algebra II will allow students to master key skills needed to be successful in Algebra II. Students must also enroll in Algebra II in order to meet the high school math graduation requirements.

Grade: 9-12

Applied Mathematics I(3) S 1 Credit - NCWISE #20262 PREREQUISITES: Algebra I and Geometry This course provides learners an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts and skills from earlier high school mathematics courses in practical situations while focusing on learning skills associated with information and communication technology. Applied Mathematics II (2) S 1 Credit - NCWISE #20271

Grade: 11-12

Grade: 9-12

PREREQUISITE: Applied Mathematics I This course provides learners an opportunity to apply mathematical concepts and skills from earlier high school mathematics courses to financial situations while using learning skills associated with information and communication technology.

Algebra II - Honors (4) S 1 Credit - NCWISE # 20245C

Discrete Math (3) S 1 Credit - NCWISE # 20502C

PREREQUISITES: Algebra I and Geometry

Discrete Math - Honors (4) S 1 Credit - NCWISE # 20505C

Algebra II continues the student’s study of advanced algebraic concepts including functions, and matrices building on their work with linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. Students work with expressions that define functions and continue to expand their abilities to model situations and to solve equations, including solving quadratic equations over the set of complex numbers and solving exponential equations using the properties of logarithms. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations. Advanced Functions & Modeling (3) S 1 Credit - NCWISE # 20252C

Grade: 10-12

PREREQUISITE: Algebra II Discrete Mathematics introduces students to the mathematics of networks, social choice, and decision making. The course extends students’ application of matrix arithmetic and probability. Applications and modeling are central to this course. The use of manipulative, calculators, and application software is expected. Pre-Calculus (4) S 1 Credit - NCWISE # 20705C

Grade: 10-12

PREREQUISITE: Advanced Functions and Modeling OR Honors Algebra II Pre-Calculus should be taken by students who intend to continue their study of mathematics and/or science beyond the high school level. It is a PREREQUISITE for AP Calculus. Course studies provide a complete study of trigonom-
