CLEMSON STATION

CLEMSON STATION JUNIOR YEAR CLEMSON, SOUTH CAROLINA

This proposal for a trainstation would act as a sculptural signifier overlooking the city from the north. The design of the station is my expression of efficient programatic usage of the site. The very plastic nature of the material, namely concrete, enables a singular fluid motion that incorporates circulation, programming, and aesthetics. It’s eccentric and gestural character combines the past with the contemporary.

VERTIKAL

VERTIKAL JUNIOR YEAR BERLIN, GERMANY

“Berlin is a city condemned forever to becoming and never to being.” -Karl Sheffler 1910, Berlin: Ein Stadtschicksal Vertikal is a restaurant design located in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin. Berlin is a city without an identity, but that in and of itself is its identity. In modern history its undergone a tremendous amount of change, from Bismarck to World War I and World War II to the cold war and the Berlin Wall. The division and conflict the city has endured has led to the culture of today’s Berlin as one of progress and moving forward.

DESIGN COLLAGE

DESIGN I created a collage to illustrate the idea behind my design. I was influenced by the act of cooking and seeing cooking as a an experiential performance. My goal for this project is to incorporate the elements of vertical acoustic circulation of sound and light found in the act of cooking and translating them into an abstract and ethereal interior space. I achieved this by creating open spaces that combined cooking, music, and community.

STREET FACADE

STRUCTURE In my process I’ve created this organic and ephemeral fabric that carves out the interior space of the building. This organic form also models the raised central food stage that connects the different floors and spaces to each other. The intricacies of the organic form is constructed with a lattice shell system. This system works in unison with a rigid orthogonal steel frame system to bear the load of the floor plates. The juxtaposition of these two systems reflect the city of Berlin in its two once separate parts that have come together to work in unison. STRUCTURE ISOMETRIC

URBAN CONTEXT

URBAN CONTEXT JUNIOR YEAR BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

Boston is a city characterized by it’s historical growth. The figure ground tells the story of the city’s evolution from colonial settlement, to industrial powerhouse, and ultimately to modern metropolis. The lifeline of the city is the renowned Boston Harbor, and it was an objective of mine to represent it as such. Boston’s cultural and historical significance enabled the luxury of a wealth of maps, statistics, and documentation that I used to illustrate the exapansion of the city.

THE DYESS MUSEUM

DYESS MUSEUM SOPHOMORE YEAR CLEMSON, SOUTH CAROLINA

This project is a design for a museum on Clemson University’s campus. The precedent study that influenced my design is the Kimbell Art Museum by Louis Kahn. I was mostly inspired by Kahn’s utilization of natural lighting. The site of the museum, located between a large commuter parking lot and the rest of campus, is very active. I wanted to capture this foot traffic and utilize it in a way so that people are forced to experience the museum. I decided to split the building in two in a way that would make the everyday student or visitor more inclined to visit.

SITE STRATEGY

Clemson University sent more officers into WWII than any other military school, including West Point and Annapolis. I wanted to create a museum and memorial to commemorate the deeply rooted military heritage of the school and honor the namesake of the building Aquilla J. Dyess who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism in the Pacific Theatre. He is also a Clemson architecture graduate.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE

FUNCTION AND LIGHTING The two separate pieces of the building serve different functions. The northern section is the more enclosed private space where the exhibit is located.Whereas the southern side is primarily open public space containing the auditorium, cafe, gift shop, and classrooms. These two spaces are connected underground. One would enter the public space, descend into the lower level, and then travel through a rotating exhibit space. There would only be exits in the exhibit space.

Level 4 FLOOR PLANS AND LIGHT DIFFUSION

Each space of the museum utilizes natural light in different ways. The public space is windowed and open. The transitional space has a skylight that connects the exhibit to the outside. The ground floor of the museum limits the amount of light to preserve its collection which would consist of photographs, paintings, and uniforms. The lighting system in the memorial space diffuses direct light creating a unique space similar to the Kimbell Art Museum.

RULED SURFACE

RULED SURFACE SOPHOMORE YEAR CLEMSON, SOUTH CAROLINA

This project was for an open air overlook placed on a hillside. My design was a spiraling tower that incorporated a hierarchal pathway made of a ruled surface. The challenge of this project was to design curves using only straight lines. My main idea was to take a shape and divide it into its essential pieces. I then took these pieces and connected them to each other. My final design was created by using this technique with a sphere.
