President’s Message

N

ow that we are heading into the end of 2023, I’d like you to acknowledge the work that the Directors and various committees have been undertaking. I have highlighted a few key achievements below:Conformation Judges and Event Managers (Chair Vicki Schneider) – apart from the ongoing training and support of our judges and show officials, this committee recently delivered targeted training to our up and coming judges, including distance education for our regional members. Training is provided on a regular basis for our stewards and show managers. Without these members trained in these areas, the dog world would not exist. Constitution and Rules (Chair Gordon Mayne) – this Committee has worked tirelessly to update our Rules to ensure they are inline with Dogs Australia regulations as well as reflecting the needs of our organisation. One major task has been the development of the Rules of Association which involved not only a template for Clubs, but also face to face and Zoom training sessions for club officials. Durack Ground Committee (Chair Mandy Schelbach) – this small group of members who comprise this committee have made significant improvements to our Durack grounds. They have identified areas requiring additional maintenance and upgrades. The members of this committee have physically worked to clean and maintain the our beautiful grounds. They ensure all work is completed within budget and on time to minimise disruption and maximise benefits to our members. Queensland Dog Sport Committee (Chair Barb Murfet) – with dog sport being a major growth area, this committee comprises numerous sub-committees. This year, Queensland has successfully hosted a State and National

4

DOG WORLD December 2023/January 2024

Obedience and Rally trials together with Agility. They also held an inaugural State Scent Work Trial. The committee works with National committees on Rule updates. The committee provides judges training for the various dog sports. An annual celebration of the success of our competitors will be held in February 2024. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate our wonderful dog sports. State Scent Work Trial – Sam Kacin’s Nova

Junior Handler Committee (Chair Duncan McAllister) – a fantastic State final was held this year. The Committee has supported our junior handlers with workshops and suit swaps. Next year Queensland will host the National final! Fund raising shows have been planned so please support this committee and our up and coming junior handlers. Canine Health Committee (Chair Elisa McCutcheon) – this committee has been very

proactive in working with key stakeholders to address health concerns in our breeds. In particular, they have been instrumental in providing targeted health testing and facilitated veterinary training and testing for brachycephalic breeds. The committee is working on a range of health and research issues as well as educating members in regards to these issues and prevention for the future. Government and Media Liaison (Chair Elisa McCutcheon) – this is a new committee implemented by the current Board. The Chair of this committee and committee members have been very proactive in working together with the General Manager, Executive and Welfare Officer. Meetings have been held with various stakeholders to provide a better understanding of our dog world and needs of our members. We have also been well represented in both radio and television media providing our position on legislative proposals. Marketing and Public Relations (Chair Katrina Santas) – another newly formed committee this year which brings a number of previous subcommittees together. Long term planning and fund raising has been implemented to ensure the events will be viable in the future. Dog of the Year will be held this year, the first time in many years! We look forward to this event showcasing all highly successful conformation winners in one place. Library and Museum (Chair Duncan McAllister) – a long overdue review of the feasibility of building a library and museum is being undertaken by this committee. The committee has sought member engagement to gage interest in this project. This is a long term project which is ongoing and progressing A link to the committees, members and charters are found here I would like to thank all those members who have contributed to the success of our dog world in 2023. Especially our General Manager, Rob Harrison and all the Dogs Queensland staff. I look forward to working with you all in 2024.

Breeder Alert – Puppy Scam Websites Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government. Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: • Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix. • Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you. • Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details. • Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

Dilute colours, liver and blue and other dilute variations are not acceptable as they are linked with health issues, in particular skin problems and alopeacia, and quality breeders avoid them. A DNA test is available to assist breeders in avoiding the dilute gene. TEMPERAMENT The Griffon Bruxellois is a plucky little dog with a lively and alert temperament. They do not bark excessively but will bark to alert the owner to visitors or intruders. Griffons are extremely affectionate and they are intensely devoted to their owners and love to be with them. A Griffon owner is often like the Pied Piper with a Griffon or Griffons following wherever they go – even to the bathroom! They will happily sit in the kitchen and watch you prepare the evening meal. And of course, they will happily supervise while you eat it.

HEALTH Griffons are generally sturdy, healthy little dogs and they usually live to about 14 -16 years of age when bred by a responsible breeder and cared for appropriately. Like all brachycephalic dogs, common sense must be used when it is hot and they should be kept cool and not be over exercised in hot weather. BOAS, in well-bred dogs is not a big problem in the breed – most have open, large nostrils and few difficulties, but is something people need to be aware of. Responsible breeders are fully aware of it and are taking up the testing that is slowly becoming available in Australia SM/CM has been found in the breed but reputable breeders are aware of the issues and it does not seem to be widespread in Australia. It is a complex condition and the MRI available is only diagnostic at this stage despite years of research into the condition. Testing is also done for hips, heart and eyes. The most common health issues are slipping patellas

Griffons are not the easiest dogs to breed, compared to other breeds but once they are older, they grow into healthy, playful little dogs. SUITABILITY Griffons are versatile little dogs who make wonderful house dogs and companions. They are affectionate and cheeky, happy to play but also happy to sit quietly and watch TV. They are suitable for apartments as they do not need a lot of space. However, they do like to run and Griffon owners are familiar with ‘zoomies’. Kelly Pilgrim Byrne

They need to be a member of the family and be with the family. They cannot be treated as yard dogs and left outside. Equally, they are active intelligent little dogs and need to be respected as a dog. They cannot just be treated like a toy, an Instagram attraction or a surrogate child. This can lead to separation anxiety or undesirable behaviours. They do best when they are allowed to use their intelligence.

Because they are very intelligent and willing to please they respond well to training and have succeeded in various activities such as Obedience, Rally Obedience, Trick Dogs, Scent Work and Agility and they love it. They have also been used as Therapy dogs and Support dogs – roles the do well in because they are very intuitive. And of course, they are perfect as devoted and loyal pets. They like children if brought up sensibly with them, but being a small dog, young children need to be supervised with them to ensure that they do not hurt the dog. and again quality breeders are aware of this. There are no specific DNA health tests that can be done for Griffons, although the full panel test can identify Respiratory Distress Syndrome along with coat and colour genes. All responsible breeders are aware of these conditions and will be happy to discuss them with people. The two Griffon breed clubs in Australia, The Country Griffon Bruxellois Club of NSW and The Griffon Bruxellois Club of Victoria are also always happy to provide advice and guidance.

Griffons are a great pet for families, single people or older people. They are easy to travel with and can easily be taken on holidays with the family. They are very friendly little dogs and love to meet and greet other people. They get on well with other dogs and at club gatherings there are frequently have 50 or more Griffons all running happily together. Griffons love other Griffons and can recognise their own breed from a distance Griffon owners have a saying – “you just can’t stop at one”.

Desexing and impact on longevity – Carolynne J. Joonè, Senior Lecturer, Veterinary Reproduction College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences, James Cook University – Dr Dmitry A. Konovalov, Senior Lecturer, Information Technology College of Science & Engineering, James Cook University – Elisa J. McCutcheon Chair, Dogs Queensland Canine Health Committee A recent study from James Cook University has linked desexing to shorter lifespans in the Rottweiler breed. The study, published in Nature Scientific Reports and freely available at https:// www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-45128-w, was performed in collaboration with VetCompass, a growing database of de-identified electronic patient records from participating veterinary practices across Australia. The impact of desexing on canine health has been a topic of interest, to both dog owners

24

DOG WORLD December 2023/January 2024

and researchers alike, for a number of decades. Traditionally, veterinarians recommend desexing at around 6 months of age, particularly for female dogs. Desexing at this age carries several advantages. Firstly, females desexed before their first heat are guaranteed to never produce an unwanted litter. There is research which suggests that desexing campaigns do very little to combat pet overpopulation, but nevertheless, it surely remains prudent to desex animals not intended for breeding. Accidental matings are known to happen under the care of even the most conscientious of dog owners! A second motivation for desexing prior to a female’s first heat is the hugely decreased risk of mammary tumours, in comparison to intact females or those desexed later in life. Desexing after the first heat but prior to 2.5 years of age will still confer some protective effect. Although mammary tumours are relatively easy to detect at an early stage by a diligent owner, these tumours are extremely common (in intact females) and around half are reported to be malignant. And thirdly, desexing eliminates the risk of a potentially

life-threatening infection of the uterus, known as pyometra. The female dog is particularly predisposed to this disorder, largely due to the nature of the canine reproductive cycle where the hormonal profiles during both pregnancy and nonpregnancy are remarkably similar, a feature not generally seen in other domestic species. Research from the Nordic countries, where desexing surgeries are not permitted unless on medical grounds, shows that up to 20% of intact female dogs will be affected by pyometra before the age of 10 years, with around 1% of cases being fatal. Also, although older female dogs are generally expected to be at higher risk for pyometra, this disorder is diagnosed in surprisingly young females (< 2 years of age) from time to time. There are also practical reasons for desexing non-breeding dogs. Intact females on heat will attract intact males from far and wide, increasing the risk of these dogs roaming and getting lost or hurt, particularly in motor vehicle accidents., In addition, not every owner cares to live with bloody vulval discharge on their carpets or bedding, or to bear witness to their dogs’ sexual behaviours. Despite these well-established arguments in favour of desexing for non-breeding dogs, veterinarians and dog owners have remained vigilant for potential side effects of the procedure. We know that desexed animals grow taller than those left intact (if desexing occurred at a young age), and they also have a tendency to put on weight more easily. In females, desexing is linked to urinary incontinence, a common disorder that is easily treated but, frustratingly, will require life-long treatment. In addition, relatively recent evidence has suggested links between desexing and certain cancers, as well as some hormonal and musculoskeletal disorders, for example diabetes and cranial cruciate ligament rupture (both of which are, interestingly, also linked to obesity). In male dogs, desexing prevents benign prostatic hyperplasia but increases the risk of prostatic cancer, although this cancer remains relatively rare, affecting between 2 and 6 individuals per thousand dogs according to one study. Other cancers thought to increase with desexing include haemangiosarcomas, transitional cell carcinomas

and osteosarcomas. In some studies, desexing may be reported to “double (or triple) the risk”. However, this risk needs to be put into perspective. If a cancer affects, for example, 2 in a thousand dogs, then even tripling the risk means that the disorder is expected to affect 6 in a thousand dogs. So, it is generally more useful to consider the absolute risk of a disorder (eg. 6 per 1000 dogs), but this must also be weighed up against the severity of the disorder; for example, osteosarcoma is less common but may be far more traumatic for both dog and owner than a mammary tumour. In evaluating the strength of research findings, it is also important to bear in mind that research based on sound scientific principles should be held in higher regard than those based on weaker study designs. For example, the ideal way to evaluate the risks of desexing might be to randomly group dogs into “intact” or “desexed at age X” study groups from birth, and to follow them throughout their lives. Ideally, such a study would involve thousands of dogs of various breeds and would take well over a decade to complete. Such a study has not yet been reported, and is unlikely to ever be done, sadly, for practical reasons. Clearly, this type of study would be far more reliable than a study based on, for example, a questionnaire asking about a particular disorder, where dog owners who have been impacted by the disorder might be more likely to take the time to respond than an owner who has never seen it. In addition, study findings that are verified consistently by additional studies are difficult to dismiss. However, where results vary substantially between studies, any statistical significance detected becomes more likely to be mere chance than true biological effect. Caution should also be exercised in studies claiming wide breed differences in regards to the ideal age of desexing. Until such conclusions can be verified through repeated studies in different geographical areas or even within the same area but over a different time period, they should be viewed with interest but mild suspicion. A primary motivation for this recent study was the suggestion, by others, that longevity may be a better indication of the risks of desexing than the occurrence of specific medical disorders, particularly the cancers which generally become

unchanged when all dogs neutered before the age of 4.5 years were included. Furthermore, when focusing on dogs neutered beyond 4.5 years of age, it again appeared that neutered animals had shorter life expectancies from about 6 years of age in females and around 8 years of age in males, however statistical significance could not be demonstrated, possibly due to small sample sizes at these points.

more common with age, and so may be more common in dogs that live longer. To date, the vast majority of studies have found that desexed dogs live longer. To our knowledge, only one previous study (in Rottweilers) linked ovary retention (intact females) to increased odds of extreme longevity. Using the VetCompass database, clinical records for all available Rottweilers, that included a date of birth and a date of death, were collected. By simply splitting males and females according to the label “desexed” or “intact”, life expectancy from birth for intact or desexed male Rottweilers was similar at around 9.5 years of age. For female Rottweilers, life expectance from birth was around 10 years of age for females destined to be desexed during their lifetime, and just over 9 years of age for females that would remain intact until their death. Ceasing the study at this point would have contributed nicely to the idea that desexing promotes longevity! However, by looking at the ages at which individual dogs died, life expectancy in intact and desexed females was found to be similar, while intact male Rottweilers of at least 6 years of age had a remaining lifespan around 6 months longer than desexed males of the same age. The study then looked at the dogs’ ages at desexing, for the dogs where this data was available. For Rottweilers desexed prior to one year of age, life expectance was around 1 year and 1.5 years lower in desexed females and males respectively, than their intact counterparts. Interestingly, this effect remained virtually

26

DOG WORLD December 2023/January 2024

In summary, this study found a negative association between desexing and lifespan in the Rottweiler breed. In addition, no optimal age for desexing was apparent, and it may be that such an age does not exist for this breed. In other words, desexing may negatively impact lifespan in this breed, regardless of when it is performed. The question then, is: What might cause desexed Rottweilers to die younger than intact Rottweilers, at least within this database? Could desexing put Rottweilers at increased risk of some terminal disorders? It would certainly be interesting to look at cause of death in the dogs which were the subject of this study. Or are there selective factors at play? Could those animals that were left intact have been deliberately bred and selected for good health and associated longevity? Or could there be other extraneous reasons (not directly related to the effect of desexing but which still have an impact on these statistics)? For example, could it be that owners who desex their dogs are more likely to euthanase them in a timely manner (for whatever reason)? Like most research, one finding usually leads to many more questions! One further aspect that would be interesting to investigate is body weight or body condition in intact versus desexed Rottweilers. We know that desexing in dogs is associated with increased risk of obesity. Furthermore, obesity is well known to be negatively associated with lifespan, in dogs and other species. Therefore, is it possible that desexed Rottweilers die younger simply because they are fatter? Further research from this group aims to compare life expectancies in intact versus desexed dogs of additional breeds, which may shed more light on this important issue.

FEEDING PUPPIES Adapted from article by Dr Emmanuel Fontaine, Royal Canin Senior Scientific Communications Veterinarian Canada (DVM, MSc, PhD, Dip. ECAR) Vet Focus article

To properly care for newborn puppies, a useful mantra is “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Neonatal puppies can be more vulnerable to disease conditions and along with preventative healthcare, optimal nutrition can go a long way to ensuring good health at this fragile time. If that nutrition is compromised for any reason, the risks of health issues and even neonatal mortality can rise. It may be that puppy is orphaned, abandoned, or born with cleft palate affecting their ability to feed, or another health condition putting them at risk of inadequate nutrition. In the case of large litters, maternal mastitis, or poor milk supply, you might need to supplement. Aside from mum’s milk, what is the best milk replacement for puppies, when needing to bottle feed? Milk replacers should be part of any maternity “toolkit” as there will be times that they may be required to optimize the health of newborn puppies and important to have on hand. And what to feed is of course important, this comes down to nutritional adequacy for puppies. It is important that the milk replacer composition is as close as possible to the typical composition of canine milk. Many owners assume that any milk will be suitable for newborn puppies, but the bitch’s milk is very specific. This is because canine milk, when compared to other species, is more energy dense, has higher levels of minerals (e.g., calcium and phosphorus) and contains more protein. Cow or goat milk are quite different in composition, and they do not offer the proper nutritional balance to sustain healthy growth in newborn puppies. Lactose is also in much higher levels in cow and goat milk compared to canine milk and can lead to diarrhea, so best avoided for newborn puppies. Human milk replacers are not recommended either. These products contain starch, which acts as a thickener to help babies feel full, as well as providing carbohydrate. However, newborn puppies do not possess the necessary enzymes to properly digest starch, so such products should also be avoided.

Recent studies have shown that at-risk puppies will benefit from energy supplementation, and such individuals should be offered an appropriate milk replacer when identified. Growth curves are also starting to become available for dog breeders and veterinarians which will assist in monitoring the growth of puppies during the neonatal period. These can help in early identification of potential problems, as a lack of weight gain is often one of the first indicators of poor health. Nutritional supplementation via a milk replacer is certainly an option in these cases. Factors that can identify puppies at risk of neonatal mortality during the first 48h are APGAR Scores (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration) the five parameters are each scored as 0, 1 or 2, and puppies are considered at risk if their APGAR score is below 7. This has a predictive value for the first 8 hours after birth. Your breeding veterinarian can help with this assessment. Other parameters that might add to the risk of neonate mortality in the first 24-48 hours are low birth weight, low body temperature, low blood glucose levels, and low early growth rates hence importance of careful monitoring and weighing.

BREEDERS.ROYALCANIN.COM.AU

Other problems to consider are “Litter heterogeneity” which refers to the weight difference seen between the biggest and smallest puppies in a litter. This has also been identified as a risk factor for early neonatal mortality. When high litter heterogeneity is detected i.e., a big weight difference, the litter should be flagged as being potentially at risk. This is also a reminder that, in neonatology, the litter should always be considered in its entirety.

The difference in weight will accentuate competition for accessing milk, and supplementation with a milk replacer may help. At weaning, which typically starts around 4-4.5 weeks of age, it is recommended that the transition from milk to solid food is as smooth as possible. If using kibble, it should be rehydrated during the first few weeks of weaning to make it easier for the puppies to ingest and digest the food, and a milk replacer can be used instead of water during the first week to ease this transition.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS A common mistake seen when using milk replacer is adding too much water (so that the product is too dilute) or insufficient water (so that the product is too concentrated) and resulting changes to the digestive system that can lead to diarrhea or constipation. Before a milk replacer is fed to newborn puppies, whether they are debilitated or not, it is essential to check their body temperature. During the first week of life, the newborn’s body temperature is between 35.5-36.5oC. It will only reach adult body temperature three weeks after birth, but if a puppy’s temperature drops below 34oC the digestive tract goes into stasis, preventing digestion of food, so that administration of milk will lead to bloating and abdominal discomfort. This is a common mistake, especially encountered with orphaned pups; owners might think that the priority is to bottlefeed them but may not first check their body temperature to ensure it is safe to do so. Puppies cannot thermoregulate during the first three weeks of life, so if hypothermia develops, they must be warmed up before being bottle-fed. Infrared lamps, heating pads, water bottles or incubators are all options to be considered, but the warming process should be gradual, taking at least an hour before starting the bottle feed.

Also advisable is to optimize the temperature inside the nest in order to prevent hypothermia and its consequences. The author recommends 30oC inside the nest during the first week after birth, 28oC for the second week and 25oC for the third week. After this period puppies will be able to thermoregulate, and hypothermia is less of a concern. Specific puppy bottles should be used, as they come with adapted nipples which ensure optimal milk flow during feeding. If the milk flow is too fast (e.g., if using human bottles on small breed newborn puppies), aspiration can occur. The author also prefers to use a bottle with pre-prepared nipples; some are supplied with nipples which requires the tip to be cut before use, but if not done properly, this can again lead to an over-fast delivery of milk with the same unwanted consequences. Following manufacturers instructions is imperative, as is stimulating urination and defecation with a moist cloth after every feed, and of utmost importance is seeking and following the advice of your Veterinarian with any concerns you have about the health of you neonatal puppy to catch any problems early and ensure they have the very best of healthcare through this time of development and growth.

Update on Proposed reforms to the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act A review of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 was undertaken taking into account recommendations of a taskforce including the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries participating local governments, the Local Government Association of Queensland and RSPCA Queensland. More than 3650 Queenslanders completed the survey and more than 300 written submissions were received through a 60-day consultation process to assess public support for the reforms. This included a submission from Dogs Queensland. On 16 November 2023, the Hon Mark Furner MP, Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities introduced the Bill with the proposed reforms to Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act into Queensland State Parliament. The proposed new laws include: n Increased penalties for the most serious dog attack offences, including imprisonment as an option; n A ban on the restricted dog breeds of Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, American pit bull terrier or pit bull terrier, and the Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario; n Development of a community education program; and n

Streamlining decisions and appeals on the future of seized dangerous animals.

This is intended to provide more coordinated,

consistent and effective government action in response to dog attacks, and also to support dog management initiatives in First Nations communities. The funding will also include a community education and awareness campaign rolled out over three years to build responsible dog ownership, prevent dog attacks, and reduce the risk of harm from dog attacks. CONSIDERATION IS THE KEY

I recently had the pleasure of being Show Manager at the combined Caboolture Kennel Club and Dogs Queensland Championship Show. Following my experience on the day, and speaking to numerous members, I would like to share some observations. Assembly areas These areas are for exhibitors waiting to go into the ring to show their dogs. They are NOT there for exhibitors to sit and block the assembly area from others. Once your breed has been judged, please leave the assembly area for the next breed. Overcrowding has resulted in some exhibitors missing their call. Overcrowding also leads to an increased risk of aggressive dog incidents. Let’s give everybody space to assemble and prepare their dogs when going into the ring. Parking Please ensure you park your vehicle facing the ring area taking minimal space. Everyone likes to be as close as possible to the ring so please be thoughtful in how you park. Driving Speed We are fortunate that our road areas have had extensive work making them smooth. Please drive at a safe speed. Remember there are children and dogs to consider. We want to keep everyone safe including those in the camping area next to the roadway. Smoking We have a designated smoking area at Durack. That area is NOT under gazebos and ringside. Everyone needs to be safe and not feel the effects of secondhand smoke. I have received numerous

complaints about exhibitors smoking in gazebos. We want everybody to be able to enjoy their day. I would like to remind those wishing to smoke, to do so in the designated area. Camping We are very fortunate to have camping facilities available at Durack. It’s disappointing to hear reports of members camping without a booking and without payment. Members have been trusted to be honest and book and pay accordingly. The Camping Policy is found here. Withdrawing from Group or General Specials If you’re unable to stay for group or general specials, you are required to withdraw your dog with Show Manager. Failure to withdraw may result in your challenge points and awards being withdrawn. Nobody wants to see their hard earned awards withdrawn, so please make the effort to see the Show Manager on the day. This helps the stewards and show manager with the smooth running of the show when they have visibility of dogs who are present for the classes. The overall message is, be considerate to other exhibitors, be considerate to your stewards, club officials and show manager. We all attend events to have an enjoyable day and a small amount of consideration and courtesy goes a long way. We have some very special events coming up in the next few months and hope to see great entry numbers. So please, be considerate so everybody can enjoy the events without incident.

2023 QUEENSLAND SCENT WORK STATE TITLES – Kim Dawson On the weekend of 28-29 October 2023, many teams from throughout Queensland and interstate gathered at the Queensland State Athletics Centre (QSAC) to participate in the Dogs Queensland Scent Work State Titles competition. The weather obligingly cooled off just in time for the event and the new and exciting venue provided novel search areas. Judges from Victoria, ACT, New South Wales and Queensland officiated over 750 searches across the two days of competition in the largest Scent Work competition held to date in Queensland. Searches were conducted across all four elements – Containers, Interior, Exterior and Vehicles – and from Novice class up to Masters. Showcasing the high level of skill and teamwork amongst those competing at the highest level of competition, there were over 80 entries in the Masters Class, which was only offered for the first time in Queensland at the 2022 State Titles. Masters Class requires teams to find an unknown number of hides and target odours; ignoring food distractions in challenging search configurations including

“blank” searches, where the handler must successfully indicate that the area contains nothing the dog is trained to identify. Many teams achieved Element Titles in Container, Interior, Exterior and Vehicle elements, in addition to Scent Work Novice, Advanced and Excellent Class titles. Congratulations to everyone who competed over the massive weekend of Scent Work fun! Thank you to Judges Sonja Needs (VIC), Jo Washington-King (ACT), Donna Puttock (NSW), Natalie Kirkwood (QLD), Yvonne Handy (QLD), Stephanie Yoon (QLD), Kim Dawson (QLD) and the Score Room Lead, Jeanette Durante, for the marathon effort put in over the weekend, and a very heartfelt thank you to all of the stewards, timers, scribes, marshals and everyone else who stepped in to help over the weekend. A huge thank you to our very generous Sponsors – Royal Canin, Antinol and Rainbow Dog Tugs. Thanks also to our official photographer, JayDub Pet Photography.

TEAM CHALLENGE Wholeheartedly supported by the competitors, the extremely light-hearted “Scent Work Subcommittee Team Challenge” provided an amazing display of inventiveness, enthusiastic teamwork and community spirit. The Team Challenge encouraged competitors to form groups with themed Team names, costumes and food tables. Team scores were calculated on performance at a class and placement level, team spirit, inclusiveness, inventiveness, dedication to theme and good old-fashioned bribery of the moderators. It was wonderful to see the community spirit and the way that seasoned

competitors ensured newcomers to the sport were included. The Scent Work Subcommittee Team Challenge was won by the “Scent Detectives” (Team Captain Becky Thomas), by a very narrow margin over the fiercely competitive “Smells Like Team Spirit” and “Raiders of the Lost Alert”. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the Team Challenge and made the trial such an incredibly fun experience! 1st – Scent Detectives 2nd – Smells Like Team Spirit 3rd – Raiders of the Lost Alert

ABOUT SCENT WORK

Smith indicating the correct container

handler and dog. Dogs are trained to recognise specific odours, and to alert their handlers when the odours are detected. The dog and handler must work together as a team, using body language and verbal encouragement to ensure all sections of the search area are covered, directing the dog’s search only when necessary and indicating to the Judge when the dog has found the odour. Communication with and praise of the dog during the search are encouraged.

Scent Work is a sport that is based on the task of working detection dogs to locate an odour and communicate to the handler that the odour has been found. Detection is done in a variety of environments and often during changing weather or environmental conditions. Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the

Welcome To Zone 2 News!

75 YEARS AFFILIATED AND STILL GOING STRONG – Katrina Santas Maryborough Kennel Club recently celebrated their 75 years of continuous affiliation with the Canine Control Council (Queensland), now trading as Dogs Queensland, at their annual 4 November 2023 shows weekend. This is certainly an achievement for any canine club these days with clubs across our great state sometimes struggling to maintain memberships, committees, and workers to sustain them now and into the future. I believe much fun and laughter was had, not only by the exhibitors, but the judges and committee too – it’s a shame I had to miss the action with my interstate judging appointment. Thus, I must thank DQ Director, David Weil, for stepping in and officially opening the show weekend on my behalf with the celebratory cake cutting and the serving of a little sip of champagne to everyone. David, as we all know, is a great friend to Maryborough KC with his ongoing assistance of managing the judges, often stewarding and even show managing when needed. It was a great honour to

52

DOG WORLD December 2023/January 2024

have David help our long serving President, Greg Hoffman, and Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Denis Chapman, in welcoming everyone on Friday afternoon. The ensured the celebrations started off with some great recognition of the Clubs local longevity in the community by Dogs Queensland and from our local member.

Over the years, FCRC (and it’s previous names over the years) has been a great advocate for the Club and provided grants for show equipment, allocated dedicated show rings, provided buildings to the club at the showground and actively gets involved whenever possible.

“Thank you Maryborough KC for a great weekend. My guy Collin not only won 4x Minor in Groups but also gained his Champion Title!” Iris Cox

“Thank you for fabulous shows again ” Penny Driver

Many thanks also go out to the hard-working behind the scenes committee, stewards and their families in getting great shows like these to continue year on year. The judges were great with the exhibitors too (Jim and Lyndell Black, Kim Tosi and Lance Wright) and we thank them for their opinions on how wonderful our Zone 2 dogs are and that they could easily win in any part of Australia. This was so great for the exhibitors to hear too as there are many young and newer exhibitors in Zone 2 at present.

“We had a great weekend fantastic shows lovely rings indeed” Penny Smith

“Great weekend all round” Jayden BingleBrown

Thus, it was awesome to see a local Zone 2 owned and handled dog win all four Best in Show awards over the weekend – Gonz Donoso-Lopez with his Afghan Hound, Ch. Karakush From Start to Finnish (co-owned with Tim Gardner and Lee and Helen Gibson). Not that we do not appreciate, encourage and love our Zone 1 and 3 friends from joining the shows in Maryborough, but what a great effort for a highly competitive local dog to attain such high accolades. But the action and winning did not stop there. The exhibitors from near and far certainly gave great feedback about the weekend on the Club’s Facebook page. The Club really appreciates the feedback, the ongoing support and great sportsmanship as always from all our exhibitor friends: •

“Thank you so much for such a wonderful show that I will never forget!” Gonz Donosco

“Thank you so very much Liza, Debbie and your committee for such a wonderful show weekend. You are all stars ” Karly Hibberd

“Many friendships, A lot of laughs, One shopping spree, 3 new jackets … And catching up with friends after a long time. Thank you for once again putting on a wonderful show, I love Maryborough!” Cindy Ireland

“Fantastic shows and awesome grounds, was a lovely atmosphere!” Tayla Curran

Back before we can remember … or like to admit to remembering … All of us can remember some old time dog shows, perhaps as a junior handler with our parents, or the chats we’ve engaged in with our mature exhibitors about the good ol’ days. But no matter the story, there’s always intriguing history to remember, a thank you to our founders for their hard work, a good belly laugh at the way it was back then, and a wipe of sweat off the brow as we are thankful it’s all still going … well Maryborough KC is no different. The Maryborough Kennel Club came to fruition through the hard work and dedication of Mr George Edgar Rogers on Saturday 19 July 1915. First President was Mr N E Negus with Secretary being Mr G E Rogers. On formation, the Club was aligned with the Queensland Kennel Council until affiliation with the Canine Control Council (Queensland) was attained in June 1948, which was the time the CCCQ was formed. During those early years, shows in Maryborough were conducted under the Queensland Kennel Council and Queensland Kennel Association Rules and Regulations. The first Show was conducted in the Botanical Gardens on the 4 September 1915 with Mr A Roberts from Goodna officiating. The show resulted in a profit of 18 pounds and sixpence with a third being donated to the Belgium and Wounded Australians Fund as war had broken out and members were heading to war. The Clubs second show was held on 15 April 1916 with 180 entries (100 dogs) being judged by Mr R R Murray from Brisbane. A donation from the profits was made to the Women’s Hospital Guild.

DOG WORLD December 2023/January 2024

The formation of the CCCQ (after more than 20 years of absolute bitterness trying to gain control of dog showing in Queensland over the opposing associations) also brought about the difficulty of gaining recognition of previous controlling body’s Stud Registers, Dogs Registration, Challenge Certificates, Champion Certificates, Judges Qualifications, etc (Queensland Kennel Council, Queensland Kennel Association, Queensland Kennel Club, The Queensland Canine Board of Control). The Club actively acted on behalf of members to achieve results in gaining recognition in these areas much to the frustration of all, but there was success in the end. The Clubs first show under the auspice of the CCCQ was a 1 point Parade on the 7 August 1948, with Local Judge Mr W Burnett, and the first 2 point show was on the 18 September 1948 with Mr N W McLean from Brisbane, officiating. 1948 was a tumultuous time for the Club with much infighting between The Maryborough Kennel Club and the Canine Club of Maryborough – both affiliated with the CCCQ, and both wanted to gain control of the canine activities in Maryborough. The Maryborough Kennel Club was the Club that survived and other smaller organisations, such as the Maryborough Canine Fanciers Association and the Canine Club of Maryborough, all succumbing prior to 1949. The committee was all male and the meetings were openly conducted with members attending and afterwards the health and commitment of the President and Chairman would be toasted by all at the pub over the road. The progression of becoming affiliated would bring the betterment of breed recognition and higher standards of quality

54

DOG WORLD December 2023/January 2024

(which had been compared to the affiliation of the poultry clubs that then went on to bred better fowl) as up to then, dogs had been classified as: • Dogs with short tails were classed as Fox Terriers. • Dogs with long hair as a Collie. • Thin dogs with smooth coats and long tails were Greyhounds. During the first 60 years of the Clubs existence, it was very rare for entry fees to exceed the expenditure of conducting shows so the Club relied heavily on member donations to the trophy table and fund raising. Fund raising in the early days consisted of canvassing business houses, street stalls, euchre nights, dances and raffles. Raffle prizes were often items such as a lady’s bicycle, 4 ozs of tobacco, 2 roosters and often a beer for first! Shows were advertised on the local theatre screens or in the newspaper, and local shops were canvassed for prizes and trophies that they would then display in their shop windows before the show. The ladies of The Hospital Guild catered for the first show and continued the tradition for many years. Banquets were held in conjunction with shows and by all reports were well attended by club members and visiting exhibitors, whereupon the judge provided a critique of the dogs brought before him that day. Critiques were blunt and to the point with words such as: Pomeranian – (under seven months) dog and bitch of good sort. (over seven months) Dog out of coat. Bitch too fat. Bad coat and wavy. Pugs – (Black) Winner of Limit and Australian Bred

Classes good handled dog but plain in head. The winning dog and bitch in open classes stood out on their own. Fox Terriers – The winning dog “Canberra Chief” shown by EN Richardson is very good type of dog well finished off. Irish Terriers – only one worth mentioning. Showing age and very much too fat. Cocker Spaniels – only two worth mentioning. Good sort of dog but weak in hindquarters. Same owners bitch good sort but too low. Collies – not as good as when I was last in Maryborough. Very little competition. Greyhound – Good puppy bitch. Should improve with age. Shows were usually insured against rain, though it never rained between 12 noon and 2pm during the show so the Club was never able to collect the 25 pounds insurance monies. Club stewards were also empowered and trusted to collect canine exhibits from people not attending the show, and picked them up from the train from Brisbane and ensured they were brought before the judge. (Now that would be something to see these days!). The Club was often delegated to purchasing “dogs of better quality” on behalf of members as members and their dogs travelled as a club to neighbouring dog shows by train and bus where comradery was high and winning a privilege. The format of shows changed over the years. First shows were limited to a numbers of breeds nominated by the club. Generally, eight breeds per show. Mongrels were also permitted but information on how they were assessed is not conclusive. This then progressed to Limited,

Primary and Championship shows. The early group shows consisted of five groups before reallocation of breeds into the present seven. Shows were held in numerous locations throughout the years around the Maryborough area but after affiliation with CCCQ, most shows were held at the old showgrounds and Queens Park until the early 1960’s before relocating to the present grounds on the Bruce Highway in approximately 1977. This location provides a home for the Club with their own dedicated grounds, club house and stores – all that is needed to run shows these days. The Club is indebted to the work and dedication of Mr George Rogers who was the backbone of the Club from its foundation to the 1950’s. He was a club official, judge, delegate to QKC, show organiser, steward, conducted junior judge competitions and sheep herding displays, responsible for arranging with Queensland Railways to provide a special carriage to bring exhibitors and dogs to and from the shows, information sessions, and bred dogs under the ‘Carmarthen’ prefix. Even when he went to war, he still wrote back to the club to assist them in their ways whilst he was serving our country – all in the name of improving the quality of pure bred dogs. This dedication is rare these days, but I’m sure there are other clubs that also give thanks to their hard working founders too, for without them, we would not be here today. Special thanks to Peter McNamara for providing the research to be able to highlight some of the clubs early beginnings and the way the shows have changed over the years.
