understory

Fun fact: Capuchins crush millipedes and smear the mush on their fur to keep mosquitoes from biting.

f capuchins are awake, they’re probably searching for food. That’s why the understory is a favorite hangout. Here, bananas are plentiful, and cacao seedpods hide one of this monkey’s favorite treats—the sweet fruit inside. Capuchins are smart. They know they’re safer in the trees than on the ground. So when they need a drink of water, they come down very, very carefully. Even when they’re eating, they’re watching for jaguars, snakes, and large birds of prey.

I’d rather have mosquito bites.

Crushed millipede keeps mosquitoes away?
