Terriers

In this computer age of iPads, Smart Phones, Kindles and laptops there’s really no need for those of us within close proximity to the Philadelphia area to give our friends throughout the country an update on weather for the Montgomery weekend. They’ve got it right at their fingertips. It was a gorgeous weekend from the first of the Hatboros to the last day of Montgomery.

any found the weather a bit too warm for the first weekend of October as some judges tried to keep the exhibits in whatever shade could be found in the rings. The Norfolk Terrier Club’s host hotel was at the Holiday Inn located in Ft. Washington, PA. The club has stayed at this hotel for many years and we are constantly invited back; more than likely for our good manners. Guest rooms are always left clean and neat and our members pick up after their dogs. A board meeting was called for Wednesday late afternoon running into the evening and munching on a light dinner while we worked. My usual travel companions, Louise Leone and Kathy Kopack having arrived from Denver and Scottsdale on Tuesday, began the drive to Pennsylvania with me mid morning on Wednesday. The car was loaded as usual. This was the final board meeting I’d preside over, my term of office coming to an end; we managed to tie up loose ends. Becoming a club January 2009 and being accepted to the American Kennel Club as a member shortly thereafter I must state was a feather in the cap of the board. Usually at Hatboro our breed is scheduled for early judging but not this time, nevertheless knowing parking is a bit difficult we were up and ready to go at dawn. that we always stop at for a sensible breakfast. Arriving at the show located in Wrightstown, PA we found a good parking space, collected our chairs, set them up ringside inside the building where our breed has exhibited for years, and then we were off to find our way around the new set up site and to purchase catalogs. There is no show, in my opinion, that does a photo set up better than Hatboro. There’s something about this weekend running into friends from all over the country and some from foreign lands that makes the weekend very special. Absent was the typical fall clothing adorned by many who opted for lighter duds hoping to keep cool. Ms. Anne Katona, a noted terrier judge, had the pleasure of presiding over forty-one Norfolk early afternoon with only two absent. The Norfolk Terrier Club supports the entry of the first three shows with trophies for Best of Breed, Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex. The Reserve Winners Dog ribbon was awarded to “Argyle Sox It to Me” handled by Roxanne Sutton. The two Roberts, DiNunzio and DeSando, are the breeders with James Wall the owner. Glenelg Golightly, bred by Deborah Pritchard, is the dam but owned by the two Roberts and Ch. Chantilly’s Cawdor of Argyle is the sire of this lovely just year- old youngster. Lori Pelletier bred and owns “Avalon’s First Mate” as she led him to the Winners Dog slot from the Bred By Exhibitor class and a five point major. This young guy is sired by GCH Abbedales A Cut Above, bred by Joan Eckert, and out of the Pelletier bred bitch, Ch. Avalon’s First Kiss. A Cut Above it should be noted on his sire’s side comes from a long line of Max-Well Best in Show Norfolk. Watching “First Mate” take to the ring with ease I noticed his strong

hindquarters giving him the drive needed to be a winner. “Jufelt’s Delightful Damsel”, a three-year-old bitch, bred and owned by Judith Felton and shown by Lori Pelletier was the judge’s choice for the Reserve Winners Bitch ribbon. She’s sired by GCH Bigwig’s Most Happy Fella whose grand sire is the noted Ch. Duke of Copperplate a Best in Show winner at Montgomery a few years ago. “Damsel’s” dam is Ch. Julfelt’s Darling Dutchess. The sire “Cut Above” is the proud poppa of the Lori Pelletier bred, out of the bitch Ch. Avalon’s First Kiss“, “Avalon’s Bliss Creek Sophora” owned by long time Norfolk breeder, Priscilla Twombly for a five point major and the Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex ribbons. Priscilla happily hauled home the ribbons. Roxanne Sutton piloted the black and tan top winning Norfolk in the current standing, “GCH Yarrow Ticket to Ride” to the Best of Breed slot. “Rider” is a Best in Show winner, sired by Ch. Cause for Celebration out of the imported bitch, Kinsridge Hot Tip. “Celebration” is the son of the very famous and internationally known, “CoCo.” Will there ever be another “CoCo”? John and Pam Beale proudly bred and own “Rider” and Pam as we know was one of the owners of “CoCo.” Select Dog: GCH Avalon’s Spring Cove’s Simon Eyes and Awards of Merit went to: Ch. Rightly so Iron Maiden and GCH. Kilwinning The Graduate.

hursday, very late afternoon, the club held its Annual Meeting at the host hotel. The new board was formally elected with Nancy Wise serving as President. We all wish her well and know that she’ll do a great job leading us into the next three years. Awards were given out for both conformation and performance. The Bluebonnet club displayed their glorious handmade quilt available as a raffle. Toni Harrold set up the notions table and with the help of Kay Graham did a bang up job in sales. Following the meeting was a Panel Discussion led by a distinguished threesome in the canine world: Peter Green, Geir Flyckt Petersen and Lydia Coleman Hutchinson. The room well attended with both Norfolk and some Norwich breeders/exhibitors all
